My Treadmill’s New Home:

Is outside. Weird, right?

DSC 3324

Reasons that a runner might put her treadmill outside when that defeats the purpose of having a treadmill.

1. We live in a 675 square foot apartment and for some reason he doesn’t agree with me that we should just not have a bed and put a really nice foam pad on top of the treadmill belt and sleep on that.

2. The weather here is perfect and so I will be able to run outside all year long outside. But why wouldn’t I just run outside on the streets and trails like a normal runner then? Most of the time I will take Brooke in the jogger but there will be many days that the only time I can fit in a run is late at night or early in the morning when it is dark and you couldn’t pay me to run by myself in the dark. I also plan to do a few of my runs each week during her nap time and this way I can just roll her crib on over to the glass door and watch her the whole time.

3. I want to entertain my neighbors and have them guessing about my sanity levels.

We are going to buy a tarp to cover it and we are crossing our fingers that this will be enough to keep her safe and sound. I have had way too many good memories with her to sell her, she is a part of the family.

Let’s just hope that deck of ours is sturdy.

—————————————————————

Last night Brooke woke up 5 times. Her hunger levels are out of control which makes me happy because it shows how similar we are. For me in my situation this is totally fine that she wakes up so much because I just nap when she does during the day but for those working moms out there and moms that have other kids to watch, you are incredible!

It only took us until noon to finally be ready to leave the house. Note to self: Never ever schedule anything before noon.

Now we are driving around deciding where to go to lunch… I want a salad the size of New Mexico so that is kind of a requirement in our search.

PS Apple slices make an amazing substitute for a spoon when you forget to bring one.

Photo 2

And apple slices make an even more amazing substitute for a knife into pb even when you have a knife readily available.

Photo 1 1

I am kind of into apples lately.

We live on a California King bed. 6’9″ is a whole lottttta pita even for that huge bed. Seriously considering sleeping on my TM.

Reply

I love that you understand the love for running on a treadmill even if it is outside:) WOW… 6’9″!! How tall are you?

Reply

I’ve been obsessed with grapes lately. So crisp and juicy…mmmmm. Thankfully, they’ve been on sale a lot lately so I can easily feed my obsession, literally. Bahaha

Reply

They really are the best things ever. Have you had them frozen lately? Hope you keep finding some good deals for them!

Reply

That I have not! It’s never even crossed my mind before. I’ll do it right now. Thanks for the idea!

Reply

I’m pretty sure that is the best idea ever with the treadmill.
We sleep on a queen size bed but buy king sized comforters so we can have tons of blanket to snuggle up in since we are both blanket hogs :)

I am really into hummus with wheat thins lately!

Brooke is ADORABLE and you look GREAT!!

Reply

That is a great idea and we might copy you… Billy always steals the covers so that would be perfect!! YUMMMMMM I want to try your hummus and wheat thin combo right this second.

Reply

Great place for your treadmill! I would not want to part with mine either. Is Brooke sleeping in a crib next to your bed? We have a king size bed and I love it, no way I could go back now. I have three little boys (5,3, 15months) and I either work out early in the morning (like 4:30 am) on my treadmill at home or sometimes at the gym. If I don’t have to work or its summer (I’m a teacher) somedays I will take them to the gym with me and they play in the playcare while I am working out. Our YMCA has the best playcare and the boys beg to go there anyway so it works out well.:)

You look amazing and Brooke is beautiful!

Reply

Janae you look great…so beautiful!! looks like you’re adjusting perfectly to being a mom:) such a blessing! Yum…super chunk pb?!? I will have to try that:)

Reply

What I wouldn’t do for a king sized bed – sometimes our queen sized bed is too small when I decide to sleep like a starfish.

It only rains here in Silicon Valley a few months out of the year and maybe only a handful of times have I seen it get out of control and drench our balcony…so I think the treadmill will be able to weather the storms :)

Reply

I have a hard time getting ready before noon and my kidsvare no longer babies. Lol. Go you!

The best time for me to get a work out in, is before they wake up. But I could only start working out then when they started sleeping through the night.

I am obsessed with peaches right now. They are juicy and delicious.

Reply

aww Janae- you two are so gorgeous.. love Brooke’s headband! Love the idea for the treadmill spot- seems like a must for a mom with a new baby.

I’ve been loving apples lately too- just had one dipped in peter pan PB.. yum!

Hope you find somewhere good for lunch :)

First of all congrats on your new addition to your family. What a blessing. She is so precious. : )

I am new to your blog and love it! Right now my husband and I sleep on a Queen but we sure could use a huge King since all 3 of my kids love to crawl into bed in the mornings, kicking my husband out. Kinda sad.

Lately I’ve been craving Chipotle’s rice bowls. They are so good. : )

Since it’s summer and all 3 of my rug rats are home with me I’ll pop in a movie in another room or have them play outside so I can get a workout in the mornings. But if I can’t then I’ll go on a run in the evening after my husband gets home. That’s usually my favorite time. Just me, my music, and the pavement. : )

Reply

I could eat a burger salad from The Counter every day! of course a side of fries is a must too:)

Reply

I think having your treadmill on your porch is a great idea! It’s as close to running outside as you can get and hopefully you can get a nice breeze out there. I hope that works out well for you.

If I could go to lunch anywhere in my town right now, I’d probably go to the new thai place that just opened up. I hear their food is great and I love me some masaman curry.

Reply

We currently sleep on a full but I want to upgrade to a King. I would go to Jake’s Pizza if I could. Seriously, some of the best. Or Stuft (right near USC campus) or Mountain Mike’s. lol.

Reply

I meant SCU. Bah. This day is messing with my brain.

Reply

We sleep on a queen size bed. I would go to lunch at Boccardi’s. It’s an Italian place that has some amazing spinach ravioli, sounds so good right now. I work out while the kids nap or after my husband gets home. Sometimes my husband and kids come running with me. The kids ride in the jogging stroller and then we take them to a playground afterwards to reward them for sitting in the stroller. I’m into oatmeal right now. I made some peanut butter granola earlier, yummy and easy! And peanut butter, I’m always up for peanut butter.

Reply

I would be scared to put my treadmill outside, but I guess CA is different. I am heading down to my Mom’s in Colorado tonight and they just opened a Cafe Rio near her house, so I am hoping that she wants to meet me there for dinner. I had lunch with my BF at Pita Pit. I hardly ever eat out, never mind twice in 1 day!

Reply

I am lOVING “Jazz” apples right now…yum!

King bed

Run or workout by 4 or 4:30a.m (yes, running in the dark! ;0)

Brooke is so cute!!

Reply

We sleep on a queen bed. We are both quite tall, but we slept on a double for a long time.not comfortable. I would go to Chipotle right now, but it’s almost supper time here. All workouts happen before 7am or they don’t happen at all. I need to at least be out the door before the kids wake up or I won’t make it. On the weekends I have more flexibility, but even then, the earlier the better. Most days I am up at 5:30 to get a run in. And now I am so sad that it is starting to be dark that early:( It’s so much easier to get up when it’s light out.

Reply

Oh, and I am eating so many peaches that I might tun into one. They’ve been great on the east coast this year. In fact, I am having some with supper!

Reply

King bed. We have tried every other size. I have space issues.
Sweet Tomatoes. All you can eat salad. And little fudge brownies. Mmmm Brownies.
Food: any fruit.

LOVE the outside treadmill…just hope the porch is covered cuz we get a whole lotta rain up in here!!!! LOVE me my NorCal winters!

Reply

It is covered wahoo:) hope you are having a great day!

When I don’t run behind a stroller with both my kids (double BOB rocks!) I run on my treadmill in the living room. Usually when my youngest takes a nap and I set up my oldest with a craft/snack or he will sometimes exercise with me and run around the living room or jump on his trampoline….great fun! My treadmill is in our living room. Yes it looks ugly, and yes my husband would much, MUCH rather have a couch there, but hey, he knows it keeps me sane if I can squeeze in a run while watching the kid(s).

Reply

p.s. I work from home early in the am, otherwise I would run then, while the kids still sleep …. or, you know, SLEEP. :)

Reply

Yay for finally having a bed again and more importantly, having the treadmill back! There were so many times I was able to run while the kids would nap.You seriously look amazing!

Reply

When I had little babies I would work out in the morning before my husband would have to leave for work. Either that or after the babies early morning but not wake up morning feeding. I use to do step aerobics in the living room. I also walked. I didn’t start running until I was in my 40’s.
King size!
Popcorn is killing me right now! And with the salt – I’m a bloated hot mess!

Reply

I’ve been running early in the morning whilst my husband watches our little boy but as it gets darker in the morning, i’ve realised we’re going to become stroller runners for the autumn and winter ;) Yeah, as someone else said, check the treadmill is safe from water. Northern Cali winters are wetter than the UK, and this is Brit saying that!!!

We’re considering getting a treadmill but want one of those lightweight ones that fold up as we don’t have much space either!

Reply

A queen bed! I think a king would be too big for just us two :)
Subway… haha, weird I know but I have a craving!
I am totally addicted to almond butter right now.

Reply

I’m always very against treadmills and told myself that having a baby would make getting one essential. Run during naptime? Heck yes! I hope your downstairs neighbors don’t mind the noise!

Reply

I LOVE why you have a treadmill outside. # 3 made me laugh…OUT loud. Haha.

I am into simple protein pancakes right now, spinach protein smoothies, and almond butter. mmmmm.

I’d go to Jason’s Deli at any moment any day. SO good.

Where did ya’all end up going?!?!

Reply

5:30am work out time while kids are sleeping and before work. If it doesn’t happen then, it doesn’t happen.

Thanks for the shout out to New Mexico, I live in Albuquerque! :)

i know you must have heard “how is it possible you look THAT good after just having a baby!!???!!???” so i wont state the very obvious. :-)

Love your blog! i was just at a barnes and noble reading Women’s Running magazine and saw you in it! how cool is that!? congrats on the new baby! wishing you much happiness always!

Reply

Very smart to not run alone at night :) I once went running at 5 AM to beat the morning heat. It might as well have been midnight. It was spooky. Things got really weird when a couple of drunk dudes started following me in their car. But I think I set a PR :)

Reply

That’s actually a REALLY good idea to have your treadmill and watch Brooke! I don’t know why but I never thought of that ….HAHA. Good luck!

Reply

I sleep on a queen, me and my cat. I think since she likes to hog the bed I should really upgrade to a King :)

Panera’s Bread!!! They make bomb salads (and really big ones!) and sandwiches!! Since your finally living in Cali, you should go check one out!!!

Does Gummy candy count?? Hmmm….banana smoothie(milkshake) :)

Reply

LOVE Brookes headband! Geez she is so adorable!

Is your deck on the first floor or second?? I’m in a similar situation and I am considering putting our treadmill (when I get it in a couple months :) on our balcony. We are on the 3rd floor though and I am nervous about falling through! Yikes.

I spent $4 on 4 peaches today, waaaayy too expensive, but when I got home and finally had one I decided $30 on peaches may be happening later :) I could keep eating them nonstop!!!

Reply

I would have your deck checked! When I was home I saw the today show and they had a segment on decks falling in and showed how you should get your deck checked every year!

Reply

Putting your treadmill on the deck is BRILLIANT!! Now you can enjoy being outside without having to worry about snakes or bears or creepers! You are even smarter than I thought :) Oh, that little Brooke is just so cute. I don’t know if you remember me telling you that having my 1st baby was the happiest time in my life. Enjoy every second of your time with her…they grow up waaaay too fast!

Reply

We sleep in a queen sized bed although I’d love to move us up to a king. Also, I just bought Kara Goucher’s book, just because of you!!!!

Reply

Yay, a bed! We sleep in a king size bed.

With my kids, I head to the gym to use their childcare. I would rather run outside, but the gym is more practical. Or I could wake up really early, but I love to sleep. I do early on Saturdays to meet a group, but that’s it!

Reply

We have a queen, but I’m pretty sure we need a king to have an awesome marriage. That should just be in the handbook or something.

PS – Brooke looks exactly like billy right now!!!

Reply

King, which is good since the girls love to be in there snuggling, watching TV, reading books, perfect size for all 4 of us. I would go to Sweet Tomatoes/Souplantation! My favorite place to go eat :) Haven’t been in forever…now I want to go right now. I prefer to exercise first thing in the morning and 75% of the time that works out, but there are times I have to do it after they go to bed, my kiddos don’t nap anymore. My day is ALWAYS better when I get it in before the rest of the house is awake.

Reply

As a mom of 2 year old twins I have learned to embrace early morning workouts. However, when they were really little it was during naps or after they went down for the night. I really didn’t work out hard till almost 3 months post birth.

Reply

Salad the size of NM, and apple slices into PB……your pre-pregnancy food likes are back…….broccoli yet??

I am into nectarines right now.

I really could post this comment everyday……” you look fantastic, and Brooke is adorable.”

Reply

Lately I’ve been obsessed with the unsweetened organic applesauce from Trader Joe’s. I may or may not go through a jar a week by myself… :)

Reply

We have a queen but want a king. :) I’m loving raspberries hardcore lately. I’m wanting a treadmill now! You’re lucky! :) have a great night!

Aww, her little headband is so cute!

We have a queen sized bed!

Lunch at Ruby Tuesday sounds amazing right now…I love their huge, fresh salad bar!

Food I’ve been into lately: Rice Krispie Treats cereal!

We got a king 4 yrs ago when I was prego w/child #5. My big splurge for the occasion, and I LOVE it.

I have to get up early & run at 5.

Reply

We’ve been on a king bed for the past 5 years and I will never go back to a smaller bed.
I didn’t start working out until my youngest was 3 and I just took him to the kids club at the gym, which he loved.
I have way too many restaurants by me but I’m craving Durkin’s, a way cool local pizza place.

Reply

Aww Brooke is so tiny! Cute little feet!

Reply

I just did a run outside this morning for the first time all month and it felt AMAZING! I too have been relying on the mill for early morning runs but when the weather is this perfect, I can’t justify NOT getting my butt out the door.

PS- Brooke is simply beautiful. I don’t think I’ve fully congratulated you yet on such an amazing accomplishment! :)

Reply

I’ve been into apples lately too. In fact, I think I might have eaten 3 or 4 today! We always seem to be synched up as far as food cravings go. ;)

Reply

May I just say that you and I have the same taste in peanut butter. Skippy Super Crunch is the best!!! :) Once I was checking out at the grocery store and the woman behind the register said, “$7.50 for a jar of peanut butter?!” Of course, I got the largest one they had, but I was thinking, “This is a staple for me…I know how much it costs. Stay away from my PB!” ;)

PS–Brooke is adorable and I think your treadmill on the balcony idea is very clever!

I got my treadmill after my son was born and it was my saving grace! My hubby went back to his 90 hour/week job 2 days after my son’s birth so the treadmill was the only way I could run until my son was old enough to go in the running stroller. (I think the recommendation is 6 weeks but we waited 3 months…I wanted to make sure it was a safe and fun experience for him! It worked – he loved going on long runs with me!). Anyway, I ran during his naps or, when he was older, after he went to bed at 7 p.m.

Will the porch safely hold the weight of the treadmill plus the force of your foot strike? I just want you to be safe (and I don’t even know you!) But it is a great place for a TM. It will pour a lot in the winter and you will be out there in winter running gear but as long as you hang a tarp along the side of the porch it will feel awesome to be outside but protected. I used to ride my bike on the porch of my apartment.

Anyway, my fave lunch is Chipotle (fave dinner too!) And we don’t eat fruit…can’t afford it right now. But I love grapes!

Reply

I sleep on a queen size bed and now I’m used to throwing my legs about and take up the whole thing (my friend told me when we shared a bed).
My friends who have little kids were not really able to work out much until a couple months in when they could walk around in the mall with their babies or go outside (and be less fussy).

Reply

Questionnnnnnn…do you have to lube your treadmill belt often?! I always feel bad using my moms (can someone convince my husband to buy me one?!) because I put more miles on it than her and I swear the ‘lube belt’ warning never leaves the screen!!!

I love peaches right now!!!!

Reply

I wake up at 5 and take the 5:45 am Spin class at my gym.. home by 7 before the hubs and kids are even up.. then he’s off to work and somewhere in the day I leave the 13 yo in charge and go for a quick run..

Reply

Oh my gosh! Ive fallen behind majorly on my blog reading, clearly! Because you have a baby! Congratulations!!! She is beautiful.

Reply

Food obsession? Well, if it wasn’t as pricey as it is, roasted wasabi seaweed. It’s like $1 a package and for me, that’s one sitting. So, I don’t know, that’s teh same cost as eating half a bag of chips. But I freaking love it. It’s probably not a normal thing to love though (they have it at TJ’s also, in case you are crazy enough to try it).

Reply

i hope your tarp is good and thick, but i totally understand the outside idea. I have an exercise bike i keep on my back (covered/screened in) porch. I think it’s great – much more enjoyable to be outside even if i’m not actually going anywhere. And for me it was a noise-thing too. Doesn’t sound as near as loud outside as it does inside where no one else can hear anything if i’m pedalling. Get ya a baby monitor and you won’t hafta worry about rolling any cribs around — i guess a bassinet wouldn’t be too hard to move but cribs can be heavy! ;-) I’ve had my treadmill diff places in the house/garage and would just use a baby monitor to tell if the baby was screaming. Exercising during naptime was definitely the way to go when my kids were younger.

Reply

Food I am really into lately is red grapes and spaghetti with marinara sauce. I can’t get enough! Although I had an amazing salad today that came with tomatoes, egg, pecans, cheese and ranch dressing that I find I need to have again :)

When my baby was young I worked out when my husband came home but now that he’s 2 and naps for a couple hrs in the afternoon I work out then and go running at night.

Love the idea about running on a treadmill outside! I’d just be worried about rain….

Reply

Janae, you look insanely gorgeous with your dark hair! Motherhood looks good on you too :-)

I am in love with salads with avocados lately. I really don’t know why…

Working out with a baby has been a challenge for me at times. I try to do a strength training workout when my little boy is napping. But, I always go out for my run after he is asleep for the night, around 7 or 8 because some mornings I am just too exhausted from a sleepless night. I need consistency or I get all messed up!

Reply

I’m really kind of into Nutella and avocados lately. Not necessarily together. Put either one in a sandwich and odds are you just made my day.

Reply

oh my goshhh that headband on Brooke is adorable!! and you look so happy:) i love it. i sleep on a queen bed in my apt (luckily it is furnished), but at my parent’s house, i have a full bed. i could fall asleep on a log though, so it doesn’t really matter where/what i sleep on haha!

Reply

Oh man, when my boys were young I got on my treadmill whenever I could when they would nap. It was like a game to see how many miles I could actually do before they woke up or started fussing. LOL.
You look great lady!
And.. my treadmill was outside for a good length of time and it really liked it. You’re will be fine. :)
Hope you’re sleeping on your new bed!!!

Reply

I love how positive you are! If my (future) baby woke up that many times I’d be a mess the next morning.

We have a king size bed. Probably the best thing we’ve ever spent our money on!

Reply

Woohoo! A bed!! We have a queen, but Mike is convinced we need a king because the dog sleeps on the bed with us most nights.

Reply

We sleep on a queen size bed. My husband likes to say it doesn’t matter what size the bed is because I take up half of his space and none of mine anyway haha Cannot get enough of hummus lately. I have been buying 3 flavors a week and I am the only one that likes it!

Reply

Wow you guys are a beautiful little family. I can’t believe how well you are taking everything in stride. Seriously, amazing.
My hubby and I have a king size bed so he doesn’t accidentally punch me in my sleep. Not joking, it is a problem when we sleep in smaller beds:)
I would go for a Moe’s taco salad. Mmm.
Food obsession: vanilla almond butter from Whole foods. It is pretty pricey but so good!

Reply

Yum apples – can’t wait to go apple picking in the fall!

Ok and yes PLEASE make sure the deck is sturdy enough for you to run on a treadmill on it!!

Reply

Are you sure you had a baby a week ago!??! ALL of your ‘baby weight’ is gone! I can’t even tell you were JUST pregnant. Girl, you are amazing! & an even more AMAZING Mom!
I LOVE Brooke’s headband!! & those tiny toes…they are the BEST!

Reply

I’m into apples right now, too. I love pink lady apples!!

Reply

My kids are older (13 and 10.5), but right now, I get up at 4:30 a.m. to get my run in. I can get it done in an hour, and that gives me time to shower, eat breakfast, talk with my husband, and load the dishwasher before I have to wake them up. I’ve also run late at night after they’re in bed (when they were younger and needed me more).

Reply

you look so great! i love all the headbands on Brooke!!

Reply

LOVE the fact that you’ll be running outside on your treadmill!! :) haha… for some reason the picture of billy tying the bed to the top of the car with twine made me bust out a fit of laughter! lol… we live in a full size bed… neither of us are very short… I’m 5’9″ and he’s about 6’1″ and we’re just as wide as we are tall… not happy campers but you gotta do what you gotta do! ;) We are definitely getting a king size bed as soon as we get our own place! :)

Reply

We have a queen size bed…we love it. I’m short and my hubby is about 5’10”, so we really don’t need more than that. The food I’m into lately would be my garden cucumbers dipped in hummus! OH MY! I put away an entire cucumber by myself yesterday, and I’m going for another one for lunch today…I also cut up a garden bell pepper and tomato to go with the hummus today….YUM!
