Skipping Workouts

Meet my best friend, the fan.  No air conditioner (we do have a heater) plus a broken swamp cooler = extreme heat temperatures.  Mr. Whitey (the fan’s name) comes with me from room to room to help prevent me dying from heat exhaustion.

(in case you were wondering, that black thing taped to the wall behind the tv is our antenna)

I came home from work wanting to get in a killer weight session followed by a good amount of time foam rolling but as you can tell that didn’t happen.  I did a mile warm-up on the treadmill and then got tired and laid on the ground.  Old seasons of Biggest Loser and stalking blogs sounded way better to me.  The foam roller was used for something….a pillow.   This was the sight that Billy got to come home to when he got back from his tempo run.  Lucky lucky man.  I have really got to stop wearing perfectly matching workout clothes.

After a shower it was time for dinner.  Billy made me a froached egg and turkey sandwich on a Costco fresh from the bakery toasted asiago cheese bagel.

I have never loved fruit more than I do lately.  I have to have at least 2 servings at every meal.  My fruit obsession has even surpassed my desire for donuts.  Really, if you are thinking about getting pregnant please know beforehand that it does WEIRD things to your tastebuds, body and mind.

Billy had a softball game after dinner but the other team didn’t show up (they must have found out they were playing against Billy and got scared of losing 30-0).   Instead his team just practiced for a little while.

We had a very important errand to run after softball.

I am teaching the Human Sexuality unit in my health class and it is time for them to learn about the different parts of the reproductive systems.   I have them use candy and goldfish;) to make their diagrams and label them…..most effective teaching strategy ever.

Last but not least, I thought a popsicle would solve my heat problems but it actually just created more problems.

Taking a self portrait of your stomach with a DSLR is tough work.

I only eat bagels out east because that is where they taste best. Something about the altitude in Colorado and Wyoming that doesn’t make them taste nearly as good. I am definitely fueling with bagels before my race this weekend.

Reply

You are so right. The bagels I had in NYC were the best things in the world! Good luck on your race this weekend, you are going to rock it!

Reply

Those mountains in the background are so pretty! Skipping a workout is wonderful at times. I’ve never tried out a foam roller (as a pillow or otherwise) but hear great things about them.

Reply

Come visit and we will go running in the mountains:) You are right, it truly was great to skip the workout:)

Reply

The foam roller does not look like a comfy pillow!

We don’t have AC–just a little fan, good thing it usually doesn’t get too hot for too many days in MN.

My biggest reason for skipping a workout is something hurts or kinda hurts…better to take a rest day or two than push through;-)

Stay cool today Janae! Do they have AC where you teach?

Reply

It wasn’t comfy at all but I was too lazy to go get a real one! YES, we have ac at school and it is on full blast wahoo:) I am glad it doesn’t get too hot in MN! You are so right..better to take a day or two off rather than being forced to be out for months because the injury gets worse!

Reply

I actually ended up skipping my workout this morning… I was exhausted and had the worst time sleeping last night. I figured it was more beneficial to get some extra shut eye then force myself to the gym. No biggie! Enjoy your Thursday!

Reply

I am so so sorry that you had a hard time sleeping last night, that is the worst. Good call on skipping the workout, our bodies NEED SLEEP! Hope you have a great Thursday too!

Reply

In science class, I once made a huge diagram of the digestive system with candy. Totally got an A on that.

I eat a bagel everyday. Cheese bagels are definitely the best!

We have central air, thank goodness. Then again, we are so cheap that we only turn it on if absolutely necessary. We put ceiling fans in all of the rooms of the house instead.

Reply

I should try that for the digestive system too…brilliant. I love your love for bagels and someday we better be eating them together before a race:) How do you feel about that?

Reply

Sounds like a plan to me!

Reply

I’ve skipped workouts when I’m not feeling it. I actually don’t plan rest days just because I know those are the days I’ll want to work out. Then the days I don’t want to run-I don’t!

I bought half the grocery store last time I left…nevermind I’m moving in four days…

Reply

Half the grocery store….can I come over for dinner;) Good luck with your move!

Reply

You def need to take a picture of one of these candy reproductive system diagrams. That seems like a sight! ;)

Reply

I totally will!! Next post! Thanks Tiffany:) Have a great day!

Reply

I love that you use candy to teach the reproductive system! You sound like a fun teacher!

I would die without an AC, but we haven’t had to turn it on yet this year.

I eat whole wheat bagel thins almots every day. But, I really love big doughy everything bagels. I just don’t love their calories!

Reply

Big doughy bagels are the best things in the world….just foget they have calories:)

Reply

I don’t know how I’d make it w/o AC. Seriously. We’ve already turned it on a few times.

Blueberry bagels are my FAVORITE! Yuuuummmmmy!!!

Who doesn’t skip their workouts every now and then? My usual “excuse” is just I’m too tired and the warm, comfy bed is much more appealing at 5am than the gym. I feel no guilt. I figure if you can talk yourself out of it, your body must really need a break… that is assuming you don’t talk yourself out of it everyday, of couse. :)

Reply

Okay now I NEED a blueberry bagel with strawberry cream cheese ha:) I feel like some blogs I read NEVER skip their workouts…but they are crazy! You are so right that if we can talk ourself out of it then you really need the break!

Reply

Wow I just tried the froached egg and I don’t think I will ever eat any other kind again. This is genius.

Reply

TERESA!! I am so glad you love it. I am the same way now and when I get eggs at a hotel or restaurant they don’t taste nearly as good. Have an amazing day Teresa!

Reply

Wow, you are such a trooper without A/C. I don’t think I could do it. Of course, we’re still in this silly hotel, so there’s plenty of (free) air conditioning around here! ;)

Reply

I can’t imagine being in a hotel for this long! Is the end in sight yet?

Reply

Yes haha! We should close on the house 2 weeks from today, and then we’ll move in on that Saturday (June 2nd). Thank goodness!! :)

Reply

We don’t have central air but we do have a window A/C unit that usually only cools our bedroom… not fun when it gets super hot since we are on the top floor of our building!

Reply

Top floor and no central air….you better eat a lot of ice cream and popsicles to stay cool this summer!

Reply

I thought i was the only person in the world who combined eggs and turkey together into one delicious sandwich (on an everything or pumpernickle bagel)!!!!! i will have to try your froached egg – usually i just fry the egg up!

i have central AC but it hasnt been too too warm in boston yet.

and i skip workouts if im feeling super dooper tired or if there is a better option (like hanging out with friends eating/drinking).

Reply

One more reason we are bf’s…..eggs and turkey sandwiches are the best. I need to try the pumpernickel bagels and let me know what you think of the fro ached egg. Hanging with friends and eating is always a better option ha:) Have a great day!

Reply

I’ll skip a workout to go out to dinner! :)

Reply

I will too…especially if the dinner is free:)

Reply

Oh gosh, I would die without ACs! Luckily most places in Mumbai are air conditioned, otherwise I don’t know how I’d manage the heat! I rarely skip workouts but if I do, chances are there’s a good enough reason..and trust me, if I were pregnant, that would be enough for me to justify missing a few :)!

Reply

I bet it gets CRAZY CRAZY hot in Mumbai…I can’t imagine! HAHAH good to know that you think pregnancy is a good reason too:) Have an amazing day!

Reply

Fruit (more specifically watermelon) has been my best friend through this pregnancy too. I just can’t get enough. The heat has arrived here and has been 30C (I’m Canadian and too lazy to figure out the conversion) every day this week and I am thankful my son has the same heat tolerance as me :)

The last thing I bought at the store was a jumbo root beer freezie!

Reply

What is it with watermelon?!?! I seriously can’t stop eating it! What is a freezie? A popsicle??

Reply

It’s like a Popsicle with no stick and in a plastic tube. The root beer ones are my favourite especially when they are as long as my arm :) What do you guys call them?

Reply

What is a swamp cooler!? And I bought ice cream and rice crackers… it was a random mix but fantastic and very necessary.

Reply

Best mix ever ha:) A swamp cooler is one of those little units that you connect to the window…so a window air conditioning unit. It pretty much only cools down the room that it is in.

Reply

We have AC, but we also have 2 swamp coolers still in our house, but we never turn them on. The AC has had to come on a couple times this year (when it was 89 degrees in FEBRUARY!), and I have a feeling they will be on for good soon. It’s supposed to be over 90 next week. Luckily, we have a lot of shade at our house so it helps.

I rarely eat bagels, but I used to eat them all the time. We had this local bagel place (Bubba’s Bagels – oh how I miss it!) and they had every type of bagel you could imagine. My favorite was the cinnamon chocolate chip bagel with chocolate chip cream cheese and peanut butter. Extra healthy. :)

Reply

89 in february, that is plain old crazy sauce. I seriously can’t imagine. Bubba’s sounds good….your favorite is definitely my favorite:) Cinnamon sugar bagels are always amazing too. Have a great day Natalie!

Reply

Fruit…popsicles…necessary foam rolling – we’re on the same page this week again!

Reply

Seriously, your pictures of watermelon always make me drool ha. You are motivating me to get in a pool workout! I love that we are due only a few days apart!

Reply

Ha! We have a window AC unit…it sucks. I’m counting down the days until find a new house!

Reply

I hope you get into that new house ASAP and until then popsicles will help cool you and your cutest family down!

Reply

Hi Janae! I’ve been reading you blog for a few weeks now and I just wanted to say that you have the BEST view at your husband’s softball games, it’s breathtaking! I’m surrounded by cornfields at my boyfriend’s games :) Best of luck during your pregnancy!

Reply

HEY EMILY!!! Thank you so much for your comment. Seriously, I am going to miss the views! Thanks for the good luck and hope you are having an amazing day!

Reply

Ive never heard of a swamp cooler!
We have had our AC no for months now. I am always hot!
favorite bagel flavor is def everything or garlic
reason i skip my workout is usually if i am too busy or have other stuff to do since my training is at certain times.
Haha i love your “teaching method” cracks me up!

Reply

HEY YOU! A swamp cooler is one of those little AC units that you hook up to your window:) Now you have me craving a garlic bagel, yum!

Reply

we have central AC in our apartment and we tried to last as long as we could without out but its so humid outside that if we dont turn it on, the cat litter smell is terrible :( so yeah, now we have it on. lol

that bagel looks SO good! everything bagel is my fave!

last trip to the grocery store was fun since we shopped for BBQing…ummm favorite purchase was avocados to make guac :)

i dont really tend to skip workouts but its usually bc i’m either too sick, or bc something super important like free food came up ;)

Reply

I don’t know how I would deal with the humidity…I am not good with that. BBQs and avocados, you are making me drool!!!! Free food is always more important than a workout!

Reply

The baseball field is gorgeous! I love your belly- it’s getting nice and round!
My favorite bagel used to be a toasted, dry cheese bagel. Now I prefer cinnamon raisin with apple butter or a plain blueberry one.

Reply

Okay your bagel preferences now are making me drool. Come visit and I will take you to all the gorgeous spots in Utah:) Have an amazing day Abby!

Reply

What the heck is a swamp cooler??? If we didn’t have AC I couldn’t make it more than 10 min through a workout either.

I am experiencing a bit of a veggie aversion too….. but I can’t get enough fruit into my mouth! I still eat a salad for lunch, but other than that I can’t stand the thought of raw vegetables. No I am not pregnant, just really picky right now I guess.

Blueberry bagels.

Reply

Let’s just eat fruit all summer long…veggies can wait a few months:) A swamp cooler is a little ac unit that you hook up to your window…it really only cools down the room it is in. Blueberry bagels are the bomb.com and I hope you get one soon with a big side of fruit!

Reply

If I have to skip a workout it is work related and makes me sad! Cinnamon raisin bagels are my weakness in liiiiife.

Reply

Cinnamon raisin= heaven! Why does work think it is more important than our workouts?

Reply

I have central air and yes we have had to turn it on. I love in Utah that there are some weeks where I have the AC on one day and the heater the next. I can’t believe you have no AC and are pregnant!! I feel so bad for you. I would seriously die. I slept with my window open when I was pregnant with my first. In Logan. In December. Lol. You will just have to eat that many more Oreo shakes in the summer to keep your core temperature down ;)

Reply

YOUR BACK!!!! I want to hear all about Florida:) I think I will be at my parent’s house A LOT this summer to dodge the heat!

Reply

Any lesson that involved goldfish and candy would be a winner in my book.

I Didn’t realize how difficult self portraits are with a DSLR camera until I Tried it the other day… it was like half my face and WAY closer than I’d prefer.

I’ll stick to instagram thankyouverymuch.

Reply

Isn’t it crazy how hard it is to do a self-portrait with a DSLR? I want to follow you on Instagram!

Reply

My username is elizparent :) Yay for instagram!

On an almost related note, our team for today’s “Brand Olympics” (aka adult field day) is “Winstagram” hehe

Reply

No AC. Nothing. I live on the eighth floor of my apartment building and I’m slowing dyyyyyyying. My strategy: I’ve started taking my laptop out onto my concrete balcony and sit there until I’ve started shivering and the sun has gone down (it gets chilly fast at night). So maybe then my body will have cooled down enough I can fall asleep really fast and not realize what a sauna my bedroom is.

Reply

NOOOOOO I am so sorry you don’t have AC and you are on the 8th floor. Whenever I feel like complaining I will think about you and what you are going through. You better eat a lot of popsicles and ice cream to cool you down.

Reply

Yes we have AC but I try to keep it off until it is unbearable…I love the fresh air and windows open but my hubby prefers the AC!

I hardly ever go to the grocery store anymore I am a costco girl but last night we needed milk, bananas, and creamer.

It is killing me right now to not bend my knee so I have been focusing on weight lifting and core work. I am being forced to take a mini break from running.

Reply

Fresh air really is the best. I love that you are a costco girl too. Isn’t it crazy how cheap their bananas are. Good for you to listen to your body and take a break from running…weights and core will help your running so much in the long run too! Have an amazing day Stacey!

Reply

I had to skip my tempo run this morning :( But maybe later today…who I am kidding! LOL!

Reply

everything bagel with vegetable cream cheese. I could eat one per day.

Reply

Love that baby girl is “catching” your popsicle drips :)

A/C has not been on yet in Maryland, but it’s been close.

Last grocery store run included ice cream cake for Daddio’s birthday, plus lemonade and oj for the kids.

Unfortunately, kid or husband plans are usually the cause of me cancelling or postponing workouts. Be sure to get a signed contract about equal workout time before the bambino arrives :)

PLEASE can you share some of the students’ diagrams? I’m so very curious. And I have a few more of these conversations coming up in my home!!!

Reply

Skipping workouts?
Realizing that family and friends come first!

Don’t give any power to voice inside your head saying “but you would have never skipped a workout before.” you are SO much smarter than that voice!! I mean your watching Jepardy and stuff. :)

Have a great day, friend.

Reply

AC. And living in the South, it has been on for a while now. In fact, we never really needed the heat this winter.
Last trip to the grocery store was for baking supplies and sandwich stuff.
Cinnamon Crunch bagels from Panera Bread.
I skip workouts when I have over-trained or feel some sort of tweak. But more often than not I adapt my workouts rather than skip them all together.

I bet there are some students in your class who will never look at that candy the same way again. But super creative!

Reply

AC units are very rare where we live (Seattle/Tacoma area) because it only gets very hot for two to three weeks every year. We are one of the lucky families who lives in a house with AC. Granted, our AC unit is the kind that is in hotel rooms I’ll take what I can get!

Reply

Oh I don’t know what a swamp cooler is, I’m going to have to google that one!!

Reply

We have an AC, but don’t use it much. Temps and humidity here are much easier to deal with than the Midwest. The first summer here, we didn’t use AC at all. Last summer we did a bit. I still laugh at people when they talk about “humid days” here. Yeah right!

Just had a bagel for breakfast! It was jalapeno cheddar toasted with whipped cream cheese, my fav! My local grocery store makes them. So fresh!

What did you buy at your last trip to the grocery store? Four jalapeno cheddar bagels and that was all. =)

If you ever do skip out on your workouts….what is the most common reason for doing so? Today it was my sinuses. My head wants to explode as we speak.

Reply

No AC and our place gets majorly HOT. So one day a few years ago after a 20 miler on a hot summer day I went to Home Depot and dropped way too much $$ on one of those standing AC units you can roll room to room. So now in the summer our bedroom is nice and chilly. And our electric bill is huge.

I have been skipping workouts all week. No good excuse at all.

Reply

Oh my gosh I would totally die if I didn’t have AC!! I do not know how you do it…..or how you even lasted a full mile on the treadmill without AC. You are my hero!

I love watching softball. So fun….just as long as they don’t make me play. I suck so bad!!

Reply

Oh I wish I could send you some cool temps…It’s only going to be 60 here and Friday night, it will actually dip down to 37*! Yikes! Too cold for me this time of year!

I think you have your teaching methods on point! Food = more likely to pay attention…may have to that with my college advisees!! ha ha!

Reply

We have a window A/C unit but we surrendered it to the kids’ room when they were born. It hasn’t been warm enough here to break it out yet. Probably won’t need it for quite some time still.

I wish I had a teacher like you for health. I think she glossed over A LOT and talked really fast!

Reply

I have a built-in AC unit in my apartment and honestly I would die without it. We have floor to ceiling windows and my apartment heats up like a sauna in the summer. I’d never sleep if it weren’t for that AC!

I love love love pumpernickel bagels. They are my fav.

Reply

I skip a workout when I am tried, really sick, or rundown. There is no problem with that!

And how are you going to teach with that candy?! I am curious….haha.

Have a great day!

Reply

Oh girl, I relate to having no AC either. Goodness, it can be a killer in the summer! At least I have a heater too! I actually skipped my super early workout this morning in favour of some HIIT a little later. It was nice to sleep in a bit. I haven’t had a bagel in waaay too long. Maybe I should change that?

Reply

We have AC, but I still had to buy a box fan this past summer when I was pregnant with Peyton. Did I mention, we also have a ceiling fan, but the box fan was my best friend during my summer pregnancy. I absolutely love bagels and my favorite are Everything Bagels. I went to the grocery store with my sister yesterday, but she did all the shopping and I just bought strawberries.
If I skip workouts, it’s because I’m way too tired!

Reply

Can you just point to yourself and show the students that THIS is a result of what you’re teaching them?

Hahahhaahah yes I am 5 years old mentally.

Reply

I was beginning to wonder if you ever skip…although it doesn’t completely count since you at least ran a mile! I have to skip a bunch because working nights get me all screwed up and I get super tired. Rest and recovery is good for us to, you know!

Reply

Our house in Utah has a heater and air conditioner, but our lucky tenants get to use that. We’re currently living in New Zealand and don’t get either one. It definitely doesn’t get hot enough to need an AC, but it gets super cold, and there aren’t hardly any homes with heaters. Brrrr.

I usually dislike bagels, except when I’m pregnant. Then I could eat them all day ever day.

I don’t usually skip workouts except when I’m crazy tired. Being pregnant and up all night with kiddies sometimes will do that to me. Lots of times though I find that if I can still get some kind of a workout in I don’t feel quite as tired.

Reply

I have been sick ALL week and the thought of working out kills me! I still have to be at work (yes I have infected everyone that I have come in contact with) but when I get home I just want to crash! We are going on 4 days of no workouts! I attempted one yesterday, but since all of my “sickness” is in my chest I thought I was going to die. :)
I live in the south, so yep, I have already turned my AC on. :)

Reply

I never thought to use the foam roller as a pillow.. I like your style =)

I often skip a work out because the idea of getting out of my PJs is the most daunting thought of my life..

And we have a swamp cooler as well… apparently central AC is hard to come by in the north east and also adds about $800 more dollars to your rent… I’ll sweat thank you very much.

Reply

I’m a HUGE fan of Ezekiel sprouted bagels. I’ve only tried the cinnamon raisin flavor but I’m almost certain the other flavors are just as amazing! Definitely worth trying if you’re a big bagel lover

Reply

I just had a new ac placed in my place last summer, so I’m ready to cut it back on pretty soon. It’s getting warmer out here in Long Beach, CA.
My fav bagel is cinnamon raisin
My last grocery trip involved buying oranges, strawberries and cream laughing cow cream cheese spread, POM pomegranate juice, Belvita breakfast crackers/cookies, lettuce, Chobani Champions Berry Yogurt,
My latest excuse for not working out- shoulder tendonitis, OUCH!

Reply

We don’t have an AC right now but we need to buy one!! It is starting to get hot in NYC!

I love bagels – everything bagel with lox & cream cheese is my absolute fav! Makes me hungry just thinking about it ;)
