Since we last talked:

It feels like it has been so long since we last talked.  That’s what happens when it has been over a day since that last time I filled you in on the latest around here!

Let’s first talk about the mile repeats that almost ate me alive.  I didn’t make the best life decision—>  I had about 3.8 hours of sleep the night before a speed workout.  Learn from my mistakes because I don’t want you guys to experience the pain that I experienced yesterday.  Luckily, I took a real nice nap later on in the afternoon while Brookers napped.  That saved me.

We did a nice little warm-up followed by 5 mile repeats.  In between each mile repeat we jogged for .25 miles and then took a minute or two to grab a drink etc.   10.3 miles total.

My splits for the mile repeats were—>  6:17, 6:15, 6:14, 6:15 & 6:10.  I was determined to get negative splits and finish strong even though I felt pretty awful.

I think the biggest key for mile repeats is just to take each mile repeat one at a time.  Whenever I focus on the one I am in I tend to speed up but as soon as I start thinking I have x amount more to do I notice that my body slows down.  Also, my favorite (I tell you this one a lot)…  When your legs get tired, pump your arms harder to keep your legs going and to help you to focus on something other than how tired you are.

It was an insanely gorgeous day.  I had a long sleeve shirt on under my vest but after the second mile repeat I had to take it off because I felt so hot.  All of you stuck in ridiculous amounts of snow, you just need to come stay with us until the end of winter.

The runner’s high after a tough speed workout is the best.   Maybe I was also just super happy afterwards because I was just thankful to have survived the above workout.

IMG 5434

Brooke has been loving closing her eyes really tightly and then saying, “I can’t see you!!!!!!”

IMG 5412

In my world, birthday week always equals going out to eat a lot.

Lunch yesterday was at Kneaders and they added more toppings than they ever have before to my turkey, bacon and avocado salad.  More toppings than lettuce is always a good ratio.

IMG 5438

I got to hang out with a dog that is a big sweetheart and loves to have paw massages.  He just sits there and puts his paw up for you to massage for as long as he can get you to do it.

IMG 5408

I had an asphalt pie from Wingers a few nights ago.  This thing is ridiculous.

IMG 5406

Last night the girls took me out for a bday celebration.

IMG 5457

Froyo and salads, did you expect anything different.  It’s just what we do.   Wild Zucchini always brings out a plate of gummy bears for kids when you eat there.  I always end up eating 98% of them.

I’ll do some light cross training today. After two days of tough workouts, its time for a day to relax a bit!

That’s a smart dog! That’s like putting your foot in someone’s lap and letting them massage away for as long as possible. I’d do that too (if someone was willing to give me a foot rub that often!)

As long as they aren’t valentines conversation hearts, I say yay. The conversation hearts sorta taste like Tums with cute sayings on them.

Easy run this morning for me. Can’t believe you did that sort of workout after so little sleep. I don’t have that in me anymore! Get some rest!

Reply

Awwww that doggie getting a paw massage is so cute!

Way to go on those mile repeats!!!! Daaaang! That’s some mental toughness to go for neg. splits even when you’re not feeling great!

Reply

I turned 46! yesterday ~ had lunch at Granite City and if you go there on your birthday they give you a wonderful cooked cookie and ice cream….I can’t explain it but its wonderful!!

Reply

My legs were still tired from my 20 miler this weekend so I also, sort of, kind of, completely died on my mile repeats. Glad to know we were dying together ;).

I love candy. And I love hearts. But I hate candy hearts.

Last place to eat = Olive Garden! Any place that delivers free, unlimited buckets of salad to my table is my version of heaven.

I have had a cold (and cough) for seriously three week so its messing with my running and training! I’m trying to take it easy so I get better but nothing seems to be helping :(

I had 5 miles on tbe plan today….

No plans for Valentine’s Day but I do love candy hearts!!!

Reply

All of these pictures make me so happy and so jealous at the same time (especially your running one!) I wish it was that wonderful here. SO impressed by your workout, you are seriously so inspiring.

This morning I did a 7 mile tempo run, but I think I’m coming down with a cold and it was much slower than it usually is. Hey, it’s the effort that counts, right? That’s what I have to keep telling myself this morning.

Hope you’re having a fab birthday week! When’s the actual big day? I hope it’s the best year yet for you! So glad I discovered your blog :) It’s a good way to start the day for me.

Last place I went out to eat …. Taco Bell! Keeping it classy :)

Reply

Running! I need to get on the bike and in the pool for triathlon season, but I’m really enjoying the running, so I’m sticking with that for now.

Last place I went to eat out… we got a takeout pizza for supper last night from a local place called Jake’s. Does that count?

Yes to Valentine’s hearts! Wait, do you mean the cinnamon ones or the conversation hearts? Either way, yes.

Reply

Easy run this morning on the treadmill because we got even more snow! I would love to live in Utah or somewhere warmer right now.
Last place I went to eat was at a local coffee shop/cafe. Turkey bacon avocado sandwich on pretzel bread is the most genius sandwich.
That dog is too sweet! I love dogs.

Reply

I know for me I do not run well if I haven’t gotten enough sleep. It’s something I have to do if I’m having a workout or race. I think I’m a lot more prone to injury that way. I’m really impressed you hammered through those repeats on that little or sleep.

Reply

My dog does the same exact thing! Then when you let go of his paw he lifts up the other one so you can massage that one too. :-P

Reply

Candy hearts…love them :)

Reply

I just finished a 6 mile tempo run that felt insanely good! No candy hearts but I got wonka fun dip yesterday and I may have eaten it all last night…oops. Happy birthday eve.

Reply

Today I have repeats, only 400’s so not as hard as your miles but I will still try to push hard!
Yellow candy hearts are great all the other colors can go away.
My daughter used to close her eyes and try to get away with stuff like eating a cookie when she wasn’t supposed to and such. It was the “I can’t see you means you can’t see me” game!

Reply

Paw massages! How sweet! I wish my cat would let me do that to him! Haha

Reply

That ice cream, yes! Last place I went out to eat was froyo- is that the best thing you’ve heard or saddest? Haha

Reply

My workout today is a three mile run and some yoga!

Reply

I ran easy miles with a friend this morning, which was nice, because I usually run solo.

My sister and I ate at Potbelly over the weekend. Love their sandwiches! Plus, they have some of the best cookies ever.

I like the candy hearts, but I really only like the pink and white ones. The green ones taste ok, too, but I can’t handle the yellow, orange and purple ones. They are gross!!

Reply

Brooke’s shirt though! It’s so cute!
Have a happy birthday week and Valentine’s week!
Candy hearts – sure.
Last went out to eat – subway.

Reply

You’re insane Janae, those splits are amazing. I would have been glad to be alive haha.

Candy hearts? Totally yes:)

Reply

Workout today was bootcamp. I’m still waiting on results from my MRI to determine whether I can run. Eek! Hopefully I’ll know tomorrow!

I spent 5 days in TX with the besties and that means we ate at Freebirds x2! I love that place, it’s kind of like Chipotle but 10 x’s better!

Reply

That workout sounds really tough! I think the most mile repeats I ever did was 3. And not sure I could do any speedwork on 3 hours of sleep!

Reply

Today was a circuit training focusing on strength training legs and a few laps in the pool. I can’t believe you got through that run with so little sleep. Hope you can get some rest.

Reply

Awe yay :) greatt job on that crazy run.!

What’s been going on for meee. I finally ran after my groin injury. so I’m soo happy.
Candy hearts are a yay, my daughter loves them.

HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!

Miss you and Brookers. That pic of her closing her eyes is ADORABLE!!! :) :)

Reply

I’ve been working and studying hard – full time work and law school are no joke!

Glad you guys have been having such great weather – I’m ready for all this ice to go away!

Reply

My week has been all work…can’t wait for the weekend. I have a speed workout today-1200m and 800m repeats- not as hard as mile repeats, but I end up doing half of them uphill, which is hard! Then I’m off the the gym for weights…

I tried the Copper Common with friends the other day, and it was great! That dog is adorable!

Reply

Today is an off day for me too, although my speedwork was way less intense yesterday than yours was!

I am not a fan of candy hearts. Actually, I can’t think of a “Valentines Candy” that I like. Other than chocolate, of course.

I’ve already bought 3 bags of jelly beans and will probably buy a million more between now and Easter!

Reply

I ran five easy recovery miles this morning + abs. I’ll probably end up doing a few more miles with the pup this evening after work! All your birthday celebrations look so fun! And that asphalt pie thing looks amaaazing.

Reply

Ah! I had a mile repeat workout this week as well and there is NOTHING fun about them. I always feel as if I have truly survived something afterwards. Boston – here we come!

Reply

the fact that that view is what you run to and wake up to everyday makes me jealous, in the best way possible. i love the mountains, and dream of moving somewhere by mountains someday.

i’m going for sushi for lunch with the mister.

as always, brooke is beautiful, just like her momma :)

Reply

8 miles outside this morning which is a big deal since it is rare I can run outdoors these days! I got run in before it started snowing this morning too…Last place I ate out – Maoz Vegetarian – my favorite salad bar! The toppings are awesome and load up really high.

Reply

mile repeats are so tough. froyo is definitely a must afterwards.

Reply

you. are. so. fast.
were you always?

mile repeats = awesome

Reply

I ran 8 miles with our Breakfast Club and of course had breakfast after!
Last restaurant: Bricktops
Heart candy: pass

Reply

British food is pretty awful, but these folks REALLY know how to make AH-MAZING Indian food. We order from the local place at least once each month– usually on a Thursday since the girls don’t get home until nearly dinner time from school. Hope your Birthday week is great. Mr J has a birthday next Thurs and we are going skiing in Switzerland for it. Well, he is– I don’t ski!

Reply

Well, I usually run every day but I am so run down that I think I may have a nap while Callum sleeps today. My body is just like: STOP, Suzy. Go to sleep.

Reply

“When your legs get tired, pump your arms harder.” I’ll definitely remember this one! How long were your rests in between each mile?

Reply

Thursdays are track practice…tonight’s workout is:
3 sets of 5 X 300M, jog 100m
All at 5K effort, 3 minutes between sets

Ew. LOL.

NAY to Valentine candy hearts – if there isn’t chocolate involved, I’m not interested!

Reply

I haven’t been able to work out for two days because (my apartment flooded so…) I had to pack my entire apartment into my bathroom so that they can tear out the floors and carpet…. I really miss working-out. And I am currently teaching with two hours of sleep last night. I will be buying myself some nice workout attire for Valentine’s Day.

I am okay with candy hearts. I think the white ones taste the best.

Reply

I am in the middle of a taper, and I’m going CRAAAAZY. Today’s workout is supposed to be “3 miles, slow.” Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh! I sort of fell like that’s not even worth getting dressed for, haha.

Reply

LOOOOVE the candy hearts! And that pie is screaming my name right now!

My run today is going to be a slow and easy one to just enjoy the weather! :) Maybe just 3 or 4 miles depending on time!

I’m jealous, a spin class sounds so fun! I’m in the middle of buying a house right now, so I’d held off on joining a gym until we knew where we were going to move, but I’m ready to have some classes for days when I am craving activity but need a day off from running!

Reply

Hill work today, probably, since I”m trying to conquer some tougher workouts lately.

We went out to Outback Steakhouse, actually on Monday. It was good. I got an Ahi tuna salad. :)

Reply

Happy Birthday! What fun things you were able to do.
And way to own that speed workout, Janae!
I’m in awe. Truly.

My run was outside today. Colorado having similar weather to Utah. Loving every minute of it.

Leaving for AZ tomorrow to celebrate my birthday (February b-days are the best!)

Last place I ate out at was a beach restaurant in Akumal, Mexico (fish tacos & homemade chips & guacamole!) I want to go back!

Reply

you’re speed is amazing! My husband is try to run a faster than a 6 minute mile, and you’re running almost 5 of those in a row! Get it girl!

The last place I ate out was a healthy mediterranean place called Nanoosh in NYC!

Reply

I have mile repeats on the agenda today. I’m trying to go into it with a positive attitude rather than dread…

The last place I went out to eat was a German restaurant called Jennifer’s.

Valentines candy hearts – only the sweet tart kind though, not the chalky ones.

Reply

Sweethearts candy = YAY. I did a short TM speed session followed by a killer leg workout I got from Megan’s Insta! I need her MC Fit bootcamp in my life!

Reply

It’s abnormally warm here too. It makes for great running!

I need to get back into speed work, it’s time. The break was so nice, but I’m tired of being slow!

Reply

The last place I went out to eat was a cute little sandwich place where you check all of the ingredients that you want to build your sandwich or wrap with…and each one is $.25 for light, regular, or a heavy amount. So, a heavy amount of avocado was only $.25!

Nice job on those repeats! Hope you can get some more sleep coming up!

Reply

i went to chipotle last night.. sometimes you just need their cilantro lime rice.. :)

Reply

you are so speedy!
I think candy hearts would be better if they were more like sweettarts!

Another week still before i run. But doc cleared me to use elliptical or bike.

Reply

Paw massages?! Oh my heart. I love huskies so much! We can’t have a dog right now, but they are top of my life. I highly recommend following husky_quartet on instagram.

We are trying not to eat out for 300 days total this year, so our last meal out was 2 weeks ago in Portland. Oysters and beer and donuts. It was a good day.

Reply

Um, those salads all look delicious, but I am super duper jealous of your sleevelessness and sunshine! It snowed quite a bit this morning and now it’s just Really Cold :( Happy Birthday to You!!

Reply

Tonight I have a workout session with my trainer, and I also need to run. Because I have not run all week. Fail. My 15k wore me out I think. I have had zero energy all week long. Your runs never fail to amaze me – YOU’RE SO FAST! I love conversation hearts but when I got a box of them this year they tasted weird…I think there are different kinds and I got the wrong kind. Last place I went out to eat at was Chipotle (I eat there at least once a week because it’s probably my fave food).

Reply

I had a microwave chocolate chip mug cookie for breakfast because I needed to take new pictures for the recipe on my blog. Prob not the best choice, but I am having a rest day today, so whatever!

I worked out the past three days (twice on Tuesday), so my body needs some rest today. It does not like being worked so hard for so many consecutive days!

Reply

New reader here and first time commenting! Found you a couple weeks ago and love your blog. You are a way faster runner than me, but I find that so inspiring.

Funny you mention the attitude about focusing on each mile during your intervals. I’ve discovered this too for intervals. Each time before I start running, I tell myself ‘run like this is the first one’ and ‘run like this is the last one.’ Sort of silly, but it works, and I can usually clock neg splits with this thinking.

Today was a very easy & gentle 2-miler at a 10:00 pace. Tomorrow is a rest day. 5k on Saturday and I’m hoping to run sub 25 minutes. We’ll see.

Reply

Hi J! I actually like the taste of candy hearts. And your running session with sprints sounds rough. I haven’t been running, but I do teach BODYATTACK, which has a lot of running in it. Today, my workout will be teaching BODYPUMP and going to power yoga. :)

Reply

Last place I ate out was Panera yesterday. It was a chicken noodle soup kinda day…

Reply

I did a “hilly” treadmill run this morning. I’ve been wanting to try a mile repeat workout, but have been a bit scared!

Reply

I’m working from home today because my office had a water main issue. The best part of working from home today is omelets for lunch.
The last place I ate out was Sunday brunch at Dante’s – local italian restaurant. They make french toast waffles which are awesome.
Today’s workout is HIIT and yoga.

Reply

My workout today is a TRX class tonight! The class always leaves me completely sweating through my shirt and my arms totally spent and shakey. It’s an intense workout but I can tell I am getting stronger!

Reply

I did a 30 minute cardio workout from these dvds called the 21 day fix! And I think candy hearts are super cute but I don’t love the taste…

Reply

I’m also doing 21 Day Fix! love it.

Reply

ooooooh that salad sounds good! Anything with bacon and avocado is immediately a winner hahah

Reply

I love how you celebrate your birthday week, I really need to start doing this! Today I took the day off mostly because my baby girl is teething and doesn’t want me to put her down long enough to get a decent workout in :( I feel so sad for her! The last place that I went out to eat was Texas Roadhouse when my family came to visit, and it was super good! I love your salad from Wild Zucchini though! What one was it? And no to the Valentine hearts, they taste like a Tums to me and I can’t do tums haha!

Reply

Hi Janae! Happy birthday week! I’m pretty new to your blog, but it has quickly become my favorite. Your positive attitude and inner strength are beautiful and uplifting!

I was a runner until my husband and I moved from Iowa to the SF Bay Area a little over a year and a half ago. It is so busy and traffic-y here that I decided to join a Masters Swim team. I love it and happy to call myself a swimmer at this point in my life. :) I still enjoy keeping in touch with the running community, though! All that to say that my workout today will be a Masters Swim workout under the stars at 7 pm. :)

Thanks for sharing some of your sunshine with your readers!

Happy Birthday week!! Yay! It looks like the celebration is off to a very good start (esp. since you survived speed day – double yay ;).

I have found a fabulous replacement for Vday hearts – they’re still hearts but the gummy kind. Some organic mumbo jumbo. But they are so stinkin’ good (they don’t stick though, they smell quite delic).

I don’t even remember the last place I went out to eat – it’s been a while.

The forecast for today’s workout – strength training and maybe an easy 5 miles.

Reply

My cousin’s dog also loves paw massages. So stinkin’ cute.

I hurt my back last week so I haven’t run since Saturday. (I tried, it didn’t go well). I have a 10 miler on Sunday and it’s supposed to be about 6 degrees in the a.m. Not looking forward to the frigid temp.

We ate at an Italian restaurant last week. I had stuffed baby eggplant and salad.

I really love dark chocolate and few red hearts have really good dark chocolate.

Reply

I am going to do three easy/hard hilly trail miles today after work to kick off my weekend!

Reply

You kicked butt on that speed workout!!

My workout will be at the gym today :)

Conversation candy hearts? They are so cute to look at/decorate with, but I don’t really care for the taste :)

Have an awesome day/almost birthday!

Reply

I swear the runner’s high that I experience after a difficult run is so much more powerful than one after a regular run. I think it’s the body’s way of rewarding us for the intense workout :)

Reply

Yay for finishing your workout! Rest day for me today as I am feeling a little burnt out! Valentines day hearts- yay!

Reply

Every time you post a picture of a big salad I want to eat one asap! I always like them more when they’re from a restaurant though than when I make them on my own ;)

Reply

This morning I did a killer weights workout – my arms are completely dead!

I’m more of a Valentine’s day chocolate girl :-)

I am running inside today, high today of 14F. Grew up in the midwest and still can’t get used to cold and snow!

I am seriously impressed with your dedication to training for the Boston Marathon.

Thanks again for updating us on what it takes to do it.
