A sad day for Northern Californians.

February 4, 2013

Three things about the Super Bowl.

1.  I can’t even explain how thrilled I was when Destiny’s Child was reunited for the half time show.  So many wonderful 9th grade memories came to me as I watched the three of them back together again singing my favorite songs.

2.  I had the best food that I have ever had at a super bowl party.

3.  Billy and Brooke are VERY sad about the final score.

DSC 7582

But at least they had a good time watching it together.

DSC 7583

For some reason we NEEDED to have two televisions to watch the game?! Okay, it was pretty cool.

DSC 7579

MY FAVORITE foods of the night were these crazy awesome potato skins (I think I ate 4 whole potatoes worth, I REALLY love potatoes)

DSC 7578

and these steak and avocado quesadillas.  I have really been having a thing for quesadillas recently.

DSC 7573

I ended up buying the stuff for those one cookies but after I made the bars I felt lazy and decided to make the cookies later on this week because I figured that four plates of treats were enough for 10 people.    Don’t worry, brownie/caramel cookies will be seen in just a few days.

DSC 7586

Brooke was amazed that rice krispy treats could be formed into footballs.

DSC 7588

Chilaxin with the girls.

DSC 7599

We let the boys be in a picture too but I think one of them was a little upset about life because his team was losing.

DSC 7601

The best sporting event we watched yesterday was the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix…. I could watch track/running/marathons all day.  These people are incredible.

Beyonce fan?  What did you think of the half time show?

If you had a super bowl party, what was the best food that you had?

Anyone run a race this weekend?  How did it go!?!?

Any track runners reading?  Did you run in high school?  College?

Julie @ Sweetly Balanced February 4, 2013 at 5:05 am

Looks like a fun party! I had plans to make those salted caramel brownies you posted also, but decided that making just plain brownies from the box with chocolate frosting would be easier!! Everyone loved them! :)

Sarah @PickyRunner February 4, 2013 at 5:18 am

Bahahah it looks like Brooke and Billy had a really intriguing conversation happening there. Very into whatever they were discussing. Probably some football technique. All of those desserts look delicious but you’re saving the best for later. I can never get enough of brookie’s. I definitely only go to superbowl parties for the food which is why I was bummed that I didn’t go this year. Oh well… I’ll have my own food party.

I swear, I would weigh 300 lbs if I hung out with you! That food looks amazing!! Steak and avocado quesadilla?? Sign me up!

I think I am the only person who didn’t watch the Superbowl. haha. If I had known Destiny’s Child was going to be preforming maybe I would have. I used to love them:-)

Destiny’s Child – omigosh YES. I may or may not have squealed like a little girl when I saw them. And all the food looks so, SO tasty. We didn’t have any Superbowl snacks this year (sad face), but I did manage to convince my mom that some browning bananas needed to be used up in banana bread. Not as good as 7 layer bars, but still tasty.

Happy Monday, Janae!

That food spread is making me drool! That’s one (more) down side to living over here in England– it’s hard to have a Super Bowl party on a Sunday night starting at 11pm. Booooo! But Yay! for your party– so fun!

I love the photo of Billy and Brooke–that’s a keeper to show her when she’s older. I’m glad you got to enjoy all of the yummy food you were looking forward to yesterday. The Destiny’s Child halftime reunion was really awesome. I thought I read somewhere that they’re reuniting for a new album, which I’m sure will be awesome.

I thought you would be excited to know I ran on a treadmill this morning for the first time in years!! My half marathon training begins today and since it’s sporting a nice 25 degrees outside (feels like 15) i opted for the gym in my apartment complex! With the help of Linkin Park, it was a great first day of training :)

My roommate and I had a dance party of Beyonce/Destiny’s Child while we were waiting for them to turn the lights back on! Such good songs!!! :)

Beyonce was a great show- I downloaded some of her tunes to add to my running mix! I ran track in HS & college, and loved watching the NB meet. Mary Cain is unbelievable. 16 years old and running 9:38 for two miles….yeah now I feel old and slow.

I almost cried from being excited when Destiny’s Child rolled out. Even my mom was like, “DESTINY’S CHILD”. It was a little awkward but funny. When she famously said, “Kelly, can you handle this?” I switched my name to Kelly and screamed, “NO!” at the television. UGH, it didn’t last long enough.

Reply

Samantha February 4, 2013 at 7:34 am

I LOVED the halftime show and was also insanely excited to see DC reunited! But I almost died when my husband said “who are those other girls with Beyonce?” What?! You are right, the songs took me back to the “old days.” We had wings from Kroger which were pretty good, pizza bites (from Pinterest – biscuits with pepperoni and cheese inside) and the white mexican cheese dip – apple dumplings with vanilla ice cream for dessert. Kind of random but good.

Rachel @ Undercover Diva: A Sitcom February 4, 2013 at 7:43 am

Sounds like you had fun! Brooke in the first picture looks like she’s kinda saying “Well, we tried Daddy, better luck next year.” And shruggin her shoulders. Too cute. I LOVED Beyonce’s performance. I seriously want that outfit. She ROCKED it!! I spent the first half of the game alone (womp womp) but I made tofu pulled “pork” and then went out for the second half of the game. It was a fun, laid back night.

I was totally rooting for the Ravins – and by Ravins I mean former Coug Dennis Pitta.

I had the lamest sports day yesterday. I was at churh and making lunch during the grand prix and I only saw the end of the 3000m (I’m sad Rupp Lost) and a pole vaulting recap and that’s it.

Then I saw the first 20 minutes of the super bowl and then had to go to choir practice. I came home in time for half time, one awesome kickoff return, and the power outage. Then I got to see two plays and had to go back to church for a rehersal and a fireside. Lame.

LOVED the half time show! Beyonce and Destiny’s Child. You can’t go wrong. Sad the niners lost after such an awesome come back. Gotta support my west coast teams :)

I ran cross country in high school. Really wish I’d taken it more seriously back then. Athletics scholarships pay way more than academic ones. (Although grades are of course way, way important!) At least it got me into running!

Reply

Sonia the Mexigarian February 4, 2013 at 8:40 am

Sad day indeed. I was more bummed for my husband and his friends than anything else. But I was happy that friends and family came together to watch the game. That’s the important thing. :) And we had 2 toddlers and one 10 months old running around out house which was pretty darn entertaining.

I wanted more Destiny’s Child and more actual song than music and dance. Lyrics are important. Though I do give her credit for that fierce catwalk strut she had going.

We didn’t have a superbowl party, but my favorite part was when there was the play where the guy ran 109 yards in 11 seconds and then I spent some time trying to convert that into MPH just for kicks and he was going 20 MPH! Crazy!

I made hot chocolate brownies for our party (in Hawaii). I remember that you made hot chocolate cookies a couple of months ago- we tried your recipe. AND, my kids loved the cookie, especially because of the marshmellows on top. The brownies were a huge hit yesterday :)

I think Beyonce put on a good show, but I definitely would not have wanted my young daughters/sons watching it (if I had any – you know what I mean).

We had a party with our small group from church, and there was a lot of great food! I made a bacon cheese dip in a bread bowl that is always good, but the show-stopper was my friend Lindsay’s tamales. She just got back from visiting family in south Texas and brought some homemade tamales for us. They were amazing!

So many things I loved about this post! One bad thing though is I get so hungry hearing about your meals. Yum! Everything sounded so great!

I was okay with Beyonce’s outfit in light of it being a performance and not a stroll around town but the licking the finger and dragging it down your cleavage was a bit over the top. Other than that, they kicked butt.

I’m in Baltimore and I made the caramel brownie cookies, and they were a huge hit, and now I am starting to think they helped bring our team to victory! You will love them but the key is to put in extra salt, the recipe doesn’t call for nearly enough. I also added toffee chips.

My brother and I ran a 5k in Golden Gate Park on Sunday. I thought I was going to die but we ran it much faster than I was anticipating! (The net downhill helps a lot ;) And since I don’t remember any of my 5k times from high school…I think this qualifies as an automatic PR!! :) And it was a great excuse to eat more Super Bowl munchies!!

I too live in the Bay Area and have felt an overwhelming feeling of “blah” since the Super Bowl. I grew up rooting fot the 49ers and that was just tough to watch.

The day started off so well though… I did the Kaiser 5K in Golden Gate Park for the 3rd year in a row. Its the best way to start Super Bowl Sunday because it gives you an excuse to eat extra dessert or appetizers or both!! I managed my best time for this race (I like to call it a 5K + 0.2 because it’s not certified and closer to 3.3 than 3.1) and I checked my time at 3.1 on my Garmin and it would have been a PR for a true 5K too!!!!

My house (GO 49ers) was super upset with the outcome of last nights game too. My fiance and I decided to get crazy and assigned a workout move for each touch down, field goal, beer commercials, extra oints, 20+ run/play passess, etc. We ended up doing 130 push-ups, 300 crunches, 20 chair dips, 150 squats, 90 sec. planks, 185 jumping jacks, and 60 reverse abs. It was fun and I’m SORE.

Brooke is so cute in her little 49er gear :)

I thought that Beyonce’s halftime show (the outfit, dance moves, etc) belonged in a strip club. sorry, but this is the super bowl. Millions of families are watching it and alot of little girls who look up to Beyonce. Her whole act was over the top in my opinion and that outfit was insanely immodest. Do i sound uptight to some people? Probably. But I dont care. what I saw last night was a woman promoting her sexuality in front of millions of people in a way that was cheap, tawdry and classless all in an attempt to say “Look at me world, THIS is female empowerment!” In my opinion it is NOT female empowerment. I wish women could understand that they are so much more than their bodies and their sexuality. Beyonce is a beautiful, talented woman. But you know what all the men watching her last night most likely saw? SEX. and I happen to think women are worth alot more than that.
