Who would have thought that what you eat kind of affects the way you feel;)

I sat in child’s pose for 15 minutes yesterday after my run.  I was there for so long that I even had time to take a selfie while doing my favorite yoga pose (the only one I have mastered).  I was wasted after my run.  I felt crazy tired sooooo I did some thinking and realized that I wasn’t feeling so great because I need to incorporate more nutrients (especially healthy fats) back into my diet.

IMG 9508

So I came up with this for dinner.  Mixed greens, avocado, strawberries, slivered almonds, salmon, sunflower seeds and some fresh parmesan cheese.  I felt so much better after eating this.  Who would have thought that what you eat kind of affects the way you feel;)

IMG 9522

Quite the little scooter gang we got going on.  Brooke’s new bike also turns into a scooter (a few people asked where I got it from, you can get it HERE)

IMG 9536

Summer is going to be kind of amazing because we are going to retire our cars for the season and just scooter everywhere that we want to go.

IMG 9532

Oh and this made me feel really good too.  Have you ever read a better ice cream description in your life?  Threw it on top of some cake.

IMG 9547

Question of the day…. Where do you put your key when you run?

IMG 9548

When I am in shorts I tie them in my shoelaces (because I can’t stand having them in my shorts pockets… it drives me bonkers) but when I am wearing running tights I put them in the little zipper pockets and it doesn’t bother me when I do it that way.  Weird.

Favorite source of healthy fats?

What do you need more of in your diet?

Where are you reading this blog from today?  Home, school, work, the park?!?

Fav source of healthy fats: avocados! I need more protein in my diet though. Constant struggle. And more veggies.

I’m reading this blog from home!

Oh, and I use a flip belt for my key/phone while running because my key used to drive me nuts attached to me and I hate it on my shoe too.

Reply

I use a flip belt too, it’s the best! :)

Reply

What is a flip belt? I need something to carry my phone, but I hate the feeling of things bouncing around!

Reply

I use the flip belt too, LOVE it!

See this link to the flip belt: http://www.amazon.com/Level-Terrain-FlipBelt-Black-Large/dp/B00BBFZ1L6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1395768777&sr=8-1&keywords=flipbelt
It has multiple openings for keys/phone/snacks. It doesn’t bounce around like a fanny pack.

That salad looks delicious. Salad always sounds good but I never have the right ingredients to make a fantastic salad at home. I need to fix that because greens and veggies are something I have to work at to get into my diet. I’m reading this blog from the comfort of bed. I have a much later than normal work day today so I am being lazy.

Reply

Child’s pose is my favorite too… mostly because it’s the only one I can do :) I’ve been trying to do the Runner’s World yoga videos and they are so hard!

I am reading from home, but I’ll be heading out the door to work in a few mins!

I’m reading from home where I work but thinking of going shopping today since I’m injured. I need more healthy fats too! Please share more recipes like that one and maybe I can prevent any future injuries by eating better! :)

Brookes scooter is sooooo cute!

Flower, I saw on your blog you were having some issues. Is it hip pain? I have been nursing a cranky hip on and off for months so finally going to see the doctor on Wednesday. Hang in there!

Reply

Thanks Susan, it is hip pain, due to my scoliosis. Good luck at the doctor and please leave me a comment on my blog and let me know how it goes. I’ll be sending you good healing vibes :)

Ugh..bummer. I think mine may be bursitis or tendonitis. It does feel better when I rest but even after a nine day vacation rest it kind of flared back up again when I got back. I am sending good vibes to you, too. And I am enjoying your blog a lot :)

In the winter, my key goes inside my zippered jacket pocket. The rest of the year, I swear by Lulu pants and skirts because there is a zippered pocket in the back of all bottoms! As for healthy fats, I live on avocado and peanut butter. And of course, chocolate fudge cake doesn’t hurt either.

Reply

Eggs! Olive oil (when cooking). Salmon for sure. Nuts (almonds). Really delicious honey nut peanut butter from WF. (ahh). I don’t think I have a fats problem. I eat wayyyyyyy to much junky sugar. I need to try to cut down. After the marathon :)

Reading from work :0

Reply

Haha – I feel like we wrote the same thing. Eggs and olive oil and too much sugar!

Reply

HAHA yes we did say the same thing!

Reply

I eat a lot of olive oil and eggs. I think those are healthy fats. And coffee creamer? Does that count? I don’t know if I need more of anything in my diet (maybe Vit. D), but I could definitely do with less sugar. Candy is not a healthy fat and it makes me tired but I love it all the same.

I am reading from work. I get here really early and read blogs while I eat my breakfast. It’s a nice, relaxing start to the day.

I love that little scooter, it is so cute. And I love bike helmets on kids – cutest thing ever.

Reply

Unless you mean actual cream or half-and-half, no, coffee creamer absolutely does not count as healthy fat! It’s not even real food. It’s hydrogenated oil and corn syrup. Gross. Just get the real stuff.

Reply

I did mean half-and-half, I just call it creamer. I realize it’s not the same thing, but I always forget to say half-and-half. Although I will not judge, that flavored creamer can be really yummy – I just prefer to consume less chemicals on a regular basis (unless it’s in the form of candy apparently, but I am trying to consume less of that too). I was just joking though, I realize half and half doesn’t count as healthy fats either. However, in my fantasy world half-and-half, cream cheese, and milk chocolate would totally count as healthy fats….

Reply

I’m definitely on board with calling it healthy fat! That way I can eat cheesecake and large amounts of cream sans guilt. Hooray for denial! (P.S. Sorry for the creamer lecture; it’s one of those things that is completely mystifying to me.)

Reply

Seriously, that scooter bike is awesome!

I usually tie my key to my shoes unless I have a pocket in the back of my shorts or pants. Then it doesn’t bother me.

I’m reading from my office at my house.

Favorite fats are avocados and almonds!

I need more veggies in my diet…. I eat plenty of fruit but not enough for veggies.

Reading from work :)

Reply

I tie my key to my shorts string or shoelaces. It never seems to bother me there. I love avocado as my healthy fats. I can’t get enough of it! And I’m reding from work….sshhh don’t tell me boss ;)

Reply

My favorite source of healthy fats would have to be nuts! I love nuts on salads, chicken salads, yogurts, and in food dishes. YUM
I need more “healthy” foods. I have been not good lately and eating more frozen meals, likes ALDI and TRADER JOES stuff. So I have been making more home made meals in the crock pot. Much healthier :-)
I am reading this blog from my kitchen… I am off work today. I am enjoying a nice cup of Joe while I catch up on the daily blogs!

That is an awesome scooter gang, I’m going to start my own lol.

Healthy Fats – Dont have any, I have all the bad fats lol
More Of – I dont think its more healthy food as much as I need less bad food.

I once put my key between my boobs but since I sweat so much there (TMI sorry) I have to press the “unlock” button on my key about 10 times to make it work now. Shoelaces it is now!

Avocado!!!

I could probably use more veggies, but definitely LESS sugar and carbs :)

Reading this from home before leaving for the day! Though I WISH I was at a park.

Reply

I put my keys in my boobs too, but the chaffing can get really bad!

So now i either tie to my shoe or just hold in one hand, and then my phone in the other. It balances out. Or I just wear my runner’s fanny pack.

Healthy fats – I love avocado and nuts. Yum! I know some women are afraid of fats, but it’s always a nice reminder that we need them to function properly!

Reply

My favourite healthy fat = peanut butter and avocado… not together ;) I definitely need more protein in my diet! I am reading from home while eating breakfast. Reading HRG > reading the news.

Yeah, that salad looks amazing! My healthy fats each day: nut butters, almonds, guacamole, tahini. Normally I run near my house but if I venture out and need to drive, my key gets tied on my laces. Today I am reading from my home office–telecommute day for me :)

Reply

Probably nuts and avacados….oh and peanut butter…does that count?? because i LOVE it.

I think i need LESS candy…but i have been REALLY good the last few weeks at cutting it out of my diet so i am pretty proud of myself! :)

I have never throught of tieing it to my shoe, what a geat idea! I usually stick it in whatever i am using to hold my iphone! :)

I’m reading from my couch this morning! My key usually goes in my fitletic belt when I need to use a key, but more often than not I’m running right by home and our doors have a keypad on them that eliminates the need for a key! Super convenient!

Reply

I love avocados and salmon! I have smoked salmon on my salad almost everyday at lunch.
I need more veggies in my diet.
I read every morning as soon as I get to work… this is how I start my day! =)

I love avocado, salmon, nuts, and peanut butter for healthy fats. I also love ice cream from college creameries! I had “Campfire Delight” from NC State this weekend and it was amazing!

All of my shorts have a key pocket!

I love almond butter (MaraNatha’s) and eggs for my protein. I am a vegetarian so protein is a struggle. I need to work on eating more veggies. I eat wayyyy too many carbs, but I love them and they make me happy. I still have an almond butter and jelly (natural and organic, of course) sandwich everyday for lunch!

Reading from work…:)

Reply

My favorite source of healthy fats is peanut butter…I also like almond butter but pb is my favorite. I also love to use coconut oil!
I use a spi belt and carry my key and phone…I don’t even know it is there :)!

Reply

That ice cream does sound amazing!!! Ah! I can’t remember the last time I road my scooter. I might need to get that out and do that. Favorite healthy fats, nut (or nut butters) and avocado! I usually just hold onto my keys, switching hands every so often haha super annoying. So I make the the boyfriend carry them making the excuse, well I have to wear the garmin, so you should hold the keys. I’m reading this from my bed at home!

Reply

I love my spi belt to carry things, great invention.

A few years ago I trained for a 15k and never gave nutrition a second thought. I just ate and ate and ate things. Now I’m training for a half marathon and nutrition is something I’m committed to roughly 85% of the time. I can’t wait to see how much better my training is this time around.

That salad looks awesome! I need to get salads back into my life…

I am reading this from my parents house! I am about to get in the car and drive the 6 hours north back home to NY… boooooo. It just started snowing here, too.. that will make for an interesting drive!

Reply

Favorite source(s) of healthy fats: nuts/nut butters and avocado! I also love salmon and coconut oil. I basically love all healthy fats. I have no problem in that area! ;)

I’m working on getting more vegetables into my diet. I always have some sort of vegetable each day, but I know a lot of the days it’s not enough.

Aaaaand I’m reading this from home while drinking my coffee.

Have a great day!

Reply

I always put my key in a pocket…unless I don’t have a pocket that zippers and in that case that I find somewhere else to put it.
I should also start eating more healthy fats! I eat almonds almost every day but that’s about it. I wish I liked avocados more…they’re ok but I only eat them when my husband buys them and insists on using them in a meal.

Reply

I could use some more healthy fats for sure. I bought some salmon that I’m going to try to cook this week, so hopefully that is successful!

I usually put my key in the little pocket in the shorts, but sometimes I just hold it. Yesterday I used my little running fanny pack (a SPI belt) and I like that because then I also put my iPod in it instead of on my arm.

Reply

I usually opt to hide my key somewhere instead of carrying it with me. Like under a rock or something near my car. Am I the only one who does that? Haha!

My favorite healthy fats are nuts and avocados.

And I’m reading this from work. :)

Reply

My favorite source of healthy fats is almond butter and coconut butter, easy and so good for you! I usually keep my key in a little pocket when I run outside, all of my running shorts and tights have one and I’ve never lost a key (knock on wood!!!)

Reply

If I’m wearing shorts, I just take my keyfob and slide it into my armband behind my phone. The lump also helps the band from slipping around my arm. But I’m moving to capris more and love the mini zipper pouch thing at my back.

I feel like I live off of PB2 and almond butters. I’d eat avocado but Hubs steals them for his smoothies.

Reply

I have a shoe pocket from Road ID (it also has a metal plate engraved with emergency contact info on the Velcro closure) that fits my key and some cash perfectly.
I hate feeling things bounce in my pockets but the shoe pocket holds the key snugly.
I eat an avocado almost daily. And I use olive oil on my salads

I’m currently reading your blog on my phone from the bus. I’m commuting to work.

I am currently at home. This is part of my morning wake up, coffee, blogging :)

i used to tie my apartment key in my shoelaces when i lived in chicago. now if i have a key it’s probably my car key, and i have one of those giant fatty ones so i have to put it in the pocket on the back of the waistband of my shorts or pants. never in the front pockets though, that feels weird.

Reply

i don’t mind the little shorts pocket, but occasionally my keys have stabbed my hip until it bled! what the heck?!

Reply

Reading from bed…first thing I’m doing today :)

I tie my key to my shoe too…and then I tuck my laces in because that “tac tac tac” noise of the aglet hitting the key drives me crazy.

Reply

Oooooooooo scooter gang! Y’all need a name, like “Rebels Without a Clue” (go for “Simpsons” reference…first one of the day for me!).

Since we live in a three-flat apartment (or whatever they call it here in the Chi), we have one key for the front door of the building. I can put that or my Jeep key in my pocket, and it doesn’t bug me that much.

I definitely love avocados. I need more of them. And other green stuff. :P

I’m reading from work…which I should be doing…*le sigh* The life of a P.E. teacher.

Reply

I’m the same way & weave my key into my shoelaces when I run in shorts. That salad looks amazing. So does the ice cream! Yum. Reading & commenting on my phone today.

Reply

I don’t like chocolate ice cream for the most part but that sounds awesome! I definitely need to add more vegetables. Most of mine come from spinach and artichoke dip.

I usually run from/to my apartment so I don’t need to bring my keys because I can use my phone to get into my building. When I move I’ll have to invest in a flip belt.

Favorite source of healthy fats is peanut butter (cups). Does that count?

Reply

My favourite source of healthy fats is avocado and coconut oil. I don’t know what I need more of in my diet right now. It’s more of what I need to stop eating these days.

I am reading this at work while I drink my morning tea.

My key goes in the backside pocket along with my breezers drops. Or as my mom said, “What’s in your bum pocket?”

I keep getting calf cramps so I think I need more Mg and K. Started adding Nuun to my water.

I’m at home trying to convince my son it’s not time to get up yet.

Unless I drive to the trail to meet my friends, I don’t bring a key with me. We have a touch pad on our garage door so I don’t need a key. Believe me, it’s worth it!

I tell my clients, “You are what you eat.” If you eat crap, you feel like crap, if you eat healthy, you feel healthy and have so much more energy. I love avocados and nuts for healthy fats, and I cook with olive oil…

I just got in from a snowy run, and I’m reading blogs while eating my breakfast!

That ice cream looks divine!

I am really lucky, in terms of having to carry keys. Both my house (garage door) and car have key pads so I don’t need to carry keys with me.

I try to eat right as well but unfortunately I can’t always keep to eating healthy.

Favorite source of healthy fat is probably avocado- its so lucky its good for you because its so delicious!

fave source of healthy fats would be almonds, salmon and avocado. i leave my key with my doorman (NYC living!) when i run, which is fun because they always want to talk about my run after i return (and tell me how they need to start running too). reading the blog from my office!

Reply

Call me crazy, but I will put my key on the back of my tire if I have no pockets. Most of my clothes have some kind of pocket system, somewhere. My favorite type of healthy fat would definitely have to be avocado! YUM. We are on Spring Break right now so I am reading from the luxury of my couch, all curled up in a blanket. :)

Reply

My favorite source of healthy fats is chia seeds, coconut oil spread and cod liver oil. I know the cod liver oil is weird, but it packs a lot of essential fatty acids into just a teaspoon and it doesn’t take that bad if you just throw it back! I tie my keys into my shoe laces.

Reply

My favorite healthy fat is french fries. Oh wait just kidding. I love avocados and seeds. So creamy and delicious!

I can always tell a difference with how much lighter and active I feel when I’m incorporating more veggies and less carbs into my diet. It’s just hard to say no to warm breads sometimes. I know I probably need to be better about getting more protein in too.

I usually just loop the key ring around my thumb when I run. Carrying things in my hands doesn’t really bother me and I’m super paranoid that it will fall off on the road and I won’t notice.

Which is all kind of hilarious because I actually locked my car key and cell phone in the trunk at 530 am this morning. Praise the Lord that I was meeting a running buddy with AAA and they came and rescued me for FREE! So it’s been a crazy morning, but funny you would be talking about keys too!

Reply

I just love almonds as a healthy source of fat! It is crazy how eating well affects your performance and makes you feel better. I can really tell a difference when I am eating well.

Reply

fave source of healthy fats: salmon, guacamole, almond butter
I have been slacking on veggies the past few days, I’m just so over broccoli and spinach smoothies so today it is steamed asparagus with lemon and sweet potatoes because if I don’t have my daily sweet potato I’m afraid I’m going to lose this fake tan/orangeness I have going on.

P.S. Happy National Waffle Day!!

Reply

Loving the salad! And I love getting my healthy fats from nuts, so yummy! I am reading this blog post at home today but I typically read it at work. Shhh! Don’t tell the boss! :)

Reply

I usually put my key in the pocket of my shorts/capris. If there isn’t one, then I will tie it to my shoe if it’s a shorter run. If it’s longer and I have my fuel belt, I’ll just throw it in there.

I love salmon! Definitely a great way to get some healthy fats. I also love nut butters, I probably eat that almost every single day.

I’m reading from the comfort of my home!

I love that chocolate cake you have, is that the Costco one? It’s so good!!

Reply

If my shorts/capris/running skirt doesn’t have a good key pocket I… tuck the key in my bra. Yep, I’ll own it. I can’t stand the whole floppy-key-on-shoelace thing. Fortunately my car key is a rectangle. I don’t think a regular sharp key would work shoved in a sports bra!

Reply

I hold my key when I run. Weird, I know, but I kind of like having something to grasp when I am struggling, and the key works well.

I could stand to have more protein in my diet. I would rather eat a gazillion fruits and veggies than meat, so I really have to force myself to consume enough to get my daily protein (and I hate protein shakes).

Reply

I’m with you on the keys in shorts!!! I can’t stand it. I usually use my SPIbelt or if I have long tights I put it in the back zippered pocket. I think because the key doesn’t bounce in those, it doesn’t bother me.

Reply

reading from work, as usual.

That salad looks so good and that scooter picture is great. Brooke is going to have the best summer with her cousins!

Reply

I never thought to tie it on my laces… brilliant!
That little scooter of Brooke’s is sorta the cutest thing invented!

Reply

Losing my key on a run is one of my worst fears so I came up with what works for me and that is looping the key to my Garmin. I put a lot of other things in the pockets of my shorts and I fear if I open the pocket to take out a gel or something the key will fall out and I won’t notice and I’ll be miles away. I have one of those metal rings attached to my key so I just secure the band of Garmin through the ring (I hope that makes sense) and it works for me. The key is secure and I can look down and know it’s there

Reply

I love the tricycle/scooter because my boyfriend works for Radio Flyer :) He just gave a similar trike to our friend’s daughter for Christmas!

Reply

I can’t imagine putting my keys on my shoes….. I feel like I would go crazy in 5 strides… You must be super tough. I’m all about pockets. If a running bottom doesn’t have a pocket I won’t buy it.

Avocados, nuts, cheese, salmon and ice cream. Those are all healthy fats right?

Reply

I love healthy fats – salmon, avocado, nuts! Sometimes I go a little overboard like on the nuts. It’s tough when you love something to not go overboard. I need to continue eating these things and incorporate more salads. During the winter I tend to eat less greens. For running, I have a slim belt that straps around my waist to store my keys and phone. After having a scary experience once, I decided I needed to carry my phone for emergencies. I don’t even notice the strap on my waist.

Reply

Mmmmm that salad looks fab! I love salmon, almonds, and cheese for my fats! :)

Do you have a Spibelt? http://www.spibelt.com/?gclid=CMXW_-eVrr0CFcqUfgodgWUAdQ – Seriously the best thing I have for holding keys, cash, ccards, etc. It does not bounce and is super comfy!

Reading your blog on the couch in our converted dining room to sitting room. Love soaking up the sun coming in from our big front window.. and it’s a plus know what’s going on in our neighborhood while I read…

I like the key idea of tying them into your shoes. I usually just hid my key behind the car rims. It’s not the best place, but at least I don’t have to carry them.

Avocado.. love them.. and almonds or walnuts a great source of healthy fat.

Reply

Key and phone problems are the worst. Explaining the issue to non runners sucks too, and they nearly always reply with “what’s wrong with just holding them?” when i talk about my quest to find the perfect pair of trousers or shorts.
Honestly.

I’ve recently sewn in a pocket on my Nike running shorts as the one they pop in already just wasn’t big enough. It’s not fool proof but it does the trick :)

okayyy, so i admit I put my keys on the top of my back tire. HUGE RISK. Could someone potentially steal my car? yepp. Yikes, I prolly need to come up with a better plan. I do the shoe tie mechanism when I’m in an area that I think might elicit some danger ;)

Reply

Not weird at all! Actually a really good idea. I put mine one time in shorts, they poke a hole into the fabric and lost they were. It took me over an hour to find a house from where I could call a friend to pick me up and bring me home to get my second car keys. No bueno. So from here on it’s shoe laces, when I wear shorts.

That meal look epic! I LOVE salmon so much. I really haven’t been working out that much (and I haven’t been running at all.. oops) but I have been cleaning up my diet, I and I have noticed a huge difference in how I feel.

I’m reading this from home. Almond butter, peanut butter and avocado are my favorite fats. Yum!

I’m reading from home. Oh my goodness YES…you really ARE what you eat. I feel a huge difference in my overall energy and mood when I eat real and natural foods and avoid junk. Feel free to check out my journey into cleaner eating http://wp.me/p2HOJd-iD and a seven-month update http://wp.me/p2HOJd-lV. On that note, my go-to healthy fats are homemade nut butters and avocado.

I usually have a zipper pocket in my cold weather gear for my key. In the summer, not all of my shorts have those secure inner pockets, so I’ll either lodge it in my sports top or carry it (too heavy for my shoe).

Avocado is my favorite healthy fat. It’s the best.

I probably need more fresh fruit in my diet – thank goodness summer is coming!

I’m reading the blog at home, while eating ice cream :)

I need some more fruits and veggies in my diet asap! I keep my key either in the shorts pocket, my zipper pocket, or my sports bra- I always forgot a couple of minutes into the run even though it sounds weird!

I use a carabiner & attach it to my sports bra. I’m always afraid of losing my key.

Im SO into your salad combos lately! keep em comin!

Your long child’s pose is awesome, I can never get enough of that one or savasanah. For healthy fats I used to love nuts, but since giving them up, I love avocados- there’s nothing like it, and goat cheese which is always amazing with everything.

Avocado and unsalted, mixed nuts and salmon are my favorite!
I eat a lot of spinach in smoothies in the morning but I’d like to start incorporating more mixed greens into my meals.

Mmm, that salad looks great! I always prefer salads with a lot of “stuff” in them so it’s hard to recreate them at home.
