You know you are a Utahn when…

15.3 miles @ 8:00 average pace. We threw some hills into the mix (I rarely run hills and I am in desperate need to start doing them more) and found the perfect 15(ish) mile loop from our favorite starting point. It was THIRTY SEVEN degrees outside. You know you are a Utahn when you overheat during a run when it is 37 degrees. I am pretty sure I could have worn short sleeves and been okay.

Brooke and I hit up my friend’s soccer game.

She instantly spotted someone’s dog and made sure to become bffs with them.

IMG 7779

Fast forward to that time of day when you really need something chocolatey (usually around 4ish for me) and I opened up the fridge to find this. My mom went to lunch and brought one of these home for me. I don’t think I will ever move out.

IMG 7789

Fast forward a few more hours and I went over to my really good friend’s house for her famous crepes.

DSC 9589

She even had a DC waiting for me at my spot.

DSC 9590

She makes this amazing garlic spread for her crepes and then we top it with cheese, spinach and ham. I haven’t had her crepes since I was 9 months pregnant with Brooke… we decided last night that we will never go that long in between our crepe parties again.

DSC 9599

I think I may have had one too many. The post long run hunger took over and I lost all control.

IMG 7794

I saw this at her house and thought I would share it because I loved it so much.

IMG 7795

I think we should all do #5 when it comes to our running…

I don’t run hills normally. But, as I’m training for San Francisco, I should probably start…NOW. There is a trail near my house with a crazy steep incline that lasts about 1/2 a mile. I need to get on that!

Well, it’s 5 am over here on the west coast and I JUST finished cleaning my little apartment. When I get the urge to clean, I go with it, don’t care what time.

Have a happy Sunday!

It’s funny you mention hills, I was just whining today about not doing hills and then being tired afterwords. I wish I lived in an area again with more hills (I was so lucky in Upstate NY and had no idea at the time)…now everywhere is pancake flat.

I agree with number 5 and running. You never know what you can do until you try.

Reply

Those creeps look amazing! When I lived in New York I ran hills almost every day because I really couldn’t run any wear around my house without having at leas one hill on my run. In New Jersey everything is flat so I can’t tell you the last time I ran a hill.

Reply

I used to run a hilly route and it got me injured all the time. At least I think it did because once I changed my route to a flatter one, my injuries went away. That was back when I wasn’t running as much though. I should try that route again. I need to do hill work, but cranking up the incline on the treadmill is like pulling teeth for me. I set it at 1.0 and rarely increase it. It was 30* out yesterday and I was like “I gotta take advantage of this warm weather!!” Have a great Sunday, Ms. Janae!!

Reply

last night was spent recovering from my long run {aka eating and hydrating!} and organizing the boxes of junk under my bed. Feels so good to clean things out!

Reply

I try to do hills once a week as longer repeats and 1-2x a week hill sprints after a longer run. I did nothing but watch the Olympics and have game night with UNO while eating stir fry. It was wonderful haha.

Reply

I need to print out that list…and start trying to be more like that

Reply

Crepes are the best. My favorite: Nutella Banana. YUM!

Reply

My regular running route is pretty hilly but I did hill intervals on the treadmill last week and might add a workout like that once ever few weeks.

I visited my friend and his dogs last night. We had pizza. The dogs had some crust. It was low key. I also ran 10 miles in the early afternoon and cleaned out a closet. Woo hoo!

I am looking forward to having wed-fri off this coming week!!! We also have the following Monday off so I will have 6 consecutive days off. So pumped!!

That 15 things list is awesome!!!

Reply

I run hills everytime I run unless I go to the track. This post we are living on has hills everywhere. I love that list your friend has up in her house. Crepes are one of my favorite foods but I only like to eat them with sweet things, never have tried them with salted food.
Last night I cuddled with my sweet girl who is fighting a nasty cold.
This next week I’m looking forward to taking a trip to the city and eat PF Changs and go shopping.

Reply

My chocolate craving has been hitting me around 9 AM lately… so I’m due in about 3.5 hours ;) And it’s been way too long since I’ve had a savoury crepe. I usually stuff mine with either AB &banana or cream cheese & jam, but cheese and ham sounds pretty epic right about now…

Happy Sunday, Janae!

Reply

I do not run hills often. At all. Something I should consider adding into my routine when the weather warms up a bit considering my next half is a bit hilly. And oh how I know the hot feeling you get when the temps are above freezing – seriously feels like summer!

Reply

I haven’t ran hills in awhile.

Last night was a long time coming. I worked 10 hours for my parents. We were slammed all day long. So busy that I lost all track of time. Lunch was marked by my mom throwing a cheese stick on my desk at some point to eat between clients. After work, my parents took pity on me and took me and my girls out to dinner. I was home by nine and ready for bed!

One thing I’m looking forward to this week is being done with last week. It was a stressful one.

Reply

Last night my husband and I went out for dinner, and then came home to watch Olympic recaps from the day!

Happy Sunday :)

Reply

Last night we had friends over and made dinner and watched the Olympics. This week I am most excited for Valentine’s Day! I love making cute gifts for my husband and boys.

Reply

Brooke is the cutest!! And I need that sign in my house.

I haven’t done hills in forever. I should really start doing them on the treadmill more often because when I get back outside (from Texas and can’t bring myself to run in freezing weather), those hills are gonna eat me!

Reply

I run hills every time I run outside because my house is surrounded by them.
Last night I went out and had a Pop Rocks Martini (or 2).
I’m looking forward to Tuesday night- Girls Night of yoga followed by some fun mommy/girlie time.

Reply

I love that list. THANK YOU.

Reply

I run hills every day–can’t help it around here!
Last night I went out to a new South American restaurant with my family, and it was amazing!!!
This week I’m looking forward to watching the Olympics!

Reply

When I lived near Fresno, 38 degrees was my cutoff for running outside.

I am trying to give up being right.

The last time I ran hills was a week ago. I don’t do it enough.
I am looking forward to a snow filled ice bath .

Reply

Our neighborhood is literally all hills so we run on trails through the woods and around a lake at a park by our house! I thought you’d be happy to know that my mom and I went to the movies yesterday and got diet cokes the size of our head. We did not realize this. I’m looking forward to being very active this week with running and toning each day and healthy eating!

Reply

I usually run hills at least once a week. It’s definitely a great workout!!

Last night we had a banquet dinner for our running club. I was kind of nervous about it since I just joined not long ago and don’t know too many people. But I’m so glad we went, it was a lot of fun.

Next week I’m looking forward to (being done with) my final 22 mile long run before my first full marathon!!!

Reply

Love those! I think that really is SO true. We actually have some pretty life changing decisions coming up this week for us, I am excited for them but ready for it to be over!

I haven’t run hills in quite a while though they are really good for you!

Reply

I’m a new reader – I’ve only found your blog maybe a month ago. I’m not a runner but I aim to get back to my former more athletic state and your blog is so inspiring to me. The “15 things we should give up to be happy” list really hit home for me in the current moment of my life. Thank you for sharing! I really need to stop caring what people think, limiting myself based on my own beliefs, and trying to impress others.

Also – so, SO jealous of 37*! Here in Wisconsin, I woke up to 4* and, sadly, that’s actually warm for this winter. :(

Reply

I agree – 37* sounds heavenly. (I am in MN) I peeked ahead on the 10 day forecast and after three more frigid days, Wed through next Sun had highs ranging from the low 20s all the way up to 30s. That would be the first time all winter. Could it be true?? One can only hope!

Reply

Those crepes look amazing! I’ve never had a crepe before. There’s a crepe shop close to my house, maybe I’ll have to go now!

Reply

I love what she has hanging up. I want one!!! Last night, we went for a family walk and it was COLD but not too cold for getting ice cream : )

Reply

The last time I ran a hill… I don’t even remember. It’s been that long! Last night I did absolutely nothing. It was awesome. SO jealous of that 37 degree temp!! I’m debating going out with 7 degree temp right now… boo Michigan!

Reply

Can your friend share the garlic spread recipe with us??? It looks so good!

Reply

I will ask her for it! Thanks!

Reply

I agree! Recipe please!!!

Any time I run outside (which has been a little while thanks to the weather) there are more than enough hills around my house. I do try to add incline to the treadmill so it won’t be a total surprise the next time I make it outside!

Last night I watched several episodes of the Big Bang Theory and was generally lazy.

I am really looking forward to all of my runs this week – it’s been a while since I have been in good enough shape to really enjoy them!

Reply

I run hills…. sometimes, not nearly often enough. Last night = nursing the boyfriend bc he had his wisdom teeth out. And this week I am looking forward to attempting to establish a schedule with the new job!

Those crepes look amazing… I am making my grocery list now and figure out some meals for the week!

Reply

Your moms little gifts to you make me want to move home! Love that list!

Reply

Oh my goodness, those crepes look amazing. Crepes are one of my most favorite foods ever. I am so jealous you got to eat them. Send some of that 37 degree weather to the Chicago area–I need to be able to run outside! Last night I went to dinner with a dear friend from high school and then stopped by a birthday party for my brother-in-law before heading home and crashing after a long day.

Reply

Last night I was driving back from St. George. So sad to come back! haha I also stayed up way too late finishing my talk for today and then blogging. Oh the hours of sleep I have lost blogging! I love it though.
This week I’m looking forward to TWO of my favorite people’s birthdays ;)

Reply

It’s funny how 37 can feel so warm after weeks of weather in the single and “teen” digits. Brrrr…I love it!

I live on top of a mountain, so my route is all hills every day, unless I venture to one of the local trails for company.

I stayed home curled up on the couch watching movies with my husband and cat. My favorite place with my favorite people. :-D

Reply

We have hills all over by our house, so it’s kind of inevitable when I run near my house. It’s tough, but I just tell myself it’ll make me be a better runner.

Last night, we had a pretty easygoing night … made/ate brownies and watched HIMYM. I ended up going to bed at 9:30 PM, and it was perfect.

I’m looking forward to the Valentine’s Day party I’m throwing for my mom friends and their kiddos. Should be fun!

Reply

We live in a bowl shaped valley so anytime we run east it’s uphill but it makes nice when you head home and it’s all downhill :)

I spent last night watching my 13 year old son win his fourth straight super state wrestling title. Best.night.ever!

37 degrees is heaven this time of year!
Loved (!!!!) those 15 things! AWESOME!

Reply

I run hills every day, random on the treadmill up to a 1.5 incline. Outside I run a very hilly route and love hills.

Last night we celebrated my neighbors 40th birthday party. I even made her a strawberry short cake for her birthday.. you can check the cake pix out on my blog.

I’m looking forward this week to indoor rock climbing and a down hill ski mini vacation with the family to Duluth Minnesota, Spirit Mountain.

I’m on day 6 of a Bikini Challenge… I’ve got a streak going..

Last night I FINALLY saw the Catching Fire movie. So good…and so anxiety-provoking. :)

I don’t run hills nearly enough, and then I am not ready for them in races. I ended up getting a few hills in during my long run yesterday and it was tough!

Reply

Great job on your run! I am wishing it was 37 degrees here. I just finished a 14 mile run where my fuel bottles froze to the point where nothing would come out. At all. Good times. ;)

Reply

Everyday I run hills! We live in Herriman and there is no other option except the treadmill!

Reply

I run hills every week now. I am running a mountain leg for the relay race I am doing in May and it climbs 215m in 2.1k (about 750′ in 1.3 miles) and it is at the 9k mark of a 20k leg. Gotta be strong to get through this one!
I’m cooking a ham and relaxing watching the Olympics with my family. Life is good.
I ran 16km this morning in -16C, + whatever the windchill off the water added to it. It was frigid, but felt good when I was done. Thank goodness for one of my teammates who was just as nuts and joined me :)

Reply

i had a pretty lazy saturday night… i made dinner and watched “we’re the millers” in my pjs. :)

i’m looking forward to our weather warming up this week!

Reply

Sooo jealous of 37.. That’s like…balmy….lucky girl!! It was in the 20s all weekend here!!
Last night we had my in laws over and it was a BLAST!! My SIL is my BFF and was my maid of honor in my wedding..can’t get luckier than that that we are so close!!

I run hills a few times a week…my area has a lot of good ones that are comparable to the hills of Boston!:)

What IS that chocolate-y amazingness???

Reply

I love the first picture of Brooke. The sparkly headband is fantastic!

Last night I finished watching my new TV show… The Following. I spent the past few weeks on Netflix watching the first season and then yesterday when I got back from the track meet I watched the last 2 recent episodes on Hulu. Not sure if you are a fan of horror/ suspense tv shows, but if you are it is so good. I will warn you, if you watch make sure you are not alone. I have my dog every night but I think he even gets scared.

Reply

I run hills most of the time. Living in Seattle it is hard to avoid them.
Last night watched the Olympics with my weekly treat of Moose Tracks ice cream.
I’m looking forward to having dinner with a friend on Wednesday.

Reply

My high school mascot was the Hillers (yeah, a grassy hill was our mascot) so I grew up running lots and lots of hills. Now that I live in Southern California its much flatter but I still make a point to find and run hilly runs 1-2 times a week!

Reply

Great list!
Looking forward to running a half on Saturday but it certainly won’t be for time, as it will be on a snow covered slippery route. Running a race for fun instead of time will be very relaxing.
I LOVE to run hills but due to the absurd amount of snow we get here in MI I can’t do much hill running in the winter. My route isn’t accessible right now. I miss my hills. =(

Reply

Yummmm a crepe party! So much fun!! This week, I’m really looking forward to all of my great workouts I’ll be getting in! :)

xo

Reply

The running group has a long hill that we do at least once a week…we complain the whole way up and then congratulate ourselves when we reach the top!!!

Looking forward to continuing my running/exercise regimen next week!

Reply

I love Brooke’s headband and oh my… I don’t know what kind of chocolate creation your mom brought you but I’m drooling! I run hills about once a week via the treadmill; it’s so flat around here, I have zero hills to even do repeats on. Last night, I watched the Olympics my parents DVR’d and ate Chinese food. Love that stuff… but I’m STILL stuffed.

What I’m looking forward to… my husband coming home from drill, my hill interval run tomorrow, and making popcorn balls with my son! Hope you have a great week :)

Reply

Crepes!!! Yum yum yum. Nutella + banana + crepe = perfection ;) Brooke is such a cutie!

Reply

Mmm, crepes! Its’s funny to read your list of things to give up to be happy, I just did a blog post yesterday on 10 Tips for Finding Happiness, and there were a lot of similarities between this list and the items on mine. Some differences, too. :-)

Reply

Run hills all the time because my neighborhood is full of hills.

Last night we went to a friend’s house for dinner with the kids. Both my girls had a reaction to cats.

I love me some crepes, especially when they are filled with chocolate, strawberries and bananas

Reply

I love the 15 things, giving up the past always hits hard with me! And those pictures make me want crepes so bad!! I am looking forward to seeing my baby for the last time on ultrasound, because after that he’ll be in my arms!! And its a little hilly where I live so I tend to hit them without planning to most days of the week.

Reply

I used to run a lot of hills. I hope to again one day :) I love those 15 things. And those crepes look fantastic!

Last night I drove around in the rain taking my kids to a high school play and then amusing myself at a mall that closed early because of RAIN! Can you believe it??? I guess I really was the ONLY person walking around and I wasn’t planning on spending any money so it was probably the prudent thing for them to do. Then we got home and my husband had 8 friends over for card games and middle-aged men mayhem. It was pretty hilarious to listen to from my bedroom! Luckily, the kids were exhausted and had no trouble sleeping with all the noise.

The thing I am most looking forward to this week is setting a concrete date for my surgery. That will give me the “fixed by” date because I’m already on a wait list and will get a call in the event someone else cancels. I’m feeling very anxious and very excited.

Reply

Last night we did something that we do often but that is my very favorite thing. We all hung out at my parents house while the kids played and we talked and laughed. Nothing fancy, but how I love to spend the weekends.

Everything tastes better in a crepe! When I lived in salt lake there was a place up in the avenues that was all about crepes and I can’t for the life of me remember the name! I’ve never had a better crepe since, sob!

Reply

Love your friend’s plaque AND Brooke’s headband!

Reply

I’m really looking forward to my spinning class this week. Hopefully there will be a noticeable improvement!

Hill training is a weekly thing for me. Since starting it I’ve consistently improved and noticed hills within races no longer sap my energy : )

Reply

I run hills during every long run…. it’s the same hill, but I do it with fresh legs and then I do it again with really tired legs. Last night, we had a girls night out in Orlando and it was one of the best nights I have had in a while. Much, much needed.

Reply

What is that heavenly looking chocolate treat??? I hope it tasted as good as it looked. (don’t you hate it when they look better than they taste?)

I had lemon ricotta crepes for Mothers day last year. They were super delicious with trader Joes lemon curd and raspberries. I haven’t had a savory crepe in ages though. I need to change that. I also haven’t made your s’mores bar in about 8 weeks. I need to change that today. (It is cookie Sunday after all!)
Happy Sunday. Hugs!

Reply

Hills? What ARE hills?? It’s funny you ask, because as I was running on the treadmill Friday night (i’ve just started doing speed work and am LOVING it!), I thought, “huh, I really should start doing some hills on the treadmill…” So I guess this is a sign.
I’m excited for this week because on Thursday, my Sis and I are leaving for Texas to visit our Nana for a long weekend. YAY for grandparent visits AND 70 degree SUNSHINE to relieve the cold, snowy Ohio winter we’ve been having!

Reply

I run hills in the summer only – usually once a week at the track as there is this massive hill right beside the track (how convenient!).

Last night? Just watched olympics and sat in sweatpants.

Reply

I love the #5 on that list! Definitely something that I need to work on!

Last time I did hills was two weeks ago with The November Project in SF. It was amazing! Next time you’re in the Bay Area on a Friday morning you should go!

Reply

If I run outside, I’m running hills, but with tons of snow and ice on the roads, I haven’t run outside in a couple of weeks. I can’t say I miss it, though. I love running in shorts and a t-shirt in the basement.

I’m really looking forward to finally having our basement renovation finished this weekend!

Reply

I love the last one on the list! That crepe party sounds amazing. I’ve only had savory crepes once but they were DELICIOUS.

Reply

I run hills all the time! Charlotte is actually pretty hilly and my route around my neighborhood is basically hills whichever way you go so it’s honestly really been great practice for races!

I am looking forward to SNOW here in North Carolina this week!! They are calling for 9 inches! We will probably be out of work for the rest of the week hahaha

Reply

#14, I don’t like that at all. I agree with the rest. But “Give up attachment”…no. I think there is no such thing as too much love in the world. It’s ok to be attached to your friends, your family, your dog, your cookie. Maybe I am misunderstanding it?

Brooke’s hair is soooo cute!

omigosh – i LOVE that list, I want a copy of it to hang in my house!! Such great reminders and I know I need one the daily (errr hourly) basis!

thanks for sharing :)

I need that list! I’m struggling…. because I based my life on the exact opposite of the list. So now I’m very sad and full of angry to myself.
Thank you Janae!!!
