Spur of the Moment Decision

March 8, 2013

We found Brooke’s absolute favorite way to be held.

Pretty sure she giggled for 5 minutes straight.

We ran a few more errands and then when we got home I went to our apartment gym for 30 minutes on the elliptical.

After my long run last Friday (15 with the jogging stroller) my IT Band did not feel so hot.  I have never had any problems with my IT Band until recently and I am wondering if it is from doing long runs with the jogging stroller.  I think I must run differently or something with the stroller and so it is causing problems.  I don’t think I will attempt a super long run with the stroller for a while.  I was smart and took time off from running (this whole week) as soon as it started hurting and it feels so much better now.

Running resumes Monday.  Hallelujah.

After a short workout I came home and made some dinner.  We put spinach on the base of the plate and topped it with noodles, sauce, sautéed veggies, meatballs and parmesan cheese.

If you didn’t celebrate National Cereal Day we are in a fight.  We tried this new cereal for dessert and it was AMAZING.

As we were searching for camping gear yesterday I really thought we were just going to be lame and keep saying that we were going to become a camping family and never follow through with it.

We are doing it.

Packing up the house and going on an overnight backpacking camping trip today.

And we got the coat.  It was a must not just a want.  We bought it big enough to work for the next winter or two plus it was on sale.

DSC 9629

Just the three of us roaming around the mountains this weekend (oh and lots of wheat thins, apples and pb & j sandwiches).

PS thank you all for the REI recommendations… we went with them because of all of the great things you said about their customer service!  Oh and of course I am bringing my iPad so that I can post pictures while we are out… you can’t get rid of me that easily.

————————————————————————

Have you made any spur of the moment decisions recently?

Anyone ever experience random aches and pains from using the running stroller?

Have you had a good running week, a not so good running week or a nonexistent running week like me;)

What is going to be the absolute best part about your weekend?

Sarah @PickyRunner March 8, 2013 at 5:04 am

I used to have that jacket. Brooke and I can be twins. Too cute. You guys are going to have an absolute blast. I’m not good at camping. Too many bugs or something. It’s really smart that you took the full week off running. You’ll be happy you did when you’re able to keep running for months and years to come instead of a random week that your legs didn’t feel so hot.

So glad the it band is getting better! You were so smart to listen to your body. Running week has been ok. No crazy workouts just been running. We are seeing Tim McGraw in concert tonight so excited for that :-)

I’m just coming off a non-running week for phantom foot pain and was SO antsy (and maybe a little cranky). Much better now, though!

The best part of my weekend will either be my long run on the Boston Marathon course tomorrow morning, or daylight savings time on Sunday — FINALLY!

That mini-Patagonia coat is too much. Love it. I can’t wait to hear about your camping adventure! Have fun!

That is so fun! I’m sure you all will have a great time! I’m sorry to hear a out your IT band…I have been plagued with injuries and I know how scary it is when something starts hurting. I’m sure the rest helped out a lot. The best part of my weekend will be running with friends I haven’t seen in a while! I think chocolate will also be a big part of my weekend. I can’t wait to see camping pictures!

My latest spur of the moment decision was to buy that cereal yesterday! I just couldn’t pass it up on Cereal Day. And you’re right, it is delicious… one of my new favorites for sure!!
I’m leaving for Spring Break in Florida tomorrow so I’m veryyy excited about the warmth! And to be able to run outside, it’s been a rough winter here!

Hope you have an AWESOME time camping!

Yay for camping with kids! Also, REI IS the bomb. So is Patagonia, for that matter. They have a lifetime warranty. If you ever have an issue with anything, you can send it back to them to be fixed or replaced. Have fun!

My lower leg into my ankle was bothering me earlier this week then I got really sick so I forced to rest. I think it was good because it feels a lot better but I’ll need to look into why it might have started up in the first place. We are going to Niagara Falls this weekend!!! I am super excited! We’ll leave tonight after Jess gets off work.

I love spur of the moment trips! They are hard for me to do (2 jobs), but they are awesome when they do occur. Good call on taking off from running. I’m just getting back into it after an injury and am grateful that I let myself fully heal. It’s amazing how much more appreciative I am of being able to run post injury!

My foam roller was my BFF when my IT band flared up. Hurts like hell, but does the trick to loosen things up.
I have a full marathon coming up in 15 days, and running has been a little lacking. This week, I guess I can call it tapering… but my training log looks like I’ve been tapering the past 3 weeks! Oh well. I’m not fast. I just run to finish. My kind-of coach says I should be fine, since I was consistent with running from November through the beginning of February, so we’ll see.

I haven’t done anything too spontaneous lately…Camping sounds like a great idea!
My shoulders killed after the first time I ran a race with a jogging stroller – it was pulling me to the left the whole time so I had to keep pushing forward harder with my left and pulling back with my right arm. It was awful!
It has been a good running week so far. My running week ends Sunday night, so we’ll see how many more miles I can get in between now and then!
The best part of my weekend is going to be watching my little guy at his swim class! He is doing so well :)

I have the same jacket as Brooke in adult size and it is single handedly one of the best pieces of Patagonia I own (and I own an embaressing amount). Im expecting baby #1 right now, a boy, and that jacket in dark blue is on my list of “I will die if I don’t get this for my son” items.

REI is the best for camping supplies. We’re avid backpackers often going on 30 mile treks and we registered at REI when we got married and still backpack with a lot of hte things we were gifted. They are awesome!

I’m obsessed with the BOB stroller and can’t wait to use it when baby gets here and I can run a little faster again. Glad you like yours but sad that it might be making your IT Band hurt :(

Running with a jogging stroller is totally different, you lean more forward, you don’t use your arms as much, and you’re pushing more than gliding, so take it easy with the thing!

I wish we could go camping this weekend! It’s to cold here, but my kiddos would adore it! Have fun! Double sleeper Brooke so she doesn’t freeze!

I’ve had a pretty good running week, but I’ve taken more days off too since my 15 miler. It was my first one, and it took my legs a lot longer to recover than I had thought they would. I think it was the combo of running long and outside. I’ve been doing a lot of running on the treadmill.

Yes, I did experience some aches and pains from the jogging stroller at first. I ended up lifting the handle a bit and that helped. Plus – when I’m really going, I tend to just push the stroller and then catch up to it – then push again. I do have a strap on the stroller so it is not like Max is in it going “weeeeeee” down a hill or anything ;-)

Since I have stopped running with the jogging stroller I have had no pain since. Fingers crossed. I actually had a good running week. I ran all the days I was suppose to according to my training plan.

Yoga, yes, do yoga to help the IT band. Have fun camping!! I can’t wait to read about how it went and where you go. Always looking for new places to explore :)

Brooke is so cute! I swear, y’all are going to have a very hard time saying no to that face when she gets older! Hope y’all have a great time on your camping trip!!

I actually have had a really good running week, so far. I usually eat my lunch sometime betwen 11am and noon and then I’d get home from work and go running (heading out sometime between 5 and 6pm) without a snack, and I was always feeling sluggish and tired. This week I started eating a small snakc, such as a granola bar, 10-15 minutes before my run and it has made a world of difference!

My IT Band problems began shortly after I had my first child. My orthopedist said it was a common problem after pregnancy. Roll, roll roll!

Janae, I didn’t read they all the comments but #1 Brooke is ADORABLE!! #2 I bet the sway of your hips for power since you can’t use your arms with the jogger is messing with your IT band! Get better!

Have you made any spur of the moment decisions recently? – Upped my 26.2 mile run to this weekend!

Have you had a good running week, a not so good running week or a nonexistent running week like me;) – A good one. Especially now that I have a Nordic Track C900. Thanks to you for having one! I wouldn’t have probably chose this one if it wasn’t for you talking it up!

What is going to be the absolute best part about your weekend? – Finishing my first marathon distance run! Tomorrow! Woo!!!

HAVE A GOOD CAMPING TRIP!

I am building my running back up after having sinusitis and bronchitis.
I am hoping that I can get in an LSD on Saturday close to 20 miles.

Soo cute! :) p.s meant to tell you I ran my first marathon after your advise for trainig completely on a treadmill! It was awesome! Only slightly existent running week. Out of nowhere, my plantar fascia (NEVER had a problem with it before) decides it’s totally unhappy. Now I, too, am totally unhappy.

Lose, lose.

Lots of rolling, icing, foot strengthening. BAH.

Best part of my weekend? Husband isn’t working, so I’m making him hang out with me all. day. today. Whee! :)

Hi Janae,
Just thinking about your IT band/running stroller issue. IT band pain is aggravated when, during your stride, your knee is bent and your lower leg/foot is flung behind you. The further back your leg flings, the more likely the iliotibial (IT) band is to rub across your knee joint and cause friction and pain. Sometimes you can even hear a pop at a certain point if the swelling is built up enough. I bet that when you run with the stroller, you lean forward slightly to push it…. resulting in your knees being more below/behind your body (rather than in front of your body) and your legs flinging further back, irritating the IT band. So I think your theory makes sense! I’m not sure how to push a stroller while running without leaning forward though… good luck!

Love the jacket~
Leaving Flagstaff for a (possibly) treacherous drive through snow to make it down to sunny (and a little chilly) Phx for the weekend.
I’m weaning myself back onto running after my first marathon a week ago!

Telling the truth here: I think pushing the stroller while running was my undoing :( It was when my son was about 5 mos old and I just started back running that I experience a weird hip thing. I know that I ran differently when pushing that thing. First of all, there’s no arm swing. Secondly, your posture is different.

Also remember that at some point postpartum, you will experience hormone shifts. One of those is relaxin leaving your body. All that was loosey goosey is suddenly stranded in tightness. I really hope you feel better soon. Be careful!

oh no!!! I’m so sorry!! I’ve had IT band problems and I didn’t deal with them right away and now I have had them off and on for four years- I would google some info and maybe go to a physical therapist to get some tips on why and how to adjust your running with the stroller! IT bands are a beast!! (if in pain- I guess their good when they’re working right ;)) ps: I reeeeaaaallly miss taking cycling from you!!! No one is the same!! But I guess it’s cool that you stopped since they stopped classes at the provo gym, and you moved to cali and everything-anyway glad to see everything looks like it’s going so well in cali and Brooke is absolutely adorable!! I bet you’re such a great Mom!!!

I feel your pain! Just got home from a crappy crappy 10 miler with a screaming IT band from mile 3 on. Ugh….frustration.
Love Brooke’s piggies too!!
Also, been wondering about that cereal now I know it’s a definite must.
Happy camping and can’t wait for some pics.!!!

My most recent spur of the moment decision was going to the midnight premiere of Oz, like four hours before hand. Afterwards, I made a spur of the moment decision to stay up until 4:30 a.m. playing Mario Party with my friends. Yeah. Good thing I don’t have Friday classes.

Brooke’s little coat looks so cute! Why do little kid clothes always look so much cuter then grown-up clothes? I swear, every time I walk in Target and see the little kid clothes, I wish I had friends who had babies so I can justify buying one of the cute little sparkly outfits as a gift (because there will be no baby for me for a looooooong time).

Have a good weekend!

Hi Janae! I love camping/backpacking and rei, I’m so excited you are getting into it! Just a suggestion, not sure if anyone said this to you yet, but buy an rei membership. In addition to the benefits if it, A couple times a year they do a “garage sale” where they sell everything that has been returned, some things barely used at all, and they sell it for SO cheap. I got barefoot shoes for $10 and hiking boots for like $20. It is totally worth it! You have to get there really early, or do like I did with friends and slept in a tent outside the store. Loads of fun and loads of cheap camping gear! :)

I will never get over how absolutely adorable Brooke is! A couple of weeks ago I decided last minute to go skiing with my friend for the weekend-it was awesome! My running week has been…interesting. Each run I went on I was fighting really high winds, including running during winter storm Saturn, so it was pretty frustrating at points when i was pushing really hard but the wind was pushing harder so I was basically running in place! The best part of my weekend was last night when I went to my brother’s house and we played a local card game called Pitch for five hours straight. The worst part was losing in the championship round! haha! Have fun on your camping trip! Me and my family used to go all the time when I was younger; it was always so much fun! I hope you packed ingredients to make s’mores!

I had to get different shoes for stroller running. I definitely run differently. I can’t even duplicate my stride without the stroller. I went to a local running shop and had them watch me with the stroller to give me advice and shoe suggestions. I think it made a huge difference. Good luck and take care of those speedy legs.
