21 days without sugar? Do you think I can do it? Let’s make some bets.

Who doesn’t like hiking around the desert first thing in the morning?

IMG 5616

Watch out… I just downloaded a self-timer app for my iPhone.  This blog is about to explode with self-timer pics.

I grew up in St. George, Utah and so I was really excited to show Brooke a few little trails and explore the red rocks before driving home.  I think this is my favorite part of being a mom, showing Brooke new things and different places is kind of the best.

IMG 5613

To fuel above walking around and taking pictures of ourselves we started with brown rice, zucchini, egg and feta.   Nothing like a little stir-fry type thing for breakfast.

IMG 5604

We drove home (took us about 4 hours), took naps and then went to my aunt’s house for dinner and Brooke had some quality dog time.

IMG 5627

This salad.  Such a good summer salad.  Blueberries, feta cheese, nectarines, red onion, red peppers and we used the TJ’s Goddess Dressing.  We also had bbq chicken sandwiches and the sweetest watermelon.

IMG 5619

I like a girl that chooses brownies and ice cream for her birthday cake.

IMG 5631

Brooke and I are super classy when we don’t have a high chair handy and all of the dining chairs are nice and I don’t want her (or me) to spill on them.

IMG 5635

So I am trying something crazy.  I am going to go 21 days without desserts/candy in attempt to eat real food/quality calories again.  Whenever I travel I eat more sugar than a normal human should in a year and so I want to get myself back in the habit of snacking on healthier foods.  I also need to start being a better example for Brooke… 21 days… here we go!!!!!   Wish me luck or place bets on whether or not I can do it;)  I don’t know why sugar is so hard for me to not eat 10 times a day but I think I should be able to get it under control by now.

And a few people asked for my road trip playlist… I am warning you, I like random music.

Anyone want to go 21 days with me?

I don’t eat sugar anyway so I’m right there with you! Cutting sugar (and sugar substitutes) really did change my life! I feel so much better and never crave sweets at all. I eat really nourishing stuff and a lot more good quality fat now too. You can totally do it and you’ll wind up feeling great!

That salad looks divine.

I grew up in Australia and the UK – born in Melbourne, moved to Sydney, moved to the UK, back to Sydney and back to the UK!!

At the moment I’m loving Coldplay’s album when I’m driving. And also Alabama Shakes – such an awesome Summer album! I love your Deathcab choice.

Erm… I would definitely give up 21 days of sugar. But we have an open jar of Nutella in our cupboard, and it calls to me everyday to eat it with a spoon…. maybe once that’s finished I’ll join you ;)

Reply

YES!!! I’ve been totally overdoing sugar and sweets! I’m in! 21 days! (Starting tomorrow for me, since I just bought a donut & flavored coffee…doh!)

I am just wrapping up going the entire month of July with no desserts, candies, or sweetened drinks. Once Friday comes around I will have done 31 days! It isn’t easy but I can say I feel so much better than I did at the beginning of the month because I was really overdoing it. For August I am not going to do any fast food for lunch during the work week. Hopefully when September comes I will feel like a whole new person. :)

Way to go Jessica! You are amazing!

It’s funny you posted about a 21 day detox. I was just talking to someone about how much my sugar has increased in the last month. I’ll do it with you. Though I think that whipped cream will be the hardest part ha ha.

I didn’t know there was a self timing app. I would be interested to see what other apps you have on your pocket internet.

Thank you for the playlist! :)

Seeing your zucchini just reminded me that I ordered a zucchini spiralizer last week and it should be here any day now! I can’t wait to try zucchini spaghetti and other curly things!

Reply

I am *really* interested to see how your giving up sugar goes. I think I eat just about as much sugar as you do and I’m afraid I might die if I try to give it up, especially since I try to avoid non-natural sweeteners. I grew up in Iowa–it was lovely and peaceful and I’m so glad I grew up there. Seeing you show Brooke new things makes me excited to become a mom someday and do the same with my kids!

Eh, can I start tomorrow? Today’s our anniversary and I like the desserts at the place we are going for dinner ;-)

Reply

YES YES YES!! Happy anniversary Gracie and enjoy your evening out tonight!

I would love to try and reduce my sugar intake too so I think I’ll try this one with you! Keep us updated on how it’s going :)

In high school someone bet my best friend and I that we couldn’t eat healthy for a week and when we did she bought us a 15lb Costco chocolate cake as a reward!

Good luck with no sugar – you can do it!

I grew up in a few places, we moved a lot between Louisiana, Texas, and Tennessee. I am a country music girl all the way! The new stuff is hit or miss, I like most of it but I hate the country/rapping crap and the autotune stuff. Give me 80’s and 90’s country, plus some Keith Urban and I am set!

I should eat more veggies with breakfast………..usually I get cereal or pb waffles in the morning…………my job is physical and I need some carbs! I do love this new breakfast sandwich from Panera though………..avocado, tomato, egg white, spinach, and Vermont Cheddar cheese……………yum!

I could not go 21 days without sugar…………..I am lucky to make it 1 day without dessert! Good luck!

Reply

Grew up on Cape Cod and now I live north of Boston.

The only time I add veggies to my breakfast is when I make an omelete… I’m all about the fruits at breakfast!

Oh, I wish I could do 21 days of no sugar but I’m pregnant and have no will power right now ;) But good luck to you!!!

Reply

I love my dessert, but I find that trying to cut it out completely totally messes with my head. Instead, when I feel like I’ve been having too much, I get super dark chocolate and keep that on hand as my after dinner dessert. It’s still chocolate-y, but I eat less of it because it’s not as sweet. But if 21 days without works for you, more power to ya! Good luck!

Reply

Ok, let’s do this! I am feeling the same way after eating my weight in Turkey Hill ice cream last night. That salad looks amazing. :-)

I went paleo for about 2 years. Even then, giving up sugar was a task that was very hard for me. I am no longer an addict now that I cut my intake down to some weekends and a little something once throughout the day (most likely in the morning, to get my fix out of the way).
I find that if I eat EVERYTHING in moderation, I don’t overeat anything. It may also be easier for me to eat less sugar due to the fact that I have both a gluten intolerance AND a dairy intolerance. Cutting things (other than gluten and dairy) totally out of my diet backfires on me every time. . . and I binge eat what I wasn’t supposed to.
Some, though, find it easier to cut things cold-turkey, rather than easing off. I am not them. . . by any means.
Blessings to you both!

My kids dad and I went a year without sugar. I can’t remember why we stopped, I think we moved to another state and the stress killed it. We took our kids to Disneyland right after our divorce and last year I had to dig pictures (from the olden days camera) out to prove to my youngest that he had been there. He was 3. Kids! I tried to whole30 program last year and it did not work so much for me but it does help you have better snack habits.

Good luck.

I grew up and New York and will probably never leave even though I sometimes consider heading down south to Florida…As long as I could still have sugar in fruit, I could probably handle 21 days without a chocolate fudge something. But I would need peanut butter with the fruit to still feel complete.

Reply

Glad youre taking on the challenge. I’m on a keto paleo diet, so naturally i ey things without sugar at all, or even starch for that matter! It’s great because you no longer get blood sugar spikes and drops.

Reply

What does constitutes “sugar”? Table sugar, sweeteners, honey, maple sugar etc.? How about naturally occurring sugar, like in fruit juices (natural juices) and fruit? I don’t consume added sugar, but fruit is my vice. Berries to be exact. At the moment it’s berries season here and I just can’t stop shoveling raspberries and blueberries and other kinds of berries into my mouth. So 21 days free of berries would be beneficial for me. And extremely hard :D

Reply

For me I am just focusing on not having candy and dessert… I will still have fruit, jam, yogurt etc. KEEP EATING BERRIES… those are the best!

Reply

I’ll do 21 days with you. I was doing so well then went on vacation a couple weeks ago and it’s been downhill since then. I grew up in provo, Orem, San Diego, Virginia, Denver…. My dad was a marine.
And one of my breakfast favorites is a wheat English muffin with two eggs (one on each side…open face sandwich style) with avocado.

Reply

I grew up in Dallas and now I’m just an hour away so I’m still pretty close to home. Can’t imagine ever living anywhere else!

I LOVE that Tennis Courts song, she’s just the greatest!

I’ve never gone more than a week, but that was cutting out all sugars at all, not just sweets, and it was HARD. But you will do great since you’ve got Brooke for your motivation!

Reply

I will do the 21 days with you too! Sugar is my nemesis I love it too much.

Reply

WAHOOOO LISA!!! We can do this:)

Reply

I’m in too!!
Right now i’m pretty good about moderation but when stress comes around… baBAMB. also i notice if i have one kind of sweet i always want another. but i have a delicious watermelon in my fridge waiting for me at home! so i’m going to try and use that as motivation to not eat sweets.

I think my biggest challenge will be feeling satisfied without something sugary/ chocolatey. Sometimes eating fruit after dinner does it for me but mostly not :( i may try unsweetened yogurt with cocoa and a bit of jam or something. Janae please keep us posted on how it goes and any good recipes you have!

I am on my second round of the 21 Day Fix, eliminating sugar and focusing on on eating clean and healthy foods! I feel great and my e Younergy levels have increased!

Reply

That should say “energy” levels :-)

Reply

That is what I am hoping for… my energy levels have been really low lately so I am hoping that this helps!

Reply

Hi – a tip for a female runners. If you are feeling fatigued and energy levels are low (and not cleared up by sleep or a diet change) go get your iron levels checked. Low ferritin/low iron serum/low hemoglobin can all contribute to fatigue. This is somewhat common in runners – especially women. It’s also an easy fix. FYI.

I am afraid to cut sugar out completely thinking that I may actually die….but I have been trying to cut back…small steps right? :)
I almost never do veggies for breakfast…but fruit yes!

Reply

I have cut back a lot on sugar lately and now I don’t crave it and I find that alot of sugary foods are too sweet for me. Im sure it will be tough at first but you can do it! There are so many delicious fruits that have natural sugar that you won’t even miss the junk by the end:)

Reply

I know I could do 21 days, but it would be hard!

If you don’t write about sugar, and froyo, and diet coke what the heck are you going to write about? Advocare 21 day cleanse? I am really rooting for you but lately just something ins’t jiving. Not really meaning to be an insult, just feelings coming from someone who has read you for years.

Reply

Hey Hopeful! I am sorry that things aren’t jiving for you lately on my blog. My life has definitely changed a lot in the last few years and so I am sure my blog has too. Just kind of how life goes:) I won’t be doing any type of cleanse but instead switching out candy for some healthier options. I’ll still be writing about running, Brooke, food (I hope to include some healthy snack/meal ideas!) and our random daily adventures! Have a great day!

Not meaning as an insult, but your comment comes off as rude & Im pretty sure that was your intention. If you don’t like the content of the blog nobody is forcing you to read it. Have a nice day!

Hi Macy, I’ve started reading HRG as inspiration. Working, family and maintaining fitness. it helped gear me in the direction. As someone who has been reading HRG for yearssss I thought it would be OK to comment and express how I felt. Unlike you, I don’t want her to lose a reader! Have a great day too!

I have always wanted to do a Sugar Detox but just cant make myself do it. What program are you following??

Reply

HEY!! I am not following any specific type of program but I am just going to stay away from desserts and candy! I want to fill those calories that I get from sugar with healthier options!

I grew up in Virginia! And the only time I have veggies for breakfast is when I have green smoothies- so that would be spinach and/or kale!

Cutting out sugar would be incredibly hard for me..probably a sign I should do it!

I grew up in a city near Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Still live only 15 minutes from my parents house.
When I’m by myself I listen to the radio and I’m a station rotator. I’ll push the next button until I find a song I like. When I’m with my boys, I listen to either the Frozen soundtrack or another kids CD that I have in the car. They get really repetitive though.

I grew up in the Bay Area…Oakland & Sunnyvale but moved here to Utah my last year of high school. Both places feel like home to me!
I bet you can do 21 days! I eat refined sugar so rarely I can’t even remember the last time. Good luck!!

I am in for 21 days. I’ve recently given up artificial sweeteners, and should really cutback on junk that has no nutritional value. No sugar for me except fruit:-)

There’s actually a real program called the 21 Day Sugar Detox! I’ve been feeling like I need to do one, but I’m postponing until peach season is over

Reply

I love dessert so much that it’s really hard for me to cut back. Maybe I’ll start with just doing dessert on the weekends…or just jump in and do 21 days without it like you. I’ll probably try the first one once I start school, since I shouldn’t be eating so much sugar to begin with!

Reply

Funny you mention sugar…as my daughter and I were eating Nutella on nilla wafers last night, I decided to cut back. I eat some sweets, but rarely eat a lot, but I am going to try and limit it to my coffee (which I drink 2-3 times a week) and a small dessert (a couple dark Hershey kisses or mini Dove ice cream bites).

I grew up in Maine, and have lived in Puerto Rico, Indiana (college), Texas, and now Virginia.

Sugar consumption has been one of the hardest things for me to get control of! I don’t know why but I feel like I’m addicted (which I am) and when I try to reduce it I get crazy cravings for it. This is only my opinion but the Garcinia Cambogia supplement has helped me with my cravings more than I can say! I now will have one little square of 86% cocoa dark chocolate a few times a week.

You can do it!

Are you doing the 21-Day Sugar Detox (an actual book/diet plan/list of yes and no foods)? I tried it and lasted 6 days! I love sweets, but I was craving fruit something fierce, so I threw in the towel. You’re only allowed one green-stemmed banana or one grapefruit a day, not because fruit is bad, but to really change your palate. I’m very interested in reading about your plan!

Reply

You are a stronger woman than me! This is something that I really need to do soon but have such a hard time getting started. I am a weekend sugar eater. I eat so well and quality foods during the week and then once the weekend comes everything changes. Right now I am just trying to balance better!

I grew up in Kansas City, MO! And I don’t usually eat veggies for breakfast unless I’m at a restaurant and get some kind of omelet. I usually have oatmeal every single morning! Creature of habit :)

That salad looks sooooo good, I’m the worst at making salads at home so I should maybe take a leaf out of your book and try one like this! I keep looking for good ideas of salads to make.

21 days…. what a thought! I’d love to do it but I think I’d fail at it – my treats every so often are what stop me going crazy on the chocolate 10 times a day. In my defence I don’t eat that many treats!

The only time I really have veggies for breakfast is with/in eggs – in scrambles or omelettes – or in smoothies. Maybe I should start adding in more veggies….

Also your playlist is awesome! So much there that I like!

I love that playlist!! Good luck with your 21 dsys–I did that between Thanksgiving and Christmas but then I went on a huge binge afterward so it wasn’T really worth it!

Have you looked into the 21-Day Sugar Detox by Diane Sanfilippo? She wrote a cook book with tons of recipes for all 21 days! (She’s the blogger behind http://www.balancesbites.com and author of Practical Paleo) but this book looks good too! “The 21-Day Sugar Detox: Bust Sugar & Carb Cravings Naturally” in case youre interested :)

Reply

I tried the detox plan earlier this year. The book focuses on eliminating not just added sugars but also high glycemic foods. Like, red apples and potatoes, squash, many grains. It was tough for me but I did learn to embrace some new vegetables.
I think the first step should be cutting down the refined sugars – soda and candy and cakes. But not go so hard as to cut out many fruits. I think HRG has a good plan that she can stick to for 3 weeks. Janae, I believe in you!

Reply

If you’re going to give up sugar for 21 days, ending with brownies and chocolate ice cream was a solid choice, so good! Joining you in this challenge would probably be a good idea for me, especially with just 3 more weeks left in my pregnancy, when I want to be eating well for me and baby. But, I kinda want to use it as an excuse to indulge in at least one treat before it’s all said and done :)

Reply

I grew up in Savannah, GA which is why I love being on the coast/around water so much! I attempted a 7 day sugar detox and didn’t do so well, so good luck on your 21 days!! I stayed away from candy easily but it’s stuff like my coffee creamer and cereals that get me. I listen to all sorts of random songs when I’m driving around too. I can never pick one style of music! Love that self timer app!!

Reply

I spent my life on Long Island until I moved to NorCal 18 years ago-I still miss it every day-and if I could move the life I built here -there I would do it in a nano second.

I give up candy every lent-I’m like you I can eat a whole bag of any sugar thing you name. The beginning is hard because you have a sugar withdrawal. It’s a real addiction. Once you get past the first week you won’t even want it. I then go back pretty much in moderation until candy season-which is Halloween through Easter and then it starts all over again.

You’ll be fine so stick with it.

A Lack of Color is one of my favorites ever. It was on one of the original OC soundtracks (!!! I know!!!) so it’s been with me for a long time and always makes me emotional.
I almost jumped RIGHT in and said I’d do it with you, but my birthday is within the 21 days and I am NOT passing up a sugar-coma day! :) But I’ll do it after that! Or around that!

Reply

Ohhhh!! Keep us posted! I recently started this (also 21 days…) with a friend. I can’t seem to stick with it unless I’m accountable to someone. She’s doing her physio exercises for three weeks, I’m avoiding refined sugar (I’m still eating plenty of fruit, and eating plain Greek yogurt which contains sugar because, hey, milk has sugar) and if either of us misses a day, we both have to start over. I was getting a little too comfortable with making strawberry shortcake every day (and eating it for breakfast), so this was necessary! Good luck :)

Reply

This is a brilliant plan! I know I’d be more accountable to someone else if we both had to start over because I caved. I’m totally doing this!

Reply

I’m in on the 21 days with no sugar. I’ve been getting a little lax lately with how much sugar and just overall junk I’ve been consuming. Time for a reset!

Reply

not to sound negative but HOW are you giving up sugar for 21 days??? OMG… I cant even bare to think of 3 days! Good Luck!

Reply

You can TOTALLY do 21 days without sugar if you set your mind to it. And I have found that the less sugar I eat, the less sugar I crave. You have to just get over that “bump” at the beginning when all you want is sugar. I am starting a 60 day PiYo workout program and it is all clean-eating so I am I going to try and eliminate as much sugar from my diet as possible. The only issue with the eating plan is it only has 2 servings of fruit and I eat about 10.

I grew up overseas in Greece, Japan, Italy, and England so probably won’t be showing my son all those places. However, I do love taking him hiking and exploring. And I have taken him on all my work trips so far and we just returned from a week in LA for a conference. So, he’s getting to see a lot of new places with me.

Ever since I had my son I started listening to Christian music in the car to avoid Evan repeating inappropriate lines from songs. I definitely don’t believe in sheltering kids from reality (I work in HIV and think the more info the better), but I feel like at his age (almost 2) he repeats everything and I’d prefer to keep the music age-appropriate for as long as I can. And I can only take “The Wheels on the Bus” for so long – so I switched to Christian music to get more variety at times.

Reply

I listen to Christian music too. I like the Message on XM

Reply

I don’t have XM (is that Sirus?) radio but I listen to WGTS, a local DC channel. I like that I can get the app on my iPad and listen to it without a radio. I’d never listened to Christian music before and was pleasantly surprised to find that I like a lot of the songs!

Good luck with going 21 days without sugar!! Doesn’t this mean no natural sugars, like fruits? Because if so, then I can’t do this haha I barely get any sugar now, and if I go completely without it, I know it will screw up my body and workouts.

Reply

I will definitely be eating fruit!

Reply

You can totally do it, you just need to stick to it and remind yourself of the promise you made to yourself when you automatic sugar-wanting reflexes kick in. Maybe think of a little goal reward you could get (not sugar) at the end of the three weeks, like a new pair of running pants or a too-cute but overpriced outfit for Brooke? You could buy matching outfits for the two of you. Bonus for being adorable now, AND embarrassing her to no end when she’s older.

Reply

21 days…I’m not sure if I could do that! I do know what you mean about snaking on foods that are good for you. I have been snacking on cereal and crackers too much lately!

I think the longest I’ve lasted without sugar was 5 days. I so badly want to cut it out right now. The only thing holding me back is $100 worth of Lake Champlain chocolates that we forgot to put out during our wedding. Who else is going to eat them all?! You can totally do this! Making it this public will help and it sounds like a lot of others are on board with you :)

I’m curious to see how you feel after completing the no sugar challenge. It’s a trendy thing right now but I think it’s a good experiment at the very least. Not that I’ve signed up yet! My morning chai tea that I have daily has a lot of sugar in it, and that would be the most difficult to give up.

If you can do 21 days without sweets, anyone can! :) I need to cut back on sugar and definitely eat more vegetables! Its so hard to make healthy food choices all the time, I try to find a good balance…

You go, girl! I’d join in on the challenge with you, but we have two special occasions coming up (my bday next week and my brother’s welcome-home-from-Afghanistan party the week after), so I think I’ll have to make a couple exceptions. Please keep us posted on how it goes!!

US used to be my song too! I listened to it so much my little boy knew all the words. I love Hero too “I’m the hero of this story I don’t need to be saved” was my motto during my divorce.

I ate a few Krispy Kreme donuts yesterday. I really need a sugar cleanse. Good luck!

I grew up in Sacramento, CA- where I still am! :) GOOD LUCK on the no sugar/desserts thing! I could never ever do that- I’d go crazy! It’ll be fun following along! And girl. I just discovered the self timer app not too long ago, and ohhhh boy, watch out. It is a game changer! ;)

i know you can do this! =) good luck, janae!

Way to go girl! I don’t know if I can go 21 days without sugar, but I am willing to give it a try! I know you can do it! I was born in Pullman, Washington, but my family moved about a billion times before we moved to Utah when I was 13. So I guess I didn’t really grow up in any one place ha.

Omg I love that you included a healthy amount of Florence on your playlist! I need to force myself to take breaks from F&TM overloads sometimes! Got me through a lot of tough last legs of marathons, though!

I’ll go no sugar with you for 21 days, Janae! Good for you for doing it for all the right reasons. I had the best, sweetest blackberries yesterday and it made my entire day. I wanted to go back to the farmers market again and couldn’t stop obsessing over it!

Reply

OMG I’ll try the 21 days with you! I’m totally a sugar addict so this will be good for me :)

I love Tennis Court by Lorde!

Ok, I really feel you on the vacationing and sugar thing.

You just get out of your normal life and start eating the most random junk and sugar. Good luck on your sugar detox!! So amazing.

Healthy treat alternative: Archer Farms (Target brand) Fruit Strips. 100% fruit with no sugar or sugar substitutes. This is my go to snack whenever I decide to go sugar free for a couple of weeks.

i will join you!!! I will still eat fruits! but yes, i will do it too!! Are you eating bread at tall?

Reply

I’m in for the challenge!!!

I REALLY need to cut out sugar. I will have to start tomorrow as I have already eaten four hershey full size bars………………ugh………… but I wonder if I should still sprinkle cinnamon sugar on granny smith apples?

St. George would be such a fun place to grow up! I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. Great place to grow up! Great weather year round.

I mostly listen to NPR when I am driving around. Yep I am one of those boring old ladies (who is only 25) that listens to talk radio.

Your egg/rice/zucchini combo looks awesome. I sometimes put spinach/avocado/tomato/onion in with my eggs!

Love that you are doing 21 days without sugar! So awesome. I really want to do a sugar cleanse one day. Sometimes I go days without sugar just because I don’t feel like I need it, then I eat a piece of cake and it is sugar OVERLOAD and I feel awful. I can’t stay away from ice cream though :) I will try it soon hopefully!

Reply

I have the same sugar problem. But, no, I don’t want to do the challenge. Haha.
Grew up in Iowa. Still here. Love the Midwest.

Reply

I am in! I just posted something similar this morning. Time to eat better!

I grew up here in the Midwest, just one city over from where I live now.

I listen to alternative music when driving around.

I have veggies for breakfast often. I love a good veggie scramble or omelet!

I’m a huge fan of 21 day sugar detox & whole 30. Hopefully you love it as much as I do.

Love,
A former donut addict…..

Ill def. be in on that 21 days with no sugar thing!! Can I start tomorrow b/c today is my birthday and I have a couple of Georgetown Cupcakes to eat ;)

I put leftover veggies in my egg scramble in the mornings YUM!

P.S By a couple of cupcakes there is really a dozen but I am sharing with my daughter and husband!! Ill have to send the rest to his work tomorrow.

Reply

Good for you! I would never ever even attempt to go 21 days without sugar. I don’t eat much on a daily basis, but when I need it, it’s not a situation anyone wants to get involved with trying to stop.

I think the only time I do veggies for breakfast would be in a scramble or omelet. Does salsa in a breakfast burrito count?

I have a pretty decent commute to work, during which I listen to Spotify all the way. I really like the pre-made mixes and listening to other people’s playlists because it’s a fun way to discover new stuff.

Reply

Depends what kind of sugar we are talking! I have total faith in your self control, but 21 days without fruit would kill me a little inside.

Your photos are beautiful! I am glad you had such a fab trip!

I gave up sugar for Lent. The first week to 10 days was pretty difficult, but it did get easier. I keep thinking that I’d like to do it again, but also include refined sugars and processed foods… so far, I can’t get past the “thinking” stage! Good luck! You strike me as someone who is always really committed to things you start, so I’m sure you’ll do just fine! Please blog about it along the way! :)

Reply

You can totally go without sugar! I have a major sweet tooth and used to love indulging in candy bars and anything sweet but now I only enjoy sugary treats every once in a while.

I was born and raised in Seattle and have lived here my whole life! I do have veggies for breakfast every now and then. I love Brussels sprouts with eggs and chicken apple sausage! It’s so simple but delicious!

Reply

Count me in too, this has come at the right time for me, my skin is in bits at the moment, and I have been sick recently, I need to get more nutrients my body is craving it, and all I am giving it in return is rubbish! I think 21 days is challenging but manageable (or those could be famous last words :) )

Reply

Yes, I’m in 21 days without sugar, can I start tomorrow? I just had candy. How can we hold ourselves accountable?

Reply

When I have egg white omlets…I put red and green peppers as well as well as onions…and cheese of course;)

I totally will do it! I need to! The summer kills me, bc I will literally eat freeze pops all day and no food! Just bc I’m soooo hot….

Reply

I love your playlist!!
I will totally do the 21 days sans sugar!!! I love a challenge. Especially when it will benefit my health!

Reply

I’m a Philly girl, born and raised. And veggies for breakfast are the bomb, I love thick tomato slices with lots of crushed pepper and salt on top of a bagel. Or veggies mixed into scrambled eggs.

Reply

That salad looks awesome!!!

I love the song Glitter in the Air too.

I went off sugar for a year once….it was the worst thing I’ve ever done. haha. Now I just eat desserts in small portions when I want, and it usually ends up being every day. :)

I grew up in Alaska and live in San Diego now – and I can’t wait to be able to take my 3 kids there some day to explore and see how different it is from where they are growing up.
I am currently listening to an audio book – “The Secret Race”, I got a bit obsessed with the Tour de France this year. Thank you for sharing your playlist!!
I add spinach to my breakfast smoothies but have been loving seeing the foods you and your daughter eat, you are such a good mom!
I am currently trying to go 21 days without beer (don’t judge me, I love a good beer after a run!) I am curious to see how your 21 days go, good luck!

Where did you grow up?!? Small town, Alabama. Moved away for a while, but raising my son here. I really love it here.

What do you listen to when you are driving around?!? Worship sometimes, 80s music is always a “yes” for me, too.

Do you ever have veggies with breakfast… in what? YES. Green smoothie sometimes, leftovers (especially something like fajita veggies from the local mexican place, where they’ve got the lard on them), I will eat those cold. They’re so yummy.

Anyone want to go 21 days with me? I have gone vegan (1 month solid so far) and I gave up diet soda and complaining, too. One of these three is not going well but the other two are sticking. All I have left is dark chocolate. So… I’m with you in spirit. You can do it! ;)

Reply

I’m not the only one!! I absolutely love sweet things too. I have tried in the past (too many times) to cut dessert out but somehow I’m really not that successful. I need more energy too and I know that cutting back on desserts is the answer for me! I’m in! No more sugar!

Reply

I grew up in Eastern Oregon. I wish we had some trails a bit closer to us, your trail runs make me jealous every time!

I am just recovering from an injury and have been eating like I am running. So, I am up for 21 days without sugar. Starting tomorrow for me! The last few days I have been using your idea of yogurt and berries after dinner though. It gets me through the evening without a treat.

Reply

No desserts or candy? I’m in. I know once I get into the swing of it my cravings will stop. I’m going to throw in no fast food too. I just signed up for a half marathon in October and I want to get faster and part of that is getting my nutrition in gear!

Reply

I’m an all or nothing sugar eater too! I always cheat and give up around special occasions– I would love it if you had any tips for how you’re going to work around sugar during Brooke’s bday celebrations.

Reply

Good luck with the no sugar thing! I did a Whole 30 that includes no sugar and it made such a difference on my sweet tooth (not that I don’t still indulge hehe) I’ve gotten lazy with it recently so I think I need a reset soon.

Also those desert pictures are beautiful!

You’re an inspiration Janae! Keep it up!

Reply

That breakfast looks yum! No way I can go without sugar for 21 days. Good luck

Reply

OMG that salad looks amazing!!

Reply

I am obsessed with Turn Down for What too :) best car song right now IMO. That 21 days actually sounds like a great idea- I’ve been going pretty hard on the sweets lately too.

Reply

I am originally from a farm in the middle of no where in SD.

I love veggies mixed with eggs/potatoes and cheese

And no..I am not giving up sugar. I would be more willing to give up processed foods/sugar where homemade desserts would be acceptable.

Reply

I’m going 30 days soon!! My husband and I are gonna do a Whole30, just haven’t decided if we’re starting August 1st or 11th… out of town birthday party on the 9th might be a bit tricky ;)

I grew up in Santa Cruz, Ca, and even though I now live by the beach in Arroyo Grande, I miss Santa Cruz ALL the time! It will always be home :)

When I travel with my girls we sing a lot of “Frozen”… But when I’m by myself I like to listen to music I can sing along too at the top of my lungs – Barry Manilow, Neal Diamond, Air Supply, Social Distortion, Violent Femmes, The Pogues… My playlist is a bit more than eclectic, more like schizophrenic!

Sounds like a great trip, enjoy being back in your own bed & kitchen!!

Reply

ohh man. I have tried to just cut back on sugar and eat it in appropriate portion sizes as well as trying to cut it out completely….big fat fail, everytime. wow that sounds really discouraging but don’t let it be- I believe in you!!! maybe if you can do it I can do it too (eventually…)

Reply

What a fun drive! I love the desert, though I’ve never made it to St George for a visit. I know this is a crazy question…but do you know anything about the tile in your Aunt’s house? I think it’s beautiful, and my husband thinks it’s stained concrete. If you have any information I’d love to hear it! =)

omg dcfc lack of color and one republic runs out, classic perfection and new song amazingness! love those jams!
grew up in wheeling, wv
actually i’m doing a sugar cleanse starting aug 1. had to get thru july (b-day month!), and its been out of control. start fresh, and lots of fruit!

Reply

All I can say is good luck I was going to do this 2 months ago and I lasted two days. I am a big stress eater (doughnuts!) and like to reward myself with food, and it was cray cray. If you stick to it you are a saint.

Reply

I love how much you love Regina Spektor …. Eet is my all time fave of hers.

I will not go 21 days with you, but I will cheer you the heck on. :) :) :)

I am 100% positive beyond a shadow of a doubt that you can and will do anything you put your mind to do. Not everyone has it in them. But you? Girl you do.

I love southern Utah (headed there at the end of the week). Growing up, I moved about every 2 years. Between Utah and Pennsylvania, I lived in 15 homes before I turned 18.

I will not join you on the 21 day challenge. I believe in mindful eating, moderation. If I crave sugar, I will eat sugar–natural or otherwise. But I’m sure you’ll make it through just fine.

Reply

I am in the same vacation place you are.
How can I get that salad just about now, that has every nutrient I have been missing.
We will keep your streak Thursday, no worries! :)

Reply

What self-timer app did you get?! I need one of those!! I believe in you that you can totally go 21 days without treats!!!!!!!

I was near St George (Zion NP – hiked up Angel’s Landing!) last week on vacation. So pretty around that area. We also toured Bryce and the Grand Canyon. I grew up in near Toronto, ON – no mountains, no desert- but lots of escarpments, forests, lakes and farm land.

Oh my goodness I don’t think I could do 21 days without sugar. I may need to try that sometime though because I know I eat way too much sugar. It’s an addiction I just can’t seem to break.
