How to Ring in the New Year

Happy Happy Happy Birthday to my most wonderful Mer (without a doubt the best grandma in the whole wide world)!

It is also another incredible woman’s birthday today… My MIL!!!

She takes birthdays very seriously.  Each year on her birthday my FIL goes out and gets enough donuts for 43 people (even though there are only 5 of us here now) and we eat them at 9 a.m. on the dot.

The apple fritter is always my go-to donut.   I can’t even explain to you how much self control it takes for me to not share with Brooke.

The other part of the tradition is that we eat the donuts while watching the Rose Parade (all 2 hours of it;)

After the parade watching (aka I took a 2 hour nap) we went to the grocery store to get stuff to make dinner tonight and most importantly stuff for the birthday cake.

Billy and I are off to go on a run date.  We are going trail running… this will be my first real trail run ever (at least that I can remember).

Here is Brooke saying goodbye!

After our run it is going to be time to watch the Rose Bowl and I am going to attempt to eat some vegetables, it has been a very long time since I have had one of those.

Aaaah. I feel like I haven’t commented in years. Things have been crazy around here. We have spent the day hanging out and taking care of my kids and hubby who are sick and cleaning the house. Lame sauce. I still need to exercise too, but my gym is closed and it is like 14 degrees outside…and well, I am just not that hard core. Jillian it will be.

I made funfetti chex mix last night to eat while we played games with friends and I ate way too much. As usual. I need to make some serious New Years Resolutions when it comes to eating.

I love all the pics of Brook – especially the floating one! She looks so dang cute in that outfit ;)

My parentals, sister and bro in law were at the Rose Parade today. They go every year to the parade and game while I watch their kids. Dang I am a good sister. Ha!

I hope you and your family have an amazing year! You deserve it.

I have missed you dearly!! NOOOO everyone is sick at your house? Boo. I can’t believe how cold Utah is. Yes, do Jillian. What is this funfetti chex mix that you speak of?
I want to go to the Rose Parade, you are an amazing sister! I sure miss and love you Megan!

Everyone but me. I feel like it is a ticking time bomb.

You melt 1 package of vanilla almond bark according to directions. Pour over 1 box Rice Chex (that you have dumped into a large bowl). Stir until cereal is coated in chocolate. Dump a box of funfetti cake mix on chocolate covered cereal and stir until covered. Spread cereal on wax paper/tin foil and let dry. It is (obviously) very easy, yummy and addictive :) I miss and love you too! This cold weather only makes me try and convince Ross that I should come and visit you more!

Reply

That seriously sounds like heaven. I need that right this second. Yep, come visit us asap!!!

Every year for Christmas my mom gets me flannel pj’s. I always wear them for the first time New year’s eve, and then stay in them all the following day. I ran this morning, showered, and put them right back on! It has been a fabulous day.
I’m sure you are back by now, so I hope you are love love loving running on trail…….pretty awesome!

Happy New Year Janae!

Today is my mom’s birthday! She went out of town with her hubby yesterday, so we celebrated over the weekend with lots of family.

It’s cold and rainy here in GA, so I just did a short run on the treadmill while watching UGA win the Capital One Bowl!

I missed the Rose Bowl Parade today! :( I have always wanted to go to Cali and work on the floats the last week before the Parade. I also want to go the night before Thanksgiving to NYC and see all the balloons get blown up. Apparently I have I thing for Parades…

Spent today so far – cleaning, football watching and got my first run of the year in already! Now just 997.5 miles left to get in for my 1000 mile goal for 2013.

***Do you keep track of your yearly totals?? Any idea how many miles you got in for 2012?

Reply

You’ve totally got your 1000 miles goal! I always try to keep track but then I forget. That is one of my goals this year and I was actually going to talk about that in my next post. How about this year we go and help with the parades;)

Reply

Aww your grandma is the cutest!!

I spent my day watching Harry Potter with the dog (best), cleaning, reading new healthy recipes to try and a 5 mile run!!

As for the donuts- save me a vanilla sprinkle donut, I’m on the way :)

Reply

I will totally save you that donut, see you soon! Your day sounds absolutely perfect!

Reply

Happy New Year! We went on a trail hike today to kick off 2013. It was a perfect way to completely exhaust ourselves before sitting on the couch all night watching football. I am actually not a fan of donuts, but let me know when you have a cupcake party and I will there in 2 minutes :)

Reply

Mer and Brooke are seriously both so adorable! I want to be best friends with both of them! Also I am going to have a new nephew any minute now!

Happy Birthday to your Mer and MIL!!! I love the way you celebrate with your MIL, alllll those doughnuts…HEAVEN!!! I would totally split an apple fritter with you and would take a cinnamon roll all to myself.

Reply

Happy Birthday to your Mer & MIL! My mom and stepdad’s birthdays are both this weekend. We have a ton of birthdays from November to January in our family, and then it’s pretty quiet the rest of the year. Funny how that happens!
Today has been a pretty productive one over here so far… I cleaned & organized the pantry, we started cleaning out our junk room/office to turn into the nursery, picked out paint colors for the nursery, and hung a few new things on the walls around the house. I’m quite proud of our accomplishments. ;)
And I would be glad to help you finish off those donuts! Yum!

Reply

I LOVE the donuts with the cream in the middle!!! I’ll be over soon!

Reply

Happy New Year to you, Billy, and Brooke! And a very happy birthday to you grandma and mother-in-law! Can’t wait to see a picture of the cake!
Hope you guys had a good trail run. Trail running is my fave, but we don’t do it nearly enough. I love the challenge of the hills and tricky trails!
My birthday is Jan. 11- the last one before the big 3-0!

Reply

I hope you love the trail run, I rarely get to do it but I absolutely love it.

Reply

Mer is just the cutest thing ever! I love your posts that include her. I only wish she could adopt me as her grand-daughter! Also, your MIL seems pretty rockin’ :) Happy Birthday to both of them!

Reply

January baby right here! Mine is on the 4th, so it’s coming up soon :D Happy Birthday to your grams and MIL!! I’m definitely down for coming over to celebrate with some donut eating.

Reply

I want some donuts! I am having one of those days where I just can’t seem to eat enough. I’m hungry!

Reply

My mom would have been 73 today – we lost her to breast cancer in 1998. My brother and his son share January 11th as their birthday.

I ran 13 miles this morning to start 2013 off right! My goal is 13 half marathons in 2013 – not all races, but at least that many of that distance. 1 down, 12 to go.

I love coming to your blog everyday and seeing Brooke. She is growing and changing so much. Love all her expressions!

Reply

OMG those donuts. Get in my belly.

Reply

I have a January birthday. It is fantastic because I get to have King Cake every year for my birthday!

Those donuts look amazing right now!
I’ve never been on a trail run either but I can imagine that it’d be really fun!

Reply

My birthday is on the 14th!!! I love birthdays! It is also a great day because the Australian Open for tennis also starts on the 14th. I’ve become obsessed with tennis recently. :) I went to a family member’s house and had a great meal this afternoon, which included black eyed peas and collards. I will have good luck now!! :) I’m not really a donut person (I’m weird), but I just had two, yes two, giant cinnamon muffins! Those were delish! Happy New Year!!

Reply

Ohhh have fun on your trail run I bet you’ll be hooked :)

Reply

Happy new year!!
I’ve spent the entire day on the couch watching terrible tv shows. Running and productivity may resume tomorrow. I have no appetite and those donuts still look amazing!

Reply

I’ll have to pass on those donuts because I’m flying to Florida for the Florida Keys Ragnar Relay! So excited I can’t stand it. It’s freezing here in Utah!

Reply

Happy new year! Mmm those doughnuts look delicious!

Reply

Happy New Year! I love the donut and parade tradition. We need to start a cute tradition. Today we picked out our couples’ Bible study for the year and I think that will be our new tradition: hopefully accompanied by a decadent dessert :)

Reply

My mom and dad were both born on January 1st but they are 5 years apart in age. Growing up it was a huge neighborhood party day with tubing and turkey dinner! Now they’re divorced but I always have fond memories of New Years.

Reply

First of all, happy New Year!!! Hope you are enjoying all 2013 has to offer so far.
Not a January birthday but I’ve got a February one. It’s close enough to start the countdown now, don’t you think?!
I spent my New Years relaxing and starting my new blog. Yep, I finally took the plunge. Yikes, what have I gotten myself into?? ;-)
No race this weekend because I’m gearing up for the Disney marathon in a week and a half!
Happy birthday to your grandma and MIL! If only you weren’t all the way across the country I would totally celebrate with y’all and stuff my self with donuts.
Enjoy your night!

My cousin’s sweet baby boy had his first birthday today! I’m so sad I missed it, but I’ll see him next weekend. He was the first baby boy in his county last year.

I think Brooke looks a lot like Billy’s mom. Does anyone else think so?

Happy Birthdays to your family and Happy New Year!

Happy birthday to your MIL & grandma :)!

Happy New Year’s! Those donuts look delicious! Sounds like a great way to spend a holiday to me. Good luck on your trail run!

Reply

My aunt’s birthday is Jan 1 and my SIL’s is Jan 2.

I’m loving that donut tradition, but could do without the parade. I never understood the thrill of parades.

Reply

I can’t get over those donuts. The pink box just makes me swoon!

New Years day consisted of IKEA shopping followed by some quality time with mini wooden pegs and an Alan wrench. :) Too fun.

Reply

My Birthday is in January! (the 28th). I think I am the only one when New Years comes that yells “It’s my birthday month!!!”” instead of Happy New Years :)

Reply

Happy Birthday to Mer and your MIL!!

I have a January birthday! It’s January 11, so it’s coming up next Friday!

Reply

Jennae – the band on the tv screen in your Rose Bowl Parade picture is from my old high school in Orange City, IA! They march in wooden shoes. Do you remember seeing them in the parade? Cool! I thought they did an awesome job but then I am just a little biased heehee! Happy new year!

Reply

Ahhhhh that is so so cool! They were amazing!

Reply

Yay! I’m a January birthday too. The 14th. And it’s a tradition that I ALWAYS eat funfetti cake on my birthday.

Reply

Janae,

I’m just catching up on your blog, and love it! Just wanted to chime in and let you know that I am currently visiting family in CO and had Cafe Rio for the first time ever, and now I’m having dreams about the cilantro lime dressing!

Also, random, but that is my HS marching band marching on your tv screen!
