The last day at the beach house.

On the last day at the beach house Brookers and I went on an awesome 4 mile walk to explore the beach and area.

It is a very good thing that my friends like delicious food too so that when we do things together I know the food is always going to be the best.

I figured out a way for Brooke to enjoy the beach.  She just has to be in a tent, on a chair and not be touching any sand while playing with sand toys.  It worked.

I have had a lot of really big goals in my life but I think this one is my favorite:  my goal is to go to Marianne’s for ice cream every single time I am in Santa Cruz.  One step closer to my goal.

I had the strawberries n creme (my new favorite from here) and coconut fudge.

The rest of Friday’s food was boring and I ate things like pb & j and a turkey sandwich.   I think I want to go back to the beach house.  Time to start finding someone that will loan me a few million to go buy my own.

My coach sent me this video and I wanted to share it with you….Tips- GOING FAST THROUGH GOING SLOW.  15-20% of runs are hard…the rest EASY and slow.  Enjoy and have fun for the majority of your training!

Love this:

Its fine i ran today

Rest days= I get bugged by things.  Running days= I am the most easy going person in the world and nothing bothers me:)

Hope your Saturday is awesome…what are your plans today?

Love that pic of Brooke! Her eyes look so blue!

Plan is to go for a long slow run to recover from my hard run yesterday!

We were in San Diego last week, and wow it was beautiful! I want to live in Cali, but we can’t afford Cali!

I am so hangry on rest days it isn’t even funny. I don’t get it! Except that I don’t get the endorphin rush so I guess I kind of do get it. Living by the beach (or on it) is seriously my favorite part about summer. Except I live on a boat so I guess it’s slightly different. Leaving is always hard though! I need to go get ice cream. It’s going to happen. Tonight.

I could so live at the beach too! I think we need to win the lotto. I was in Destin, Florida last month and in a few days I’m making the 12 hour drive to go back…. I just can’t stay away! ;)

It is so true – when I run my mood is 100 times better. no matter how much I may not feel like running I know that once it is over I always feel SO much better. On the days when I don’t run I find that I can be much more moody and frustrated by things – even the smallest run can change around my mood!

i feel the same way! i am a much nicer person on the days i exercise ;-)

Today is OUR day at the beach house! We’re heading down to my husband’s cottage on the lake for food, fun and beach!

You read my mind. Today is suppose to be my rest day but just feel like going for a slow run because I’ll feel good the rest of the day.

Today my son starts his first swimming lessons (4 months old) yay! Tomorrow 16km run. Hope weather holds up:)

There is nothing better than ice cream on the beach in the summer!!! Perfect :) I love rest days, but of course I am happier on workout days. It’s those endorphins!

I want to go to your beach house :) I’m the same way! Plus I’m more awake too when I run lol. Um, Coconut Fudge ice cream?? I might have to eat some even though I’m Lactose Intolerant, it sounds way to good. Hopefully today I’ll get a nice run in, do some cleaning, and then do some practicing for my Speech final. Have a good Saturday :)

I am trying to embrace rest days. I am determined to run a 1/2 marathon in a year and my knee has been what has been holding me back. I have done many marathons and 1/2s racewalking but this is just a goal I now have. So I am trying to run and walk every other day and that seems to be helping. I was trying to do run/walk one day and then racewalk the next but that still made my knee hurt. I need to find a nonimpact sport that I love on the rest days as those days just feel odd.

I’m about to go run. Then my mom and her husband are coming to visit me for the week. I am so excited!!! I have not seen my mom since Christmas!

SAME here on the rest day slump. I get to ride my new road bike today eeeee!!
I have a nickname for Brooke – Brookali Broccali :)

I use my rest days as my exciting eating days…….try a new recipe, restaurant, go out for ice cream, have friends over etc.
I find if I can’t run planning out of the norm dining experiences helps me not be so bugged.

Reply

mmm, that ice cream looks so good! I already did my four miler this morning, now I am headed to enjoy the beach!

I know rest days are good days and help the body to recover but I always feel sluggish and then I get scared. My mind starts to think since I took one rest day that the next day I won’t want to get up and run!!! Weird, right?

I have GOT to remember that rest day and easy days are super important in getting faster!! I def push it too often! I think i need a coach who MAKES me take it easy… hm… that breakfast looks delicious!

I don’t blame Brooke for being grumpy about sand. I don’t like when I sit on the beach and it gets in uncomfortable places, either! I’m definitely grumpy the days I don’t get up and go SOMEWHERE. The more inactive I get = the more grumpy I get as the day ends.

Now I want scrambled eggs for breakfast!

Oh how I love the beach, summer, ice cream and running! I would love to live on the beach…I would love to live even BY a beach! I have no idea why I have never lived someplace warm!!!
Today is a slow run for me and tomorrow is a day off. I get a bit antsy on days off too and I eat more on days off :). I do take one day off a week though because I am pretty sure injury will happen if I don’t.
Have a great day!

Brooke’s eyes are beautiful!

Much needed running rest day!

Leaving the beach house and vacation is always tough, but if I had a little girl like Brooke, that would make it a little bit better. She is gorgeous! I love that running quote. I wasn’t going to run today, but I got up and forced myself to go and now I feel great. It really is all fine if you ran today. Have a great weekend!

Reply

I’m jealous. Ice cream is my weakness. I have even started and ice cream scoop collection.

I am currently training for my third half marathon, and I am going super slow, I don’t want to get injured again. For today I am do complete 2 1/2 miles, I am sore so I am going to walk those miles

Hey HRG! I love your blog & the other day my mom (who is a pediatric occupational therapist) was talking to me about how many young kids will have (very minor) sensory stimuli that are very aversive to them and a big one for a lot of kids is sand! She said an easy solution is to apply a deep (but gentle) pressure massage to the bottom of a baby’s feet then slowly place them on the sand as that helps them from getting overwhelmed from the texture of the sand! I don’t know as much about it as her but if you check out “reflexology for children” it might help sand be less off-putting for Brooke :) Hope that helps & have a great day!

That makes total sense! Thank you so so so much! I am totally going to try that out!

Looks like you had a wonderful time at the beach house!! :)
Unfortunately I don’t have any fun plans… I’ll be working all day… 12 hour shift here I come! ;)
I hope your Saturday is awesome!! :)

I am totally with you I am like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde when in comes to rest vs running days (or is it the other way around).

Brooke looks very comfy in her beach throne & castle! It’s been a very soggy weekend for us, but we still managed to enjoy some pool time this morning. Rain didn’t bother the girls one bit…they were already wet anyway!

You are so right your model is very beautiful and the phorpgtaohy clever, insightful and harmonious May the New Year bring you both much happiness, joy and love Sheila (the old lady)

Thanks for the video. I have such a hard time backing off and remembering that sometimes taking it easy, truly easy, in training will actually make me faster. I always want to push and I know I burn out because of it.

My amazing boyfriend is visiting from Washington, and we are going to go to the beach! :-D

Brooke and I would be perfect beach buddies, because I don’t like getting sand on me either! :-)

I have to go back to work today. :(
But my boyfriend and I spent yesterday at Walt Disney World! :)

Ran 10 miles in Central Park and it was brutal-I went at 8am but it was already crazy hot!!! I got the feeling that I’ll spend the rest of my day napping-hot runs exhaust me!!!

I’m so grumpy on the days I don’t work out. Like “WHAT?? You ate the last *insert anything here*? I HATE YOU!” I have a really good marriage… haha

Cannot go wrong with ice cream in the summer! I went for an ice cream sandwich last night and it was fabulous ;-)

I totally agree, if I get a workout in I’m totally chill that day, if not WATCH out:)

We’re having a belated 4th of July cookout tonight since we finally have everybody home today :) But, if I don’t get a run in soon, I’ll have to scrub the tile off the bathtub…:p Trying to keep busy is driving me crazy!!

Looks like so much fun! It never fails, I’m such an easygoing person when I’ve run that day. I try not to be too much of a grump on rest days, but I don’t know what else to do with all that pent-up energy! It’s bound to unleash itself on unsuspecting boyfriends :(

You are hilarious the way you’re lovingly cradling that ice cream cup in both hands! Maryanne’s is GOOOODDDDD :)

haha love that running pic I am exactly the same! I am soo much nicer after I run :)

I totally agree. I’m so crabby on rest days! Right after a run I am the happiest person on earth. I ran a my second half marathon earlier today… NEW PR!! 1:45:51! And I used your tip of starting slow and working faster. Holy cow, it made SUCH a difference! Hope you’re having a super Saturday! :)

My 9 month old loves sand so much we have to keep a pacifier in his mouth to keep him eating it. Makes great pictures though!

It’s fine,I ran today has been my screensaver for a few months now. Love it!
Long day doing wedding up-do’s beginning at 4:00 am. Yikes! Needless to say…….we didn’t make it to the wedding.
No run today. :(

I am the same way. If I am cranky my fiance always asks “You didn’t run today, did you?” and then insists I go get in a quick endorphin fix :)

Reply

Firm believer in that Fast:Slow ratio.

I love the Brooke-at-the-beach solution! I can totally relate. When my oldest son was about a year old and intensely disliked the sand, we went to the beach for an all day party and constructed an “anti-sandbox”. This was only practical because my husband had the appropriate lumber and tools hanging around the house and a really big truck to bring it all…and the know-how to make it all in literally 10 minutes.

And congrats on your July 4th win!!!!

That last line is SO me. On non running days I am no fun to be around….that’s why I usually end up going everyday. Although I try to tell myself I need one day of rest a week, but it’s SO hard!

Reply

I understand Brooke. I love the beach but hate sand on my feet and between my toes. My mom laughed at me the last vacation we took because I wear swim shoes and try to avoid getting sand in my shoes. She says I was like that as a kid too. Go figure. Love the pics though, Brooke has gotten even cuter and your food definitely made me hungry!

If you like that quote, you should check out the “It’s all good. I ran today.” t-shirt from the Another Mother Runner ladies’ shop. I have it (even though I’m not yet a mother) and love to wear it on run days. http://anothermotherrunner.com/store/lifestyle-tees/its-all-good-i-ran-today-2/

I love you blog! I started following it before you had Brooke. You are such a happy writer. It is the first thing I do when I get to work and always starts my day of great. Not to mention a great inspiration to keep running.
In Santa Cruz you should also try Mission Hill Creamery (https://www.facebook.com/missionhillcreamery?fref=ts). Mint Chocolate confetti is so far my favorite, but I still want to try a lot of the flavors, sadly recently moved across the country so not an easy task.
Looking forward to you next post!
