Brookies, lunchfast and a run to a new lake.

January 31, 2013

It was a good morning.  I got to talk to my sister for a while on the phone which is the best way to start the day.  I think she is mad at me because after a while of talking I told her I had to go so I could get out and run before it to got too hot outside (she lives in Utah and said it is the worst winter they have had in a long time).

I did the first 4 miles on the treadmill and when Brooke woke up I did 8 with her on the bike path to a new lake that we had never ran to before.

I am sure glad I got the orange construction thingee in the picture and just the corner or Brooke’s head.  Talent.

IMG 7607

PRO Compression sent us some awesome new compression socks/sleeves and I can’t wait to do a review (and giveaway) for you on the blog.  Brooke even has a few things to say about her pink pair.

I decided that today would be the best day of all to have lunchfast because I was too hungry to make anything else, I am hooked on my new yogurts and the box of Life has been calling my name for days.  Breakfast foods are in fact the best.  You cannot disagree with me on that one.  Bowl one of three… that stuff is addicting.  I had the last of the Green Monster Naked juice… guess I am forced to go to Costco again.

Sarah from Germany made my day today when she told me about BROOKIES!!!

Screen Shot 2013 01 31 at 10 05 28 AM

A Brookie is a brownie + cookie and the name sounds just like my daughters name.  I knew there was a reason I named her Brooke and be prepared to read Brookie in every post from here on out because that is her new nickname.

This could not be any more perfect.

To celebrate I will make Brookies for dinner.

————————————————————————————-

Do you use compression socks?  What kind?  Colors?

Brookie:  would you rather have a cookie or a brownie right this second?

Are you a milk drinker?  Do you just like it in cereal?  What percent do you usually buy?

If you have a sister… how often do you get to talk to her?

Elizabeth @ My Neon Running Shoes January 31, 2013 at 2:06 pm

I have made brookies several times over the past few years. AMAZING! Perfect choice. I mainly drink chocolate milk… and yes add it to cereal! So I’m just thinking… 3 weeks from today I will be seeing you in Utah :-) Words can’t express how much I am looking forward to it. I might have to bring you a little taste of Texas to convince you to come hang out with me here soon ;-)

Brookies, yum!! Why haven’t I thought of that before? I’ve always loved the name Brooke but you can add +1 to that list of reasons now.

As for milk, I always drink whole milk. I’d rather have less and drink full-fat than a bunch of thin milk. If I put skim on my cereal I’m hungry again in 5 minutes.

Reply

Michelle January 31, 2013 at 2:08 pm

Love love LOVE compression socks. As we speak I am wearing a hot pink pair in Panera Bread (totally normal.)
I used to always drink non-fat milk growing up but now I am addicted to unsweetened vanilla almond milk! If you haven’t, definitely try out the Almond Breeze kind, makes cereal even more delicious :)

I also love almond milk! As a RD, I often suggest trying So Delicious Almond Milk Plus Protein – 5g protein per serving compared with only 1g in other brands – for anyone who wants a little extra protein in their day! Yum!

The Brookie thing is SO cute! I love it!!

I use ProCompression compression socks for long runs and races. I have the black and the hot pink ones! I really like them.

Cookie or brownie is a nearly impossible decision for me to make, but I would have to say brownie just because I haven’t had one in a while.

I’ll only drink milk if it’s chocolate milk. Whenever I eat cereal I never drink the left over milk. I usually just try to pour as little as possible so the cereal is wet and then just rinse the bowl after. We usually buy 2%

I’m an only child! But I wish I had a sister.

Reply

Sarah January 31, 2013 at 2:10 pm

That reminds me of the brookies my friend used to make!! She did them a little bit differently – she would bake the cookies and brownies separately, sandwich a slice of brownie between two cookies, and hold the whole thing together with marshmallow creme!! So yummy! :)

chelsea @ averytoday January 31, 2013 at 2:10 pm

loooooove brookies! we almost opted to have them at our wedding even…but decided on just plain brownies instead (stupid budget). right now i’d love to eat a freshly baked chocolate chip cookie with my real fancy lactaid milk, since i’m lactose intolerant….sexy i know. i have a sister that lives in flagstaff, az and i’m in portland, or and we probably talk once a week! happy to hear about your pretty run…i’m about to try a quick run in the rain.

Diana January 31, 2013 at 2:11 pm

I have two pairs of compression sleeves. Mostly I wear them at night if my shins are bothering me.

Cookie trumps brownie any day. But I have been told I’m weird.

I have no sisters, and for that I am thankful – growing up with a brother was hard enough!

I do drink milk – we buy 2% but back when I was super duper skinny and didn’t know any better, I drank whole. Am I allowed to say that 2% milk made me fat? Actually, I doubt I could stomach whole milk now. Blargh.

Aren’t you glad you asked? =)

You can google Coyote Creek Bike Trail. I start at the start off of the Cochrane exit on 101-heading east. It goes for 18 miles. I’ve only ever gone 6 -and then turned around. It’s clean, the bathrooms at the start are so clean, the riders, runners, walkers are friendly and courteous and the scenery changes. Love it.

I just signed up for the lululemon half in Vancouver this summer and headed out in -24 weather today to run ohh 3 miles not good. Wish I could love running but just not happening. The gym cycling crossfit yes love it. Running is like torture for me. Brookies look to good!!! Love the pro compression socks need a pair of those!!

I drink milk with meals and in ceral, (1%) but I don’t usually drink it when I’m thirsty.

I gmail chat with my sister basically all day long every day.

I have made brookie’s several times (there is actually a box mix for such a thing. I think they are called Betty Crocker Ultimates and they are delicious). So I choose that instead of having to pick cookie or brownie. They relaly are the best of both worlds.

Look at you friggin running 12 miles, on a week day, just after you PLACED in a TRAIL half marathon! How in the world are you so awesome?

I have a pair of pro compression socks and I LOVE them. I bought them when I was training for the full marathon. I only wore them on my really long runs or if my shins were acting up, but I wear them for recovery all the time.

I drink almond milk. I love Life cereal (cinnamon flavor only) but I prefer it out of the box, rather than with milk. It gets too soggy too quick for me. I buy 2% for the Evan and Ross. Anna doesn’t really like it…yet we still go through 2 gallons of it a week.

Yay for sisters and good talks! I talk to my sisters at least 5 days a week. They are the best. And your sister is right – worst. winter. ever. Today the sun came out though and it has been good. I think today will be the first day the whole month that Anna will get to have recess because the temp is actually above freezing!

Reply

Lauren January 31, 2013 at 2:16 pm

I have had/made brownies+ cookies before but never knew they were called Brookies. I like that. We drink skim, and tons of it. My husband and I go through a gallon about over 4-6 days. I’d drink about a gallon in one sitting if I had some Brookies to go with it!

1. Yes. PROcompression sleeves. Pink. :) I think they’re too short. Like, the distance from the top to the bottom (my knee to ankle) is too short. You agree?

2. Brownie. Always a brownie.

3. Nah. Don’t even like cold cereal. I buy 2% lactose-free for my kiddos.

4. YES. :) I love her like the dickens and we talk 4.5-8 times each week. And we text 841 times per week. And our hubbies are BFFs, which is the cutest thing EVER.

I love running, I run all through my pregnancy till the day i was due.. after that i managed to get back lil by lil, thankfully we lived in apartments with gym that helped.. but was hard cuz i just wanted to be around her.. once i got green light from pediatrician i got a jogging stroller and got outside with her… but as soon as she started walking she wouldnt stay in the stroller, shes way too active and loves walking with me.. now i ran whenever I can but do walk daily with her..
We got a home and now got a treadmill but hard to find the time to get it done when the hubby is not around…
Love your blog and Omg! Brooke is absolutely stunning!

That said, I buy non-fat (the blue milk, some call it) for the little bit that gets used with cereal. Nobody here will drink a glass of milk. We do like Chobani yogurt! I want to be a runner because I eat too many sour patch kids, cheezits and skittles and notice that my pants are getting tight. Your mileage is high enough to maintain that cute figure. Age and gravity are working against me. Can’t remember anymore what the questions are?

CEP are the compression socks that are in my drawer, so far they work great. My sister, who is my virtual running partner, that lives in Kansas City loves them too. I have no sisters….3 brothers, but I have 3 daughters so delighted that they will have that bond with each other that I never had. Started running last year after no 3 was born and love it, hoping to do my first full marathon this year have done a half and a good few 10kms. Loving my new buggy although my distances are not a patch on yours did 4.5 miles last 2 mornings and itsa different experience, but am super excited to get out in the mornings now rather than having to wait till hubbie home from work. Since I am short, I have a hard time getting running tights to fit correctly, so I’m running in capris and compression socks. I don’t have the super cool athletic ones, though. I use the Jobst medical professional, on-my-feet-all-day-at-the-hospital ones that I bought during my clinical rotations. They are great– but boring black. I do drink milk (it is the only calorie-d beverage I drink) and always get “semi-skimmed”, which is a Brit thing and I think is 1.5% or so. It’s delicious!! And, since i’ve lived in the Middle East for 2 years and now England, and my best friend (and younger sister) lives in Orem, I only talk to her about 5 times a year on the phone, but FB every day.

I do use compression stockings and I love them! They’re hot pink, like Brookies.

99.99% of the time I want cookies- they’re my favorite food, but right now a brownie sounds fantastic.

I’m an almond milk drinker- I usually buy unsweetened vanilla. I LOVE cereal and that’s why I don’t buy it- I can binge way too easily on that goodness.

Two sisters- I talk to one of them almost daily and the other just on occasion.

I have pink sleeves, pink socks, pink argyle socks, blue argyle socks….I think that is it.
I don’t do much milk but when I do use it, it is in cereal and it is 2%.
Brownie. Definitely.
I talk or email with my sister every day.

Regretfully I don’t talk to my sister as much as I should or want to. She’s only a phone call away! I just found out she was accepted to a summer fashion program in London so I’m super excited for her!

Please elaborate on how good the Chobani banana is…I am dying to try that and the new pear one. Seems they haven’t quite made their way to CT grocery store yet.

I have one pair of pro compression, purple. I would rather have a cookie. Soy or almond milk. No sister, just a younger bro.

Is there a special recipe for the Brookies?! Or is it just cookie dough on top of brownie batter?!

Reply

The Hungry Runner Girl January 31, 2013 at 4:29 pm

I haven’t found a special one yet but as soon as I do I will make it and post it on the blog!

Betty Crocker sells a mix called “supreme bars” in the grocery store. They are pretty good.

Brownie! I thought Brookies was Brooke’s new nickname as soon as I saw the title.. love that they’re a treat AND a nickname for your lil sweet thang. I just ate a cookie..so I could go for a brownie now ;) I don’t wear compression socks, but I’m still relatively new to the running world (running for two years, first race next month), so I have a lot to learn! And no, I’m not a milk drinker..unless that milk is ice cream, yogurt, or cheese.. I eat cereal dry and usually as a snack.

I do have a sister, and I talk to her EVERY DAY! Well at least through text. FaceTime and Skype comes a few times a month.

Yey, love seeing your sister on the blog again!

Compression socks are my treat after a long run, I putting them on and promptly collapse on the floor for the next half hour :)

I have an older brother. We are four years apart. I couldn’t imagine my life without. He is a big reason of why I am who I am today.

I wish I could try those compression sleeves and socks. I only have a single pair of compression socks and they are the long ones. I also have a pair of compression shorts that I won on a blog. I’ll have to remember from who’s in a minute.

Those brookies look amazing. I’ve made something similar before but those just look to die for.

Can you please review that yogurt? I love bananas but I hate banana flavoring. Does it have chunks of banana in it? I’m so curious about this!

I’ve never used compression socks for running?! Do you wear them for all runs or long runs only?

I have an older sister who had a baby 4 days after I had my little guy in October. We live 10 hours apart, but talk every other day. She’s just the best!

Those brookies sound SO GOOD (and what a perfect name).

I always go for cookies, hands down, but they have to be the soft texture like brownies.

I have one sister. It’s so funny, when we were little we DESPISED each other, but now that we’re older, she’s the one I always go to for anything and everything. I’m trying to convince her to move to the same city as me so we can hang out all the time.

Ahhh, I love compression socks. I only have a pair from running skirts that have little pink hearts on them. I’m too poor to buy pro compression ones. We do live in CA, ya know? :-)

Yay you finally got Brooke her compression socks! I have never used compression socks but have desperately been looking to buy some. I’ve been trying to read old post you (and anyone else on the internet…) have written about brand reviews and any suggestions for the injury prone. I’m super curious about the best ones to use while running, and the differences between sleeves and socks. I can’t wait to read your new review!
I have 5 sisters who i love and miss so much, and sometimes talk to a lot and sometimes go way too long without talking to. I try and facilitate group emails so it’s like we’re all having a conversation together, but it’s so not the same. (They also get mad at me when the weather comes up, so I have stopped mentioning winter days above 60 degrees.)

Looooove my Zensahs. I have a pair in L or XL, which I wear for recovery – because at least they cover the whole length of my calf. I have a red pair that I wear to run, when I don’t care if I look a bit silly – because I have the same problem that you do in your photo: About 3 inches of ankle below the sleeve. For some reason, this drives me bananas. Why can’t they make them a smidge longer (with same tightness) to cover my WHOLE calf?!?!

BROWNIE. I eat milk in cereal, and lots in my coffee, and some with chocolate. This equals about 1-1.5 gallons/week (I eat a lot of cereal). My husband thinks we should just buy a cow.

I really like skim, but we can’t get that here (only 2% or whole), so I just add lots of ice cubes. [Don't judge.]

Those Brookies sound amazing…your getting the best of both worlds! I need to whip those up but make them gluten free!!!
I’ve never tried compression socks. I’m really dying to try them!!!!! Being a huge runner and have done 4 1/2 marathons I think its time I get my act together!!! I need to win a pair:-)
As for milk…almond milk all the way. My husband drinks 1% which causes a problem…2 different kinds of milk that neither one of us can ever finish!!!!

I love compression! Pro Compression is the best.

I used to drink milk like crazy as a kid, but now I just have it in cereal or when we have something really chocolatey for dessert. We buy skim.

I have an older sister who lives in San Fran. We probably talk, email, text, a couple times a month.

Brookies are so. dang. good. My roommate’s mom used to send her back a big container of brookies when she went home for the weekend and we’d demolish all of them within 2 days. I have no control around so much chocolate :)

I love milk, skim for me please! It would be nice to have some Brookies to eat eith my milk :)

Those look so good! I think it’s Betty Crocker that makes a boxed version where it includes everything to make both the cookies and the brownies and you just add eggs, etc. and bake them… easy and yummy!! My younger cousin’s name is Brooke and I always call her Brookie, so I love that nickname. :)

I just started wearing compression socks, but I love them!

I had Cinnamon Life cereal for breakfast this morning! Best cereal everrrrr!

I wish I lived in Cali right now…well actually all the time…but especially right now because it was about 70 degrees here in Charlotte, NC on Tuesday and Wednesday and now it’s about 36 degrees out. NOT FUN! I don’t usually mind colder weather, but once Christmas is over I’m honestly ready for Spring!

Have a great weekend girl!

My compression socks are purple – is there a better color?

Milk Whole – young growing children. (hard on the tummy when I add it to mashed potatoes…or are the potatoes to blame for that problem?)

Right now – there is no way I could decide between a brownie / cookie. Which has to be the reason someone created those! MUST RESIST trying them!

We call my daughter Brookie, too :) My 2 yr old son will only her her that. We make Brookies as part of our Christmas cookie collection, and she thinks it is the best thing ever. We also include them in her birthday goodie bags for friends, so she can tell them they are called Brookies just like her.

I love milk– we buy ours from a dairy and get it straight out of the bulk tank- yes- the cream does rise to the top. When you want a glass you just shake the pitcher to mix in the cream and enjoy!! Nothing wrong with full fat, right??

compression socks: yes, two pairs of socks: tan argyle and blue argyle (ProCompression); one pair of calf sleeves: hot pink (no clue what brand)!

I have a younger sister, we have pretty sporadic communication phone, text and pinterest! She canceled all other forms of social media… rude :)

I have a dairy intolerance so I am incredibly grateful for the vegan movement… almond milk, fake butter… etc.!
