GO to the store when you are hungry.

I am actually quite nervous about how happy Brooke gets when she sees candy.  Even though she looks like Billy’s mini-me at least we know that she is mine because of her love for candy.

It is completely normal to stand in the candy aisle at target for 10 minutes debating if it is worth it to get the caramel flavored candy corn or the normal kind and then get frustrated and get Milk Duds instead.  I am now regretting my decision because I NEED some candy corn right now and even though Milk Duds always sound like a good idea they aren’t because the caramel in those things almost rips my teeth out every time.

A few hours after our Target extravaganza we went to Costco.  I got a good picture of Billy looking at the camera but didn’t use it because in that picture you could tell I went a little overboard on the self-tanner.

The Costco goods.

3 things about this picture:

1. Gas prices are ridiculous.

2. It rained yesterday which I really love because then you feel like it is necessary to stay in your pajamas all day and eat soup.

3.  Dang it, I had a third thing but I can’t remember what it was anymore.

You know how they say, ‘never go to the store hungry.’  That is bad advice because last night we went hungry and ended up getting my new favorite dinner.  They had the Boudin brand clam chowder which is from the restaurant that we get our clam chowder at in San Francisco.  It will be a new staple in our household.

Our romantic dinner set-up.  The bag of Cheez-its really set the mood.

After dinner Billy went back to school and I went to book club.  I adore my book club.  There are about 10 of us and they always choose great books, we have great conversations about the book and we always have delicious treats.  We read the book, ‘A Million Miles in a Thousand Years’ and I really enjoyed it.  It was a little slow in the beginning and it was different than most books I usually choose but I ended up highlighting half the book because I thought it was so great.

Pumpkin bread, apples and AMAZING apple dip.  I found a similar recipe for the dip HERE.

I love rainy days so long as I’m indoors! It’s the best when I’m trying to fall asleep :)! I’m suddenly really craving a Granny SmitH!

Reply

I totally agree with you!

On the subject of candy corn, I had candy corn salt water taffy the other day. I’m not usually a HUGE fan of taffy, but OMG it tasted delicious! Just like candy corn in a more chewy and delicious form! That pumpkin bread and apple dip looks ridiculously yummy. I need some now!

Reply

I must find this candy corn taffy! That sounds incredible!

Wow… I’ve been missing from blogworld (again) and come back to see that Brooke is getting bigger! I thought babies stayed small forever! ;)
Just wanted to come by and say a quick hello! :)
I’m glad you’re enjoying your book club! I always thought joining one would be fun! :)

Reply

yum to the apple dip!

Reply

that picture of brooke with the candy is sooo cute! i think the third thing you forgot about that picture is that brooke is adorable :)

as far as soup goes, i love a lot of different kinds, but i don’t think there’s anything more comforting than chicken noodle soup

Reply

I love split pea soup!! Definitely my favorite- Especially on rainy days!!! I’m actually not a fan of candy corn- but I could eat an entire bag of Reeses or cadbury cream eggs in one sitting (I may or may not have done this before)

Also, P.S. I know you’re not supposed to compare babies or anything- but I think that Brooke definitely wins cutest baby award!!! Her little facial expressions kill me every time!! :)

Reply

My mother-in-law makes that apple dip but without the Heath bar pieces. I am totally sneaking in some next time though, it sounds sooooo good!

I love clam chowder. And you are right rainy days are great for staying in your pajamas all day!

Reply

I think it’s only fair for you to ship over some candy corn so I can try this stuff! My boyfriend thinks I’m going crazy as I’ve started to crave it when I see your posts even though I’ve never tried it!! haha Brooke looks awesome in her zip up hoody, she’s changing so much isn’t she, what a cutie! xx

Reply

I love how overjoyed Brooke looks in that candy photo! I have never been in a book club. Most of my reading is consumed by textbooks, but I did just finished the Steve Jobs bio and loved it. My favourite soup is definitely my mum’s sweet potato soup. And I only enjoy the rain if I fall asleep to the sound of it, but otherwise I’m not a fan.

Reply

Favorite Soup ever is Cream of Broccoli! I love soup weather!!

Reply

First, Brooke’s face is so freakin adorable. Second, I just finished Unbroken and loved it. I might use it as my book club book next time around. This month we’re reading Anne of Green Gables. The first thing I did when I moved here was join book club — best decision of my move. Last, our Costco was out of the easy-peel oranges, and I cried a little.

Reply

I’m in a book club! I love it! We end up talking about the book a little, our lives a bunch, and eating a ton!

Your posts always make me hungry! I want soup and candy corn, now! :) Brooke is super adorable. I agree with the above comment that said this is the third thing you were going to say about the picture. I was actually thinking that when I saw the picture. I like rainy days, but I like them when I’m indoors. I love the sound of rain. A little spice in soup is always nice. I don’t think there is a soup though that I dislike. I love to read and I’m always looking for new books. I looked up this title and put it on my Amazon wishlist. It looks great!
Have a wonderful weekend.

I love rainy days! It’s supposed to rain all day tomorrow and my husband I going to be gone all day which means I can stay in my jammies and watch chick flicks all day long. I can’t wait!

I used to be a part of a Bookclub when I lived in LA. I haven’t found a good one where I live now. I’m considering starting one. We will see. I love to read and I need friends. It’s the perfect combo!

Reply

Not in a book club. I just read whatever sounds good.
Favorite soup is corn chowder. Or cream of chicken and wild rice.
An occasional rainy day is ok.
Haven’t tried it.

-I’m not in a typical book club but I am in a Bible study and we’re reading a study book guide together and meet once a week. It’s a lot of fun and of course I’m learning a lot!
-I love rainy days…most people say they’re “dreary” and make you feel sad but they always cheer me up! Opposite I guess :)
-There’s a Costco opening up in our city next month and every time you talk about it I get excited for that!

Reply

Yummers, I love clam chowder! And Chicken Corn Chowder.. hhmmmm, maybe I’ll try to dig out a recipe and make it this weekend!

Brooke really does look like Billy’s mini me! She’s precious :)

My favourite book I read recently was Chrissie Wellington’s book A World Without Limits (I think that’s what it’s called?) Anyway, it was amazing, I couldn’t put it down! She’s so inspiring :)

I’m in a book club with other bloggers and it’s the BEST! We spend about 5 minutes talking about the book, and the rest of the time hanging out, eating, and drinking wine.

I love the fall flavored candy corn. Caramel is awesome! I changed my mind-that’s m y new favorite picture of Brooke!

Reply

Amen, sistah!! I am ALL about the spontaneous snacks while shopping on a hungry stomach! Mind you, I’m the kind of person who can stand to only buy one (or two …) snacks during a trip. I think that if I were more impulsive, it might be dangerous!
I love that Brooke is getting more animated in all her pictures! And more of an interactive form of animated, although I did love the 70 seconds of Brooke crazy face pictures as well.
I’m not so much into caramel candy corn, but can’t wait for the Christmas flavours to come out!!

Reply

Your apple dip recipe came at the perfect time! I’ve been searching Pinterest for an apple dip recipe!I think this dip would be awesome with pumpkin added to it too!

I love potato soup especially on a rainy day – and it’s rainy here today!

Totally random: I had Which Wich for the first time the other day and I LOVED it!

Reply

How did you find a book club so fast?? I’m impressed. I want to join one, or even start one, but none of my friends are interested, even though they read. What are you guys reading next? Maybe I can just live vicariously through your book club ;)

Also, I started running this summer, but now it’s getting chilly and I don’t know what to wear on a run. Any recommendations?

I’ve never been in a book club, but since I LOVE to read (and write!) it sounds like something I must experience at some point!

OH my gosh Brooke is so cute!!!
I feel like I think I don’t like candy corn but then when I eat it I love it. It’s like I forget I like it the rest of the year??
I wish I was in a book club! That would be so fun! I do go on goodreads.com. I always find new books there!
I’m a fan of calm chowder! YUM!!

Books:
I was in Seattle when we lived there, it was awesome we drank wine AND read the books. I am currently reading The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh which takes place in the bay so I love that. It’s great so far. I’m also reading The Runner’s Edge. Trying to psych myself up for my half.

Soup:
Favorite soup…the tomato basil from the cafe at Norstrom but they don’t have it in many of their restaurants on the menu anymore since they switched many of them to the Bistro. But they sell it in a jar so I buy that.

Rain:
I am from Seattle. I used to live under a cloud for 9 months out of the year and it got depressing by the time June rolled around and you were still in your fleece and rain boots. However here (I’m near you) it doesn’t rain much so I savor the cloudy rainy days when it ACTUALLY feels like FALL! I love that, I wore a sweater for the first time this season and I loved it. My kids got out their rain boots and umbrellas but then were annoyed. California kids already. Mind you it drizzled here in Redwood City. There wasn’t any real rain.

Candy: I don’t love that kind of candy, I would rather burn those calories on something like a really good chocolate chip cookie or cinnamon roll. :)

Reply

I am in charge of our ward book club and while I LOVE reading books and being in a book club, I don’t know how much I love being in charge of one.

Regular candy corn FTW. Caramel ones are not very good. Once I broke one of my braces off my tooth while eating a milk dud. True story.

My mom buys every kind of fruit Costco offers every Saturday and makes that fruit dip every Sunday to eat with all the aforementioned fruit as an ‘appetizer’ for every Sunday dinner/get together. I won’t tell you how many times I get too full from eating it to even eat dinner that night. But it is so worth it :)

I love rainy days for the reasons you mentioned. I love me some lazy days. Fall = soup and chili season = my fave. I made chili last week, last night I made chicken chili verde soup, but I think my all time favorite would be either chicken tortilla or chicken and wild rice.

Now I think I am going to eat soup for breakfast! Have a great weekend!

Reply

No on the book club. I’m a little behind…the last good book I read was “The Help”
Favorite soup: Tomato Cheddar!

Love the rain, it doesn’t rain much here at all!

Have you tried the caramel apple candy corns!? They are amazing!

Reply

I am addicted to dipping apples in this (http://www.skinnytaste.com/2010/11/pumpkin-pie-dip.html). Enjoy by the bowlful!

I’m in SF and the price for regular gas is $4.77 YIKES! So ridiculous

Reply

Brooke smiling with the candy is such an adorable picture. I can’t wait to see her halloween costume pics!

I LOVE a good rainy day (especially if it includes a thunderstorm).

Wow, gas prices there are SO HIGH.

Reply

I love the look of pure joy on Brooke’s face with all that candy in front of her….she was probably dying to say “MOM…what are you trying to decide on…get all three!!”

Fav soup currently (i go through phases) Split pea ( i think its a pregnancy thing)

I absolutely love rainy days. My favorite thing is to go for a long run in warm rain then curl up comfy clothes and watch movies and read blogs:)

I’ve never tried caramel candy corn but I doubt we can get it here in Cananda…they’re boring that way. I’ll have to settle for regular for now but heading to Palm Springs in December so will have to give it a try.

Have a rockin’ Friday!!

Reply

I have a huge bag of that caramel candy corn…GO FOR IT. It’s worth it.

Reply

I have never done a book club but it sounds like fun. I have several books going right now but never take the time to sit down and read – stupid Netflix. I have White Jacket Required and Quitter that I want to read.

My husband makes this amazing chicken noodle soup from scratch that I am going to have to make a request for soon. It has TONS of fresh herbs and is so light and yummy, I need some asap.

Have fun this weekend!!!

Reply

Oh I got really excited when I saw the apple dip in your picture! My friend was over last night and brought the BEST dip. She just gave me the rough outlines of the recipe but it was something like 1 container of pumpkin cream cheese from Bruggers (does that exist outside of the East Coast?), an equal amount of marshmallow fluff (!!!) and pumpkin pie spice. It was so good. We couldn’t stop eating it!

Reply

I like the occasional rainy day here and there, but that’s about it. I’m an AZ girl through and through and love my sunshine. :) As for the candy corn? I can never get myself to buy anything besides the original. It’s truly just the best, and I can’t imagine the other flavors possibly being as good!

Reply

If you would have asked me last week if I like rainy days, I would have said definitely! I love the warm and cozy feeling of being inside when it’s all doom and gloom outside. But now? After a week of nothing but rain and wind? Do.not.want! Give me back my sunshine please!

Reply

I’ve had that apple dip and it is seriously life changing. So delicious.

My favorite soup is a three way tie between broccoli cheese, French onion and baked potato. Mmmmm.

Reply

Rainy days are my favorite! Especially with a cup of tea and a snuggly blanket. Chick flicks don’t hurt either ;)

Reply

Yep… the baby is WAY too smiley with candy in her lap… she’s gonna be a sugar lovah – for sure! :)

Reply

We went to Costco last night too!! Twinners! :)

That dip sounds amazing!

And yes, Brooke is gonna loooovveee candy!! I can totally tell.

Reply

See after getting the caramel candy corn last week, I wish I would have gotten Milk Duds instead. Candy corn should stick to ONE flavor. The chocolate caramel, caramel and candy apple are just … meh. Borderline … blah!

But, you can’t have enough regular candy corn.

You just can’t!

Reply

LOVE that photo of Brooke with the candy, it’s hilarious. As is you ODing on the fake tan. I’ve done that before!!!

I enjoyed yesterday’s rainy day too…we watched Netflix and ate banana bread. Not a bad day at all!!!

Reply

I like rainy days! They are the perfect excuse for staying in bed and cuddling. And movie watching.

My favorite soup is broccoli cheddar! Yum!!

Reply

Never been in a book club but really should be. They sound so fun! I just read Gone Girl and couldn’t put it down. Def recommend it! I love rainy days when I can stay inside and eat soup all day. I really like tomato soup but only if it has a grilled cheese sandwich to go with it. I also love the lobster bisque at the Nordstrom cafe. Yumm!!

Reply

Rainy days are my FAVORITE! Everyone that knows me thinks I’m a weirdo but I think they just make everything seem so cozy! I tried candy corn that are “caramel apple” flavor and they were GROSS! I say just stick with the original. My favorite soup is an italian soup called ribollita. It is delicious, filled with beans and spinach and stuff like that. And the best part is: chunks of day old bread are thrown in there to make it super hearty, topped with a drizzle of olive oil MMMM

Reply

That picture of Brooke with the candy corn is awesome. :)

I LOVE rainy days as they come so infrequently in south Texas. But when they do arrive it always means cooler weather which gives me the perfect excuse to curl up on the couch all day and watch TV.

I think you definitely should have gone with the original candy corn at Target. I’ve never had the caramel kind but the original is so good that I just don’t think it could get any better.

Everyone in our book club got crazy busy this fall (many of us are teachers) and we haven’t met to talk about our last book – LIttle women yet… we were supposed to in August!

Reply

Haha, girl I saw your picture on Instagram (or was it Twitter?!) and I loveeee the original — but the carmel is pretty good too. It’s the pumpkin-shaped ones that kill me! I swear they are made for popping into your mouth!

Reply

The caramel candy corn is pretty good, its a nice change from the original if you get burned out on it. If you can find it, I highly recommend the green apple candy corn, so so so good!

Reply

Not in book club, they remind me too much of school, and i just want to enjoy my books :)
I would LOVE it if it didn’t have the clams lol its alright with the clams
LOVE LOVE LOVE rainy days, good days for cuddling and watching movies :)
never tried it, i’m always leery…it could either be delicious or be so bad…

Reply

I love easy meals like that from Sam’s!

Rainy days are my all-time favorite! When I’m in California, people think I’m crazy because I get sick of the sunny weather all the time. I’m all about overcast days and rain–probably because it’s my favorite running weather.

Reply

Hahaha, I love Brooke’s little smile in the photo with the candy corn!

Whoa, your gas prices are insane! Ours is $3.75 in Minneapolis!

Not in a book club but I’m in a Bible study–does that count?

My favorite soup is black bean from Panera!

I love rainy days that involve snacks, pajamas, and movies!

Have a great weekend, Janae!

Reply

I would love to be in a book club! I am reading Gone Girl right now, but I seriously just started, so I can’t say yet whether it’s good or not.

I love soup. Right now, I would love some spicy chicken tortilla soup. I do love clam chowder, especially up in the northeast!

Reply

Love the rainy days around here. :)

And yes gas prices are nuts. $4.69 by my house :(

I have never been in a book club, but I think it’d be fun. It would help expand my book readings across genres. I usually stick to urban fantasy/sci fi, but every now and then I like to branch out with something different. How did you find your book club?

Now I want to hit up Costco and get that clam chowder.

Favorite soup is cauliflower soup. Hungarian staple :) with mini dumplings. yum.

Reply

That soup sounds awesome… I’d love the recipe! :)

Reply

I have always wanted to join a book club but I’ve just never done it. That’s it, you’ve convinced me. I’m going to find a book club to join!

Reply

I am going to add that book to my “To Read” list. I love my book club too.

It rained down here in San Diego too and I lovvvvvvved it. We don’t get very much rain, so when we do, I embrace it! I still think it’s SO cool that you live in CA now. You’re far away, but way closer and we had the same rain!

Reply

You crack me up! I LOVE rainy days and was definitely enjoying it up in Marin, too! I can’t believe you didn’t buy your beloved candy corn! What was going on?! ;)

Reply

That top pic of Brooke is adorable! Book club rules! Right now I’m reading Pictures of You by Caroline Leavitt. I’m not very far, but so far, so good. I’m eating the tortilla soup from Costco as I type. It’s pretty good, but I’ve had better.

Reply

Hahaha I totally have that same problem in the candy aisle. My solution: during October I make it a rule to always have candy corn on hand, I would be I festive otherwise right ? :)

Boo to Cali gas prices, they bring it up on the news every single day lately they’re so high!

Reply

I will apologize in advance for not remembering what this post was about at all but Oh my goodness brooke is so stinking cute. Every single picture of her completely melts my heart. :)

Reply

Haha funny story, one time I was eating milk duds and it took out my crown on my tooth!

The title of this post actually made me LOL from my Google Reader.

You secret reading fiend! I had no idea you were a book club kind of girl (outside of running books that is). That is so rad. Keep us updated on what else you are reading!

p.s. I’m all yours Saturday if you have any free time, I know your weekend is probably more chaotic than originally planned now that you are running Nike. I can meet you wherever! You’ve got my digits!

Those cheez-its look absolutely delicious (guilty pleasure of mine #sorrynotsorry). I always go to the store hungry too and end up buying way more than I actually need. Usually whatever is on my list doesn’t make it into the cart… oops :)

My mom forced me to be part of a book club when I was in elementary school. I just went to hang out with my friends and eat the food. I remember one particular Friday night with make-your-own ice cream sundaes. Count me in!
I don’t like clam chowder, despite being a born and bred New Englander. Not a seafood fan at all. I’m pretty much disowned during family functions.

Have a good run!

i’m pretty sure you have the cutest baby in the world!! she’s adorable!

i’m so happy you mentioned that book because i’ve been looking for a new book to read. Definitely going to check this one out!

I love Boudin also, yum!! The book club looks like so much fun!

I am actually in a book club! It’s going a bit slow, and not everyone reads the book every time (including myself), but it’s a nice way to get together with the girls.

I absolutely love rainy days. I think they are fantastic!

I like clam chowder as well and I’m kicking myself we didn’t go to Boudin when we were in SF last week!

So funny, I was in Target the other night as well and couldn’t decide between the carmel candy corn or regular…went with the regular, always a fantastic choice ;)

Reply

Favorite soup would have to be good split pea soup (must have a few shakes of Tabasco sauce in it!). I don’t have it often, but I enjoy it the most!

Reply

Ok, so you have to tell me some of your favorite books that you have been reading lately. My book list is getting low. Boo! I am reading Gone Girl right now…but I’m almost done & I need some more recommendations…if you want to share :)

Woah Janae! I thought the $3.90/gal gas that I filled my tank with the other day was bad. You guys have it rough out there! Want me to mail you a few jugs? I’m sure USPS won’t charge THAT much to ship 15 gallons of flammable fluid…

Reply

OMG! Your gas prices are insane! Costco usually had good prices! Have you tried any of the festive candy corns? I stick with the original, but have been tempted to try the new ones.

Reply

I love book club…..but it’s more like Wine and great food club. Same thing. Adorable picture of Brooke!

Reply

I am not in a book club. But I love to read. I love historical romance novels but also anything by Reich. It has to have a good story line as well as some romance.

Favorite soup, gosh, I love love soup, so its kinda hard to pick a favorite. Right now, it’d have to be white chicken and corn chowder (seriously easy to make and yum) I’ll even tell you how to make it :) start off with 4 strips of bacon (okay, I use 6…) but anyways…. cut up your bacon and cook till a bit crisp. While thats cooking, take a whole rotisserie chicken (I get bbq) and take all the meat off of it. Also, take 4 ears of corn and slice the corn off the cobb and set aside (all you do is just take your knife and slice it down the side of the cob, the corn will come right off) then add in about 1 cup of onions. Cook till onions are clear. Add in 3 tablespoons of flour. (just sprinkle it over and it will coat the onions and bacon) cook a few minutes till the flour browns up just a bit. Then add in 15oz of chicken broth then 3 cups of whole milk (I do use 2 percent, but on the days I’m yumming it up, I use whole milk) add the cobs to the mix and cook for about 15 minutes. Then, remove the cobb and add in your chicken and corn. Cook for 15 minutes more till heated through. I like my corn to still be kinda crunchy, you might like it a bit softer, so you can cook it till the corn is to where you want it. Add salt and pepper to taste. YUM!

I like rainy days as long as my house is already clean and there is something good on tv :) like NCIS marathons…. :)

I do not like caramel corn, nor candy corn…nor any other corn confection. If something is to sweet, I just can’t stomach it.
