DONE, what causes my plantar and we need your opinion on some house stuff.

Andrew just taking a cat nap in the grass before getting back to painting again.

Brooke and I were in charge of clean-up and Andrew finished up all of the painting.  Hallelujah.  I could be okay if we never had to paint again;)

Let’s rewind to the start of Monday.  I felt surprisingly way better than I was expecting and running actually took away the last of the sore in my legs—> 9 miles @ 8:10 average pace.  I may have slacked off on speed work this time around but I have been more diligent than ever on my stretching and foam rolling this time around.  The older I get, the less I am able to get away with running and not stretching/rolling out afterwards.  In my early 20s I don’t think I ever did either of those things…

Beretta loves it when I foam roll.

IMG 3293

Brooke and I had quite the random day together.

We went and I got my eyelashes glued on… I go about once a month to do this and I’m hooked.  It started a few years ago as a thing I was just going to do for a few months and it slowly turned into a few years.  Brooke just runs around the little room with snacks and games while tickling my feet.

IMG 3357

We then did a bunch of errands and ate lunch and this picture was taken about 20 seconds after she was telling me that she WAS NOT TIRED.

IMG 3365

After she woke up we grabbed these.   Perfect for these 90 degree afternoons.

IMG 3371

Just me and my best gal pal on the curb.

IMG 3380

And then as we were driving home we saw this bounce house place and it turns out that it is just fine doing it in your clothes.

IMG 3391

I literally can’t believe how big she is getting (SHE TURNS 4 IN 13 DAYS!!!)… it seems like it was just yesterday that I was posting 400 selfies a day of her and I when she was a newborn.

IMG 3383

Most of our kitchen stuff is in boxes so continuing the take-out here we go.  Cafe Rio makes us happy.

IMG 3403

Brooke’s first ever backyard.

IMG 3427

And dessert consisted of loads of watermelon.  I don’t even want to think about watermelon season ending soon…

IMG 3428

This is really random but I think I figured out something about my feet/ankles.  Every now and then my plantar fasciitis and a little tendonitis in my ankles flares up.  It’s taken me a little while to figure out what causes these things to flare up… but it might sound silly.  Whenever I sleep on my stomach a few nights in a row—> BOOM.  My feet and ankles flare up with the combination of running a lot of miles (for me).  Whenever I sleep on my back or side a few nights in a row along with a lot of miles (for me)—>  very happy feet and ankles.  Maybe it is all in my head BUT it kind of makes sense though.  When I sleep on my stomach then my feet are in a non-natural (toes pointed and that ligament tightens up?)  way for 8 hours straight and then I go straight to running on them.  I have not talked to a Dr. about this but I’m prepared to write a scientific thesis on this any day now;)  I have no idea if this is really what causes it but the correlation is kind of strange.

It’s a shame though because sleeping on my stomach is by far my favorite way to sleep

IMG 3284

Andrew and I went from…  let’s just paint the house to let’s paint and redo the floors to let’s paint, do the floors, the bathrooms and get new countertops.  I think we have a problem and it’s going to sure take some time but it has been really fun to do this all together.  Currently we are figuring out what tile we want to put down in our bathrooms… we have narrowed it down to 6 but we want your opinion… what’s your favorite?

What do you think?  Have an opinion on what bathroom tile we should use?

Are you into home renovations?  I’m pretty sure I get caught scrolling on Instagram every home decorating account I can find for as long as possible.

Is there anything that you do OUTSIDE of running that causes you pain when you are running?

-Randomly all of the painting for hours straight with the big ol’ roller was bothering my hip.

Have any injuries or flare ups that pop up for you?

#4… be careful with all the grout options… so hard to keep clean!

Number 4. It’s the most timeless.

Makes total sense about the plantar fascia. (I’m a physical therapist). In stomach lying or back lying your foot is in the position it goes into naturally at rest…into plantar flexion…..so you are sooo right in thinking that it can aggravate the fascia…because it is NOT being stretched! This is the idea behind the Strassburg sock…it’s a recovery aid that keeps your foot in dorsiflexion (as you sleep) and stretches the calf muscles and the plantar fascia!!!

And please do not remind me that watermelon season is ending…..so sad.

I love 4. And do you have any before and after pics of your eyelashes? I need some!

#4! Without hesitation. It will be great. Timeless and kind of a faded beach glass feel.

I like #1 and #4
I 100% completely agree with your sleeping on your stomach theory affecting your ankles. I was talking to my chiropractor about this. I have stiff ankles/Achilles tendon if I sleep with my feet pointed. I know you are not supposed to sleep on your stomach but it is SO COMFY . So I adjust how I sleep and slide down to the bottom of my bed so my feet hang off and are in the neutral position. BOOM fixes it!

#4 is my fav : )

#2 or #3 for me for sure!

#5, #4, and #6…in that order!

LOVE #4!! Also, painting… i don’t mind the walls and trim so much.. but painting ceilings? That is my least favorite, easily! NECK PAIN FOR DAYS!

Reply

#4 but BEWARE of the grout option colors, keeping the grout clean is a TOUGH ONE!!!

I like #4, but it’s hard to recommend it without knowing what your other choices for the room are.

I love #6!

I love number 4!!!!

Interesting thoughts about plantars! Will have to pay attention to my achilles tendonitis and sleep position. I have flare-ups in cold weather and I swear it’s b/c my feet are always FREEZING!

I, like almost everyone else, immediately thought #4.
Plantar – UGH. I have been suffering with it for 2 months now. No running because its too painful to even walk most of the time. This is my very first injury. But guess what. I always sleep on my stomach! It totally makes sense! The stretches they tell you to do – the opposite of how they are positioned when on your stomach. Also I was told to use this brace contraption (you can get it anywhere) that keeps you foot flexed so no pain in the a.m. I have learned to sleep on my stomach but kinda jack my up to the side and its almost as comfortable. Thanks for putting 2 and 2 together for me. Oh and I guess I’ll get that foam roller out of the closet……

Love #4!!! <3

Okay – here is my preference for bathroom tile – #6, #2, then #3. However, I would definitely recommend using gray grout and not white (which will be harder to clean)! I love house projects. Currently, I want to re-do our floors, add some floating wood shelves/pipe shelves, and add an outdoor pergola. Very long term, I want to re-do our kitchen cabinets and back-splash and the bathrooms. EEK! However, it is so expensive so we have done a little at a time. The first year we painted everything. Then the second year we re-did our kitchen counter tops with granite! SO NICE! Now this year we are traveling! Ugh! Money only goes so far! HA!

I cannot wait to see all of the pictures of everything done at ya’ll house! It looks really good so far. I love the backyard too!

Your sleeping position can totally affect your foot! I promise! If you want to keep sleeping on your stomach try with your feet of the end of the bed. Or if that’s too weird a pillow under your shins and feet hanging off.

I love tile 6. It looks so clean and fresh. Also looks like bigger tiles with less grout so that would make it easier to clean.

My favorites are 2 & 6!!
2- my personal favorite!! Very vintage/European/chic – it will never be “dated” which is a smart way to update homes. I have something similar to this in one of my bathrooms and it’s one of my favorite features about my home.
6- similar concept to 2 yet with a more modern feel

I think it depends if you are looking for a classy/traditional feel or a more fresh/modern concept. You can always mix traditional & modern so it’s nothing to stress too much over! Trust your gut!

Updating ur home is so rewarding and special when it becomes ” your own” and reflects ur personal tastes. Enjoy the process!!!!!

#2 — I love #1 but it will show every little piece of dirt, dust, etc.

Reply

#4 is my favorite but #6 could work, too. It would depend on which one looks better with the rest of your bathroom (paint, cabinet, and fixtures). I also echo the many people who said “no white grout on the floor!”

Reply

I vote 6! We just bought our house in February and we are in the same place as you guys! After painting our house we now want to redo everything!! I dont think we will ever finish!!

Reply

4 or 6!! But leaning more towards 6 ?

Definitely either 4 or 6! ?

Reply

#4!!! I have white tile in my bathroom and it is awful! It shows all the dirt and messiness of a bathroom! I sweep it daily. Go with #4!

Reply

#4, and use a greyish grout if you can. Grout is seriously annoying to clean!

Reply

Number 6! or 4

When we bought our house 4 years ago we completely gutted it and moved the kitchen to the other side of the house and put in 2 new bathrooms. It’s so great having a house all exactly the way we want it! Also the extra thick underlay we put under the carpet makes it so squishy and delicious to walk on :D

Reply

I like #4 and #6 but I’m leery of small tile because that equals A LOT of grout to clean. With 3 kids and one on the way, grout is the bane of my existence. Also – like others said, go with a dark grout color. We went with a mid tone and seeing the dirty grout kills me!!! I’d say larger floor tiles and darker grout but that’s just from someone not a fan of scrubbing floors!

Reply

Please choose #4.

Just built our house. We put 4 on the bottom of our shower. Beautiful.

Reply

Dark grout !! You will be able to keep it clean!!

Reply

#6 with minimal grout lines. It is beautiful and would be the easiest to keep clean.

Reply

I also have the same foot/ankle problems with sleeping on my stomach. Sometimes I angle myself so my feet hang in dorsiflexion off the bed. And other times, I’m a good girl and wear my night splints. :)

Reply

4 or 6! It looks so elegant and clean!

Number 4!!! It’s my favorite!!! It’s similar to what I chose for our latest and greatest DIY home project — at my mom’s house! It’s working great because even though my mom’s house is meticulously clean, it doesn’t show dirt!!

As far as home renovations, it feels like as soon as you start with one thing (painting the walls) everything else seems to feel unmatched or “old” — and just like that BOOM… whole house renovations….

When I do an intense crossfit workout, I notice that I had some lower back pain that only bothered me while running. It was strange. Talked to my chiropractor and now incorporate some new stretches and feel much better.

Delurking to leave my first comment ever. We have #4 with a medium gray grout in our bathroom and it is perfect and low maintenance.

YAY for first comment ever! Thanks Jama:) GOOD TO KNOW about the medium gray grout… we might have to copy you!

I feel like you guys have done everything we have done, when it comes to home renovations, and everything we are in the process of doing….which has taken us 7 years…and you guys are doing it in like 2 weeks. It’s bananas. Basically, I am saying you guys are amazing. We take forever. We were just picking out tile a couple of weeks ago and now you have me reconsidering my choice. I really like #4 and #6.

I totally think your foot/stomach sleeping theory sounds legit. Basically, you don’t ever need to see a dr again in your life after a conclusion like that. I used to be a stomach sleeper, but now laying on my stomach hurts my lower back. My theory it is because I am old and my body is falling apart.

5, but I think I’ve already been outvoted.

I am moving into a new condo at the end of the month and already have a list of reno projects.

I always sleep on my stomach, but turn my feet inwards, maybe you can try that?
As for the tiles, we’ve just recently redone our whole bathroom (walls and all) and we went tile shopping pretty much 3x a week for about 2 months ;)
What tiles you should get really depends the room itself – if it’s small, then don’t choose small wall and floor tiles; if it’s a big room, you can easily use small tiles. If the room is dark, use lighter tiles, etc. Our bathroom is quite small, so we added a huge glass shower screen, white vanity, white medium sized wall tiles with a shiny glossy finish and used big green/grey matte floor tiles to visually maximise the space.
Also important is that you get tiles that are easy to clean and don’t show dirt/hair easily. We have a dog and we didn’t want tiles that we had to vacuum every day (our dog is weird and likes to join us in the bathroom when we shower lol).
I personally like tiles 2 and 4, but then it depends on the wall tiles and room structure! Not sure if that helped or just confused you more ;)

Get title that is easy to clean. No grooves.

1 & 4 seem classy!

The foot thing…that makes so much sense! Might be what is up with me too…

Love #4!

PF is a chronic overuse syndrome that’s caused by the repetitive stretching of the plantar fascia via excessive pronation during gait. Tight foot and calf musculature, obesity and a high foot arch are also contributing factors. When sleeping on your stomach, you place your calf muscle in a shortened/contracted position for an extended period of time. You were right on. It’s not in your head! :)

Try the Strasbourgh sock…you will be amazed at how it works. Not sexy, but honestly, life saver!

Reply

#4 and #6! I would skip bright white tile on the floor-it will be a nightmare to keep “looking”clean. It will show every dark hair from you, beretta and just in general that drops on the floor!

Reply

I love number 4 too :)

Reply

#4 looks great and will look clean longer :)

definitely like six the best, although it depends on the color scheme for the rest of the bathroom too. but it’s so pretty! hope the feet/ankle pain subsides (interesting to correlate that with sleeping positions!).

4, 5, or 6 – all gorgeous!

Soo… I sleep on my stomach and have ankle tendinitis issues too. But I figured it out. I roll up a towel or anything soft and rest my ankles on it when I sleep. Problem solved! No more tendinitis!

Reply

#6 – Agreed with others on the darker grout.

I also have plantar faascitisitis (seriously I hate saying it and figuring out how to spell it) and you are absolutely correct that a pointed toe will cause it to be worse. One of the “cures” actually is a boot that you were at night to keep your foot/ankle at a right angle.

I like 4 & 5 the best!

Reply

You don’t have to stop sleeping on your stomach… Just scoot down a bit so your feet can have off the end in the proper position. Works for me and I no long have foot issues. You can’t go wrong with any of those tiles!

Reply

I’m going to say lino. Tile in bathrooms with little boys is awful to clean. If you are set on tile, pick the biggest ones with grey or another darkish grout. Definitely not white – it will never be clean, or at least not without tons of work. Grout is such a pain to clean. Of course, I’m totally biased because I pretty much hate tile, if you couldn’t tell ;)

Reply

My vote is for number 3! My second pick would be #4. haha, but I think it would help to see the wall color ;)

I loveee house renovations! I don’t ever do them or even have a house. But I like the TV shows, looking at pictures on pinterest, and judging other people when they are doing it! It seems like a lot of fun but also I don’t have good fashion sense and am not artistic so I don’t think I would ever be able to do a good job on my own.

Reply

I used to get TERRIBLE plantar fasciitis when I was playing basketball in college. You are absolutely correct–pointed toes = ligaments/tendons/fascia contract at night = terrible pain when it’s time to stretch them in the morning! If you want to sleep on your stomach, there’s a ton of inexpensive “braces” out there that will slip on and keep your feet at a 90° angle while you sleep!

#2 – with medium to dark grout —

Hi Janae! I love your blog and read it every day :). Just wondering – what do you do to keep your eyelash extensions in tact until you get them re-done? I just got extensions and I LOVE them but I find that with running and working out a lot they fall out quicker than they should. Thank you for any tips!!!

Reply

YES! to sleeping with your feet pointed and pain in the morning, BUT I’ve found if I scoot down in the bed, and hang my feet off the edge of the bed so they are in a neutral position, I can still enjoy sleeping on my stomach from time to time.
Good luck with those aches and pains and the marathon training!
