4 things that made the day perfect

In case you were wondering what I did with myself yesterday afternoon after my glorious nap:

Photo

1. We extended the 4th of July another day and enjoyed jello cups by Charlie’s kiddie pool.

2. Billy and I worked on our teamwork and future parenting skills by playing Mario on his computer (you can tell it is his computer because there are no finger prints, food stains or dents in it like mine) for a few hours.

Photo 1

The veins in my hands are quite creepy if I do say so myself.

3.  Somehow we ended up in the cookie aisle of the grocery store with Billy’s dad even after what happened the other night.

Photo 2

4.  The best part of all was finally seeing Pam and Rocky again.  They are incredible people and we are so grateful for their friendship. I don’t know what I did before Pam.   She just started training for Chicago and I can’t wait to see what she does especially after her latest 3:21 at the San Diego Marathon. She is so speedy!

We met up with them at a beautiful restaurant that overlooked the Orange City for some amazing food.  This restaurant has their thinking caps on because they are smart enough to include a huge soup and salad bar with every meal along with cheesy toast.

Did you really think I would order anything besides steak and a baked potato?  If you answered, ‘yes, I thought you would get a sandwich’ I will still love you because that would have been my second choice.

Last run here in California.  Garmin is charged, iPod is by the door and the lake is calling my name.

Who else is training for the Chicago marathon?!?!

What was the last treat/dessert that you ate?

What salad dressing have you been loving lately?

-ITALIAN!!

Do you run EVERY run with your Garmin or GPS?

-If I am not on the treadmill then yes, every run.  I am hooked.

Me Me Me :) I’m training for Chicago! First marathon!

I have INSANELY veiny hands and feet too – a little freakish. Believe it or not, my kids had jello for the first time yesterday and they hated it. horrible. they are missing out on a big part of childhood. No Chicago for me, but can’t wait for NYCM!!
I used to run every run with the garmin, now I try to only use it a couple times a week. It makes my training more pleasant and less stressful.
Sounds like you had such a great time in CA!!

I’m training for the Chicago! My FIRST marathon (cue screams of excitement and nerves here)!!!!!!

And, I’m with you– every run, if not on the treadmill, has some sort of Garmin or other tracking system. None of this “running naked” nonsense!

Travel safely as you leave CA!

Yaaaaaaaaayyyyy Meagan!! :-) And all others too!!

~No bake oatmeal pb cookie
~Brianna’s vinaigrette, creamy or regular
~Been window shopping for a Garmin, but until then it’s just me, my watch and Google maps…lol!

Enjoy your last day in CA! Safe travels :)

That’s so funny you mentioned Mario- my colleague at work has the Super Mario tune as his ringtone and I am thinking of ordering a Nintendo haha! I’m out for dinner and I see dessert in my future..and a lot of it!

Reply

Hahah! My computer has SO many food sttains and finger prints ALL over it. It is kind of gross. I think it is time for a cleaning! Love that you were playing Mario though!

I made a batch of brownies and have been eating SO many of them!

I’m training for Chicago too…but kind of not. I went to the doctor last week and have a very inflamed IT band and she told me I need to take some time off now so it won’t get worse later. I know Billy has had some IT band stuff flare up and have been meaning to ask you if you have any tips on recovery! I am trying to not get discouraged but it was a serious bump in the road!

I do loves me some dessert, funny really because I’ve always been a give-me-another-plate-instead-of-dessert kind of person. Had a cookie cake slice yesterday! My fav dressing right now is Trader Joe’s Light Champagne Vinagrette. Well, that and a good ole’ Cider Vinegar and oil. And I agree with Meagan above…none of this running naked business! I don’t own a Garmin (yet) so I rely on apps that I’ve downloaded to my phone or Ipod touch. I wish you, Billy, and Baby Runner Girl have a safe trip back to Utah!!

Reply

Yep, training for Chicago…my first marathon! Yay! No Garmin though. I use MapMyRun on my phone, but I don’t check it until after. I’ve been hitting my training paces fairly well without a Garmin, but I’m thinking about getting a Garmin soon, though. Any recommendations on a model?

My current favorite salad dressing is papaya mango poppyseed. So good!

I’m training for Chicago!!!!

I had the best Screamer on the weekend with banana slush and vanilla soft serve. To die for.
I made a dressing I was quite proud of – blended basil, strawberries, olive oil and lemon juice – so yummy!
I used to always run with my Garmin but rarely now that I am not training.

I’m training for Chicago too! It’s my first marathon and I’m gonna have my first 40+ mile week this week which feels great having just come off a few injuries. Knowing when to back off training seems to be an ongoing struggle, I’m taking my rest days VERY seriously now. I was training with my Garmin a lot when I was working on improving my 5K and 10 mile race pace but now I’m trying to just relax into a good rhythm for my first marathon to get my mind used to the longer distance so I’m running with only my tunes. I’m sure as the race approaches, I’ll be using the Garmin more. I’m all about fruits and anything frozen this month (smoothies, yogurt, ice cream) so no dressing for me! My all time favorite smoothie is the peanut butter/banana smoothie with whey protein at our local Tropical Smoothie Cafe.

My computer is so icky! That’s what I get for trying to cook and type at the same time :)
Have you played the original mario on Wii? Its so much fun! We bought it to play with our four year old and its great to play as a family :)

Yum on the dinner. I just got my GPS watch (Timex) last week and so far – haven’t been out without it :). I’d imagine that when I use the treadmill I will not be using it.

I can’t believe how time is flying for your pregnancy. It is SO EXCITING!!

I heart Pam, looks like you guys had a wonderful time! What a beautiful view!!

I don’t run every run with my Garmin, but I try to! Some days I am just not feeling staring at my watch the entire run. It’s nice to have those ‘zen’ runs every once in a while :-)

Reply

Please tell me that you guys didn’t already run out of cookies!!

(But I think I might love you even more if you tell me that’s what happened! ;) )

Last night my family took me to fro yo to celebrate my BQ!

No Chicago for me but, NYC this year. Can’t wait!

I am garmin dependent. I don’t leave home without it!

Last “treat” was last night…I had a mug of cinnamon toast crunch followed by a mug of cocoa puffs. Not the best idea, but it was delicious!
I would LOVE to run Chicago…I’ve heard it’s an awesome marathon!
Happy Friday!!!!!!!!!

those jello cups look like serious perfection..yummy!

I’m training for Chicago, which you know already :) I’m already kicking my butt for it already though, why did I think training for my first marathon in this summer heat would be a good idea? ;)

I had PB and cheesecake froyo last night, sooooo good!

ranch is usually my #1 love but i’ve been lovin on the balsamic vinegarette this summer.

im the same as you garmin-wise, if im on the treadmill no, but outside definitely! I cant believe it took me so long to finally run with one, but now I cant imagine how I did without it, i love seeing my pace and mileage!

Reply

I am obsessed with Goddess dressing. I could drink that stuff straight from the bottle!

Reply

yesyesyes! chicago marathon will be my very first!!

What a gorgeous view! The food looks delicious! I am the same way…if I am on the tmill I don’t weat my Garmin but every other run I do…it’s like a weird version of a security blanket, lol. Enjoy your last day in Cali (for now!). :)

Okay, this is so crazy because I have been in RSM Orange County for the last 3 weeks for yoga teacher training and have not been able to read blogs regularly.. I can’t believe I missed your visit here! It looks like you guys had such a blast! I have been able to squeeze in some pretty amazing runs while I’ve been here too though – the weather is beyond perfect every single day!

Reply

The last dessert I had were some peanut butter cookies (using only 3 ingredients!) that I made for our 4th of July cookout.

I’ve been using my Nike+ app on my iphone to track my runs lately rather than my Garmin. My arms feel weighed down when I wear both my ipod and the garmin.

Reply

Sounds like you have having a FABULOUS time on your trip! Love reading about it! Have a FAB Friday!

Reply

I’m from Chicago and although I’m not running it (this year ;) ) I can’t wait to watch it! Also, I have insanely veiny hands and I actually love it. Not sure why but I do…

Reply

Yeah, I do tend to run every run with my iPhone and Nike+….it’s new, I’m a bit addicted to the data when I get back. But I know it’s not good for me. I’m starting to obsess about whether or not I run with it for my next half marathon or whether i stick to my very basic watch. Hmmm.

Those jello desserts look fantastic. I am constantly amazed at what you manage to put away and still say so slim. I know you exercise loads and you’re pregnant but I’m in awe of your eating capacities…and deeply jealous ;)

Reply

Maple Grove Farms Sugar-Free Raspberry Vinaigrette! 2 tablespoons = 5 calories and it is absolutely amazing. :)

Reply

Ahhhh ENJOY that last run in Cali. I bet the weather is perfect there for that :)

Reply

Haha playing Mario is so fun!
And for running, I always run (or hike) with my Garmin.

Reply

Fourth of July was filled with sugary treats! I definitely indulged in some delicious seven layer bars, butterscotch chips are quickly becoming a new obsession of mine!

Reply

The Chicago marathon is usually the same day or within a week of the Portland one so I don’t know that I’ll ever run it. But I would sure like to! I just realized that I didn’t have a dessert or treat last night after dinner. My niece was over though so I was distracted because we were coloring pretty seriously. My favorite salad dressing lately is Annie’s Goddess. It’s soooo good! I just got the Nike Plus GPS for my birthday last Sunday and I have been using it for every run since. I can’t believe I’ve waited this long to have a running watch!

Reply

I met a girl training for the Chicago Marathon when I was running the other day. I’m not, though.

I don’t always run with a GPS watch. Mine broke for a while so I was wearing a stopwatch. I was pretty awesome. I do like to know my distance and time, though, so I wear it whenever I can.

My last treat was Chocolate Chip Cookie and Caramel Peanut Butter Bars and holy cow were they amazing.

Reply

Last dessert/treat I had was froyo on the Fourth of July!

Salad dressing lately is a mixture of equal parts poppy seed and champagne dressing. Try it!

I don’t have a Garmin or GPS. Maybe someday. Right now I just track everything on DailyMile.

Reply

okay, that’s it. i need to get my hands on a jello cup by the end of today. darn it, Janae, why must you do this to me every time?! :)

MORE cookies?! that is amazing.

jillian michaels is calling my name!!
xo

Reply

you must be in running heaven in Cali – I heard its one of the best states to run in :) Uber jealous!!
Love the Jell-O cups – so patriotic!

Reply

I am hooked on italian as well. Except, of course, when it’s time for dessert. Last night I had leftovers from the honey apple upside down cake I made for the fourth. Delish!

I have been getting better about not worrying about the gps and just enjoying my run. It’s good stuff.

Reply

I have very veiny hands too, so you’re not alone! The last dessert I had was a homemade brownie from my mom. Always a winner. :)

Reply

Looks like a great dinner with friends! That steak looks v. small though, or is it just me being used to large and in charge steaks, haha.

Reply

Those jello cups are too cute!

Last treat was a huge cup of froyo with a bunch of toppings.

I’ve been loving honey mustard as salad dressing! Sweet and tangy!

Reply

Chicago will be my first!!!! I am so nervous, but so so so much more excited!
My last dessert were the triple chocolate ghiradelli brownies I made last night. As if that wasn’t enough chocolate, I like to add in white chocolate chips :)

I love my garmin but sometimes I run without it because I get crazy!

Have a great weekend Janae

Reply

I’m glad I’m not the only one with creepy vein hands! It gets even worse if I just worked out or if I’m hot–then my forearms get all Hulk-like too…

We really enjoyed your company last night! :) Soo excited, happy for you & Billy. Your baby girl is lucky to have such wonderful people as her parents!! :)

luv ya sweetie!! :) xo

Who else is training for the Chicago marathon?!?!
— Not Chicago, Richmond. FIRST MARATHON…AACK. That’s a scared/excited ack.

What was the last treat/dessert that you ate?
— I am typing this with a bowl of M&Ms next to me.

What salad dressing have you been loving lately?

— Honey mustard. But I’m still searching for that dressing love.

Do you run EVERY run with your Garmin or GPS?

— Yes. I will cut runs short if my Garmin dies. True story.

Speaking of marathon training, I just came off of a 50 mile week (yay!) which is a little more than normal, but I’ve done it before. I’ve been STARVING. Is this normal, or psychological? Like I said, I’ve run those kinds of weeks before, and I’m only increasing from ~40 mile weeks, but it just feels drastically different in the hunger department.

Reply

HEY YOU!! I definitely do the same thing when I increase my mileage and I really do think that you probably are more physically hungry! You burned more calories this week than you are used to. It is easiest to reach for the simple carbs but those won’t help you with your hunger that much so make sure to be eating protein, complex carbs and FATS:) CONGRATS on the 50 mile week wahoo!

Reply

Janae, when you run first thing in the morning do you eat anything before your run?

Reply

Hey Brittney! Yes, usually I eat a banana or a slice of toast. Something really simple and easy to digest. I make sure to refuel right after my run:)

Reply

I’m eating ice cream right now and loving it! haha
No Chicago Marathon for me this year… I’ll be thinking good thoughts for Pam!
I love those patriotic jello sundaes you made! yummm :)

Reply

I am training for the Chicago marathon – it will be my first full 26.2! I am overwhelmed with my training plan though because it has been 100+ degrees here for about 2 weeks straight now and I am dying!!

Reply

Those jello cups look pretty amazing and I’m sitting here wishing I had one right about now. I’m on this pecan sandie cookies kick right now. Brings me back to my childhood, you know, a simpler time.

And Mario is something everyone should play when they’re preparing for parenthood…or because you want to go back to a simpler time. Either one works.

Reply

I love Greek dressing right now, I’ve gone through almost a whole bottle in not time at all. I ran for a few months without any technology of any kind because I was too cheap to buy anything. Then my husband bought me a watch and I feel naked running without it! I love being able to see my time through out races and being able to know how long I’ve been out and not just guess!

Reply

I played Mario with my husband last night too. A couple that plays Mario together, stays together!

Reply

YAY I’m training for Chicago Marathon too! #6
I love how Billy and his Dad take buying cookies so seriously! :-)

Reply

I’M TRAINING FOR THE CHICAGO MARATHON!!!! Can you tell I’m excited?! Let’s see how excited I am once I start hitting PDRs…

Reply

Training for CM12 to accompany the hubby this year! It should be a good time and since marathons aren’t my strength, it’ll be great to focus on him and pushing him through the race instead of thinking about how much I hate the distance. Hopefully it’ll be a good time.

That jello dessert looks really good right now, is it just jello and cool whip?

Reply

I did not know you knew Pam! I must have missed that part of your Vegas recap. Pam is one of the sweetest virtual running friends I know on Daily Mile- so encouraging to everyone! Looks like you all had a great time together. Just read saw a pic of you two on FB. I can’t believe you are still getting in 40 miles a week. Awesome!! :-)

Reply

My new favorite dressing, well actually veggie dip is Otria Greek Yogurt Veggie Dip (spinach artichoke flavor). It has all the taste of a creamy ranch dressing with far fewer calories.

Reply

I just finished a sno cone yum!
My favorite dressings are definitely either salsa, balsamic, or hummus!!!

The last dessert I made/ate was…

I’m looking forward to watching, instead of running, Chicago this year! Hooray!

Reply

Those Jello cups are SCREAMING my name!! I love it! And when Im outside I always have something to tell me how far I have gone. I need to know just to be able to keep track of my fitness.

Reply

strange question-but do you know if there’s any side effects of beta alanine on birth control? I contacted my pharmacist and she said there wasn’t enough research about it. i thought you or someone may know! :)

Reply

I was planning on doing Chicago this year, but had to say no due to finances :( I am training for Marine Corps Marathon though!

Today I have been inhaling candy from the Friday candy bowl at work. No beuno.

I actually don’t eat salad dressing. I know… weird.

I don’t run every run with my garmin. Sometimes I go completely without, and other times I don’t look at it at all while I run but want to track the distance in my little computer thing.

Reply

So glad you got to connect with Pam and Rocky–love them! I’m sure they were hoping you’d end up in SoCal but Santa Clara won’t be too bad! ;) Beautiful pic of the 4 of you btw!

Cooper has a baby pool too and I think he and Charlie would be great pals!

Reply

Garmin runner… YES! Can’t leave without out! I use to be obsessed with Poppyseed Dressing, but lately I’ve gone the “fatty” route and can’t get enough of Honey Mustard Dressing!!

Reply

OMG you know Pam?? She is speedy! I didn’t know she was training for Chicago…I think everyone should move here. :)

Reply

I really need to invest in a Garmin/GPS watch of some sort. I don’t usually run with anything, but my husband has the Nike+ SportWatch and really likes it. I would like to be able to keep track of runs and splits, and I think it would help me work on maintaining a faster pace.

I used to roll with ranch dressing, but over the past year I’ve either opted for balsamic vinaigrette, or recently just olive oil and lemon juice. It’s lighter and more refreshing in the summer heat.

I would love to run Chicago some day–when I was in college we used to help out in the medical tent, which was a crazy experience!

Reply

I am buying a Garmin/GPS this week. Any suggestions?

Reply

HEY YOU!!! Okay, we are obsessed with our Garmins! I have the 305 and it is a little cheaper but does everything I want and need. Billy’s is a little more and he uses the 610, it is a touch screen. You can’t go wrong with either one! Here are the links:
