My Post Workout Meal

Every now and then I like to eat something with actual nutrients and not just straight sugar and I ESPECIALLY like to do this right after my workouts.

My go to meal after a workout is an omelet packed with veggies, toast and my beloved Green Machine juice.

(Brooke had her eyes on the red velvet cupcakes in the cart next to us)

After years of researching and trying to perfect the omelet we finally found the KEY to making the perfect one:  BISQUICK.  Bisquick makes the omelet more hearty and substantial.  It also adds a really unique flavor and makes it a lot easier to flip and look pretty.   I used to use protein powders after a workout to get some protein in but I just love eggs so much more now.

My favorite omelet combo:

-3 eggs (or you could do 2 eggs and 2 egg whites)

-1/4 cup milk

-2 tbsp. Bisquick

-Salt, pepper and cayenne pepper to taste.

My favorite add-ins:  spinach, tomatoes, ham, cheese, green peppers and every single vegetable you can think of.

And just because these pictures make me extremely happy:

And just because I want you to feel bad for my poor feet today:

I don’t know what I was thinking when I put these on this morning.  Should have worn my PureFlows to church. I will never wear heels again.

What do you usually eat right after a workout?

Do you use protein powders?  Which ones?

How often do you wear heels?  Can you please teach me how in the world to walk in those things?

Bisquick, huh? That’s actually really interesting! I wonder if you can use cornmeal… And I love your lacy white top!

Addicted to shoes.
More addicted to heels. High high high ones.
I blame the pita for being tall.
Addicted to protein shakes. Muscle milk lover.

I usually eat cereal or greek yogurt. Sometimes pancakes :)

I rarely ever wear heels!

Hey, I went to costco yesterday too :)))) I have plenty of frosted mini wheats now!

Hope your weekend is going well!

Haha I don’t know how to walk in heels so I totally feel for you. When I do wear them, I lean on other people to help me stand up and I take them off the second I get anywhere or after the pictures are over. I’ve been known to run barefoot through town because they’re so uncomfortable.
I’m anti-protein powder because my doctors have always told me it’s healthier to just drink a milkshake than a protein shake. My protein comes in the form of steak and chicken (and ice cream, if you want to get down to the nitty gritty details…). It has always worked for me and I don’t see a need to drink protein powder when there is so many delicious foods out there packed with protein!

Bisquick in an omelette!? Who would have thought!

I like olives in mine but I am thinking you would not like that addition:)

The pictures of the B’s together are adorable.

Hey there! I usually have a protein shake or a smoothie with protein in it after a workout! Sometimes when I work out in the morning, I can’t have breakfast and a protein shake so I make oatmeal and add some protein sometimes! I am actually searching (well, debating) on which flavor protein to buy! Mine ran out. I have been using milk chocolate, but saw cupcake batter and cookies n cream, which both have my eye ;) And yes! I LOVE heels! I teach in them usually every day. I have found, though, that if I wear them all day, I cannot workout or run after school. Has to be done beforehand so my feet don’t hurt! :)

Reply

I haven’t worn heels since prom in high school—and even then I took them off when I got inside. I can run marathons…but HEELS???!!! Those things are torture!

Reply

Bisquick, I have never thought of that, interesting. I love me some running shoes, but I REALLY love me some heels :)
Hands down my favorite post0run meal is my long run meal, pb toast with jelly, pumpkin, and sliced banana!

Reply

I usually have a protein drink with vega protein after a run – that is after my 3 children and husband attack me asking for food:) I love the Vega smoothie powder and Vega sport and Vega one – so good! I also love plantfusion, which is a little cheaper than Vega, so I mix. I also have Udi’s toast with coconut oil and chia seeds for some carbs! I love toast. I actually wore my pure connects to church today! HA! And my lululemon jacket – it was casual sunday….for me;-) I’m usually in the nursery with the little ones anyway, so it doesn’t really matter.

Reply

Where do you find Udi’s bread?…Would Trader Joe’s have it?

Reply

Our Trader Joe’s in Georgia carries Udi brand gluten free breads & etc. I’ve also seen it at Publix.

Reply

I’ve seen it at Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s and Fred Meyer (Kroger Stores) And its the best GF bread I can find :)

Right after a hard workout I go for a banana and a glass of chocolate milk :) or a greek yogurt. I am actually not a fan of milk but I can do chocolate milk and it is the quickest easiest way to get the protein down!
I do use protein powder…EAS lean 15. I put the chocolate in a milkshake and it then magically becomes healthy :)! I also put vanilla in fruit smoothies!
My husband is a pastor in our town and I NEVER wear heels! I am all for wearing your Brooks to church :)….okay maybe not but I am all about flats :)!
Very cute Brooke and daddy pics!

PS…I think I need to try that Green Machine juice…..it just looks like it might not taste good!

Reply

Those pics are adorable! I too am a recent green machine convert- it has been my post Yoga go to recently. I also just added Brooks PureCadence into my shoe rotation (flat footed runner over here, yay for a minimalist-ish stability shoe!) and it has changed my life, the Pure line is so amazing!

Reply

I have been on a huge egg kick lately. Normally I have them for either lunch or dinner. I generally have toast and peanut butter after a run. That is breakfast number one have my run in the morning. 2 or so hours later I have oatmeal with raisins and a banana.

Reply

I bought a bottle of that Green Machine juice a couple of weeks ago after you talked about it, but I cannot bring myself to drink it-I don’t know why, I LOVE all types of veggies. I think I’m worried about the consistency. Pictures of Brooke and Billy are adorable.

Reply

It doesn’t taste like vegetables, there is fruit too and that’s mostly what you Tate:) Try it!

I am with you! I wonder if we throw it in the blender with some ice?

I was going to bring it to work today but it’s still in the fridge-maybe I should blend it into a smoothie!!

Reply

I used to wear heels every day to work. When I started teaching, I gave them up. Best decision ever!

Reply

Those pictures of Brooke and Billy = straight up the most adorable thing on the face of the planet!!!!! But really, so cute :))

My mother-in-law wears Tevas to church every Sunday. Comfy and practical! I love her!

Have to eat after a workout! I boil a giant pot of eggs and put them in the fridge to eat as snacks all the time. Post-workout, pre-workout, during workout. I love them!

Reply

I usually have a smoothie or banana after a hard workout :)
I wear heels every day for work, I think the trick is to buy good shoes! I have a couple of pairs of Lands End heels that I love, I can wear them all day and they are still comfortable. Cute photos of Brooke!

Reply

I wore heels ONCE while teaching and haven’t worn them since! My feet hurt so had by the end of the day! I’m going to try some bisquick in my omlets- usually I eat a Greek yogurt after running.

Reply

Awesome tip about the bisquick! I definitely need to try that because I am the WORST at omelette flipping. It usually just ends up being scrambled eggs with lots of surprising add ins (which are still delicious but definitely not as fancy or pretty).

I am no good at walking in heels unless they are wedges, then I’m a little bit better but not much. I applaud those celebs and supermodels who walk around in them all day long like it’s no big deal. Because they must either have amazing calves and glutes or must not have the ability to feel their feet at all anymore!

Reply

I have been contemplating my protein powder drinking, I really try to steer clear of a lot of processed foods but since I am a vegetarian I tend to lean on the protein powder following a workout. I am going to research the Vega protein mixes, I love that they are plant based. Heels?! I don’t remember the last time I dusted off a pair of those!

Reply

My hip and its resultant oh-so-sexy limp make walking in heels rather unattractive which sort of defeats the whole purpose of wearing them :(

How can a mom and her baby look so totally cute in Costco? You two are adorable :)

Reply

Those pictures of Brooke and Billy made me happy, too :) There’s nothing quite like seeing a man with his daughter <3

And I'm not really the biggest fan of protein powders either. I'll use them in a pinch when I want to add something extra to smoothies, but I usually prefer to get my protein from eggs, yogurt, and chicken… although not necessarily all together ;)

Reply

Brooke in the hat looking at Billy…. so sweet! I usually wait about an hour after workouts to eat. I know it’s best to eat right away but I just can’t stomach it!

Reply

I can’t walk in heals either. I very seldom wear them and blame the fact that I’m in marathong training as an excuse to always wear flats!!!

Chocolate milk after a run is ther best

Reply

I keep looking at my Costco for those giant bottles of Naked Juice (I’m a huge fan of the Green Machine, too) but they apparently don’t have them in my area. :( I usually do a recovery drink right after my workouts because I have a hard time eating for about an hour after my harder and longer runs. I’m sorry your feet are bothering you! I hardly ever wear heels when I’m in serious training mode–I don’t want to screw up my feet or calves and have problems running. Have a great Sunday!

Reply

I use vega protein powder…chocolate flavor. I like it bc it’s vegan and not full of sugar.
I love love love heels…I have too many of them but unfortunately since having two kids and being a stay at home mom I don’t wear them very often. It’s hard to chase your kids around wearing 4 inch heels :).

Reply

Oh goodness I try to avoid heels if at all possible. They hurt so badly after a couple hours and I look so awkward walking in them!

Reply

i’ve been on a huge egg kick, too! i usually make an egg sandwich with hummus, spinach, and basically any veggie i have in the fridge (usually tomatoes, bell peppers, and mushrooms). so easy and filling right after a workout!

Reply

Huh biscuit!!? Who knew!!! I am totally trying that. I do make a protein shake allot of mornings before work – especially if I am doing a gym workout. This last one I got is the Trader Joe’s version. I add yogurt, almond milk and frozen banana (sometimes spinach). Ugh heels. My coworkers laugh when I wear them, they make bets on how soon I change to flats! http://www.colorushealthy.com

Reply

I wear heels on Sundays to church too–LOVE heels. Love ’em. I sort of grew up on them b/c I was such a girly girl–so I had to have them ;) Just a lot of practice walking in them I guess?

I love omelettes too!!!

Reply

I’m like you – love eggs after a long run, particularly omelets with a mix of protein and carbs in veges. Church and special going out occassions are where I normally wear heals and I still have to ask my husband whether i look like I am walking normally in them or not. If the answer is no I take them off :)

Reply

Ha! Thought I had a running injury a while ago ( had a stress fracture on my 4th metatarsal years ago and thought it had returned). Turned out it didn’t hurt while running – only while wearing heels. So happily I don’t have a running injury but sadly I’ve cut out all heels in my life. Worth the trade off to keep me running. Heels will find a place in your life again. No harm shelving them for now.

Thanks for the posts:)

Reply

I eat breakfast lol which either consists of oatmeal with some greek yogurt for protein, chia seeds, and some sort of fruit OR an omelet filled with veggies :)

I don’t really like protein powders. I think that you should be able to get all of your nutrients from normal foods. Plus they taste gross LOL

I wear heels to church and then special occasions. I try to only buy comfortable heels tho :)

Reply

I use Vega one protein powder and enjoy it. I’m curious to try/hear about Vega sport though.
I had never worn a pair heels until a few years ago (and I’m almost 30.) After I bought them I had to have my friends teach me how to walk in them. At that time i never thought i would be able to wear anything with more then a one inch heel. After a bunch of practice i found my heel wearing abilities, though I still don’t wear anything crazy high. While I rarely wear heels, I feel that I can now do so without looking ridiculous, and having the constant fear of falling.

Reply

I use the vega sport and LOVE it!! I use both chocolate and vanilla.

Reply

I have a hard time eating right before a workout but I am ravenous afterwards.
I LOVE heels and employ the philosophy the higher the heel the closer to God. Most of my heels are actually comfortable.

Reply

IHOP puts a little pancake batter in their omelettes too! They say it makes them more fluffy.

I dont like protein powders. They seem to cause me bloating.

My favorite thing to eat is a BIG salad with lots of dressing! I think I like the salt in it. I do try to add some protein to it, because I think your supposed to be giving your body protein post workout.

Reply

Gotta love babies….Of course mine are 26/20 now.

I have been adding ground flax seed to eggs for some additional “power” And most of the eggs i get are free range chickens that are also fed flax as part of their diets.

I love a veggie omelet that is more veggies than egg- great pictures.

Reply

I never wear heels but I have to know where you got that top!

Reply

H & M!!! Get it!!!!

Heels are so hard for me to wear post knee injury. I love them, but oww!

And gosh, she’s growing SO fast!

Right after a workout I love lettuce wraps. Super easy to make, super yummy.

I love wearing heels to church. 5+ inches every week. Love. The trick to walking in them is to trust the heel and walk normally. It’s not so bad.

Reply

I eat omelets after long runs too but my method is to pour the eggs in a super hot pan and let it cook for about a minute and then instead of flipping them I turn the heat way down and put all my toppings on and then put a lid over the pan for a few more minutes – it kind of steams everything and makes it really easy to fold over and slide out of the pan. My omelets have never been more beautiful or tasty!!

Reply

I drink protein when I need a quick meal after a workout and it works for me!

Reply

The Bisquick trick is totally something Im going to have to try. My omelettes alway end up more like a scramble and I can never get them right! I usually eat a bowl of oatmeal after a workout because I workout in the early morning. But if I do it in the after noon I eat an apple and PB.

Reply

Best post work out food for me = a banana with peanut butter and almond milk… Either throw it all in the blender with ice or just eat the pb&b and drink the milk. Dark chocolate also works after a workout… It is known (by me) to help with recovery after a long run :)

Reply

i always eat a banana and protein drink (just powder and ice water). then maybe i’ll have a veggie packed salad with cottage cheese and pb toast. but i also eat a TON of omlettes. i do 3 egg whites, any veggie i find in the fridge and have been adding feta. LOVE me some feta. never tried the bisquick thing though, may have to give it a try.

as for the heels? i like chunky ones. but i have a 2 yr old so i pretty much wear flats or knee boots to church right now since it’s winter in minnesota! that and i’m already 5’9. it honestly feels a little wierd to tower over my bishop;)

Reply

I made a breakfast scramble yesterday and today: eggs, loads of spinach and chicken sausage! So delicious!

Reply

Ooh, Bisquick in omelettes interesting tip!!

Haha, you would probably be so scared of my shoe collection, it’s about 50% shoes. But I also love wedges which are usually easier to wear!

Reply

I’ve never thought about adding Bisquick to eggs. Genius! I can never make omelets–they always just turn into scrambled eggs. I’ll have to try that next time!

Reply

you look so beautiful momma!

Reply

Always eat after a run. Even if its just a little bit.
I am in search of a great protein powder. I have been using Pure Protein because it has fiber and only 15 grams of protein. I’m considering trying egg white protein powder. Unfortunately women tend to be intolerant of really high protein, protein powders. We tend to get , er, backed up.
Your family is so adorable!

Reply

I’ve been using my protein powder to make little protein cakes or pancakes (with banana and egg in there). I’ve also been eating that kind of thing for breakfast because it keeps me so full!

Reply

That omelete sounds tasty…but bisquick!? What does that do to the omelete?? I am intrigued!!!

Reply

I usually only wear heals because either: a – I really have to wear them for an outfit to make any sense or b – It’s been awhile since I wore them, and I forgot how painful they were. It’s really too bad heels hurt. They really do make everyone’s legs look awesome. Oh well. I’m more of a flats girl myself.

Reply

You need to try making a frittata! Best part? You can put any ingredient in it that you love. It’s also much easier to make than an omelette. I only say that because I make ugly omelettes . ;-)

Enjoy!

There is a diner by us that uses biscuik in their omelets and they are HUMUNGOUS. It’s like they use 4 eggs and then add to that. They are crazy good.

I rarely ever wear heels. These days, I usually just wear slippers because I never leave the house.

Reply

Bisquick! Never would have thought to try that (buy I’m definitely going to after my run today!) Thanks for the great tip. P.s. the pictures of Brooke and Billy totally made my heart melt. So sweet!

Love the pictures-adorable, as always!
I’ve also been trying to make omelets, unsuccessfully lately…I’m going to try your recipe! Thank you for this!

Reply

I do use protein powders sometimes. I love eggs but I can’t eat them anymore, I get really sick. It’s sad. I try to time my workouts with lunch so I can eat as soon as I’m done. Usually a big salad or leftovers. I love salads, but I put a lot more in them than just cold veggies.
I never wear heels. It’s just not worth it to be that uncomfortable. Also, I think the ladies that wear them all the time still look funny when they are walking around. They look so stiff and unnatural.

Reply

Yes, within a half hour of working out so I can rebuild.
I use Muscle Milk Light- Chocolate and love to make smoothies with it and a banana.

No heels really ever. I’m a teacher… and a runner. I’m trying to save my tootsies.

Reply

I love oatmeal or anything with peanut butter after a workout. Yummy :D I don’t really wear heels and if I do, they’re on my boots. I NEVER wear stilettos or small heels; my heels are always wedges or at least a couple inches wide. I have bad knees and can’t balance otherwise

Reply

I normally eat scrambled eggs with vegetables and toast. I have trouble with omelets so I stick to scrambles

Reply

I’m so bad at flipping omelets that I usually give up and it turns into a scrambled egg with [ insert mix-ins here ] mixed in. So it’s usually just a spinach scramble. I’ll have to try using Bisquik – I hope that means I can have a real omelet one day….made at home.

Reply

Bisquick?! Wow, never would have thought of that but will definitely give it a try….I always have trouble flipping omelets so I’m glad to hear that makes it easier. Thanks for the tip.

After a run I like to have vanilla whey protein (I buy the whole foods 365 brand) with tart cherry juice. As far as food I like to sauté vegetables and serve with fried eggs on top. http://www.therunivore.com/my-favorite-post-run-meal-skillet-vegetables-with-eggs/

Reply

Love, love, LOVE Green Machine Naked juice! The hubby bought me the same exact one from Costco, and I can’t wait to crack it open after my morning treadmill run tomorrow! :-)

P.S. I love wearing heels actually – the one in your post looks great! My feet do appreciate a break every now and then though…hence I have comfy wedge heeled boots on today. ;)
