Leaving on a jet plane and some tangents.

HAPPY THURSDAY!  Seeing Brooke driving this little car around made me for some reason start thinking about her driving a car in 15 years and teaching her how to drive…  Then I had flashbacks to the days when I used to teach drivers ed and how I feared for my life daily.    And the tangent award goes to me.

DSC 6959

We went with Paige to do some errands and she is such a good example to me.  She tries to drink a gallon of water a day (aka my weekly consumption).

IMG 2514

WHY didn’t I think of this?  I know this seems lame but I really have to tell you about this seasoned butter because it was beyond good.  They used garlic butter (two amazing flavors in one little tub) on the grilled cheese sandwiches.  I don’t think I will be able to eat a sandwich without it now.  The honey butter on the pita bread was also really good.

IMG 2519

I am really impressed by Brooke’s leg strength because she was pushing the cart with the kids in it all around the store.  She is one determined little chica.

IMG 2518

Dinner was a random burrito.  Sour cream was one of those foods that I hated growing up and now I love some of the good stuff in a burrito.  I am glad my taste buds have evolved but no matter what they will never ever enjoy olives.

DSC 6964

After dinner I went on a stroll with my main squeeze.

IMG 2541

I haven’t had ice cream in a few days and when I opened the freezer last night I noticed that my mom had restocked the red velvet ice cream.  Hallelujah.

Frosting, cake and ice cream all in one place.

DSC 6966

I am off on an airplane first thing this morning.  My sis will be watching Brooke for the next few days while I go to Pennsylvania (to go run some races!).  After that I will be home for a day and then I will be making a quick trip to NYC for a Brooks event.  These trips have been planned since the beginning of the year and I am very excited to go BUT my head/heart/limbs/tear ducts hurt just thinking about being away from her for so long.

And just one more picture of Brooke from last night because I am sure you guys will miss her too over the next few days.

Have fun on your trips! I used to not like avocado and now I can’t get enough of it. I distinctly remember my grandma telling me that I was a true Californian when I finally discovered that I liked avocado. Yum!

Have a good trip and happy racing!! Can’t wait to read the recaps!

Reply

Vegetables! I love them now but really only liked corn as a kid.

Have a great weekend….love the picture of her drinking water out of the faucet in the tub! Precious.

I didn’t like ANY food other than cheerios when I was a kid. haha–so I’ve come a long ways! :) My dad taught me how to drive in our neighborhood and last ice cream I had was peanut butter and vanilla swirled together. YUM!

Reply

I think everyone had one of those little red cars! So cute. We have a bunch of photos of us playing with them as kids. Dad taught me how to drive on a manual. I spent hours crying in the parking lot trying to get the darn thing started. It served me well though in college when people needed a DD…

Have fun on your trip to the east coast Janae! My favorite destination race was the Nike Women’s half in DC. I haven’t done a lot though and I hope NYCM tops it :-)

Carrots, Brussel sprouts, eggs.

Phish food

Red, white, and boom mineapolis half on 4th of July.

I always wanted a little car like Brooke’s when I was little but my parents would never buy me one! :-( Good luck with the races and I’m now off to see if they sell red velvet ice cream anywhere here in Scotland! :-)

Reply

I’ve really been into birthday cake ice cream lately! usually I stick with cookie dough or anything really chocolaty. I can’t wait to see you on your trips! Sounds so fun. I’ve always wanted to go to NY

I’m so bummed that I’m not doing the RW race this weekend. I live about 30 minutes from the race and have run it a few times. I had already registered for the HERSHEY Half Marathon before you announced you were doing the RW. BTW, you really should be doing the Hershey race ;) There will be a chocolate aid station at mile 12 :) I hope you love PA!!

My Momma taught me to drive. Last ice cream was Turkey Hill (PA ice cream) Double Dunker…..amazing!

Too many favorite destination marathons. I can’t name a top.

My Dad taught me to drive, and he was awesome at it! He wouldn’t let me listen to the radio until I had my license, as he said it was a distraction (so right). He’d make me drive for about 1-2 hours, just until I became tired but not unsafe. He’d devise routes that took me on all kinds of conditions and environments. I loved it!

One drive, we were on River Road (somewhere in SW PA) and it’s filled with tight turns. A piece of the guard rail was missing. My Dad calmly said, “Someone who had their license did that!” It completely put me at ease, as I was beyond white knuckled and going about 5 mph.

Dad later told me that that section of the road is notorious for accidents. The guard rail is replaced every few months. He just wanted me to experience it with him and to learn how to safely drive a challenging road.

With all that said, I love mint chocolate chip ice cream but I really do prefer froyo – especially the Almond Dream kind. Mmm!

That’s a great story. What a gift your dad gave you. Not just safe driving but sweet memories.

Reply

Red velvet ice cream is easily a top 4 favorite ice cream flavor. So good. I can’t find it in any of the stores around me! I hope you have an absolute blast on your trips! You’re going to be super busy for the next week but I’m sure you’re going to have so much fun and your reunion with Brooke will be even sweeter.

Reply

Awwr she’s such a cutie! I’d definitely have a hard time being away from her too, but I’m sure you’ll have a great time at your races and events. Safe trip :)

The way I eat now is such a 180 from the way I ate as a kid, that I can pretty much say everything I eat is something I used to hate. Veggies? No chance. Plain yogurt? HA! And any grain besides rice? I wasn’t that creative… I’m glad I expanded my horizons a little…

Reply

Oh My Goodness – that picture of Brooke drinking from the faucet is ADORABLE! Of course every picture of her is….

Have a great trip and fantastic runs! You’ve been training so hard – I see a first place win in your future.

Reply

I love Pennsylvania. Your close to everything. I’ve been trying to get my husband on board with my moving there. But it isn’t happening.

I despised spinach as a child now not only do I eat it I drink it. I know, crazy right.
But I hated and still hate beets. They are disgusting.

BTW, I like your boots.

Yay! Welcome to Pennsylvania! :) I wanted to do that half so bad, but I ended up doing Philly instead. Say hi if you swing by Lancaster at all! :)

I think you should come here and teach my 15 year old how to drive. I’m not sure I can do it and she is suddenly itching/pushing to get her permit!

Reply

Welcome to Bethlehem! I hope you enjoy your stay. I am running the 5 and 10K on Saturday hopefully I run into you. Are you doing the hat trick?

Reply

Have a great trip!
I used to hate onions growing up but now I love them!

Reply

Basically every food that I love and consume on a daily basis now, I HATED as a child. Almonds, spinach, and sweet potatoes to name a few. I don’t think any kid likes those things anyways. Its a grownup thing ;-)
My dad taught me how to drive and he was the best. Very patient and a great teacher. The last flavor of ice cream (well froyo) that I had was Pumpkin! I walked past a menchies last friday night on my way to the movies and saw that they had pumpkin flavor! I had to stop in

Reply

Brooke is the cutest little girl in the world. She looks like she is so full of personality in every single picture–love it! Have a safe trip!!

Reply

hated mushrooms/onions as a kid and now eat them RAW all the time!!! love love love them!!

Last flavor of ice cream i had was peanutbutter mixed with straberry mixed with vanilla… YUMM.

Reply

You run AND you love mushrooms and onions AND you like peanut butter ice cream? We were definitely meant to be best friends :)

Reply

When I was a kid I absolutely HATED lasagna and refused to eat it whenever my mom made it. Now I love it. Have fun on your trip!!

Reply

I didn’t realize the red velvet ice cream had icing too! I’m going to need to try this. :) Good luck in PA! Thinking about doing a froyo meetup in NYC? :) Don’t know how long you’ll be in town/if you’ll have time…

Reply

I never liked eggs as a kid, but now I like scrambled eggs. My friend’s mom is from Argentina and makes the most amazing empanadas with eggs in them.. and they’re so good!!!

My dad actually taught me to drive and he’s got a short temper… so I do as well… I’m a horribly defensive, angry driver but I’m trying to calm that down, don’t need to pass that down to my son.

The last ice cream flavor I had I think was pumpkin pie from Bruster’s! So good!!!

Reply

I hate olives too…I actually hated (or decided I hated) avocado until I decided to try it again a few years ago – now it is one of my favorite foods and I eat it every day. Have a good flight and a good time at the Runner’s World weekend. I wish I was coming, I think I will next year! Best destination race – Hershey Park Half, no question about it. The Hershey half is actually this Sunday!

Reply

I used to hate cheese when I was younger and now I can’t live without it. Have a safe trip!

Reply

Have safe travels! Good luck with all of your races :) My favorite race destination is Walt Disney World! Best. Race. Ever. I was taught to drive by my dad, my mom could take me “growing up!”

Reply

Have a fun trip! I don’t have any foods that I can remember hating, my dad always made me try everything, but as a kid none of my food could even touch or I would freak out. Olives were and are the grossest things on the planet and I hate that their taste permeates anything they touch, even if you pick them off. My last ice cream was black raspberry dark chococolate chunk and it is sooooo good.

Reply

Pretty much all vegetables I hated when I was a kid! That red velvet ice cram looks really good! I’m a cake batter or cookie dough person all the way!

Reply

Her smile matches the smile on the car! I learned how to drive one of those when I was a kid ;) then I really started to learn how to drive when I was twelve-ish on my grandpa’s golf cart he had to run around his property (it had blinkers and headlights and everything!)

I used to detest mustard and guacamole, and now they are essentials to life. Except guacamole when pregnant. Can’t bear it then.

I love putting garlic butter on anything I can. Growing up, my mom almost always had garlic bread with dinner. In fact, she says she used to give it to us (my siblings and me) to teethe on when we were babies!

Mike got Butterfinger ice cream last time, but I want him to get that red velvet for next week! Mmmm.

Reply

Blogger froyo dates in NYC?!?!? :)

Reply

Brooke looks so cute in her red car.

I used to hate rice as a kid. It’s kind of a weird thing to dislike cause it doesn’t really have a strong flavor. Now I like it though.

Reply

I, too, loved the taste of water coming out of a bathtub faucet as a child. Mmmm. But last night I opted for strawberry ice cream instead.
And 10 years after the state of NJ told me I could drive my mother is still not convinced.

Reply

Peanut butter ice cream cake – delicious!
Hated …. Can’t think of anything actually!
Love that last photo of Brooke.
Good luck at the races!!

Reply

My dad taught me how to drive for most part but mom also helped with the practicing.

Have a great trip to PA (and NYC), I’m sure the RW weekend will be awesome!

Reply

Love your outfit!! Those boots of yours are too cute!! And Omg that picture of Brooke at the end, I have never seen a kid as cute as her, that picture made me laugh :). Peas. I use to hate them, but now actually hope that they are in veggie mixes haha. My mom taught me to drive, she was the only one who was calm enough and okay with being afraid for her life :)

Reply

my dad taught me how to drive! (and both my two older sisters) – bless his man who had a household of only women ;) BUT I secretly think he loved it, he’s a big softy.

also, I wanted to share with everyone that I’m doing a PRO Compression giveaway on my blog – check it out!

I’m with ya on the anti-olive train. I’ve tried to like them because I didn’t want to think of myself as picky, but no matter what I do the flavour and the texture just makes me want to toss my cookies!

Last ice cream: chocolate coconut ice cream last night when my freezing basement finally warmed up to a tropical paradise and then I had reason to try to cool down. I might have done that on purpose…

Reply

Have fun on your trips!! I can’t wait to hear about your races!

Safe flight! The weather is supposed to be beautiful for the next few days here in PA. Hope you enjoy your east coast travels! :)

She is so adorable I can’t even handle it!

Reply

I was such a picky eater as a kid. My food couldn’t touch or mix, and my favorite meal was grilled chicken with rice and corn -all separate of course. Weird… since now I dominate vegetables, sushi, etc. like it’s my job.
Hope you have a safe and fun trip!

Reply

Unfortunately, I haven’t traveled for many races but I have to say my favorite race was the Hershey Half Marathon (probably because I am obsessed with Hershey’s chocolate and Hershey Park). One of my goals is to do a half in California! Have a great time in PA!

Reply

She’s got those running legs like her momma! And she is SO STINKIN CUTE. Your posts always brighten up my less than stellar mornings :)

Safe travels and have FUN!

I haven’t done any destination races…but I’m still a newbie with running I’d say.

Have a great trip! And Brooke is in good hands so enjoy yourself :)
My Grandma taught me to drive, and continued to even after I crashed her car into her garage… lol.
Disneyland Half Marathon in Anaheim for sure!

Reply

They had flavored butter at my Costco a few weeks ago and I tried a strawberry butter! I could eat that ish straight up. And yes…MY Costco.

Reply

oh my gosh, I’ve never had red velvet ice cream but that looks amazing. I remember drivers ed, we got paired up with one other person when we drove with the instructor and thank goodness I was with my best friend. We were both semi-competent and only had a few “omgyouregoingtokillme” moments.

Reply

Aren’t those butters the best. thing. ever!! The garlic one is great on grilled cheese and I love the honey butter on cornbread!! Have a great trip. :)

Reply

I can’t imagine teaching drivers ed!! Oh my gosh that would be terrifying. Props to you!! I’ve never ran a destination race. I’ve ran a half marathon in Seattle (I live nearby) and a 5k in Spokane (I was visiting family anyway). So maybe I have done a destination 5k? Not sure… ;)

Reply

I had some cherry amaretto chocolate last night instead of running. It was a wonderful choice.

May dad taught me to drive in a big empty parking lot starting when I was 14. I probably should’ve learned to “drive” before I learned how to operate a stick shift.

My favorite destination race was a race in North Carolina called Downhill at Dawn, a half marathon. It was in a beautiful town and I PR’ed that race. I’ve never hopped a plane for a race, though!

Reply

A big YES to that leg strength! Brooke is probably going to be one of the fastest women of all time when she grows up. Just sayin.

Reply

pumpkin ice cream! i have been eating it daily since oct. 1. :)

Reply

I used hate tomatoes and now I LOVE them. And that butter!!!!!!! I always get so excited when they have their table out at Costco. I bet Brooke will have a blast with her cousins! Have a safe trip my friend!

Reply

I ran a Disney race and it was a lot of fun. I don’t know if it was the race itself that was fun or running with my best friend who had moved to Florida.

I have a root beer float as dessert to lunch yesterday, just vanilla ice cream but it was oh so good

Will you be traveling through NJ to get to NYC from Pa? I was catching up with your posts and I could direct you (and meet you) at our local bakery who WON cupcake wars. If you will be around :) Or is there a NYC meet up? I could try to get into the city for a bit

Reply

Have a safe trip! I’ll be there running the 5k and 10k. I’m excited!

Reply

Brooke looks adorable in every single picture! :) I hope you have safe travels! I assume you are going to the Runner’s World Half! Hope you have a great race!

Reply

PA is my home state, and it is absolutely gorgeous this time of year. I was there last weekend and had perfect running weather. Have fun!

Last ice cream flavor was the Reese’s blast. I added Reese’s PB chips in to up the peanut butter ratio.

Reply

See you tonight! Cookies and cream all the way! I haven’t had ice cream in days either. Very sad

Reply

Oddly enough, black olives.

Some creeper gym teacher moonlighting as a driver’s ed teacher over the summer.

Oreo cheesecake.

PROVO RIVER TRAIL HALF (!!!)

Two very important things: Those little orange/pink/melon colored pants Brooke is wearing? TOO. MUCH. And where did you get those boots you’re wearing in your stroll? I’m super picky about boots, and those are beautiful.

Brooke is so blessed to have a mommy who does things for herself in addition to being the best mom ever. She’s learning how important it is for a woman to pursue her passion and do things that help her to develop as a human being, which in turn adds to the great momminess. She is so fortunate to have you.

Reply

We are sour cream soul sisters! I used to despise sour cream, but now just a little bit hits the spot on nachos, chili, tacos. YUM! And my favorite seasoned butter. Cinnamon butter on fresh bread. So good! Safe travels and have a good trip. I’m sure you’ll rock your races!

Reply

Have fun with your races!

Reply

Brooke is so cute, especially the bath picture! Aww.. I hope the time you’re away from her goes quickly, but its nice that she will be having lots of cousin time while you’re gone.

Food I hated as a kid, asparagus… but now I love it. I think its the way my parents cooked it because plain steamed asparagus vs. how I cook it now by lightly sauteeing in olive oil and lime juice. Its no contest :)

Reply

What did people do before Skype and Facetime! Have a great trip! Next year, you should sign up for the Army Ten Miler. I’m running it this weekend and looking forward to the festivities.

Reply

I will be in PA this weekend too. Right where the festival is but sadly this is a sudden trip and I won’t get to run in any of the races. I hope you have a good time. The Lehigh Valley is a beautiful place to run.

Have the best trip ever!!!

I am still so impressed that you taught drivers ed! I bet you have some hilarious/terrifying stories from it…which means that when Brooke starts driving it will probably be a piece of cake for you :)

Reply

Have a great trip! You’ll be closer to me!! (Well, still in different states but on the same coast haha)

Reply

Brooke is so precious!

Can’t wait to meet you in NYC. Good luck on your races!

Reply

I really love soured cream! Last year I gave up cheese for lent (oh yes, that was hard going!) and soured cream helped me survive! I can put soured cream on most things.

My last ice cream flavour was either cookie dough or phish food. I don’t eat much because I’m not half as active as you so I don’t burn it off!

Reply

I hate olives, too! I just can’t ever get on that bandwagon.

My dad taught me how to drive! One of the first times he let me drive a long distance I ran the side of his truck into a fence post and dented it. Whoops! I should thank my dad for letting that go with such ease.

Have fun on your trips! I can’t wait to see your recaps :)

Reply

I didn’t like pizza as a kid. Crazy, right?? I eat it like 3 nights a week now.

Went to a private driver’s ed school.

Homemade brand Pumpkin Pie ice cream that my mom had waiting for me when i made a quick trip to visit last weekend. Pie, crust, and whipped cream all in one container!

I liked running the Portland marathon. It was so much easier to breathe than in KY.

Reply

I used to love driving little cars… Especially driving them straight into my parent’s cars. Haha, I swear every home video I was hitting something. The last ice cream flavor I had was French toast (so good!). Good luck and have fun this weekend here in PA! It’s going to be gorgeous and I wish my knee would have let me come cheer you on!

Reply

I was the same way with Sour Cream. My little boy LOVES it.

Your trips sound great. When I went to Mississippi for a while to finish my field work for schooling it was SO hard leaving my little boy. He was just barely a year old and oh how I missed him. But I was doing stuff that I sure love so it made it a little easier :)

Good luck on your races. I sure wish I could run better. Maybe one day…

I’m running the Hat Trick this weekend. It’s not REALLY a destination race – it’s a little over an hour away from my house – but since I’m racing both Saturday AND Sunday, my hubby and I splurged for a hotel!

Reply

I think I like all the same foods now pretty much! Not picky :)

My grandma taught me how to drive! My dad was too impatient but she let me take my own time and never yelled at me for mistakes!

Last ice cream I had was salted caramel crack in a pretzel cone from Ample Hills in Brooklyn. You NEED to go!

Favorite destination race that you have done? I haven’t done a destination race but want to do the Las Vegas half some time!

Please let me know when you are coming to NYC!! Can we do a meet up??

Growing up I didn’t like broccoli but I actually really like it now. However brussel sprouts and asparagus will never be good.
I had a driver’s ed teacher and I’m pretty sure he feared for his life too. I didn’t understand that you could slow down when you took turns. Yeah, I know. Realllllllyy scary!! I’m much better now, don’t worry.
I had vanilla ice cream last night. Boring I know but at least it was McDonalds. Their soft serve is pretty good. I wanted pumpkin froyo but it was closed already.
Have fun on your trips!!!

That last picture of Brooke is just to die for! What a cutie. The last ice cream I had was eggnog ice cream. I mostly bought it because I was curious, but it was AMAZING. Also, I had a slice of pumpkin bread that I broke up and ate in it, and that was even more delicious. If you’re an eggnog fan, please buy the ice cream, I’m sure you’ll enjoy! Happy and safe travels!

I used to hate tomatoes in any capacity other than ketchup!
I learned to drive from my driver’s ed teacher and driving school instructor. Then my parents took turns with practicing for my test (though my dad was more helpful and didn’t ‘fake brake’ when I was driving lol)
I finished the last bit of Strawberry Cheesecake ice cream last night! Ben & Jerry’s is my fave :P

Totally random, but I was at Trader Joes last night and they now sell the cookie butter stuff swirled with cocoa. In case you weren’t aware. Also, I found a recipe on Facebook this morning that is a dessert Halloween pizza, covered with candy corn. :)

There are so many foods that I hated that I love now. The first one that pops into my head is spaghetti sauce. I don’t know what I was missing. Of course, my stepdad always jokes that I hated it growing up because it always came out of a jar at our house :)

Reply

I actually HATED olives as a kid and now I love them – seriously, NO idea where it came from because I couldn’t stand them until I was 25. I was actually really picky as a kid and now I’ll eat anything except black licorice – still can’t really do that one.

I won’t name the person that taught me to drive because my driving record is atrocious and no one should be credited with that!

Have fun a the RW half!! I know you’ll miss Brooke but my mom and dad both took trips by themselves and with us and it set a great example with my mom of knowing women could be independent!

Reply

You are so beautiful Janae and I love reading your blog because you always remind me to be happy exactly where I’m at.

Italian dressing. I didn’t like anything about it as a kid, and now it’s my go to for salads. I have always been a picky eater, and some things I believe I will avoid forever (i.e., onions, mustard).

The last ice cream I ate was mint chocolate chip (my favorite). You just reminded me…I have to get cinnamon while it’s still in season.

Happy racing!

Reply

As a kid, I used to hate fish (salmon especially!). Us kids would hole ourselves up in one room of the house, put blankets in the cracks under the door and hide out until the smell of our parent’s salmon dinner was gone. Now, I eat fish 2-3 times per week!

My Dad taught me how to drive….and we’re both still alive!

Last ice cream flavor I had was Baskin Robbins Trick-or-Treat Oreo……so good!! :)

I’ve really only travelled to one city to race – Seattle. It’s where my brother, SIL, and my adorable nephews live. I just signed-up for the Hot Chocolate 15K in Seattle on March 2, so I have another excuse to go up and visit! :) :)

Reply

I used to hate sweet potatoes now i LOVE them! no idea what happened

Reply

I used to hate OJ as a kid…so random! My dad taught me how to drive, and his motto was, “Nobody WANTS to hit you.” Needless to say, I’m not a great driver! The last ice cream I had was Blue Belle Krazy Kookie Dough. It’s made for 5 year olds. :)

Reply

Believe it or not I hated CHEESE when I was growing up! Now it’s basically my favorite food!

Reply

I used to hate cheese and yogurt growing up. Now I love both, including greek yogurt.
I haven’t been to too many destinations for races, but I ran in the Houston marathon earlier this year and that was a fun city to see. However, the weather did not cooperative and it was pouring rain, freezing, and windy so that was not fun.

I just did the Melbourne half marathon. It was flat and fast and pretty! If you’re ever in Australia check out what races are on!

I learned how to drive by driving my parents car down my grandparents long gravel driveway through a pasture in the middle of the Alabama country every time we went to visit them. Some great memories.

Favorite ice cream is Ben and Jerry’s Half Baked. Or basically any other Ben and Jerry’s flavors.

spinach was a veggie I never ate as a child, it was cooked and slimy. Now I eat it raw

I am so late to checking this post but the pic of Brooke pushing the cart!!! I ran sprints/short distance track in high school and my coach was always telling me “JRM GET YOUR KNEES UP….or JRM DRIVE YOUR LEGS”. Yes it had to be screamed at me because I was not the most gifted runner. Brooke is already ahead of my high school me!!

I used to not eat ice cream as a kid because I have sensitive teeth and it hurt too much. I got over it, though, because ice cream is too delicious.
