The Night Before She Leaves and My Fall Clothing Staples.

Brooke spends a weekend each month with her dad.  She loves her time with her dad and I miss her terribly while she is away.  We kind of have a tradition of going to her favorite arcade the night before she leaves and over the years I am sure the activity will change but doing something special before she leaves will stick.

Like mother, like daughter—>  we can’t eat ice cream without getting it in our hair.

IMG 9030

I had a flashback to teaching driver’s ed as she was driving this game (I can’t tell you how many times my life flashed before my eyes as a 15 year old was driving me around town…).

IMG 9010

Afterwards we walked around Chalk the Block.

IMG 9037

There was also a mini concert going on and this girl was incredible.  I could have listened to her for hours.

IMG 9039

Just chilaxin on the curb eating KIND bars while listening to music.

We met up with some friends later on and sweet potato fries called my name.  I ate some vegetables and chicken when I got home.

IMG 9048

I don’t remember what I was saying after dinner but I got Brooke laughing so hard that her head kept going back as she was giggling uncontrollable= a successful joke.

What the rest of the week looks like running wise.  Not going to lie—>  a 14 miler sounds a lot more manageable after the last few weeks of 19+ mile runs.

Turns out that my coach is sending me a quote each day which is pretty perfect for my mental game leading up tot he marathon.

In other news… I am not failing at Minesweeper.  I know you all want to be updated with my high score.  5.48 seconds.  Is it a talent or do I just need to find a new hobby?

I think that Fall clothing is my absolute favorite.  Maybe it is because Fall is the perfect season for running and so all that goodness seeps over into every aspect of life, including clothing.  I have had a few readers email/ask about some different things I’ve been wearing and what my fall staples are so here you go.  Nothing to do with running but I couldn’t sleep last night so this is what I was doing at midnight:

Shoes:

-My favorite booties——>  my favorite open-toed black booties, these babies, and I have my eyes on these ones.

T-shirts that are great for layering:

J-crew v-necks are my absolute faovites

These Madewell ones ($18) come in a close second—>  the color options they have this fall are the best.

Flannels/sweaters:

-I was wearing this red and blue one yesterday!

-My favorite one in the history of all flannels—>  Here.

Chunky cardigan (I don’t have this exact one but a very similar one and it is like wearing a blanket all day long).

This lightweight sweater from JCrew.  A little pricier than what I like to spend on sweaters ($60) but it is one of those sweaters that I will be able to wear for years and years and the fabric just feels like heaven.

-My other favorite lightweight sweater from Old Navy.

Jeans:

-I wear these ones a few times a week—>  love the worn look and the relaxed fit.

-The matchstick jeans have been my favorites for a long time but I branched out at JCrew and just got these ones and I love them even more (the length and stretch won me over).

Pull-on legging jeans(black and ridiculously comfortable)!

Dresses:

-I’ve shared this one before but I just got it in black and it is my current favorite dress.  The gold zipper runs from the very top to the bottom of the dress and the material is super flattering.

This striped shift dress from gap (both the blue and red are adorable and it is probably 40% off today because Gap is always having a 40% off sale).

Old Navy’s Jersey Cocoon Dress for the days that I want to just wear something loose and ridiculously comfortable.

The blue flower one that I’ve worn a lot lately!  Love to wear this loose black dress from her site too.

Jackets:

-I’ve had this one for a few years and use it all of the time.

Tan faux leather jacket (in the mail and I am sure I won’t take it off for a few weeks).

I am SO ready for fall! I have my boots and sweaters on standby!

I have a half marathon on Sunday, we’re going to Costco (whoop whoop!), and sleeping in tomorrow!

Fall is definitely my favorite!! The weather is perfect for running and I love sweaters, boots and scarves!

I love fall. I actually really love winter too but fall is my favorite. The cool weather, the clothes, the smells, the changing colors. It’s the best.

I’ve got 15 on tap this weekend, which like you, after weeks of doing 18 and 20 milers, seems like a short run!

I have nothing specific planned for the weekend – which is just how I like it!

No really long run this weekend–racing a 10k tomorrow. Eeek!!

I LOVE summer, but I must admit that fall is a pretty great season. I love the feel of the crisp air, pumpkins everywhere and just feeling a relaxing peace all around.

Happy Friday!! :)

22 miles this weekend! Build week!
Fave season: it’s whatever season I’m in. I think I just love the changes!
3 things: long run, time with my husband (we’ve been apart all week) and fall decorating at our house!!!?

Reply

I have my first long run for my half marathon training this weekend! It feels good to be slowly building mileage back up again! I used to be a summer lover, but now I think I have turned into loving fall a lot more. Perfect running weather, all things pumpkin, boots, cider mills, it all is just so fun!

Reply

Fall is my favorite season and I am so ready for sweater weather!! I love Old Navy cardigans. They feel almost as good as JCrew ones to me but are much more affordable on a grad school budget. You know once I get a real job I’ll be making the step up to JCrew though!

Reply

I have a race this weekend (just a 5k) so I’m doing that on Saturday, then a shorter long run of 8 miles. I’m excited because this is a trail race with a ropes course at the finish line. Should be interesting!

Summer is my favorite season, but I love fall fashion the best. Thanks for all the suggestions..time to spend my paycheck :)

Reply

I think I might do a long run today. I work all weekend so today is the best day to squeeze one in. Oh I heard your podcast and loved it! It was great and you were so humble and down to earth. I swear it’s like I knew you or something! Haha.

Reply

Fall is my favorite season! I love the boots, sweaters, jeans, and colors.

That’s so sweet that you plan a special night before she leaves. My parents are divorced and something like that would have made being apart from my Mom a little easier for sure!

I absolutely love your fall clothing staples – pretty much matches my fall wardrobe! I love fall!

This weekend we are heading up to DC for a wedding and seeing friends and family!

Reply

Do you still have a good relationship with her dad?

Reply

Brooke sounds exactly like me. Whenever I eat, I get things absolutely everywhere LOL. I’m such a mess sometimes! I love the fall weather for layering and hanging out. I think it’s absolutely perfect weather!

Reply

I am building up to 16 miles tomorrow! I did 15 last weekend, so not a huge increase but it will be my longest run since November!
I definitely like fall, but I am having a hard time letting go of summer this year- I think its mostly because I am dreading winter!

Reply

Fall is by far my favorite!! Although here in Florida it doesn’t hit until November and lasts through March – just a little bit longer :)

Reply

Love your blog and following your training! Can you do a post about training logs? I noticed the cool calendar graphic of your training in this post. Would love to hear your insight on fav ways to log training! :)

Reply

ABSOLUTELY!! That is such a great post idea! The calendar above comes from Training Peaks. My coach inputs all of my workouts there and then I comment back with how it went etc. Hope you are having a fabulous day!

Reply

Love the quote!

Got a 22-miler on the books this weekend and then the taper begins! PRAYING for good weather and not another torrential downpour. I’ve ran 20+ milers in pouring rain 3 times this year already … Over it!

Three things going on this weekend:
-Finally buying new running shoes!
-22 miler
-Friend’s wedding!

Happy Friday!

Reply

I have my first ever half marathon on Sunday!! So excited :)

Reply

AHHHHH GOOD LUCK AMY!! You will do great. Trust your training:) Let me know how it goes!

Reply

Those are Cubby’s sweet potato fries! Right?? I might be obsessed with that place. Also sweet potato fries. Maybe we need to do lunch there soon?

Fall is the BEST and you ladies are the cutest! Love you both! Xoxoxo

Reply

Love fall, always have and always will! Halloween, fall weather running, fall races, my son’s birthday, the start of hockey season and oh, the chocolate covered caramel apples :)

Reply

I just really love summer. But fall is a close second. I really hate winter and I like spring. But summer! So many fun things in the summer and I never have to carry around jackets or anything like that. The evening walks are perfect. There’s lots of playing outside. It’s just wonderful.

Reply

Fall is my favorite!!!

Coming off a minor procedure, so I am hoping to run again this weekend after about 10 days off. My goal is just a few miles. Next weekend is a big one- 17 miles!

Reply

Janae – hope you are okay with me being your twinner because I just clicked on every single link and might buy it all! <3

Reply

Oh that would make me so so happy. You know how I feel about matching people:) Hope you have a fabulous weekend Kristine!

Reply

Fall is my favorite! I broke out my black suede wedge booties yesterday :)))

Reply

So, I haven’t played Minesweeper in ages, but in college, my best time on Expert was 78 seconds.

(But I am MUCH slower on the phone– I never got into it on my phone like I did on my computer back in the day!)

Reply

78 seconds on EXPERT… I need your autograph.

Reply

I suck at Minesweeper. I am really excited to get some new fall clothes. I say it every day but Brooke is as cute as cute can get.
This weekend I start a fall trail running group, bake a lot, and enjoy and extra weekend day with Zachary.
hope you have a great weekend

Only 6 or 7 miles this weekend. I’m taking the week off from a running schedule to rest up for half marathon training which starts Monday!

Reply

Good call!!! Good luck with half marathon training. Love the start of a new training cycle!

Reply

Oooooh I love that you linked up some clothes in this post. I feel like such an underdog when it comes to anything related to fashion. I NEED HELP.

Reply

20 miles tomorrow morning! Eep! Long runs are getting longer and the marathon is getting closer. Fall is definitely my favorite season. I love the weather, wearing sweaters, sitting by a bonfire, and watching football. Life is good <3

Reply

My favorite season is summer because of the warm weather and long days. There is ALWAYS something to do during the summer! Fall is a close second. I look forward to all of the holidays and festivities.

Three things going on this weekend → spending time with my baby boy (he is two weeks old today), football, and hopefully a long walk with the family.

Reply

It is a big race weekend here in Ottawa with the Canada Army Run – I’m racing the 5K. My first race since June! Should be fun!!

Reply

Ohhh, I have a tan faux leather jacket that I’ve been wearing for years!! It goes with everything! :)

I’m still recovering from my marathon, so only short runs this weekend. Can’t wait to start doing long runs again – I’ve been biking everywhere to get out all of my excess energy!

Even though I love fall, spring is my favorite season with everything blooming after winter. It also reminds me of high school track!

Quote of the day: “Sometimes the people around you won’t understand your journey. They don’t need to, it’s not for them.”

Reply

I do love that quote!

Reply

Okay, that quote was just what I needed. Love it. Thank you sweet girl and keep on recovering:)

Reply

I love fall! Too bad Fall in Florida is barely a season. :-(
My staple is a comfortable and versatile grey sweater.

Reply

I love fall! What isn’t to love about the clothes, beautiful colors, cooler temps (love running in fall), fall inspired meals and all things pumpkin? :-)
I am running long tomorrow just for the fun of it so we will see how far I go. I have a favorite route around the river.
You’ve got some great pieces there for fall! I have my eye on your favorite flannel. So cute!
Three things- shopping with a friend, going out with a big group of friends to celebrate my birthday and relaxing Sunday!
I hope you have a great weekend!

Reply

I happen to love fall clothing the best as well! Great choices, J. And I hope you stay busy while Brooke is away! Happy Friday! :)

Reply

I’ve got a 14 mile taper run tomorrow. Twinsies! I’m hoping it feels like a cakewalk after last week’s 22 miles + a 10K race. I also took the taper a little too seriously this week and didn’t get any weekday miles in.

I’m SO looking forward to fall. Summer in Oregon has been insanely hot this year and I’m ready for some cooler weather and football and crunchy leaves.

Besides running this weekend, I’ve got a soccer game to go to, and a Seahawks game to watch. ALL THE SPORTS.

Reply

Those braids are so adorable! Fav season – love them all. Three things – kids sports, date night and running!

Reply

I love fall! And I love fall fashion … Such great fashion inspiration from you today :)

Reply

Girl, you are bad for my shopping habits! I love fall and fall clothing. I desperately need a new pair of boots this season, and clothes in general. I love this time of year so much.

Also I have those Gap jeans on right this minute and I wear them at least 3 times a week, realistically, probably more. I’m obsessed. I also love fall running clothes. Brooks has some amazing leggings this season and I’m desperate to get all of them!

Reply

fall clothes are so cute and comfy, i’m with you there! although i hate to say good-bye to shorts and flip flops. sigh. my summer heart will always be waiting for next June. i’m trying to get a 20-miler under me tomorrow morning — praying that happens without too much dying!

Reply

Oh gosh, now I am going to have to go shopping this weekend. This weekend I am going to do whatever I feel like…maybe explore some river trails in my area? Right now fall is my favorite season (sweaters, changing leaves, apple cider/pumpkin everything) but come March my answer would probably be spring!

Reply

20 miles tomorrow!! My first one of that distance this year. 7 weeks until my marathon.

“Comparison is the thief of joy.” My favorite quote because it applies to absolutely everything in life, including comparing my 51 year old self to my 31 year old self!

3 plans for the weekend: pizza tonight (always before a long run,) 20 miles tomorrow, fly to Hawaii on Sunday!

Reply

I need to have a baby girl like right now so I can start dressing her like Brooke. Girl has so much styyylllee!

Reply

-No long runs planned, I’m taking it easy with a groin strain (OUCH!)
-I love Spring and Fall. :)
-3 Things: work, work ,and work.

Reply

No run for me as my achilles has flared up again. I will be switching off between sending it love and giving it dirty looks.

And love Fall for the apples, fall colors + trail runs, and cozy hoodies. And apples, did I mention apples?

And good luck with your “short” long run – 14 is a great distance!

Reply

Fall is by far my favorite season. You’re not completely bundled up so you can wear awesome clothing AND have everyone see it when you’re outside but you also aren’t sweating like crazy in it! Perfect! :)

I think that quote your coach sent you might be my new favorite!!

Reply

Brooke + her little boots = absolutely adorable
Also, LOVE the quote your coach sent you today!

Reply

Your love for The Gap, Old Navy, and chocolate covered cinnamon gummy bears makes my heart smile – and now I have purchase new fall clothes that I will have to hide when they arrive :)

I am in Denver for work this weekend, and in love with this city! I had such an enjoyable run, and looking forward to training runs here the rest of the weekend!!

Reply

I have to ask, what are Brooke’s boots? I have a 4 year old who needs them!

P.S. I’m from Iowa but visited St. George, UT for the first time last week and of course thought of you!

Reply

Hey Miranda!! They are from Old Navy! They aren’t currently online but I got mine in the store this last week. Oh I am so happy you went to st. George. Isn’t that place gorgeous?

Reply

I think it’s great that you have this tradition of doing one of Brooke’s favorite things before she goes away! My favorite season is spring because we’re finally leaving the cold, horrible winter behind and everything is new and fresh.

Reply

I really love summer because I love the hot weather and water. But there are things about fall that I also enjoy, like boots, hats and pumpkin everything :) glad you and Brooke can enjoy something special before she leaves.

Reply

I’ve got 20 miles to run on Sunday. Last long run before I head into my taper – first full marathon on Oct 11th!

I love fall! I love the weather, the clothes, the food, and smell of the leaves…I could go on!

Quote of the day: “Never regret anything in life – at one time it was exactly what you wanted.”

This weekend I’ll be watching football, running and trying to catch up on some sleep.

Reply

Building! Got 17 on tap for tomorrow. Yikes! But I’m meeting at 5am with a group of friends to getterdone so hopefully that will mask the pain. lol.

Fall is my favorite season. My birthday is in October and my favorite temps are 60s and i LOVE fall foliage. It is one of the reasons I have yet to move away from the North East.

Nothing is permanent. If you make the wrong decision you can always make another decision which could be the right decision or another wrong decision but you always have the opportunity to make another choice. Unless it’s paying taxes. LOL.

Other than my long run I plan on cleaning out my garage and doing a few hours of freelance work. Hopefully enough to afford me enough cash to buy a new Garmin before the NYC Marathon. Apparently my Garmin 100 only has 5 hours of battery life and i’m probably gonna finish in 5:15-5:30.

Reply

No run for me this weekend. Still healing from a dang stress fracture. I’m hopeful I’ll be able to get in a few fall runs though, fall running is my favorite!!

My three things are: BodyPump, planning a baby shower and cuddling with the hubby

Oh btw, I LOVED your podcast on runners connect. I was so excited to listen to it! Made my Wednesday!

Reply

I’m running my FIRST FULL MARATHON on Sunday!!! (I hope I survive!!!) Wish me luck!!
My fave season is Fall OF COURSE because: PUMPKIN!!!
My quote to live by is “When you’ve reached the end of you’re rope, tie a knot and hang on!! How true, huh?!
My three things this weekend will be Gu, G2 and a well deserved ice bath after!!
:)

Summer is my favorite season so I’m kind bummed that it’s starting to cool down. I was born in Australia so summer must live somewhere in my genes. It must be hard to let her go, she seems like such a sweetie. Prayers to get you through the next few days! <3

You have a nice wardrobe! I feel like as a stay at home mom all I wear is yoga pants and tshirts

Re: the young girl singing with her guitar…I LOVE seeing random performances like that!

I think my very favorite quote is…
‘ I love my body, it’s the only one I will ever have’ .

Reply

That’s a good quote I really like it! :)

Reply

Spring is my favorite because it leads into warmer weather. I don’t love fall because it leads to winter (which I DREAD running in).

“You can do hard things” has really been my mantra lately and I love it! :)

I’m running Addicts II Athletes 10k for my final run before my first marathon! :S Then a friends baby shower, and dinner with family.

Hey, Hungry Runner Girl! Would you mind going over the supplements/vitamins you use again? Thanks so much!

I love Brooke in her little denim jacket! So cute!!

Three things going on this weekend:
13 miles. Check!
Catch up on some reading.
Straighten up around the house.

Reply

my favorite season is spring because the days get longer and it is still not too hot! Fall is a close second. Unfortunately I just moved to permanent summer, so I will just have to see your seasons and live vicariously through you! Good to see that you are training well and fast ;)

Reply

Hummm, I think I am going to say I love winter! My reason: We don’t get true fall weather here until almost winter. Plus I love going up to the mountains for cross country skiing. We love doing that as a family + roaring fires, hot cocoa and snuggling. My kids love the snow, and it’s probably because we don’t live in it! :)

Reply

I’ve got a half marathon on tap for tomorrow. Hopefully the weather is nice I’m hoping for a pr! I love fall the clothes are fabulous, thanksgiving food, and 5 birthdays!

Reply

I love fall clothes too – so cozy!
