We found a winner.

We found a winner.  As you can see, Brooke is using her tongue to lick her lips.  She tried avocado for the first time ever last night and she was in love.  My DNA is shining through.   In my top 10 favorite things about California I listed the avocados on my list as #9 but I think it has bumped up to #2 now that I know Brooke loves them too.  (PS we call it a success when only 1/2 of her food ends up on her face)

DSC 8586

I am adding the below foods to my permanent shopping list.  We have had the Garlic and Rosemary loaf since Sunday (somebody gave it to us, I think it is from Whole Foods?) and finished the whole loaf off last night.   The pesto is from TJ’s and it is the best store bought one that I have ever had.

DSC 8610

We used leftover steak (ummm we like it medium rare obviously) with the pesto and mozzarella cheese for the best panini ever.

DSC 8609

After dinner we watched the Biggest Loser while Brooke studied the Hansons Marathon Method.   Since she is either right next to me when I am on the treadmill or in the stroller with me while I run she needs to know the workouts to make sure I do them right and keep pace.

DSC 8612

Oh yeah, I didn’t tell you about my run yesterday.  It warmed up so Brooke and I ran outside on the trail and did 10 miles at an average pace of 8:09.  My music died at mile THREE.  I almost fainted but it actually ended up being way better running without it.  Turns out that silent runs are really fun every now and then (even though I really did miss listening to my new Beyonce and Flo Rida playlist).

Our flight leaves super early this morning so no running in the morning but the RETREAT does have a fun run scheduled for the evening.  P.A.R.T.Y.

Hahaha Brooke as a running coach. I dig it. I hope she really gets you moving and starts yelling at you to run faster when you start slacking! That steak panini looks hands down amazing and why are those strawberries so fresh?! The ones we have here are like bruised and purple colored. I don’t think they would taste very good to eat…

Reply

I never use music! I just like to be alone with my thoughts haha. Can’t wait for our run tonight :-) Also haven’t run at night in a very long time! You have my permission to slap me if I fall asleep. Alarms that go off at 350 am make it difficult to imagine running at night ;-) CAN’T WAIT TO SEE YOU AND THAT SWEET LITTLE BROOKE!!!

Reply

I hope Brooke can supervise you well and keep you on track :) I definitely prefer to run at night. And without music.

Reply

The last race I did we had to take a bus to the start and I realized at the start my iPod was dead! I was irrationally upset haha, but used the race to talk to people around me and hear different running stories :) I hate running at night but will choose that if a friend can only meet at night instead of going by myself in the morning!

Reply

I go music-less on about 80% of my runs. Wait to Brooke starts talking your ear off all day long. You will love it but then you’ll love the silence of a run alone :)

No Brooks here. I’ve been faithful to my Nike Pegasus forever. I did try a pair of Brooks out last year but they hurt my feet. I was so bummed about that. My feet are very narrow so Nikes work well for me.

Reply

Oh she is too cute even with green stuff on her face!

I have a question for you… How much exercise is enough in one day? Do you find yourself at a point where you keep upping the time or miles you run?

Reply

I avoid running in the dark at all costs. But do enjoy the occassional group night run. I go music less whenever I am running with other people. I’d much rather talk than listen music :)

Reply

mmm avocados are delish!! I hardly ever run at night, I’m more of a morning runner

Reply

Brooke is just too cute for words!! I’ve been meaning to try the PureProjects. Yesterday my iPod also stopped at mile ONE and I freaked out but it was really nice to run without music. The only times I really run musicless is when that happens ha.

Reply

I usually don’t listen to music while I run, unless it’s for a short race or speed work. I stick to podcasts and audiobooks.

I used to always run at night when I worked a regular job. Now that I work from home, though, I take advantage of the sun and run in the morning.

Reply

I run most of my runs in the morning. When the weather is especially crummy I will swap it and run at night. I have no problems running at night, I’m just lazy.

Reply

Lucky Billy! I have been very seriously thinking about picking up a pair of the Pure Flows. I normally run in the Ghosts but kinda want to give the Pure Flows a try. I’m thinking you should take Brooke to coaching training and she can be your official running coach. :) Or maybe she doesn’t need official training, just a onesie with “COACH” written on the back that she can wear for your workouts or races. I almost exclusively run without music when I’m outside (except for races) because I want to be able to hear cars coming. I do need some sort of distraction on the treadmill, though.

Reply

I only run when music when I have a LOT on my mind, or the iPod dies.
BL: I am more than ANNOYED with Alex. She wants to cry and say why isn’t my best ever good enough? Maybe because it is not your best? Until she admits she is not putting 100% effort in, she will fail. She actually said that she doesn’t want to push her body too hard. Uh, hello. You are on the ranch.

Off to the gym!

JANAE!

I just wanted to say THANK YOU because reading your blog every day is a little dose of sunshine in my otherwise stressful and anxiety-ridden life. And the pictures of Brooke melt my heart and make me want a baby ASAP. Which is something I neeeever thought I’d say. She is actually the cutest. Like, probably cuter than all of my future children combined.

I hope you have a great day! <3

AMEN to Alyssa’s comments. You are a joy! e

I THIRD that. Janae, you have been making my day for over 2 years!

I can’t help but love the Biggest Loser. This week, I totally understand where they are mentally- learning to trust and have confidence in your self and others is extremely difficult! I learned this lesson through acroyoga but it is the same message!

Reply

Brooke is a lucky girl! I didn’t discover the deliciousness that was avocado until I was around 23… and she just looks too darned adorable in that pic. Have a safe trip today!

Brooke is just too cute! I do most of my runs without music because I am a crazy lady! ;)

-the Brooks PureCadence shoes are my absolute all-time favorite running shoes.
-I don’t listen to music too often when I run, but I’m almost always listening to a podcast. Jillian Michaels’ podcast is my favorite, but there are quite a few that I love.

Reply

For safety reasons, I have a hard time listening to music as I run on trails. I also prefer the “get away and enjoy” aspect when I’m running which means the sounds of nature to me.

Reply

I absolutely love my pure connects! I’m on my second pair.

Reply

Awww I’m glad brooke likes avocado! Is it apple fritters next? Lasagna? Haha.

Reply

I run without music 100% of the time. I have never liked listening to it while I run. I am going running tonight, and I am excited. But I usually run in the morning before work.

Reply

I really cant workout with out music! its weird because one time i had a really rough day and headed down to do some elliptical stuff and i was way zoning out and even had my headphones in and 10 minutes in i realized i was so zoned out i never actually turned my music ON haha.

Reply

Brooke has such cute pigtails. Have fun at the retreat!

Reply

Brooke has good taste! Avocados are awesome!

I don’t usually run at night, but occasionally I do if I can’t fit it in in the AM. I really don’t like it though because for some reason I get side abdominal cramps then. I don’t get them when I run in the AM. It’s right around where I had surgery last June so I think it might have something to do with that. I did run the Energizer Night Race through Stanley Park in Vancouver last Fall, and even though I had the pain then too, it was such an amazing experience! You should google the pics; they are amazing!

Reply

Have a great time at the retreat! I am liking this season of the Biggest Loser. I just watched this week’s episode today and was sad to see Francelina go but it looks like she’ll continue to make progress at home. I run at night sometimes but always listen to music, so it’s not really the safest combo.
Brooke looks so cute – how could she not like avocado?? SO good!!!

Reply

I only go without music if its by accident – so like once a week. I can tolerate it but I like music to keep my pace up. Love Billy’s new running gear! I hope you have some to match!

Reply

I love my music when I run mainly because it keeps me paced and because I loathe the sound of my feet hitting the pavement. I think it reminds me that I’m actually working and takes part of the joy out of it??? Weird, I know. However, sometimes if my music dies or if I forget it, I think a silent run is a great time to pray. I’ve had some amazing prayer runs!

Reply

Two of your questions have the same answer for me. .05% of the time do I run without music or run at night. I’m a creature of habit and I also use my music to block out the creepy man who always yells “ARE YOU RUNNING FROM ME?” at me until I respond to him.

Reply

What a smart little girl! I can’t get my child to try avocado!! I should have started her when she was younger. Good thinking!

I HATE working out without music. I do need to do it more often though. It helps me to slow down and focus on my form, breathing, etc.

I probably run at night 4x a year. I’m much more of a morning/daytime runner.

Reply

The PureFlows are my favorite running shoes ever! I’m on my third pair. I just got my hubs his first pair at Christmas. I was doing night time runs pretty regularly this winter because it got dark so early, but now it’s just way too cold.

Reply

I just bought the brooks cadence 2s in purple last month and I am in LOVE with them. Let us know what Billy thinks when he tries them out.

Reply

Brooke is the cutest!

I don’t run that often with music. Only at the gym… But actually I watch more TV at the gym!

Super exciting about your trip! You’re going to have a blast!

Reply

oh my gosh the solid stage is so much fun! brooke is darling. i am super impressed she will stay happy in the stroller for 10 miles and even more that you can push her that long!

lately i have been dividing up my miles. 4 in the morning 3 at night, etc. so i have been doing some afternoon/evening miles. but the bulk of them are done in the am.

i really don’t like listening to myself breathing so music is a must, unless of course my ipod dies too.

have a great weekend. it sounds like heaven:)

Reply

Avocado is one of my favorite foods! It is a must have in my house at all times!!

I go music-less when I run with my girls because we like to chat. Especially if we run on trails. I want to be able to hear if bikes or horses are coming. When I run alone on roads or in a race, I’m all about the music. I have so many favorite songs! I post a long of them about once a month. Right now anything from the Imagine Dragons is high on my list.

Reply

Juuuuust bought my first pair of Pures this weekend (Flow). Going to give this “less running shoe” thing a test drive. Wore them for the first 2 (of 10) miles this morning, and MAN was I disappointed when I put my “regular” sneakers back on…they felt so heavy! Not sure what will happen in the long run, but…we’ll see.

When you made the switch to a more minimal shoe, did you do it gradually or all at once? [I know you flirted with lots of different shoes for awhile, so they weren’t brand new to you…]

Reply

I’ve had awesome runs sans music and awesome runs with it. Gotta work with what you have and what didn’t run out of batteries:) Beyonce mixes are my new jam too this week!

Reply

I’m a super duper beginner runner (lol) – training for my first 5k!! :-) So far, all of my runs have been on the treadmill (because its so cold out!) and music-less, with the occasional TV distraction. I’m finally setting up my ipod this wkend however, and would love to get Beyonce “Get me Bodied” on it! I’m not a super huge Bey fan but I can’t help but stay motivated whenever I hear that song. Go figure, lol.

Reply

Brooke is definitely going to have a good food palate as she gets older if she is already loving avocados!

Reply

My daughter’s first solid food was avocado, and she still loooooves it (now 15 months old). I can’t wait until it warms up here in MN enough to run outside! Only 3 or so months to go….

Reply

It was so hard for me to feed Luke avocado because any that ended up on the floor or in his hair was less for me to eat! LOL.

Reply

Lately I’ve been running without my music. I find that when I do, I really focus on my breathing and form.

Late night running is not my thing. The neighborhood I live in is not exactly the best or safest. If I do have to run at night, I keep it inside on the treadmill.

Brooke is so cute. I love her messy face!! I never liked avacado until recently. I’ve really started to grow a love for it. :]

Reply

I can not stand avocados. The look, the texture, the way it feels in my mouth. Ugh. Could be my east coast upbringing. I never even remember seeing them growing up. But everyone loves them. I know I’m missing something.

I’ve been fighting a cold. Today I succumb. No running. Yesterday I could barely run up the gentle rolling hills on my path.

Have a fun trip

Reply

I try to run without music quite A lot so I don’t grow dependent. But it’s more fun WITH music!! Have a great trip, excited for you!

Reply

I look exactly like Brooke after I eat an avocado! They are SO good! She’s smart for liking them :) I liked The Biggest Loser, but was really sad to see sweet Francelina go home. She seems like such a light bubble of friendliness on the ranch. Gina is kind of getting annoying to me with all of her bouts of leaving the gym…haha

Reply

I love biggest loser but I’m not loving Jillian this season. She’s not giving anyone else a chance before she blows up and then we’re supposed to love her again when she finally calms down, acts like a rational person, and talks to them? Not working for me.

I LOVE the Pure Project line so much. The Cadence is the only shoe I wear now, and I used to have about 5 different pairs that I’d wear for different things. I love them so much.

I live in Washington where it rains all the time, I rarely take music. I have gotten used to it and now find music distracting. It’s so peaceful to run with just your own thoughts, or buddies.

Reply

OMG Brooke is seriously too much.. too cute!

Reply

Good grief Brooke is CUTE. I love the pigtails.
I always run with music if I possibly can, but I don’t mind a short run without.
I never said congrats on your new spin gigs – so better late than never, congratulations! I bet you are a really fun instructor!!!
Have so much fun at the retreat.

You’re going to have an awesome weekend with your mom!

I ran my last marathon without music for about 22 miles of it. I chatted with people in my pace group for most of the race. Since it was in Disney, I didn’t really need much music except for those parts on long stretches of highway!

I do have a pair from the Brooks Pure Project line, but I can’t remember which! I am a lover of the Ghost since I do need more of a stability shoe.

Reply

I used to run at night all the time. I run with music when I need to run fast. I do need music when I used cardio machines though. Otherwise I’d go insane. I’m dying over Brooke’s pigtails! All my girls were too bald when they were babies to do them. So CUTE!

Reply

Care to share that playlist? :)

Reply

Seriously, she can’t get any cuter. That picture with the avocado is too much!!! :)

Reply

Brooke is just too cute! I’m new to the blog & love it! I love running to Brass Monkey (before your time, ha!). I wear Brooks but I wear Adrenaline’s. Love them!

Reply

Brooke has good taste because avocados are amazing. I run at night all the time because of work and not being able to get more than 8 miles in beforehand.

Reply

I don’t know why it makes me so happy to see other people trying out the Pure Project line, but it does! Maybe because I am madly in love and I feel like my Pure Cadences are what’s keeping me injury-free this training cycle! Boston, here I come!

Okay, I know you love the BL and I used to as well. However, I’ve read some really startling articles lately that make it impossible for me to watch. I shouldn’t even share this with you, but I know what an advocate you are for healthy body image.

http://www.bodylovewellness.com/2010/06/16/kai-hibbard-biggest-loser-finalist-part-2-of-3/

The article above is about a past contestant who developed an eating disorder from being on the show. I was most appalled by the way the contestants are treated “like animals” when on the show. It just makes me very, very sad. After reading this, I feel like the show exploits and takes advantage of a vulnerable group of people who are desperate for weight loss. Anyway, just some (depressing) food for thought.

Reply

I have been going music-less for past week or so, I cannot find my ipod ANYWHERE!! Its like it got up and walked away…what I’m more sad about than the ipod though, is that it had my Nike+ adapter plugged into it to track my runs. Now if I buy a new one I’m pretty sure my Nike+ account won’t connect to it. Dagger…

PS I love avocados too, Brooke has great taste already :)

Looks like she’s doing her job then ;) Haha. SO cute!

That meal does look delish–I love paninis. So much.

Just found you through Brandi. She is so, so adorable!! I love avacado, good choice for her!

hahaha love the look on Brooke’s face, you do a great job capturing her expressions! She has so much personality! I have been loving the app Songza (way better than Pandora)!!! But quiet runs never fail to be needed once and a while :)

I just posted on your facebook about the Brooks I’m getting next week. Super good deal. Billy got hooked up, nice jacket. I have an all black Brooks jacket that I love and run with all the time at night. But my brother told me if I run at night, which I do 3x a week I should wear reflective Brooks gear.

Reply

She is growing up so fast!

Reply

I started running (for the most part) without music about 4 months ago and it has been quite interesting. Hearing myself breathing hard definitely makes me pretty tired, but I’ve found that it helps me focus on my form and my breathing and feel more connected to my run (usually, I wanted to zone out and become disconnected between mind and body).

Reply

That first picture of Brooke is so stinking cute. Oh my goodness I love her! I kind of forgot about the rest of the post…sorry. Travel safe my friend. :):)

Reply

Haha my friend’s baby loves avocados too, he could eat a whole bowl of guacamole on his own!

Reply

Oh my goodness, how I LOVE LOVE LOVE that picture of Brooke. I almost want to save it & look at it when I’m having a bad day because how can that NOT make you smile?! :D
Hope you guys have a safe flight, and please make your next flight to Florida ;)

Reply

Brooke is such a cutie as usual!! I don’t run with music that often. Sometimes the headphones and armband start to bother me and I want to rip them off! I sometimes run with music during races because I feel like it helps me go a bit faster! My my hubby always meets me towards the end of the race so I can rip the armband off and give it to him – lol!

Reply

This picture of Brooke is so adorable!!!!
I used to run without music but once I started running with it, I noticed that I was faster, probably due to the beat, so now I tend to run with music. I never run at night though, too scared of it.

Reply

Every time I see a picture of Brooke I about die of the cuteness :) This is one of the cutest ones yet!

I must run with music, so I would have probably quit when my music died! I read magazines on the treadmill when I run, too! I generally run without music during races, though, as the energy of the sea of people keeps me going! And, if I’m in a huge race, I like to hear the footsteps and noises of people around me so I don’t trip myself or anyone else. I do run without music if I have a running buddy also because talking makes the time go by much, much faster than even music!

I missed commenting to say congratulations on your Spin gigs! I am a Spin instructor also and love it!

Your runs always inspire me! I am not nearly as fast as you and wish I could hit that pace even without a stroller. Maybe someday I will get there!

Reply

I break every rule. I run at night and I listen to my Ipod. Usually it’s a book or a podcast. Usually it’s just in one ear and I run on the busiest streets there are. Lots of stopping at stop lights and no trails for me. I love the city running so it works well for me.

Brooke makes me happy. And I have my own little grandson who is beautiful. But she is pretty freakin’ cute.

Reply

I love avocados and so do my girls (6 and 8)…we eat them with almost anything in this house! Brooke is a smart little girl…hopefully the love will last :)

Brooks Pure Flows are my miracle shoe. I have struggled with ITBS for months and finally decided to try something really different from my normal traditional 12mm drop shoe, so I bought a pair of Flows. The first run out I didn’t even have a twinge from my IT band. I thought maybe it was just a coincidence so I switched back to my Mizuno Wave Riders for a run and bam…IT pain at mile 1 as usual. I tried the Flows again on my next run and no IT pain or tightness at all. It’s the craziest thing, but for whatever reason, I am totally pain free in my Flows. I didn’t think it was possible to love an inanimate object but I am seriously in love with these shoes…I feel happy every time I see them in my closet or better yet, on my feet : )

Reply

Steph, I have found them to be miracle shoes, too!

Reply

I am dying to try any of the Brooks Pure series but I have wide feet. Right now they don’t make any in wides so I am out of luck.

Reply

I love running in the morning with the sunrise. How often do I actually wake up that early though? I plan my runs around when I need to shower. Hahaha.

Just sayin… I’m not about to shower and do my hair twice a day!

Reply

I don’t mind running in the evening. Sometimes that’s the only time I can go. (But Larissa is right, then you have to shower twice!) When I first started running I always ran with music. But now I rarely do (unless I’m on the dreadmill) I just love being “at one with nature” haha when I’m running outside. So peaceful.
That picture of Brooke with the avocado lips even made my jaded 20 yr old son smile. She is so cute I can hardly stand it.

Reply

Brooke is way tooooo cute!!! just wondering…what kind of camera do you use? i really like how clear your pics are

Reply

I’ve just recently added PureCadence IIs into my shoe rotation and I am so in love with them! In my mind Brooks can truly do no wrong.

Reply

I read several blogs regularly, and have been for a couple of years (I think I found yours by the way of SkinnyRunner about eight months ago), and I have NEVER commented. But I have to admit, your daughter is one of the cutest babies I think I’ve ever seen. She’s just adorable

Reply

Yay she loves avocado too! :) She is the second cutest baby…V has to be first..I am his mom it would be wrong to make him second ;)

Reply

I run musicless most of the time. Every now and then I pop on some tunes and it’s like a whole new run. I’ve gotten so used to running without music, that now when I do listen to it, it’s like a special treat!

I’m obsessed with the PureProject line. I just got my second pair of PureFlows and am about to get a new pair of the PureGrit2’s (my original PureGrits are about on their last leg).

Brooke is potentially the cutest baby I have ever seen. All that avocado!

Reply

I love my tunes- a huge variety- and I love my brooks pure flows!
