One of the hardest parts about being injured.

I think one of the hardest parts about being injured is the lack of control that comes along with an injury.  One thing that I love about running is that I can control it (especially when there are so many things in my life that I have no control over).  When I run I can control my speed, distance, effort level etc. etc. etc.  I go into a workout knowing what I am going to do and then I do it.  No questions asked.

I think injuries are frustrating because you really just have to let go of any and all control and just let your body do it’s thing on it’s own time.  You may think you are healed and that you are ready to run and then wake up the next day hurting again (not that this is happening to me right now but it has many times with past injuries).  You have no control over how long it is until you are back in the game, what races you are going to miss out on or how long it will take to build your endurance back up.

What I am trying to learn during this time —>  to let go of the things that are out of my control and just go with the flow.

I need to just not worry about it because: “Everything will be okay in the end.  If it’s not okay, it’s not the end.”

——————————-

My nieces learned last night that playing dominoes with a 1.5 year old isn’t really the best idea.  Brooke can sure knock those pieces down fast.

I’m telling ya, I am addicted to these whole wheat tortillas and spend a lot of my afternoon envisioning what I am going to fill mine up with for dinner.  Shrimp cooked in Soyaki from Trader Joe’s, corn and spinach.

IMG 8548

And anther thing that is 100% out of my control.  The Brookers is leaving today and won’t be back until Monday.

IMG 8550

So we took advantage of all the snuggle time possible.

IMG 8546

I can’t think of any other better way to end your night than by staying up late with chick flicks and your favorite candy.

And from the list of 25 Signs You’re Addicted To Diet Coke:

This one is talking about quitting (or attempting to quit) DC.  I am proud to say I am on day 2.  Two long days.  Long.  PS I could relate to all 25 signs, that is a problem.

Favorite Chick Flick?

WHO IS INJURED right now?  What?  For how long?

Hardest part about being injured for you (besides not being able to run)?

What are you looking forward to this weekend?!?

What should I do this weekend since Brookers will be gone?

I’m looking forward to my birthday tomorrow!!

You should look up all the donut places within 25 miles and try one donut from each shop until you find the absolute best one. Then when Brooke gets back you’ll know exactly which one to share with her :)

happy birthday!!!!!!

I am injured. But the good news is I can return, slowly, next week. I have some stress/inflammation on my 3rd metatarsal in the left foot- but the doc is confident that we caught it early and that Boston is still fully on the table. The hardest part of injuries for me is not eating my feelings in the form of desserts! I gain weight easily and it isn’t a good combination (no running AND donuts)…

I think this weekend is a good weekend to try to watch a bunch of the Best Picture nominees ahead of the Oscars. I don’t usually love all of them, but if I end up watching some of the Oscars, I like to know who/why I am rooting for a movie! That’s what I’m doing- and I think you should do it too :)

Reply

Best Chick Flick: Dirty Dancing. I was just thinking about this the other day. Maybe I need to watch it today.

I’m not injured, but I’m pretty sure pregnant running is like injured running. You really never know what you’re going to get or when you’re going to have to stop. I’m just taking every day as it comes. So far so good.

This weekend we are due to get another winter storm. I am hoping it holds off until tomorrow evening so I can get a massage tomorrow. I am in desperate need of one!

Reply

While Brooke is gone you could go shopping for your trip to Thailand! I’ve heard there’s nothing like retail therapy for running injuries. It’s pretty much one of the best cross training things you can do. I think I read that in Running World… or maybe I made it up… but either way, it’s a good idea since your awesome trip is SOON!! :)

Reply

10 things I hate about you is probably the most tolerable chick flick… :D

Havent played with dominoes in years. I saw some youtube clips recently where people stack millions of them. Oh to be the one that gets to knock down the first one…

I hope you recover from your injury soon, but I have enjoyed your blogs about injury. Not a topic I see a lot of and some very useful advice shared

My favorite chick flick is Love Actually. When I can’t run I try to just fill that time with things I love… movies, friends, doing my art work. When can you run again? I will say an extra prayer for you and hope your weekend goes really, really fast. Take care.

Reply

I think you and your sister should take a spontaneous road trip to all the donut shops all over Utah!!!

Favorite chick flick–One Fine Day and The Devil Wears Prada.

Have a fabulous Friday!!!!!!! :)

I know the injury blues feeling! Luckily I’m back to some training but for 10 days I had a concussion and couldn’t just not run, but couldn’t do any physical activity!
Worst part was I felt like a blob, siting around eating candy and sleeping!

Reply

10 things I hate about you, city of angels, notting hill, love actually, Sex and the city (bc it makes me want to be fancy and get into pretty dresses vs my yoga pants), The Notebook, The Lucky One (love the ZEfron)
Crazy studpid Love—-> i ADORE this movie, and i’m not entirely sure it can be considered a chick flick, but it is SO GOOD, you have to see it.
You should eat LOTS of FROYO and do some pool running as your “long run” on saturday morning :)

Reply

AGREE about Crazy Stupid Love. I’ve watched it over and over and it cracks me up every time.

Reply

Crazy Stupid Love is such a good movie! It was just on the other day. Ryan Gosling = yummy :)

I’ve never had a real running injury (knock on wood!) but every time I get into the third trimester of a pregnancy my back hurts way to much to run. I think my form the other 7 months must throw it out of wack? So I just keep telling myself it doesn’t matter one bit if I’m in good shape or have a super fit pregnancy! A sweet baby trumps all of that! It is easy to start comparing yourself though to people still running crazy amounts or doing Crossfit. But that stuff will always be there!

Reply

My favorite chick flick is definitely Pride & Prejudice…in fact, I know every word…haha is that bad? OH nnd a Walk to Remember…I know every word to that too!

When I was injured, it was the worst feeling in the world. Every single thing you just said, I went through mentally as well and it is just a very very hard thing for us runners to deal with. You have been here before though and you know how you can come back from an injury and I just know you will come back stronger than ever before!

I am looking forward to a 5K tomorrow and a birthday party for my friend tomorrow night!! And hopefully warmer weather (it says 69*!!!) on Sunday!

You should most definitely eat lots of donuts, froyo, cafe rio, and hang with your family :) Brookers will be back before you know it!!

Reply

This weekend I am running (or planning to run) my longest distance. 7 miles! I am training for the Air Force Half Marathon and really nervous since the longest race I have done is only a 10k.

You should plan an epic day for when Brooke gets back, all of her favorite things! =)

Reply

I’m not injured (I had a baby a month ago so I’m giving my body lots of time to heal) so I haven’t ran since the beginning of December…I’ll have lots of work to do when I get back into it lol!

Hang out with Curly and go out to eat at your favorite restaurants:)

Reply

omg chocolate cinnamon bears are the best! And something I’m trying to work on with control is to remember I’m NOT in control, He is. All we can do is our best and that’s that.

Reply

You are a champ for deciding to go without DC with Brooke being gone, ha. I would say fill up with Fro Yo this weekend, enjoy some movies from bed, and hang out with your parents :) Lol I bet you do that enough. I am looking forward to getting ahead on some things tonight! Wild Friday night, ha, but I want to start accomplishing my to do lists, lol

Reply

My hip flexor has been hurting me lately. The most frustrating part of being hurt for me is trying to come up with workouts I can do that won’t bother it. Yesterday I tried an ab workout and even that hurt. I am looking forward to my birthday on Sunday! You should find a great book to read while Brook is away!

Reply

This weekend I am looking forward to working at the huge sale we have at the running store I am working at. Seeing so many runners gives me such motivation! Make sure you eat some Fro-yo and hang out with your family!

Reply

Totally agree with you on the whole control thing. Running is the one thing I can control (for the most part). Injuries and outside forces that try to mess with my control are not welcome!

Reply

I am injured right now and haven’t run a step since right before Thanksgiving. It makes me so sad, but I’m trying to let my body completely heal before I try running again. Lots of time on the bike trainer and strength training and yoga. They’re not my absolute favorite activities, but they will hopefully get me where I need to be. For me, the hardest part of not running is not being able to actually run–the physical act of running makes me happy because it’s part of who I am.

Reply

Joy! I am so so sorry! I hope you are back to running soon. You are being so smart. Keep up the hard work!

Reply

Looking forward to today: planning my puppy’s arrival home! My husband said when he got home last night, I was laughing in my sleep, so he asked what was so funny. I responded, “puppies.” So I, like Brooke, really like puppies.

Reply

This is so timely…as weird as it sounds I actually sprained my right rib muscles from coughing so hard and so much throughout January!! The advice they give you to heal it is “be as still as possible” and “don’t cough.” Ummmmm yeah, and HOW do I go about doing that?? I never realized just how much those muscles do…besides the pressure from a sports bra being painful I haven’t been able to do much ab work (which I love) or push ups (which I’ve been working really hard on). SO frustrating!!! :(

On a happier note…the best chick flick ever is “While You Were Sleeping.” Bill Pullman and Sandra Bullock are amazing together and it’s just the cutest movie. I cant watch it and be in a bad mood!!

Will be praying your weekend without Brooke goes quickly <3

Reply

I needed this post so badly right now. I just broke my hip and I’m so depressed. Who does that at 24?! It’s hard to remain positive when going from a runner to stuck on the couch even though I know my body needs to heal! The loss of control is definitely the hardest part.

Reply

Oh lex! I am truly so so sorry about your hip! This breaks my heart. I hope you recover ASAP!

Reply

Thank you! I really appreciate the kind words. I’m going to be following your blog closely now that we are going through a similar experience. I hope your calves/shins heal quickly and you can get back to running soon!

Reply

That is awful! How did you mange to break your hip? HANG IN THERE LEX.

Reply

Thank you! I am trying to stay positive! I aggravated an existing fracture by running on it before it was healed which left me with an off balance stride, which lead to a slip/break. Damn those icy Chicago trails!

Reply

Ugh, sorry :( what a bummer. I hope you can have a speedy recovery and hoping you can swim to cross train!

Reply

The movie One Day looked so good, but my gosh, it’s sad. Don’t watch it!

Reply

I felt an injury coming on in my shoulder a few weeks ago but decided to take a couple steps back in my training–now I’m ready to rock and roll again. Although my kipping pull-ups took a hit but that’s okay.

I think that you should get a massage or do some retail therapy while Brooke is gone! =)

Reply

I agree. One of the hardest parts of being injured is the lack of routine it causes in your life. I hope you are able to cross train though!

I have nothing going on this weekend but honestly I need it…after traveling for two weekends it will feel nice to just sit here and relax. I would tell you to relax but I know how boring that is when you don’t want too…hmm maybe go see a movie? That might be fun? That randomly popped into my mind and I want too now. When do you leave to go overseas?

Reply

Favorite chick flick is Pride and Prejudice – honestly it’s my favorite story of all time. I love that you have it right there :)

I’ve had plantar faciitis in my right foot for almost 1 1/2 years now (Brooke’s whole life!) and it’s really been frustrating but between my foam roller, my night splint, and just being careful, it finally seems like it’s going away! I’ve been able to get back into running slowly but surely and it feels great.

The weekend will be over before you know it. Hang in there.

Reply

I love this! Letting go of control can help so many aspects of our lives, including running. I have a recurring knee injury that sidelines me INSTANTLY if I’m not 110% vigilant about stretching, foam rolling, etc. I can control that, but I can’t control how necessary it is and what my body needs.

This might sound boring but I would just do absolutely anything that pops into your mind that YOU feel like doing. :)

Reply

Legally Blonde, The Proposal, Miss Congeniality! Those are all I can think of right now haha. The hardest part of being injured was the fact that I didn’t want to do any other physical activity. But now, I would gladly do anything just to be active haha. I was stubborn. You should drive to get those donuts this weekend!!! You know, the ones you said were about 2 hours away :). I’m looking forward to skyping with the boyfriend this weekend. This past week our schedules haven’t really been the same so we’ve barely talked at all, and I feel like I’m going crazy ont being able to talk to him haha

Reply

I have only been injured once and I did actually cry because I wanted to go for a run so bad (kind of embarrassing).
One awesome thing about the weekend is the American Cup for gymnastics is on tomorrow!!!!!
I like to memorize a Bible verse or two to help remind me that God is in control and wants the best for me.
I like to clean and organize to take my mind off of things. Or….put pictures on Shutterfly and make scrapbooks!!!! Maybe go shopping….that always helps too!
I will pray for you this weekend!!!!

Reply

I’ve been very fortunate to not have any injuries. But I did just get over being sick with bronchitis which was very frustrating!! I felt fine but every time I tried to run I would have a coughing fit and have to stop. I think you should start prepping for your big trip to take your mind off of Brooke being gone! Look up all the things you want to do while in Thailand!

Reply

Not injured, but you know the other part of my life that I have had to surrender control to………..Wish we could be in the same city to learn to be better at this together.

When I can’t run the hardest part for me is the free time. Sure I can fill it, and with enjoyable things, but nothing to me is as enjoyable as running so I feel like I am almost missing a best friend.

Cooking, recipes, meal prep and planning can be something to control. Maybe make some new things you have been dying to try but haven’t had time for.

Reply

Praying for you Erica!

My left calf muscle made a weird “ping” like a fiber snapped on Wednesday. I went to my chiro and have been icing, foam rolling and stretching it. It feels better but tight. I have my first marathon on Sunday, so I’m going to do an easy run on it today to test it out. The chiropractor thinks it’ll be ok and he’s been right before about other injuries, so I trust him. But I’m super nervous even if this marathon is a training run race for my A race goal of trying to BQ in May.

I’m glad you’re feeing smart about your injury and look forward to you achieving you sub-3 hour. I’m probably never getting that fast so I’ll live vicariously :)

That should be “being smart” stupid spell check

I have had shin splints since the end of the summer. It has been very hard recovering because it affects a number of other athletic activities. I have not been able to run since the end of September and missing it sooooo much. Any tips for shin splints?

Favorite Chick Flick: PS I Love You. It gets me every time.
My hand and arm are casted over my elbow until April.
Hardest part about being injured: not being able to write with my left hand.
2/3 of the kids have Scarlet Fever so we are quarantining ourselves this weekend.
You should hit up the movies, ice skating (? w/ your injury), journal, eat pizza & froyo, & buy Brooke some spring clothes!

Reply

I had a long year last year of re occurring injuries… I’ve been finally on a good solid training schedule for a couple months but as of a few days ago I am dealing with something sort of like you… an injury that isn’t really yet an injury. I am believing that with a few more days off and some proper care I’ll be back at it, but really every non-running day that goes by I get a little sadder and sadder! I think after so many injuries though you start to let it get to you a little less each time.

Reply

favorite chick flick – save the last dance. if i could go back and redo my life, i would be julia stiles and live in the city and be a badass ballerina. instead i guess i have to be just a normal runner

Reply

“PRIDE AND PREJUDICE”! <3 <3 <3 I absolutely ADORE this version!

The hardest part for me when I am injured is missing my 'alone' time. It's that 'one foot in front of the other' attitude that I get from running that I *NEED* to apply over the other aspects of my life. I have played nearly every sport, and done every type of exercise you can think of, and nothing gives me that like running does.

We have ice skating on the schedule for this weekend with the six year-old! Let's hope that Polar Vortex v3.0 doesn't affect that. You should join us, since you're Brooke-less. ;)

Reply

Ugh – I absolutely LOVE Pride and Prejudice! I just finished reading the book because I loved the movies so much. The version with Keira has my favorite Mr. Darcy :)

Reply

I’m not injured right now, but I know the feeling all too well. I spent most of last year dealing with plantar fasciitis and achilles tendinitis. The fasciitis is still there (it’s one of those injuries that sometimes never completely goes away), but it’s MUCH better now and isn’t impeding my training. I hope you’ll be back to running soon!

Reply

The hardest part about being injured (for me) is to tone down my calories since I’m not able to burn them as easily as I can with a long run. I love eating. :(

Reply

Hahaha this cracked me up because I 100% agree. Exercise is how I justify eating anything and everything!

Reply

I was just diagnosed as Celiac yesterday which explains why I feel so freaking crummy all the time and never have any energy to run. Does that count as an injury? Soon I’ll be MUCH better and running on a regular plan. Powering through. That’s how I do it. Get up. Keep moving.

I love “Pride and Prejudice”. Both versions. I’ve never heard of “One Day”.

I love Mexican food so much and now I’m going to cry when I read your blog. So sad, the loss of deliciousness.

Lots of kisses for Miss Brooke, she’ll be back before you can blink…8 billion times. Start counting now. Hang in there.

Reply

I am glad they were able to figure out you have celiac but I am sorry you have to deal with that :( I have a degree in Nutrition and my dad has celiac so I can tell you there will be Mexican food in your life as long as you can make the switch over to corn tortillas! In fact, I find Mexican food one of the most celiac friendly cuisines — especially when eating out. Hang in there!

Reply

Thanks Susan! I’ll have to get a great cookbook. I actually gave up cheese a while ago as it’s a trigger for migraines but maybe some of my ~born with them and they are awful~ migraines will diminish now that I know all this. I may go back to the cheese once in a while.

And I don’t love corn tortillas but I can totally adjust.

Reply

I don’t think I’ve ever seen Pride & Prejudice. You need to go to try The Pie Bar in Provo!!!

Reply

I’m such a diet coke addict too. I’m on day 10 without one. I’ve had the worst migraines and have wanted one sooooo bad!

Reply

I freaking love pride and prejudice! It’s one of my go to movies for a good chick night :)

I hope this weekend goes super fast for you!

I’m sorry about your injury. You are amazing for keeping your head up!! <3

I’m obsessed with Pride & Prejudice!!! such a fantastic movie – could watch it a million times over!!!!

I love Definitely, Maybe. Great movie and I enjoy it everytime :) spend lots of time with friends doing things you love. The weekend will fly by!

I have never been seriously injured (knock on wood!!) this weekend you should try some new recipes! Baking is always fun! Tomorrow I am leaving for a church retreat. I’m looking forward to enjoying nature and god without the normal doings of life!

Reply

Hardest part of being injured is waiting to get better. But re-focusing on other parts of your life is a great distraction. If i wasn’t injured last year, id have never found out about my muscle imbalances and hip imbalances. It could have been a lot worse and now i’m stronger and have been injury free for a year!

Hang in there and cross train!

Reply

Saturday was my first run since September!!!! I spent months in a boot and dealt with stress reaction of my 5th metatarsal, tendonitis, and have two “cyst-like” lumps on my navicular bone. Unfortunately, I still feel the defects on my navicular bone so can’t run like I used to …. But I am focusing on what I can do & am so grateful just to be wearing running shoes instead of that darn boot!!! Thanks for the positivity. :)

Reply

Though my foot is getting better it definitely still hurts. One thing that I don’t like about it is that it makes me nervous to go run! I’m afraid of messing up my foot more and I don’t want to have fear of running. That’s just silly.

Reply

This weekend – watch Hart of Dixie on Netflix! I had never watched this show but am now hooked. I always loved Summer (Rachel Bilson) from the OC. Also watch How I met your Mother from the first episode – also on Netflix. This gets me through my treadmill workouts.

Favorite Chick Flick – My Best Friend’s Wedding

Reply

Oh man, I completely agree with everything you wrote about being injured. I know in theory I should focus on the positive, but it takes so much effort not to be angry and irritable right now! My IT band has been bothering me on and off for, gosh, a couple of years now, and every time I get a couple months of running in and feel like I’m starting to regain fitness, I’m back at square one. It’s especially frustrating bc it feels like I’m doing all the right things and still seeing no progress…which goes back to the control issue. One thing I haven’t tried that you suggested is to eat lots of ice cream. Maybe that’ s my problem! :)

You should get a puppy this weekend! Now THAT would distract you, and Brooke would love it!

Reply

It’s definitely hard to turn 100% control over to your body, because we’ve become so accustomed to thinking that our mind knows what our body needs. Sometimes we just need to listen to our BODY and quiet the mind. :)

Reply

I agree with you – the hardest part is giving up control & not knowing when your body will recover. With my foot injury, I am just now getting back into my running. When you have not done it in awile, it hard. My best advice is do things to maintain your fitness like swimming & biking. My spin classes have been a blessing.

Reply

I love Wives and Daughters even more than Colin Firth’s Pride and Prejudice. Soooo good.

Although I’m not technically injured, I’ve been battling a horrible cold/flu that has made breathing difficult. Even yoga has been almost impossible to wheeze through. So no treadmill/road for 10 days. Maybe today will be a walking slow day?

What to do without your little sidekick? Go to a movie, play dominoes :), and eat froyo without having to worry about sharing. And, if it were me, I’d also probably have some kind of countdown until she comes back kind of thing happening on my phone. Good luck!

Reply

Unfortunately this post is coming at the perfect time for me. What started as a hip niggle has turned into something more. I’m taking time off from running and hoping it heals on its own. I’m going on a business trip next week, and if it doesn’t feel better when I get back, I’ll schedule a trip to the ortho.

Thankfully I’m at a point in my life when an injury doesn’t freak me out the way it used to. Yes, it’s still frustrating, but I know it’s not a big deal in the grand scheme. I would rather take the time off now so I can keep running the rest of my life.

Motherhood really has a lot to do with this more mature perspective. In so many ways, motherhood has made me a better runner. That includes dealing with setbacks and injuries.

Love this thought: If it’s not okay, it’s not the end. AMEN!

Thanks for sharing so honestly with us, Janae! Sending speedy recovery thoughts your way!

I just got over an injury so totally know how you feel! Life is just so much better with running. I love that quote re: the end. I have a tendency to worry a lot so good reminder not too :)

I love Divine Secrets of the YaYa Sisterhood. It makes me look forward to getting older with my friends. You should watch it this weekend, I insist.
No injuries for me right now per se, however my hips have been a bit tight and I’m still dealing with a dead butt. I’ll continue to cross train and do strength workouts to help with that.
This weekend I’m taking a mini vacation down to my house in Venice and I’ll run the trails there, ride my bike, go to the beach and fish.
You should have fun the whole weekend. Hang out with friends, go shopping, take care of you. Mom’s don’t get a lot of breaks, (not that we want them anyway) but when we do, we need to take care of ourselves. It makes us better Mommy’s.

I’ll be volunteering at a race tomorrow morning, and then doing a half marathon course preview on Sunday.
Watched 50 First Dates again recently and really liked it (oh, crap. That’s a rom-com, huh?… I don’t think I like chick flicks, haha).

Reply

…I’ve tried giving up DC…I just can’t do it…it’s my one vice in life

Reply

Oh man, there are SO many great chick flicks! Anything with Julia Roberts (Pretty Woman, My Best Friend’s Wedding, etc) but also How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days! Love that one.

You should take advantage of this time and do a little mini spa day with pedicures OR find an amusement park to visit for the day! I was just thinking how fun that sounds the other day.

Reply

I ran two half marathons and a few 5k’s last year and I was training for a third half before I finally gave in to the pain and saw a doctor. I have not been able to run since August 2013. I have/had a calcaneal stress fracture. I was in boot from August till December 2013. I am slowly getting back to running through a plan that is supposed to assess any pain or re-injury which basically means I am slowly allowed to walk/run 2-3 days per week for 20-30 minutes. Either I will never run like I was before or I am will be running again as much as I was before the injury by next fall. That will be a full year out of running… I learned to never ignore an injury, getting “older” sucks, and cross training/strength training/stretching of some sort is a VERY important part of being a runner!

Reply

You should binge watch House of Cards, buy yourself something{s} pretty, eat plenty of good food, and go on lots of walks/dates with friends and family!!

Reply

Favorite chick flick is any lifetime made-for-tv-movie from the 1990s, especially if it stars Tori Spelling. I have very high brow taste.

Reply

Great post!! I can really relate to your emotions. I’m rather new to running, but I’m hooked and signed up for my first half. I have a nagging leg injury that I’m trying to heal (yet keep running on it!). I’ve take a couple days off this week and it’s more mentally challenging than anything. I think I’m going to get a stationary bike to help through this mental battle. I think the physical activity is a HUGE stress reliever for me, so if I can’t run (my favorite) I’ll try a nice second best activity.

Have fun with family and friends this weekend and I hope your time away from Brook goes by fast!

Reply

I actually thought about you last night when I was at the gym. The guy on the treadmill next to me was drinking a diet coke…DURING his workout. Have you ever done that? I couldn’t believe it!

Reply

I used to be addicted to diet Mtn. Dew and would sometimes drink it while I was on my indoor trainer bike! I went through so much we would buy it by the “cube”. I don’t even want to know how much I spent on soda during my 20’s and 30’s.

Reply

I have a small hip injury, which I got last Saturday trying to not fall on the ice. I leaned too much into my hip and now all week it has been hurting. I am actually icing it right now. I am training with Team In Training and the coach told me NOT to run all week, which is driving me crazy. Hopefully I will be able to run comfortably and my set distance tomorrow.

Reply

I loved One Fine Day…(george clooney and michelle pfieffer)

Hardest part about being injured is not being able to sweat out my anxiety. running (walking etc.) are how i cope with life’s woes and stresses….so when i’m injured i just feel even more anxious. perhaps I should learn to meditate so i could at least stay calm and carry on thru injuries =)

I’m looking forward to FINISHING my 16 miler tomorrow. I decided to run by the ocean at sunrise to hopefully give me some warm fuzzies since it’s going to be SOOO COLD here in NYC. But I’m just looking forward to that moment when I take a photo of my garmin proving i did it! =)

You should go to the mall and buy yourself something random like a rubix cube or a magic 8 ball or do some art therapy. Go to the craft store and buy stuff to make a little something maybe even a gift for Brooke or make a picture frame that you can put her pic in.

Reply

I am stealing your idea and spending tonight with chick flicks and candy! I’m also going to do some at-home spa treatments while I watch movies – face mask, pedicure, hot oil treatment on my hair. I always find it makes me feel better to pamper myself a little! Maybe you could do something like that to get your mind off Brooke being away. Hang in there…I think you are doing an amazing job dealing with this situation that is out of your control.

Reply

I do the same thing! I wait until I have a few days solo, and then I treat it as a special time to do my nails, hair, etc. It becomes something to look forward to, rather than something negative.

Reply

I’m not currently injured but I had a twinge today and now I’m freakkkin out. No running this weekend I guess. I’ll have to join team chick flicks and candy to deal.

Reply

Sliding Doors is my favorite chick flick. If you haven’t seen it, you should.

I am recovering from a groin strain that took 4 weeks of running from me, and forced me to pull out of the Phoenix Marathon. I’ve been cleared to run the Half tomorrow, but I’m grumpy about it. I’m still dealing with soreness and tightness, and I just want to run free and run long. I need the stress relief of a long run. This injury has also made me realize how much I love marathon training.

I think you should sleep in this weekend. I bet you don’t get to do that when Brooke’s around :)

I am coming back from injury and will probably start running next week but it has been such a LONG process! You will be back before you know it!

Reply

Didn’t you just get a whole trunk full of DC for your birthday? Haha, if this is all gone by now you should probably quit drinking it, yes ;)

I’m not injured now, but I had a serious injury a few years ago where I couldn’t run for a few months. It was not fun. I wallowed a little too much and it made the return to running that much harder. Staying positive would have helped me so much more, but I really think that’s the hardest part.

I know you’re on Day 2, but I had to share this with you! I’m sorry!

Have all the girlfriend time in the world :) I know everyone loves Brookers but I know for me there is nothing like some good time with a good girlfriend to put my mind at ease.

Favorite chick flicks: I love Waitress and Penelope.

I absolutely agree with you on being injured. It is so hard to not be in control of when you can get back out there. I think the important thing is to find ways to engage in other areas. That helped me think my fitness level wasn’t going down the tubes!

Also, if you liked One Day you should definitely read the book. Such a good story!

I love the Diet Coke Buzzfeed! I didn’t drink any for my whole first trimester because it just didn’t sound good. “This is great!” I thought. “Such an easy way to quit!” Well, as soon as week 13 hit, I craved my DC with a vengeance. Luckily my doctor said 1-2 a day is fine. I’ve been having about 3/week now.

Good chick flick-Lucky Seven

Do something special with your nieces and nephew this weekend. Something for “bigger” kids that wouldn’t be appropriate for Brooke yet.

That is an awesome idea!

I really liked Bridesmaids.
I am on the other side of a long-term injury (stress fracture) and just starting to run outside again. Starting from scratch is not fun at all. And it’s freezing out, but you’re blog keeps me motivated!
In other news, I do not usually eat sweets, and I have been eating a ridiculous amount of ice cream. This is your fault :)

I’m a running newbie, been at it just two months but already addicted. Went out on Wednesday night although I have a cold and cough and after coughing and wheezing my way through the last two days, was diagnosed today with a chest infection and bronchitis. My first thought was that I’d not be able to go for my run tonight!
If you’d told me three months ago that I’d ever feel like this about running I would have called you crazy… But now I get it :D
My fave chick flick is Notting Hill.

I hope this weekend goes by quickly, and you are back to being 100% ASAP!

This post is perfect for me as I sit here with a fractured rib…that happened while I was training for my first half marathon. I feel so defeated and sad that I’m losing this running time and most likely will not be able to run the half as planned. It is totally out of my control…I needed the reminder. Love your posts and your sense of humor!

I stumble across your blog a couple of weeks ago, and I really enjoy reading it. A week and a half ago I injured my knee while getting out of a ski lift (silly accident, not my fault). I’ve only started running a year ago, and I only run once a week, but I really miss it already. I also do bodypump, pilates and zumba but right now I won’t be able to do any of those classes because my knee hurts too much. I find it really frustrating and it makes me very sad. I was so proud of my 46 year old body being strong enough to run. I signed up for my first 10K on April 13th, I’m so hoping I can run then. I should be thankful for the things I can do, walk or ride my bike a short distance even if it is very slow. I know I have to be patient and trust my body to heal.
This weekend I’m looking forward to do a bit of sewing (a bit more time for that now) and visiting family. Maybe I’ll bake something sweet.
Have a good weekend!

Oh, no! I am so sorry that you can’t run for now. Like one of the other commenters, I had a stress fracture in August 2013 in my left ankle. I am still trying to recover my level of fitness. I am a lot older–52, but have been running for 30 years. This happened training for my first marathon, which, sadly I did not run. Now I am happy to be back running again and I am looking forward to doing another half sometime soon. Be kind to yourself, it is so hard not having control over that part of your life. Favorite chick flick: Love Actually

Chick flicks are definitely one of the best medicines :)

Reply

My favorite chick flicks are Pretty Women and Dirty Dancing. I can recite most of them by heart!

I hope your legs are feeling better and you are running again soon. I am battling hip and knee IT Band issues. I had a cortisone shot last week, which helped minimally, and I start PT next Friday. Running is my sanity and allows me to eat sweets-without it I am sad and crabby. I was able to get in 3 short and slow runs this week (although I probably shouldn’t have), but my psyche needed it!

Where oh where did you find a list of DC addiction signs? I have a SEVERE LOVE/ need of the stuff. Probably need an intervention of great magnitude… Between injury and B being gone- take random naps. Sleep in. Feel inspired to offer service to someone outside your comfort zone- and do it! I am a donut eating freak, and thought of you as I plowed through FOUR apple fritters. I bought one for me and each of my kids. My kids will never know they existed! Just soooo yummy! Be strong. Have a great weekend. It sucks being separated from her, but speaking from experience- you will one day look forward to these lovely breaks. Doing everything on your own is super tough. Enjoy the guilt free break and know that she is being loved!

I’m on day 3 of rest from irritating my peroneal tendon :( had to skip a 20 miler, but Boston is well worth a few days of cross training

For something to do this weekend you should check out PBS digital’s The Art Assignment episode 1 (on youtube) then find a friend to meet in the middle. It’s such a cool idea that will take you somewhere you otherwise wouldn’t go.

My favorite chick flick is Before Sunrise. Sooo romantic!

Today is my MOM’s bday, so tomorrow my siblings and I are treating her to a relaxing day. My sister and I are taking her for a pedicure while the boys grab groceries and then we are all cooking her dinner. She does so much for us it will be nice to treat her :)

This post and comment thread could be a lifesaver(not dramatic at all!) Have a bit of a hip twinge since yesterday following a hard week of training and a tough track session. It feels like it’s probably nothing but it’s there and if I hadn’t read this I would possibly have gone out and run on it tomorrow. As it stands I’m going to leave it a few days as I don’t know if I’m as brave as some of you injured folk out there. Was out 6wks last year and reeealllly don’t want that again. I would definitely cry.
I second the House of Cards binge watch idea. It’s what I’ll be doing instead of running!

Pride and Prejudice is my favorite as well. Hope everyone who’s injured feels better soon. I had PF a few years ago and it was not fun.

Reply

I’m kinda injured. I have to take 7-10 days off for bursitis in my knee. At least that is what we think it is. Worst case scenario is a stress fracture at the top if the tibia. We will see how it feels soon. Today is 5 days off. 2-5 more days till we test it out.

Thank you so much for this post! I’m getting through a pretty bad knee injury (couldn’t walk for 4 days) and really needed to hear/read some words of encouragement!

Favorite chick flick: Under the Tuscan Sun

Im dealing with a stress fracture in my ankle and missed my half marathon last weekend. i could cry! I get so cranky pants when i cant run. i’m off for 6 weeks (6 weeks!) and go back in 3 weeks for another set of xrays. i’m so tired of constant nagging pain! but its pouring right now in L.A. anyway so its a good weekend to sit on the sofa and watch movies. Going to try the stationary bike and elliptical next week to see how that feels.

My favorite chick flick is the 1968 Romeo and Juliet directed by Franco Zeffirelli. Its incredibly romantic.

Chick Flick: Pride and Prejudice, 500 Days of Summer, 27 Dresses….I like chick flicks:)
I hurt my IT band and haven’t ran for a month. But I am being very good about strength training and trying new forms of cardio. Hardest part is feeling like I’ve lost all the proggress I had made in terms of running. Starting over won’t be easy.
This weekend will be full of good food and amazing friends. Can’t wait!

The A&E Pride and Prejudice is the best. And Ever After. I also like the Hilary Duff Cinderella Story movie, even though I probably shouldn’t. Total guilty pleasure movie.

Not injured right now, but I hate having to make special considerations when I am. Why can’t my body just do all the things I want it to without me having to baby it?

I am looking forward to sleeping in this weekend! I have been working at least 9 1/2 hours a day this week and it’s starting to take a toll.

Reply

I love all chick flicks pretty much, I have no self control :) Working on staying injury free while I train for my next half!

I’m injured right now and I really hate explaining how it happened to everyone because its kinda embarrassing. I **cough** tripped over my house cat **cough**. It is frustrating not being able to train for an upcoming event but I have Despicable Me 2 and some comfort ice cream to sulk with this weekend.

Sending healing vibes your way!! I’m looking forward to running my third marathon ever, but my second in two weeks. Hoping it was enough time to rest up

You should:
Go to the store.
Buy yarn.
Buy a pattern.
Learn to crochet if you have to.
Crochet an adorable teddy bear for Brooke.
By the time you’re done – she’s home ;-)

Hopefully you’re better in no time!! I applaud you for being smart about your injury, even though I know it’s super hard! Also, the diet coke thing made me laugh. Have a wonderful weekend full of fun things to keep your mind occupied!! :)

I think you should take some time to reflect how wonderful your life is with Brooke, and how much joy she brings to you. I know you will miss her, but remember you are a classy lady and you will do the right thing for Brooke.

I also say you should do some pool running, a pedicure, and spend time with good friends.

Undiagnosed injury since 2000 finally found out the problem a year ago. Cannot wait for surgery. I can’t even remember “pain-free”.

Go to a rock/crystal store and buy a couple of pretty, healing stones. That’s what I’d do :)

Reply

Wow…that doesn’t sound good. What was your injury and what surgery do you have to have? Pain is exhausting so I can only imagine what you must be going through. Hoping all goes well for you!

Torn labrum that may have been related to an auto accident back in 1991, childbirth, and congenital hip dysplasia that I didn’t know about. The hip joint has degenerated to the point that there are huge bone spurs, gross-looking cysts in the femoral head and there is no evidence of cartilage. It’s a bone-on-bone situation and apparently has been for many, many years but silly me had no idea :) The diagnosis was a complete surprise. I only got the x-ray because the little, nagging ache wasn’t going away even with rest. It was actually feeling so much better than it had for years!

Reply

oops…the surgery I’m getting is a total hip replacement. It was a hard decision because I’m young and active and they have to saw off my femoral head and I’m scared, but I have little kids and a life to live…ya know?

Reply

Oh, wow…what a nightmare for you but I think the hip replacement is the way to go. It will be a little climb back to health, but I think in the long run you will be so happy you did it. Do you have access to a pool? I have watched many hip replacement patients at my club rehab in the pool and it’s awesome. Best to you. Take care of yourself!

good luck, I’m on day 12 with no diet coke. I’ve tried to quite before. However, this time, I wasn’t planning on quitting – I went to the dentist and had my teeth cleaned for the first time in 14 years. My teeth look so white and shiny I couldn’t bear to drink any soda. I’ve wanted some since but I run my tongue over my teeth and just don’t want the sticky plaque. I had always told myself when I didn’t need it, it would fall away-and it has. Maybe now’s not the time to quit but eventually, you won’t want it.

Hope your calf heals up toot sweet!!

I am injured too. I have been for about 6 weeks- been going to PT for what I thought was a knee injury, turns out I have a weak core. I have two half marathons coming up in 6 weeks and 10 weeks and the thought of not running them is killing me. Some days I try running and I’m okay and some days I have to stop myself. It is killing me, but you are right, count your blessings and realize all the wonderful things you have as well. :) hope you feel better soon xoxo

You should go to the movies and stay all day…sneaking into one after another : )

Watch all the seasons of Sex and The City and eat as much candy as possible! Time will fly by :)

I used to be a 3 diet cokes a day kind of girl and then one day I decided to quit. It was tough at first but I must admit, I don’t miss them at all. I still have an occasional diet cherry limeade but I am usually craving water before I can get halfway through it.

Thankfully, I’m currently not battling any injuries. Sending you healing vibes!

I hope the time flies by for you this weekend.

Hands down P.S. I Love You. I’ve seen it at least a dozen times. :-D

I am on Day 10 with no coffee and I feel great. Buh-bye caffeine-induced irritability! Amazed!

Thank you for this. Boy, did I ever need it. After four months of no running after an MRI revealed a partial tear of my left high hamstring and edema around the sciatica nerve among other things, I finally was given the green light to slowly ease back into running. I’ve been going to physical therapy every week, receving dry needling treatments, and have been religious about doing my eccentric exercises and other rehab. I slowly eased up to only 3 miles and BAM! I feel like I’m back where I started. It hurts to sit. It hurts to sprint after my little ones. I am trying to not fall into deep despair. It’s just running, I keep telling myself, but it’s been very, very difficult.

Your blog has helped me tremendously. I am so sorry you’re dealing with sore calves and that you’ve had your share of injuries; however, I sometimes fall into the trap of thinking something is wrong with my body or me because I get injured more frequently than some runners. But I see that I am not alone, and as you continually remind all of us, these trials will make us stronger.

Thank you for reminding me to count my many blessings and to continue to be patient and determined.

As a sidenote, if anyone around here has dealt with high hamstring tendinopathy and has overcome it, PLEASE feel free to email me at kmwicker[at]gmail [dot]com with tips, etc. This such a frustrating injury. It honestly did not hurt to run, but then it flares up afterwards and makes even the daily activity of taking care of my four kiddos a challenge.

Blessings!
