Winter running clothes and Brooke got me real good.

I’ve been trying out the Seattle Tights and Seattle Shell these days.  I’m a big believer that quality winter running gear makes the BIGGEST difference in your running/attitude/experience when the temps drop.  I like to get just a few key pieces each winter that I know will keep me extremely warm and just wash them a bunch rather than getting a lot of cheap/not great quality pieces for my winter running.  I do a lot of treadmill running in the winter but also a lot of outdoor running too and it gets COLD here so I am pretty picky about what tights/coats I will use but I am loving these ones so far.

These tights are my first pair of WATERPROOF tights!

IMG 1130

You can see that they are waterproof on the areas that don’t need flexibility which is AWESOME when it comes to staying warm when running in bad conditions.   The tights are super easy to move in and breathable which surprised me because of the waterproof material used.  Other favorite parts of the pants—>  a very thick and flat waistband with a drawcord (and two pockets… one of them waterproof) and the chafe-free seams (aka ridiculously comfortable).  These will be worn on the majority of my outdoor runs this winter.

IMG 1142

The jacket is their most technical jacket and it is windproof (hallelujah) and waterproof while at the same time also being very flexible and breathable.  I love the way it fits (it gives some shape) while doing what I need it to do—>  keep me warm and dry. There are plenty of pockets and vents and the hood can also be packed into the collar.  I love the little pocket inside of the side pocket for your phone with the hole for your headphones with anchors to keep your cords in place.  Added bonus is that it works as a running coat and also as a coat that I can wear all around town.

STAY WARM this winter.  You will like running a whole lot more if you aren’t freezing over the next few months.

I am always beyond thrilled when Josse and I have matching schedules and we can meet up for a run.  There is just something about getting to talk with one of your bfs while at the same time running.

It’s our day with Brookie’s friend so we hit up the kangaroo zoo for them to bounce around for a few hours.

IMG 1155

I got my second workout in with the piggy back rides up the slide.  My quads will burn.

IMG 1171

I was more afraid of going down than Brooke.

IMG 1173

I had a sweet potato and turkey burger for lunch and then snacked on these while they played… project turn as orange as I can (add in spray tanning too) is going really well.

IMG 1177

Before I freak you out… that is a fake spider in the below picture.  Brooke put it there and when the lights are off it legitimately looks like a monster spider.  I actually screamed and my heart stopped when I went into the bathroom this morning and found it.

Brooke, you got me good.  Just FYI when you are a teenager… I will be getting you back.

Just a few more hours to get your Donut tanks or t-shirts!!!!

Seven miles today!

Treadmills are my last resort. I much prefer running outside, even if the weather conditions mean I run a little more slowly.

I’ve got five miles planned for after work tonight! It’s beautiful outside, so it should be a nice run! I run on the treadmill alot, but if it isn’t crazy windy and we don’t have a ton of snow (I want to see where I’m stepping) then I’ll run outside.

Afternoon snack today was an orange. It was good!

I need those jackets and tights to stay warm and dry while running in the Seattle rain! In winter I only stick to the treadmill if it’s icy or the windchill is below 10 degrees, which was most of mid December through February where I used to live, but now I run outside all of winter with just a few treadmill runs.
4 easy miles this morning with my dog! Thursdays are my super easy days.

LOVE those running clothes! I might have to try this brand. I definitely have to layer up in the mornings during the winter. We don’t get too much snow or ice around here, so I can avoid the treadmill. But I HATE the cold! :/

I did 6 easy this morning and have a difficult tempo tomorrow. So, naturally I’ve been snacking on gummy bears to get me ready. :)

We started carrying the Seattle tights at work. I haven’t tried them on because Brookes tights never fit me well. They always seem to fall down. I really want a nice warm pair of tights though so I feel like I might have too.

The jacket is my favorite color and you rock it!
3 miles done for me today! Woo breaking past that 2 mile wall I have had for almost two years now

Winter activities for my family: bowling, bounce house, Just Dance on the Wii, family workouts in the basement, and ice skating. This year my husband is going to try and build a small ice rink in our back yard! (We’ll see how that goes.)

I’ve stuck exclusively to the treadmill during long winters in WI, but I’m going to try and change my ways this year. I agree that you must have the right gear to make it bearable.

I did 2.6 quick miles before work this morning just to break a sweat!

Snacking on corn English muffins with sunbutter (life changing)

Did 4 miles today!

I love the treadmill

We stay inside as much as possible when it’s cold. Even when running.

Sounds strange, but I snacked on nacho cheese cashews from Whole Foods. They are delicious! I am hitting up the eliptical and pool after work. It’s a running rest day for me! I love the treadmill and use it most often in the winter. But, sometimes I just need to get some cold air in those lungs!

Reply

I made chocolate chip cookies and have been eating way too many of them today! But for breakfast I had the most amazing bagel – Pumpkin Spice w/honey pecan cream cheese. They weren’t together at the store, but they should have been!

7 miles today. It’s 82 right now, I have zero excuses when it’s comes to running in the “winter” in So Cal! I really look forward to running outside when it drops below 45 and a bonus day is anything below 35 because I feel so brave running outside in those temps ;)

Post race so no run this week. I’m giving myself a much needed break!!! I love the cold and running in it! With my kids we are on a good indoor playground, library, indoor pool rotation.

Reply

7 miles today on the treadmill! Had a speed workout so it made the time pass much quicker!

Reply

Oh man I was thinking about the turkey trot and how I want warm tights for it just this morning!! (Because I was running and per usual my butt got so cold. My literal butt. Every other part of me was pretty toasty. Why just the butt always?? I mean, there’s definitely enough insulation back there.)

I am on the hunt for some good winter running clothes as I moved to Minneapolis a few months ago and about to start marathon training in January (eek!) Definitely some treadmill runs but I like to do the long runs outside. I run funky on the treadmill and twist my knee and ick, no bueno.

Reply

Those pants sound incredible! It definitely gets cold in New Hampshire, and if I want to run outside as long as possible I make sure to get really warm pants too. I haven’t made the leap to get waterproof ones though.
I did 3 miles today, with each being 45 seconds faster than the prior. It was super windy but felt so good!

Reply

Those tights look awesome! I just did 6.2 in the rain/puddles and could have used some waterproofing. but $165? WAYYY to rich for my blood.

Reply

I need some winter thermal running tights, that is my goal this weekend is to find some. No snacking for me today because I was at work but dried fruit is probably my go-to snack.

I just got done with a 1/2 hour run around some sidewalks as it was getting dark. I should have brought my gloves because I currently cannot feel my fingers to type, haha. I am determined to run as much outside as possible this winter! Treadmill will be last resort or for high mile days if the temps are too low.

Reply

If Boston has a winter like last, I’ll stick to the treadmill! Otherwise I love running outdoors- I feel very adventurous being outside with few fellow runners! Thank you for your winter clothing recs- I have to check them out!! Happy running!

Reply

Haha, I like that you said you run a lot of the treadmill and that you run a lot outside. Sooooo basically you run a lot?

Love your attitude, Janae! You are a sweetie AND a badasss runner. Hard to do both :)

Reply

3.5 today on the dreadmill lol. Raining here. Love the tights. I would so much rather run outside. I’m so much slower on the treadmill, but yet it feels hard. Weird. Tomorrow I plan to b outside!!!

Reply

Yes, waterproof pants! Like.best.ever.yep.yep.

Brook seems like a pretty brilliant kid if you considering how young she is and the fact that she already pulled a monumental scream worthy prank. I have the feeling there will be an accumulation of payback over the next several years ;)

I’m kinda dreading treadmill running since it has been so lovely to run in the cool fall weather. Le sigh.

Love that jacket!

In my dreams I think I ran about 3 and they felt fantastic, but in reality I’ve gone from the kitchen table to the couch. This pregnant momma can’t wait to run again after!

Pizza, mostly. Lots of pizza, and two handfuls of chocolate chips.

I’m babysitting my two nieces tomorrow night!! So looking forward to that, haven’t seen them since August.

Reply

Lately I have been snacking on cereal. Is that weird? A handful here, a handful there….

Today I got in a 4.5 mile run with a friend. The weather was pretty crummy, but as soon as we started it was really nice. Amazing how miles can pass quickly when chatting with a friend.

In the winter I am all about running outside. I put a few screws in my shoes, dress warm, and out the door I go. So peaceful!

I am obsessed with that edamame/craisin/seed mix from Costco. It is too addicting and I cannot get enough of it.

I really wish I could run outside all throughout winter but alas, I live in Canada and sometimes you can’t run through 6 feet of snow and -40 degree windchills. I stick to the indoor track, though–anything but the treadmill.

Only 3 miles today. I wish I could have done more but it hurt so much just to make it as far as I did. I’m pretty sure it isn’t an injury (I hope not) but I think my foot hurts so much because I wore a new pair of boots all day on Monday and I’ve been limping ever since. This was my first run since Monday and I was still crying out in pain at some parts. I haven’t worn the boots since then so I don’t know why the pain is taking so long to go away :/

LOVE the JACKET!!! Looks AWESOME! Love the color too!

My week day runs are usually always on the treadmill because I have to run at 3:30-3:45ish before getting the hussle and bussle morning routine going. Here in South georgia, the winters are perfect for running outside, but at the hour of the day I go, I can’t run in the dark! I am a BIG chicken!!! So, I always look forward to the weekends when I get to run later in the morning and run outside!!!!!!!

Reply

Those sound like awesome tights, but WHOA are they expensive! :( I definitely need to find myself something similar though cause I know the winter is going to hit us in force soon!

Reply

I LOVE those sweet potato chips!!!! I ran 5 miles this morning :)

Reply

No running today, I did physique 57. It’s definitely a burner and helps keeps me injury free.

I love Krave jerky, today I had chipotle beef as a snack. It helps me get protein and iron in.

Reply

I snacked on some super delicious/weird sugar cookie cracker jacks today.

Normally I hit the treadmill from time to time, but it’s currently buried at the back of our garage, so I’ll be all outside, all the time this winter.

No miles for me today, just some yoga.

Reply

Treadmill for the winter is a must on the weekdays after work, but I try to get out as much as I can on the weekend for the long runs. Love the name of those Brooks tights!

Reply

I’ll run outside in anything as long as I don’t have to get on the treadmill and I definitely rely on the right gear to be able to do that! I ran 6 miles and went to Yoga for Athletes and it was such a great day!

Reply

9.1 mile run today.

I live in Oregon so my biggest problem is wet toes! Even if it isn’t raining the ground is so wet that I have wet feet by the end of my run. Anyone have any shoe recommendations that will keep my feet dry? I would really appreciate it!

Reply

Hi Jessica –

try using waterproofing spray. I would get it from an outdoor type store, made specifically for your shoe material. Hope this helps!

Trainers with a Goretex upper.

6 miles treadmill style, (there was 60 mph winds here in ND). I have been known to consume a few too many sweet potatoes and have subsequently been accused of abusing fake tanning spray…gotta love those sweet spuds!

Reply

I don’t care for running in tights, but luckily in Tampa, I don’t have to worry about that too much. These tights actually do look pretty nice!

I would have freaked out if I saw that (fake) spider!

Reply

I ran 7.5 miles yesterday, and 7.5 miles today. Both were runs into the office, which is a bit dull, but a great use of time (only takes 15 minutes longer than taking public transport!).

I just ordered some Little Hotties hand warmers (40 pairs!) as it’s set to get colder in London tomorrow. It’s been really mild so far, but that is coming to an end. I’d asked you what gloves you use to keep your hands warm as I always struggle. Your reviews of winter clothing are a great help! I look forward to hearing how the tights and jacket fare out in the wild :)

My daughter is a year old and loves the water. So we go swimming quite a bit at our local Y. BTW, I am totally jealous of your winter running gear. You look fab!

Reply

I ran 3 miles this morning!

I don’t have kids, but there are a lot of crafting and baking that happens with my boyfriend’s nieces. Also indoor water parks, snow tubing and snowboarding are always fun!

Reply

You’re right, having the right gear in winter makes all the difference. I’ve even thought about getting those snow spikes for running shoes. Anyone ever use them? Sweet potato chips are also my favorite.

Reply

In the winter I run outside as much as I can stand it! I will take it indoors if it is below 20 degrees or really icy.

No running for me today- doing a short 4-5 miles tomorrow morning:)

Reply

Have you tried the sweet potato or pumpkin tortilla chips from Trader Joe’s? Love those!

I was hoping to get in an easy few miles this morning but I think I may have a broken toe … :( … Stupid non-running related accident last night and my toe is KILLING this morning and crazy bruised. Getting an x-ray shortly and hopefully it’s just a minor jam that goes away in a couple days!

Reply

I need those tights in my life. I double up on my running tights bc my legs don’t warm up as quick as I would like.
I love outdoor running. Especially in winter :). The pathways are always quiet.
I’ve been taking my kids to indoor play centres as well as the mall, open gym time at fitness centres and the library. It’s gonna be a long winter lol.

Reply

I once woke up in the middle of the night to find a scorpio in the middle of my kitchen. No joke!!! Be thankful it was only a spider and a fake one at that!

Reply

Last winter I ran outside until it became too icy outside to run outside. For the most part I’ll probably stick to treadmill this winter for timing reasons.

I’ve been staring at that jacket in the Brooks catalog for days, I want it!

Reply

I run outside during the winter unless it is too icy. And speaking of winter running gear, I have a pair of five-year-old Target brand running tights that keep me nice and toasty and dry–they repel water and are warm without being too thick. I never would have thought they’d be my go-to cold-weather running tights, especially for five years of constant use (I also wear them as every-day leggings, so they get worn and washed a LOT), but they are still going strong! Best $30 I’ve ever spent : ) I’ve been snacking on Boy Scout caramel chocolate-drizzled popcorn–that stuff is like crack!!!

Reply

I love that jacket! I’m so glad you did a winter gear review, I’ve got to start stocking up before the weather changes in St. George. I have been snacking on this pretzel pub mix from Costco-I only like the little sesame crackers, but I think I’ve found every single one in the container. Happy running!

Reply

I have been all about these trail mix from Target – walnuts, pepitas, cranberries. I want it ALL.

No matter the weather, love winter running. After the first mile, it’s invigorating. And I tell myself that every passing car is like, “Man, she’s TOUGH.”

Headed out now for 7 miles with my friend Keith – his accountability is the best!
