Rules of conquering the gym and a lot of random stuff.

1.  I got in a few miles today!  I am kind of lost on what to think…. I felt the pain a little bit (not enough to stop) for the first few minutes but once I was warmed up it was gone?  Silly legs.  My treadmill is even dustier than usual since it has been so long since I had spent time with her.

2.  I have been compexing like a CHAMP to get me through this injury asap.  I really love this thing.

3.  I have a strong love for Target jeans and their baby clothes too.

4.  Has anyone tried these muffins before?  I saw them at the store and I really want to try them but I need to hear that they are amazing before I buy them.

5.   I have no idea how to decorate but all I can think about is how excited I am to decorate Brooke’s room when we move to the two bedroom apartment.  I am thinking I want a lot of pink, purple and glitter. If you are good at this kind of stuff please comment with any cheap tricks/tips/websites/pinterest thingees for nursery decorating my way so that we can make Brooke’s room the coolest place ever.  She deserves it after having to share a room with us for so long.

6.  My brother sent me this article a few weeks ago called 25 Rules for Conquering the Gym and I just had to share my favorites with you.

-‘Avoid gyms next to Cinnabons.’

-‘Here’s a helpful rule of gym clothing.  If you’re not sure your shirt smells?  Your shirt smells.’  Oops.

-‘The most intimate, personal thing on anyone’s phone is the WORKOUT JAM TUNES MIX.’

-‘Wow, you really just took a phone call in a spin class, amazing.’  PS I have never seen this happen before?  Is that common?  I love the guys face in the blue shirt.

OB WL176 gym022 G 20130221165716

-‘Make sure to read every gym contract carefully.  That gym you signed up for in 1989, in the city where you used to live?  Check your credit card statement.  You’re still paying $12.99 a month through 2092’

-‘Everyone looks good doing dumbbell curls in the mirror.  That’s why people do dumbbell curls in the mirror.  But do other stuff, too:)’

HAPPY PI DAY!!!

Any rules to add to the Gym Rules?

I love the clothing smell one. I’m definitely guilty of it myself. Recently, I’ve become a big fan of Target clothing. A) It’s cheap B) It fits really well C) It’s Target so it gives me an excuse to peruse for hours and hours.

I’ve randomly been thinking about why doves bob their heads when they walk but no other birds do…

I love love love Target clothing, and makeup, and home goods, and groceries… I can’t go in there too often. I always spend way too much!

Reply

Um rule number one I have to say I disagree with WHOLEHEARTEDLY!!! Gyms next to cinnabons are the only ones I consider joining!!! Oh target. We have a love/hate relationship for the obvious reasons. And also random but forever 21 has every color of jeans you can think of for cheap! I just got bright blue and yellow (2 separate pairs not one.) GO THERE!

-’The most intimate, personal thing on anyone’s phone is the WORKOUT JAM TUNES MIX.’
^hahah so true! keeping that one for my eyes only :)

Reply

Avoid the one next to Cinnabon is totally a good one. Reminds me of how my dentist is beside subway and I would always hate leaving the dentist and smelling subway, and knowing I wouldn’t be able to eat it for 30 mins!!!

Reply

I want a cinnabon!

A few weeks ago I had a really bad pain where my knee hurt to straighten. I started my run thinking I would go easy and if it hurt I would stop. It hurt a little in the beginning but then felt better. I went 8 miles that day. You run faster and further than me. But try it if it goes away keep going. If it hurts longer or worse stop.

Follow your instincts

Regarding Brooke’s room, it’s best to start off by looking at a few things: total amount you are willing to spend, needs of the room (e.g. storage, play, etc.), items that you are willing to purchase vs. make, items that might be donated or gifted to you, and design preferences.

From there, jot ideas down, discuss with Billy, ask Brooke her thoughts, and continue to figure out what works best for you and your family within the designated space.

Oh, and yes, I love Target clothes. Recently we found a dress for under $3 for Susanna for this upcoming Christmas. We realized later it was a nightgown, but you cannot tell. She’ll be wearing it with white tights this December!

My hub and I love their adult clothes, too, and they have held up for a long time!

Reply

Hehehehe – ask Brooke her thoughts, cute!

Reply

Hahah. Those are some awesome tips!

Yay for decorating another room. You’ll have a blast doing that I am sure. i think purple is a great color :)

Reply

I’ve never bought that mix, but I did make a cinnamon toast crunch cupcake recipe complete with homemade buttercream frosting (From Pinterest) for my ex boyfriends birthday before they came out with these boxed mixes. That experiment was delicious.

Gym rule: Do not get on the machine directly next to a person if there are approximately zero other people on the other machines.

I love Target clearance ! Their workout clothes are super fun!!

Reply

How about the rule that apparently in order to look super awesome lifting weights, you need a shirt that started as a t-shirt, had the sleeves and collar cut off and are probably cut in a few other places too.

Yay for getting back to running!

Reply

I wear a LOT of Target clothing… from running to their dresses (which are always really cute) to their work clothes. I’m a huge fan… but who isn’t a lover of TARGET?!

Reply

You should buy her a chandelier for her room. ;) We found a white and pink one at Lowe’s that my husband installed and I love it. It makes the room so girly!!

Reply

I am a member of 24hour fitness. I signed up when it was super cheap so I am keeping it and hoping that they expand to the Midwest sometime in the next decade.

Reply

Love Target. Their funky socks are my favorite.

Also I think there should be a rule that slow walkers cannot hog the treadmill talking on their phones! Aghhhh.

Reply

I just bought flamingo kneesocks, whale kneesocks, and I LOVE(am obsessed) with their $5 tights!

Reply

Ha! The best part is that they are all true! I love lists like these!!

Reply

What injury are you suffering from, I think I missed something? Unless it’s an old injury that you have that’s bothering you and hope your ok. My knee hurt last night the second I hit the pavement so I did one hour on my elliptical instead.

Lets see I’ve been using myfitnesspal for counting calories and I really like it.

Reply

Thank you!!! Just having some it band issues:(

Reply

I do most of my clothes shopping at Target, and I’m not ashamed to say it!

Reply

Wait… what!? Cinnamon Toast Crunch muffin mix?! I’ve never seen that one before, but I’d snatch it up in a heartbeat if I ever came across it. Given the amazingness of the cereal, I can’t imagine it being anything less than amazing. As for Target, I’ve never been in one so I can’t vouch for the clothing, but we’ve got our first one opening up here this spring and I can’t wait to check it out.

Reply

Omheck, I am ALWAYS playing the “does this shirt smell?” game when I pack my gym bag! Unfortunately I think I baked the smell into my shirts in the dryer! 2013 is not my year for new shirts… maybe 2014.. eveyone will just have to suffer 9 more months lol. Maybe I’ll try that detergent that is supposed to help stinky gym stuff.. whatever that is… lol

Reply

I LOVE Target!!! It’s hard for me to stick to my list when I go shopping there.
And I got the lifetime membership to 24 Hour Fitness, which means I now pay 27 bucks per month. They don’t offer it anymore, so I’m glad I got it when they used to have it!

Hi Janae! I have been reading your blog for a while and your love for running is so encouraging! I love to run too, but don’t quite get in the miles you do! I have 2 little ones and take them in my jogger but 50 lbs of kid and growing making my runs tougher and tougher! Plus it’s already 90 degrees in Phoenix! :)

A cute nursery idea that I just did in my 3 year olds room is I did her name in cute white wooden letters in the middle and took sewing looms (really cheap at hobby lobby or michaels) and glued fabric swatches into the center. I am not sure how to link to where I found this on Pinterest. So I did different size looms with different fabrics and it prob cost me about $20. I have a pic from my daughters room. Let me know if you are interested and I can send it to you!

Brooke is precious! My little guy is just a little older than she is! Such a fun age!

Sorry for the novel! :)

I have some exercises that will kick that IT band problem in the butt, if you want to try them. That, stretching and foam rolling should have you back to normal in a couple of weeks!

Reply

Send them on over!!!!!!!!!

With all this advice people are giving about IT bands…can you share with the rest of us? You already know this but Brooke is too cute. And I am terrible at decorating so I have no ideas there.

Reply

I sent you an email!

Reply

“Be prepared for people stares when you get off the treadmill and leave it running while you do another exercise and hop back on”

Happens too much! I’ll get off to add push ups, squats, etc and I get stares!

I do not belong to a gym anymore, but I did for a long time!

Reply

I made the cinnamon toast muffins a few months ago. The muffin part was okay but really nothing special and the topping was just ehhh. I’m pretty sure you could whip up a better version yourself!

Reply

Thank you for letting me know!

Reply

We used to be gym members but since we moved to California I can’t justify it – the weather is so good I’d rather be outside. I would like the classes though, but I tend just to run!

Hope you mend soon.

Reply

I’ve never seen anyone answer their phone in spin class but one of my instructors does have a rule that if you check your phone in class, and he catches you, you have to sprint for 30 seconds while everyone else watches.

And….now I really want to go clothes shopping at Target! :-)

Reply

Target clothes… LOVE! Actually Everything I’m wearing right now except my VS Pink sweatshirt might be from Target.
Room decor idea (for Brooke): If you want wall art that you can change as she grows, you can get plain canvases (I like the square ones) at an art/craft store and paint them in whatever theme and colors you want. It way cheaper and much cuter (I think) than framed art from a store… plus unique so none of her baby friends can steal her style, you know :)? I hung them with ribbons. I was trying to attach a pic, but I can’t seem to do it. My girls have pink and purple and glitter too. It’s the “Princess Room.”

Reply

I’ve really been wanting to try those muffins too. So, curious how they are?

Reply

I love Target!! We are getting them in Canada finally this Spring, and i.am.pumped

As for Brooke’s decor…i would check out wwe.etsy.com there are cute wall decals and stuff on there that would be really cute :)

Oh my goodness. This one cracked me up:

15. Everybody has Gym Friends, people they know only from the gym. This is important and humanizing. You may have accomplished great and sophisticated things in the outside world, but to them, you’re just The Weird Guy Who Jumps Rope Like A Goat.

And I love, love, love Target. I’m on a tight budget and am in love with their super affordable but super cute clothes.

Reply

I did a cereal muffin taste test at work. I made the cinnamon toast crunch, cocoa puffs and Reese’s muffins. Reese won followed by cocoa puffs. I had high hopes for ctc. I thought it would have cereal pieces for the topping…it didn’t. They were good but they were just a cinnamon muffin. Not worth the price.

Can’t wait to see how you decorate Brooke’s room!! Having her own bedroom will be such a treat!

Reply

baha I seriously never experienced anyone answer a call in a spin class, I couldn’t even imagine! thats so ridiculous
I have a gym membership, the staff there sucks but its cheap and the equipment works, so i’m going with it for now!

Reply

Ummm not going to a gym next to a Cinnabon sounds like a terrible idea to me. How else will I refuel?! You need to try those muffins and do a full review of them :) I trust your judgement for all things dessert or baked goods. Oh and target has the best everything. Especially bathing suits

Reply

I love Target EVERYTHING!

I actually have two gym memeberships! The first I have is close to my house and is an Anytime Fitness. It’s super convient and I only pay 30 bucks a month (kinda pricy, but could be worse!). Then I have one through work and I pay 5 bucks a month (total 35 for both!) and this one is all inclusive. Classes, equipment (obviously), and childcare. They are even getting a pool and basketball court! I go to this one in the am for spin and P90X classes and Saturdays before the Bebe’s have gymnastics since I can take them and their gymnastics is on the first level! Super convient! And btw…I LOVE Target clothes. And Target everything! Woot woot!

My picky son LOVES those muffins….a definite must try!

I had someone take a call in a Spin class I was teaching once . . . I got off my bike, walked over, took the phone, said very sweetly, “I’m so sorry, she’s taking a Spinning class right now. She’ll call you back later,” and hung up. If you MUST take a call, TAKE IT OUTSIDE.

I used to have a gym membership and have been wanting to get one again but just being cheap right now lol can’t wait to see Brooke’s room! You can’t go wrong with pink glitter :)

Joined the gym in January and love it! I have seen some super cute decorations at HomeGoods! They have plenty of things for boys and girls!!

That is good that the pain went away!! I hope that you heal up fast and that you can be done with the injury. Friggin IT band injuries suck with ‘explosive strength’. Seriously. I can’t stop laughing that that is an option on your Compex. Those 2 words together rock my socks. In other news, I am an 11 year old boy.

I love teal and a bright/soft orange together for a babies room. Or A salmony pink and robin egg blue. I want to redo Anna’s room with those colors. But she insists we do her room painted in stripes – the colors of the rainbow and put hearts all over. Soooo ya. How do I even find a happy medium with that?

Those jeans look super cute. And super 80’s Is there a zipper on the side with a bow on the top? I so had some like that in elementary. I have to avoid going into the clothes section or I want everything for me or my kids…but I also want everything in the dollar bin section…and the food or seasonal isle too…basically I should just avoid Target.

I have mentioned my feelings for my rec center lately. I used to sing praises, but I am annoyed and bored. I have been loving my free wee at this bootcamp place. You pay month to month there and even though I have already paid for my rec center membership until January, I might do a month after my free week is up at this bootcamp place because I am loving the change of pace for me.

Reply

Pi Day!! I just spent too long searching for places where they might give free pie an I got nothing. So disappointed

Those are def great tips haha I used to go to a gym before I had Jackson, now I have some weights, Dvds and a treadmill so I can do most of my workouts at home.

Reply

I have no idea what Cinnabon is, but it sounds like sugary baked goods. Possibly with added icing. Mmmmmmm…

Reply

I’m having a similar injury experience- it hurts more when I am NOT running!

As I’ve mentioned a million times before, I am Target OBSESSED. Everything there is fantastic!

I finally joined a gym, so I found this too funny! I’ve always just worked out at home, but our apartment is small and I decided it’s time to bite the bullet!

I’ve seen a lady text through the entire length of a spin class. Very annoying since she was right in front and the glow of the light was in my face. :\

I have a 24 hour gym membership. I use it frequently, especially for classes and enjoy going. I’ve had one for about 4 years now :) Though I would really want a yoga studio membership. i miss the studio :(

randomness: why do i get allergy symptoms on the left side of my face only?? it just hit me around 3pm and I have gone through have a tissue box. ugh.

Okay, those jeans are amazing!! I need some super light blue denim, tooooo! Target, here I come. Thanks, Janae, you’re such an enabler!! ;) Also, no gym membership for me! I like the outdoors/my home to be my gym. It’s free, too, which is a nice bonus!

I’ve never had anyone take a call in a Spin class I’m in. I do sometimes go to one over lunch, and a few of the professionals keep their Blackberrys nearby and check them a few times. VERY occasionally, I’ve seen someone step out to make a call/deal with some issue, presumably.

However, I was in a class one night last week when a girl was obviously playing games on her phone. The instructor (a totally laid back guy) called her out: “You’re here to work out with the group. If you want to play on your phone, there are spin bikes out on the gym floor.” I almost cheered. I get kinda peevish when someone takes up previous space in a group class, and isn’t really taking full advantage.

I’m kinda curious: As an instructor, what’s your view on phones in class? Does time of day matter? Does apparent activity on phone (Blackberry for email vs playing games) matter?

I’ve always done well finding kids room decor on ebay. I found super cheap glittery dragonflies there that I hung on inexpensive hooks and fishing line…so they “flew” around from the ceiling in one corner of the room. I also bought a stuffed animal seagull off and hung that bad boy up the same way in my son’s surfing-themed room . Hanging stuff gives a fun 3-D effect for not a lot of money!

Reply

Along the lines of the dragonflies… I saw an idea of taking butterflies and glueing (gluing? how do you spell that) to the wall like they are flying in a little flock of butterflies flying out the window. I’ve seen lace and net butterflies in Micheals craft stores.
Here is the where I saw the idea:

I LOVE Targets clothes! I also like Forever 21, as it fits my tiny budget.

I suffer some IT issues myself. It comes and goes. I won’t feel it for weeks and then all of a sudden, it’s there! I feel it throughout the day/night, and in the first few minutes of a run. Then it subsides the rest of the run and comes back after I’m done. It is triggered by upped mileage and speed. I try to back off when it gets bad (if it doesn’t go away after 1-3 days) and run less and run slower. That works for me. I’ve also found a few killer stretches to do that make it feel much better.

When the IT band first flared up, I didn’t know what it was and kept running and running until it was so bad that I was limping in daily life. I ended up taking 1.5 months off, doing no exercise, and then cautiously got back into running. I saw a PT who gave me some exercises to do to strengthen the hips using a resistance band, which helps the IT.

The IT band is pesky. I feel like it never goes away, really. It pops up again and again… bummer, but its manageable!!

I am sure that your husband will love being twinners with you! I, too, share in your love of everything Target. Seriously, I cannot go in there without spending at least $50 and I MUST look at the sale rack. I love their sale rack. Gets me every. single. time!

If you are not sure where THAT smell is coming from, it is probably coming from you!
Yes, I have a gym membership. And I use it anywhere from 3-8 times a week.
Random thought: putting the same people in a different location doesn’t get a different result. Just a different background.

LOVE the thing about not answering calls during spin class. I’ve never seen that but there is a group of people that come once in a while and listen to their iPods during the class and don’t do A THING the instructor says…very frustrating to say the least. I think it’s just plain rude. Can spin instructors kick people out?!

Reply

I absolutely love Target clothing… I cannot leave the store without spending at least $50 so I try to stay away!

I am so annoyed when people talk on the phone in the gym…you are there to workout your body, not your mouth :-).

Reply

I spent some quality time at Target today and came home with a new pair of jeans and a neon cheetah-print bra – it was only $3.50, how could I resist?!?!

Reply

I had a membership at the Y in my area and loved it but I’m moving now and can’t wait to hit up the one in my new town. Fingers crossed it’s as good! And I totally agree with the intimacy of the ‘Workout Jams Mix’. I listen to music when I run that I would NEVER be caught listening to any other time. My boyfriend will probs have have a cow when he finds that one!

I just bought two dresses from Target today! It was a complete impulse run, but totally worth it :D

Hilarious!! A friend sent me that link this morning and I just wrote a post about it. My fav rule is the taking a phone call in spin class. This probably happens in my class 2x a week!! I just keep cranking up the music until they get the message to get off their phone. Here’s a great story….I actually had a women take a call during my sculpt class and asked me to turn the music down!!! It was her decorator on the phone and she was having to decide between two shades of green for her kitchen!! I cranked the music up and pointed at the door. Ridic!!!

Have you seen this Magic Munch recipe?! It’s a candy, Lucky charms, trail mix sort of recipe. I think you might love it!
http://www.bakerella.com/magic-munch/

My girls and I belong to our local Y. We have been members for 7 years, I think. Before that I had a single gym membership at a 24 Hour Fitness. I have found the Y to be a lot more family-friendly.

Target has adorable clothes for all ages!

Reply

I have to say, the first thing that popped in to my mind when I saw those jeans was “I wonder if they have any like that at Old Navy…” I’m as obsessef with Old Navy as everyone else seems to be with Target! That may have something to do with the fact that I live closer to an Old Navy…hmmm, either way, it’s bye-bye pocket money!

Random thought I had at the gym today (which I pay for my membership to, recently joined, and am ABSOLUTELY LOVING, mostly for their GroupPower classes, the closes thing to Body Pump I’ve found in Olathe): do other people think about how awkward their butt must look taking step after step after step on the Stair Master? Because I couldn’t get the thought out of my head, and surely I can’t be the only one?

Brooke is adorable! And would even more adorable doused in pink and purple glitter. Maybe not even the room – just her. I’m thinking all white rooms with an entire sequined wardrobe? Mull it over…!

Reply

I love that you can get things at Old Navy that are totally adorable at great prices. They also have lots of sizes to fit all kinds of body shapes and sizes. I’m super tall so that is helpful for me.

Reply

I now have a new favorite picture of Brooke! Is she always that happy?

I work at a gym so I get a free membership there, and I see clients in my home and have a decent gym setup here.

Reply

Yes! Target jeans (and tank tops and cardigans) are THEEE BEST! I used to wear crazy expensive fancy jeans from a specialty shop in San Francisco, but one day I picked up an $11 pair of Target clearance jeans and they are my new favorites. Way better than gap or Banana Republic or such places, great fit and quality. I also have a serious addiction to their tank tops and cardigans and wear both almost every day. Love me some Tar-jay!!

Reply

Literally EVERY SINGLE THING in my closet. Where else can you get cheap, cute clothes, toilet paper and bananas?? It’s a one stop shop. It is definitely my second home.

Those gym rules are HILARIOUS. My work is really awesome and pays for its employees membership at the local gym, so it was how I kept up with running when it was too dark or too cold out to run, and it’s where I go for cross training and a few classes now that it’s warm enough to run outside every day.

Gym pet peeves: excessive locker room nakedness and taking the elevator when you are capable of walking up the stairs.

Spot on with the workout playlist. Sometimes, I’m all whatever gets me running i don’t care what you think! An others I’m all oh please no one look at my running playlist!!!

One of my fav ways to get inspiration for rooms is to look at Pottery Barn / PBKids. The color combinations are really nice and they have some great ideas (and then I try to find cheaper versions – HA).
My sister did a purple and white them in her daugthers room (with mirrored butterflies) and I loved it.
If/when we have a little girl, my plan is to do yellow, white, and grey in her room!
PS. I love target.

Whenever I am having a bad day I use my lunch break to go to Target. Which I end up finding a reason to go in there a lot. and since the ones here now have a grocery section that means I go in there at least 3 times a week…yikes!

Hahaha I love those gym rules, funny and true! I joined a gym about 2.5 years ago when I moved here to Chicago and the weather started making a turn for the worse! Defintiely learned the ins and outs of big gym membership… And Gina on Fitnessista did a post recently about her little girl’s room!

I joined Planet Fitness about 4 months ago. First I joined for the $10/month deal and then I bumped it up to $20…I couldn’t resist Water Massage Bed usage! Love it! I’m in a new city and the roads are all crazy so I feel a lot safer using a treadmill…although I’m sure I’ll make use of the High School Track across the street!
I’ve been a part of a gym twice before…and it was SOOO expensive and I never went…so this is a nice change! Cheap and I actually go! :)

Omg. I love Target clothes! They have such cute things! It’s totally one of my go to places! :)

I have tried the Cinnamon Toast Crunch muffins and they are yummy! There are pretty hard bits in the streusel topping, though – one of my kids thinks they are TOO hard, but whatever – I liked them. :)

There is are certain people I try to dodge at the gym. One girl likes to talk entirely too much. Once, she tapped me on the shoulder (because I had my ear buds in) in the middle of a run on the treadmill just to ask me where I got my shoes. This one guy (who wears tight jeans, tight black shirts, fancy shoes, and loads of hair gel) thought he would give me tips on how to do free weights. Ummm, I’ve been going to this gym a lot longer than you sir….perhaps I should’ve given him tips on appropriate gym attire. He also runs on the treadmill in his Jersey Shore get-up.

I love the smelly clothes rule – I wish people at my gym knew about it. I’d like to add a grunting rule. I understand that guys grunt when they’re pressing 1,000 pounds, but SERIOUSLY?! Keep that noise to a minimum.

I’ve had a gym membership since January and love being able to keep running. I live in Nebraska, so I’m not lucky enough to be able to run outside all year round!

Those Cinnamon Toast Crunch muffins look AMAZING!

My gym is in the same parking lot as a burger king, ice cream place and a chinese restaurant.

I’ve never seen someone take a phone call in a spin class, but yesterday I went to the gym to run on the treadmill and both of them were full. (It is a small gym and there are only two) On one of them was a girl walking very slowly and talking on her cell phone. Grrr! Is it just me, or is that really bad gym etiquette?

I have a gym membership to Snap Fitness because it’s only $49.99 for both the hubs and myself and you can cancel at any time…which won’t be happening, but it’s just nice to have that :) It’s a 24 hour gym too!

I LOVE TARGET!!!!

Target has some really cute girl bedding (that’s where I got my daughter’s stuff). Buying online will give you more options as well. Good luck!
