Brooke’s first group exercise class.

This morning I got to run with Bangs Friend and when we met up at our special meeting place we realized we were wearing the same outfit, we looked really cool in our matching hot pink shorts and black tops.

I could not get my legs to move on our run and so I forced Katie (Bangs Friend) to go extra slow with me.  My calves were so incredibly tight because I have been trying to switch up my form and so they felt like they were going to snap any second (please note I am always dramatic about everything).

I multitasked when I got home and did core work while using Compex Recovery Plus mode on my calves to get them back to normal asap.

Anyone else tie their key to their shoes?  I always have to double knot my shoe laces because otherwise they will come untied every ten steps.

We went to Brooke’s first ever class at the gym and we will be going to MANY MORE of these.  Brooke was all over the place, made new friends and rocked climbing up and down the pyramid of steps.   The parachute in the back kind of freaked her out.

She didn’t quite understand the circle time and why all the kids were calmly sitting with their parents.

Day 1 of ‘trying not to spend every dime we make on food’ went well today and I stuck to the basics at TJ’s.  Yes, Powerberries are in fact basics.  If you don’t have any chocolate in your shopping cart you are doing something wrong.

Photo 1

I had a salad with chicken cream cheese, watermelon (x 1,000,000) and a baked potato.  It tasted delicious until Billy texted that they had Chicago deep dish pizza for lunch.  Food jealousy.

When was the last time that you suffered from food jealousy?  What food/meal were you jealous about?

During your workout today did your legs feel fresh and ready to go or heavy and wanting to get back in bed like mine did?

What do you do with your keys when  you run?

I always make sure to get the tj pizza crust! And salad dressings. I also got some sea salt caramels last time that lasted until I got half way back home…

Reply

Last TJ’s purchase = Sunbutter. Always, always sun butter.

WAit, edit to add: the champagne gorgonzola salad dressing. bomb.com

I felt really great on my morning run today. I’m sorry your legs felt bad, I need to try that recovery apparatus your using. I was jealous of my daughters tater tots last night, I really wanted some but I didn’t cave.

Key goes on the shoes quit a bit. I always always always have to buy tjs cookie butter!!! 3 or 4 jars!!! I live 1 1/2 hours from the store!!! Gotta stock up when you can!!!

After reading your blog post this morning (and a few of the comments) I thought I sucked at food budgeting (or lack there of) but now reading that chart, we fall into the thrifty plan. Go me! lol. I always have meal plans, make a grocery list and stick to it pretty well. BUt I do have impulse buys every now and then – last week I bought some dark chocolate dusted almonds…and I am reminded why I should never do crap like that. (something about the package saying 6 servings and I ate it in 2. Hmmmm)

Also, I am slightly offended guys get more of a food allowance than girls do. I feel like that is pretty prejudice. Pretty sure I eat more than Ross ;)

I did a weights/body pump class today and we literally did lunges for 20 minutes. SO ya. My legs were dead and I wish I were in bed instead.

I bought the butterscotch and sea salt caramels last time I was at TJ..per your request….and yet again, I managed to show that label with it’s serving sizes who was boss.

Hope your calves start feeling better!

My husband gets catered lunches almost daily and they sound delicious, so i am quite familiar with food jealousy. Right now TJ’s watermelons are cheap in SLC so I get 2 every time I go! I also LOVE TJ’s frozen veggies and their chipotle salsa.

Reply

My husband is at Trader Joes as we speak picking up cereal bars and harvest grain mix. We can not live without the cereal bars. We do however have to pretend they are very disgusting in our house as my 2 year old is allergic to oats so we do not want her to be interested in them. I like that chart that you posted, I am doing ok with my food budget! They did not have a category for a 2 year old that has to eat constantly. I am not kidding, the other day she was stuffing her face with a banana and as she was eating she was telling me that she was hungry. We think she eats more then me and sometimes my husband. Since she spent her first 21 months hanging out in the 5% for weight we are ok with this as she is now in the 25% for weight. I have no idea where she puts it.
Oh and she likes your blog because you post food pictures. She likes Brooke too, she says “Aww Baby” and then she sees the food and says “I want that”.

I LOVED the parachute thing in gym class growing up! I miss that thing actually now that I’m remembering it. I’m glad she was miss popularity making new friends to add to her already larger than mine posse. Cookie butter is my go to item at trader joes. Followed by the chocolate covered butterscotch caramels. Amazing.

Reply

Ugh my husband texted me a picture of his Bahn Mi sandwich today he was eating for lunch. Totally made me mad as I was eating a grilled cheese and a microwaved potato.

Ummm and someone is totally going to steal my car someday because I always just throw my keys behind the driver side tire. Here is to hoping that car thieves are tucked tightly in their beds at 5am while I am running.

Reply

Ha. I use to always stow mine in the groove in my roof rack where the bike tire went. I’d always look around to make sure no creepers were watching me. Car never got stolen!

Reply

OMG you are brilliant! I never would’ve thought to tie my key to my shoe. Usually I just put it into that little pocket in my shorts, but I’ve returned home keyless a few too many times. Few things are worse than having to re-do your entire route looking for your key

Reply

I LOVE PIZZA!!! Yummmm!

On runs where I park my car – I usually loop one of my hair ties through the key ring and carry the key on my wrist.
On runs near my house – I put the key in my MP3 player case!

Reply

Haha I have the same problem with my shoe laces untying itself too often, thank goodness I don’t tie my key on it. I wear my lulu shorts/tights when I run and the key is kept safely in the hidden pockets on the waistband.

Reply

Your watermelon. I was so jealous of it. So I went out and bought one and regretted absolutely nothing. Also, I’ve never actually been to Trader Joes, but I am 110% planning on going to explore and see if they have any tasties I must have. So if you have any recommendations of things to buy there that they don’t have at Food Maxx (because I budget by shopping at places like Food Maxx;), I would appreciate it.

Reply

TJ has these amazing banana chips. I think they are freeze dried or something. I don’t remember exactly but they are the best things ever!

Oh and my legs felt so dead and heavy today. Hopefully they will feel better tomorrow in honor of national running day!

Reply

haha… I enjoy all your pictures of Brooke! So cute!
I do indeed tie my key to my shoes because I double knot mine too! If I don’t I’m paranoid they’ll come undone and I’ll have to stop to tie it and then you just can’t get into the same groove… you know?! ;)
I suffer from the seefood jealousy… but also the seafood lol… I wish I could afford shrimp and lobster and crab for every meal! ;)

Reply

Yesterday was cold and rainy at work and my co-worker mentioned that soup would warm her up. It made me think of Vietnamese food, and since then I’ve been craving it. I’m jealous cause I know people are eating Vietnamese food right now and I’m not.

Reply

Oh man, Chicago deep dish pizza is the best!!

Brooke’s class sounds like so much fun. I’d love to do that with Hunter when he gets a little older. I’m sure it’s helpful for them to get some energy out, and mom gets to make new friends! Win-win!

That food budget chart is very interesting! Thanks for sharing that.

Reply

I have TJ envy because we don’t have one anywhere close to us! My legs felt so sore and heavy today. I ran a mile race on Sunday night, and I’m still sore! Plus, today’s run was super hilly, so that didn’t help. I often tie my key on my shoelaces too. When I put it in the little pocket on my shorts, I find myself constantly checking to make sure it’s there. Brooke’s class looks so fun!

Reply

my boyfriend works in the city where they have all kinds of good places to eat. I stay at home and work evenings in our small town. I get jealous of him every time he goes out to eat. Really jealous. I couldn’t tell you the last time I actually got to go out and eat a meal. :( I feel sorry for myself.
That food budget makes me feel better about what I spend. Food is expensive and I refuse to save money buy eating roman noodles.

Reply

We actually spend close to that, but would love to cut back some more. I tie my key to my shorts drawstring and also have to double knot my shoe laces.

Reply

I bought a watermelon, strawberry jam and their sunblock. A random trip but it was everything I needed at the time. LOVE TJ’S!

I always used to tie my key to my running shoes too until I started running in the Five Finger Vibrams 3 years ago. Now I just have to wear a wrist holder or put it in that teeny tiny little pocket inside my running shorts.

Reply

Wow, I thought I was overspending on food for our family of 4 but I actually fit into the thrifty plan. Food is not something we scrimp on (we save in other areas). We don’t eat a lot of processed foods and rarely eat out, so we like to buy what we like and not worry too much about budget. I stay within 15 dollars of the same amount each week without really trying. I find toiletries, vitamins and other extras are what adds up even more than food.

Reply

After looking at that chart, I don’t feel so bad about my food budget anymore!

Reply

The only time I really experience food jealously is on the rare occasion I’m eating out somewhere and the only veggie option is totally lame and everyone else is loving their meal.

I was just tired today on my work out- instead of running tomorrow I think I’m going to lay low and do some yoga.

My key is typically zipped in a pocket in my shorts- running shorts HAVE to have a zipped pocket in order for me to buy them.

I shop at TJ’s weekly and my recent fav. item are the giant white beans in pasta sauce- they’re near the pasta sauces (duh!) and they’re great. Power berries do NOT make it into my cart because I can consume the entire bag in one sitting- dangerous.

Reply

My legs were dead today. They did NOT wanna run, but I forced them to anyway. I rode about 80 miles over the weekend for a spin class training, so my legs had good reason to feel like jelly. I think I’ll give them a rest tomorrow. :p I completely agree, chocolate is a must on my shopping list too!

Reply

“If you don’t have any chocolate in your shopping cart you are doing something wrong” <– truest statement I heard all day :D Having a severe allergy means I have to deal with food jealousy on a pretty regular basis… so much so that it's almost started to feel normal and I don't even really get jealous anymore. The worst is not being able to enjoy the dessert table when I'm out somewhere though… That one kind of always stings.

Reply

my last tj’s purchase consisted of ezekiel sesame bread, turkey, and hummus… i was craving a turkey sandwich that day =) i’m pretty much obsessed with their entire store, though!

Reply

I usually tie mine to my shoe as well- I don’t trust those tiny pockets in shorts! I don’t go to Trader Joe’s often…but when I do, it is for dark chocolate PB cups, black bean and corn salsa, and smoked salmon.

Reply

“If you don’t have any chocolate in your shopping cart you are doing something wrong” it does not get much more accurate than that. I hit the gym for heavy legs today – my legs felt good during, but I’ll probably be feeling the lead legs tomorrow.

Reply

That chart is really interesting…My husband and I (just a family of 2 right now) eat almost all organic food and we only spend about $80-90 a week on groceries (mostly from Trader Joe’s), and that’s on the low end, so we must be doing well!

Reply

We always stock up on Sunflower Butter, Frozen Roasted Corn, Frozen Brown Rice, and Organic fruit sweetened jelly! I love TJs :)

Reply

Chicago Deep Dish pizza while not in Chicago? I’m skeptical and I’m also from Chi-land. If you want a true and amazing deep dish, you can order a frozen one from Giordano’s (Giordanos.com). It’s like heaven in your mouth. Now, I’m food jealous – guess what I’m ordering for dinner tonight!!

I’m taking a day off from running, I didn’t get home until 1am as my plane from Denver didn’t land until midnight. After 5 hours sleep and work all day, I wouldn’t trust myself not to get hit by a car.

Reply

I try and stay on budget by not grocery shopping too, too often. If I’m out of some of my favorites, I’ll try to survive for a few days without them before shopping again. I probably just end up spending more at the store after waiting so long but oh well, it seems like it works haha. And Brooke venturing in the middle of the floor! Love it.

Reply

Did Brooke keep her shoes on? For some reason when I see the pic of her crawling into the middle of the circle I half thought “and then she took her shoes off.” Alas, just me.

Trader Joe’s: I go in phases with them. Right now I can’t get enough of their Mediterranean yogurt dip. Like a tangy, creamy, slightly blended smooth cheese dip.

Reply

I am so having food jealousy about your watermelon right now! :)

Reply

I had major food envy today at lunch while reading Cooking Light. Is that normal to read a cooking magazine while eating a meal? Yes I think so :)

Reply

I was jealous about froyo!

I haven’t run yet, but I’m hoping they will feel good!

I never run with keys

Reply

I have food jealousy every time I read your blog. Except for the seafood.
I usually run from my house, so I don’t carry a key. If my roommates leave, I just get back in through the garage.

Reply

Food jealousy: Whenever people post photos or even just write about going to Chipotle. Mmmm…

My legs haven’t been on their workout yet. We’ll see in about half an hour. ;-)

I used to tie my key into my shoes (I was obsessed with the possibility of losing it, so I’d take the lace out from the top hole, thread the key on, then re-thread the lace), then we moved into an apartment with a key AND a key card. So now I stick the whole shebang on a caribbeaner and clip it to/tuck it into my bra (not much else in there, so there’s plenty of room….). Just have to wash the dang thing off after every run to prevent salt accumulation. ;-)

Reply

My legs were kind of heavy today because of my weights class last night. My chest was also wheezy because I have a chest infection, but I’m super good at following rules and I workout anyway. So I’m just being really slow. I have an Armpocket armband and it has a key slot where you zip your key into it :D

Last time I went to TJ’s, I bought dark chocolate almonds, quinoa & black bean tortilla chips, vegetable root chips, and pepper jelly. The essentials ;) We don’t have a TJs on my side of the state, so I only buy the treats when I’m there visiting my friend.

Reply

I felt GREAT on my run today, and the whole time I was thinking, “I have no business feeling this good at this point in my training, what is going on!” (Last week was the last of many big mileage weeks in training for a 50-mile race.) I think it means that possibly for the first time ever I didn’t over-train/injure myself during training! I’m going to go with that anyways. :)

Reply

Wow!! I’m in total shock at how much a monthly budget is for a family of 2. I spend $150 a month. Not including out to eat. I have never been to Trader Joes. Though I would like to eventually, it’s just so far from my house. My workout yesterday was slow and tiring. Need to practice relaxing my legs while I run. :)

Reply

I felt great when I ran today, but now my calves are weirdly tight. My shins are pretty much sore 100% of my life, but my calves don’t usually get bothered :/ so now I’m spending some time with the tv and rolling. I think it was from the spin class this morning?

Your girl is just way too cute! I love those little baby gyms

There Aren’t may TJs close by, so I looooad up when I do go. My favorite thing is their cilantro dressing and the Thai dressing. Last time I bought 5 of each and the cashier made fun of me :(

Reply

My mom went to a catered party tonight so obviously I was super jealous. My workout today was not very good. My legs felt like bowling balls. I want to go to a Trader Joe’s so bad but I live in the middle of nowhere :(

Reply

I stick my key in my iphone holder. My legs felt great today. Usually on tuesday I feel terrible.

Reply

There is a couple different way to tie shoes so they don’t come undone. I just looked this one up today: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80JZCgxqfb0.

Reply

Well I went to the grocery store today and spent $80 on food! For 1 person for 1 week. I’m def doing something wrong!

Reply

I think I speak for most of your readers when I say that I feel food jealousy every single time I read your blog. Seriously.

I usually run from my house, so I don’t take a key. When I don’t do that I stick it in my shorts pocket or my hydration pack if it’s a long run. Or if I meet friends at the local running store I just stick them behind the counter.

Reply

I put my key on my shoelaces too! Or if I take my fuelbelt or water bottle I’ll put it in the little zipper.

Mmmmm Trader Joe’s! Last time I was there I stocked up on frozen fruit for smoothies. I love theirs because it’s so sweet and SO much cheaper than getting it anywhere else. Double win!

Reply

My legs were soooo heavy this am! Very slow run. And yes, my key looks just like that, double knotted to my shoe. With two boys in college, one in high school, my husband and myself, I would be embarrassed to tell you how much we spend on food. No trader joes here, so I have food envy just reading all the comments! I don’t think there s one anywhere in the state, but just the thought of cookie butter makes my mouth water……

Reply

I put my keys on my dogs collar or I don’t take them because we have a key pad on the back door so I can get in using that

Reply

I’m so glad you get power berries! I would have worried about you.

I just put my keys in my tights back pocket or a pocket somewhere. If I don’t have pockets, I loop it through my garmin or slide it in the back of my iPod arm band.

Reply

So happy to see that we fall in the low cost plan. I try to buy organic/cagefree/glitter fed/etc. as much as possible, so it’s nice to see that we’re on track (uhhh as long as you don’t count eating out.)

I’m eyeballin’ those Powerberries. I had to cut myself off. Those things are like crack!

Reply

I hate grocery budgets because I hate shopping and so it takes more time if I have to actually pay attention. My calves have been super tight too because I am trying to fix my form. It’s pretty tough to do. But it is getting easier and I spend a lot of time rolling them out, OUCH! I did take your advice and I have a coach. I am super excited mostly to be injury free and to see what I can do. Brooke is super cute!

Reply

What a cool chart, I fall between thrifty and low cost, woo! I tie my keys into my shoes laces also! And the last time I went to TJs I loaded up on fruit, vegetables (a crap ton of kale) and then the obligatory dark chocolate with whole hazelnuts bar. Mmm heaven.

Reply

Sometimes I put my key in my sports bra. sounds weird, but actually causes no problems!

Reply

I am happy to see my grocery budget is not excessive. We hardly ever go out to eat but entertain a lot so our grocery bill is always more with extra special food and cocktails to serve to friends. I can’t run anywhere no matter how short of a run without my water belt. When I am thirsty I am thirsty and I want it now. The pocket on the belt is perfect for my key. I am always envious of all of your froyo! We don’t have places like that are around me so this week I bought froyo at the grocery store and thoroughly enjoyed it while watched the Batchelorette on my DVR.

Reply

Your food always makes me want to make healthy delicious foods.

It was a hard 6 mile run on the treadmill this morning. I didn’t even run any random hills and it still was rough going.

I tie them into my laces too. Or I safety pin them to my shorts..Best yet is to hid them outside so I don’t have to run with keys!

Cheese at TJ’s.. They have the best selection at good prices!!

Reply

Apparently, we are well below the thrifty plan. How does that work?

That kids class looks like fun! I used to go to a kids “exercise”/play class when I was little while my mom worked out at the gym.

Reply

the best workout clothes are those with pockets for keys! But otherwise I tie them into my laces too! My strategy is to take one lace out of the last shoe-hole before threading through the key and then back into the shoe. That way i know that key is not going anywhere even if my shoes come untied :)
I started solely getting my bananas at TJ’s because if you take your time and use the large-banana strategy you can get lots of banana for cheap :) But every time i show up just for one thing I get distracted, Saturday I ended up walking away with cantaloupe, apricots, and oranges on top of my banana stash

Reply

I get jealous from pretty much everything I see around the blog world as far as meals because my area is so rural and doesn’t have anything out of the ordinary or good! Food jealousy to the extreme!

The last thing I ate from TJs was “Bananas… Flattened” and although it was just literally dried bananas… They tasted so good!

Reply

HaHa! I love that Brooke is in the center of the circle. You can tell that she’s going to be the life of the party when she grows up! :-)

We have a touch pad on our garage door so I usually don’t have to worry about my key. If I drive to my run, I have a key holder that attaches to my shoe laces that works great!

Reply

I ran yesterday and my legs did not want to move either! I hate when that happens!

I don’t shop at TJ’s…I know…you and the rest of the world probably think I’m crazy but it’s in a really crazy parking deck here and it stresses me out too much to go so I usually avoid it at all costs :)

If I am running at home I just put my keys in the mailbox or under our furniture on the porch…if I am going somewhere else to run I put the key in my sports bra :)

Oh fun, I was just at TJ’s last night too! I only got a few items though, like the bagged Brussels sprouts (to roast), grape tomatoes, and Parmesan cheese. I couldn’t get any frozen items because I was making a few more stops afterwards, unfortunately.

I am suffering from food jealousy right now as your post made me hungry for Pho! We have no pho places here and I don’t have the ingredients handy to make it at home. Waaaaaaaahhhh!

I found your blog a few weeks ago and have been enjoying it. Your daughter is adorable, and I’m excited by your goal of running a sub-3 hour marathon. I also have a daughter (15 months) and am trying to run sub-3 in October at St. George. A sub-3 marathon has been an on and off goal of mine since 2005 when I ran 3:09 in Chicago. Working with a coach is a great idea — I have a fabulous one right now. Anyway, I’m looking forward to seeing you work towards your goal. Good luck! Maybe 2013 will be the year for both of us. :)

It will be our year:) please keep me updated with your training!

How cute Brooke’s first group fitness class. I love it!
I am in the thrifty category for grocery budgets.

I always thought I overspent on groceries but I’m right in line with the average, so I guess that makes me feel better, ha! For two people I try to budget $60/week I am typically $20-$40 over, every week, hah.
