I feel very left out.

February 9, 2013

Saturday mornings are our favorite.   Even though we can no longer sleep in (long time readers may remember that pre-brooke I would sleep in until 11 a.m. on Saturdays) we still stay in bed for as long as possible and hang out.  Brooke especially loves this tradition.

We finally got our running stuff together and drove to the park that we always park at to jump on the trail.

I feel SO left out.

There was a 5k/10k going on and I had no idea about it.  I have been wanting to race a 10k so badly and this one was approximately really close to our house and the weather was perfect.  We got there right at the end… I am embarrassed at how upset I was about missing out.

Luckily the three of us had a pretty good run together.

DSC 7894

We did a total of 7 miles in a little less than an hour.  I really wanted to make sure that I took it nice and easy because Friday’s run was tough stuff. for me.

And now we are eating minestrone soup (I swear it gets better everyday) and peanut butter pretzels.

Hope you are having a relaxing weekend and those of you dealing with all of that snow….. STAY WARM and drink lots of hot chocolate!

Katie @ msfitrunner February 9, 2013 at 1:58 pm

That is torture for a runner! I don’t blame you – I would have probably cried if there was a race going on that I didn’t know about. At least you got a great run in with your adorable little fam:) My saturdays start bright and early too – like 5:30-6am, and my little guy does not like to cuddle in bed, he likes to get up and GO!:) Have a great weekend!!

Elizabeth @ My Neon Running Shoes February 9, 2013 at 1:59 pm

Sleeping in is such a thing of the past. Ah well… I guess it’s worth it ;-) Peanut butter pretzels rock. The sad part about them is that they last about 27 minutes after I buy a bag!

Katie February 9, 2013 at 2:00 pm

Aww Brooke’s smile!! So sweet! And you’re adorable for feeling left out of the 10k!

P.s. hot chocolate is in the plans for tonight :)

No snow here. Quite the opposite: my plants are all sending out buds for Spring! Here’s hoping we don’t get any more frost! I ran about 9km/5.5miles this AM and then promptly decided that I need a Garmin. I’ve been using the Nike Running app on my iPhone and it seems to get more inaccurate each time I use it. Do you (or anyone) know if Garmins ever go on sale?

Reply

The Hungry Runner Girl February 9, 2013 at 2:20 pm

No way… that is awesome! Great job on your run. YES, they do go on sale. They don’t put the new ones on sale but you can find some good deals at Costco or try buying one refurbished.

Amy @ Writing While Running February 9, 2013 at 4:29 pm

Um. I love that you buy your Garmins at Costco, too.

Oh, I can so relate to feeling left out today! I was supposed to run a half marathon this morning and have been looking forward to it for months. Unfortunately, I woke up with strep throat — painfully sore throat, fever/chills, headache and an entire body of aches and pains. I had some friends that ran it and did awesome, though, so at least I can be happy for them while I’m here in bed…

It is so beautiful where you live!!

Reply

The Hungry Runner Girl February 9, 2013 at 2:21 pm

Kristen, I am so so sorry about your strep throat. That is so awful. Is there another one that you can sign up for soon so you can use all of your training for?!

Reply

Kristen @ Happy Running Mama February 14, 2013 at 2:04 pm

No other half-marathons that work with my schedule but I’m running a 15K on St. Patty’s Day. My goal race isn’t until April (Boston) so in the grand scheme of things, I would definitely rather be sick for a half-marathon than for my goal marathon race!

Bummer about the race! It looks so warm and pretty there!

Hey! I just wanted to let you know that I have read through all of your posts from the beginning (I am a creeper, I know!) and I love you! You are hysterical and so relatable! I feel like I just finished a really great book and now that I have to wait for new blog posts it is torture! My friend told me about your blog and now that I’ve read your story I feel like I know you and your family! I have had issues in the past with disordered eating and compulsive exercising and marrying the perfect man/having a baby/running has completely changed my life! Just wanted you to know how much I love hearing about your family, your recipes, your running, and everything in between! :)

Hot chocolate is something I can do. If rather run 7 miles with my fam than a Race. Although even better would be a race WITH my family.

Come down to Pacific Grove tomorrow (about an hour south of you) and run the Valentines 10k!! It’s seriously such a beautiful run along the water and the weather down here has been beautiful! I usually run it every year but since I’m giving birth in two days I decided to opt out haha

TWO DAYS!!! I am so excited for you. Congratulations! I might have to talk Billy into this Vday 10k!

I felt like I was missing out on something this morning because there were SO many runners out when I got to my hills.. it just turns out that there were a lot of people who all happened to want to get their run out of the way at the same time this morning.

I LOVE peanut butter pretzels. Oh. my. gosh. I could live off of them. They’re so good, but I don’t buy them often enough!

Reply

Jen February 9, 2013 at 2:34 pm

Argh I’d be so frustrated if I missed a race that was a distance I’d been wanting to run!

I also think that soups tend to taste better after a few days of sitting. Somehow the flavors come together better!

Amy February 9, 2013 at 2:43 pm

I live in Utah and we have a series of runs called the salt lake winter series. We do a 5k, two weeks later a 10k, then 2 wks more a 15k. I love it. It really motivates you to run in the winter. Today’s run was COLD,COLD,COLD. It was windy and snowing. Blah!! But when your with a bunch of other people running in the cold it’s fantastic!

It sounds like you still got in a great run, but it stinks about not being able to run the race! I’m still digging out from about 2 feet of snow from yesterday/today, so it makes me smile to see pics of sweaty people outside :)

So jealous of your warm weather at the moment. We have 29″ of snow outside my house right now. Even if I wanted to run outside it was way to windy & nothing was shoveled. I can’t wait til the day I’m running in shorts & a tanktop again :) Enjoy that warm weather you have.

Thank you for sharing the Minestrone Soup recipe! When my husband and I ate at the Olive Garden last week, I didn’t order it, but when we left, I was determined to make some, so thanks! :) Made it for dinner tonight just subbing the chicken broth for veg broth. It was a hit with my almost 3 year old too and also gave my mom some and she said it was way better than the OG!
Great after my long run today in chilly PA!

I know just how you feel! Once we were visiting friends in Atlanta and I ran into a race on my morning run. I would have loved to have done this race – great weather, 10k, right by where we were staying. Major running envy!

I can remember riding my bike on a Saturday or Sunday about 15 years ago. I had just started out and was going to take a usual route only to find one street in a town blocked off…for a bike race. My reaction seems the same as yours: “How did I NOT know about this?” Oh well! The snow today for us in PA was only about 3 inches, but we had fun playing around in it anyway! Not enough to sled in though :(

Amy N. February 9, 2013 at 7:09 pm

There’s nothing worse than finding out you missed the perfect race! Aw man! Keep it in mind for next year! I would probably act very childish if I realized that, so I understand.

PB pretzels are about as good as it gets.

Missing a race like that is a feeling only another runner would understand!!! Sometimes just helps to think….things happen for a reason and there WAS a reason you were not meant to run/know about that race. ;)

It really hurts me to see you in a tank, sunglasses and sun shining on you. I spent the weekend shoveling out of the Blizzard we got (2+feet of snow) and its is now rainy, grey and dirty here!
I cannot wait to be wearing tanks in the sunshine again!!
