This morning I woke up and got out of bed to get on the treadmill but five minutes later I found myself back in bed.  Pregnancy has been really good for me because it has changed my perspective on exercise.  Before I would exercise no matter what, every day for the perfect amount of time.  Now if I feel good then sure I will get in a workout but if my body actually needs to sleep in and go through the McDonalds drive thru in the morning instead then I will choose that option.

I sure did want some of their pancakes but I already had a bfast packed (along with a lb of watermelon) so I stuck to my favorite craving lately of lemonade.   It really is amazing how $1 can buy me so much happiness.

Would you believe me if I told you I couldn’t find my brush this morning? I clearly found a little too much bronzer though.

A major life accomplishment happened today and I ate broccoli for the first time since January 3rd.  It didn’t make me die but at the same time I couldn’t believe that I use to eat that 8 cups of that stuff daily.  I won’t be trying raw broccoli for a while but might try the heavily buttered/steamed until there are no longer any nutrients/cut up into tiny pieces variety again. Now this is an appetizing photo:

I really don’t know why I am posting this picture.  Hmmm.

I absolutely LOVE hearing about new runners and how popular running has become.  It makes me really happy to know that so many other people are out enjoying that same endorphin high that I do and that they too have a love for spending $100 to get up at 4 a.m. and run a crazy amount of miles with strangers.

This article from Runner’s World gave me the chills when I read that ‘there were more than 7 million women finishers at US road races in 2011, and women now constitute 53 percent of the fields for such races.’  WOW, way to go!

Keep on running everyone and keep on getting your friends and family addicted to the best sport in the world:)

Have you ever done a women’s only race? Where? Do you ever want to do a women’s only race?

-I have only done a women’s only bike century.  I really want to do Nike’s Women’s Marathon in San Francisco.

Do you eat the majority of your veggies raw, steamed or roasted?

Do you think that ‘running’ and ‘races’ is just a trend or do you think that it will continue to grow and stay really popular?

Steamed or roasted! Don’t worry, I wear way too much bronzed too, it’s a good!

That should say its all good! Sorry, I pad auto corrector.

I ran the Tinkerbell Half. Not necessarily for women only BUT it was geared toward women and I’m pretty sure would only allow awards to go to women.
I usually eat my veggies steamed but I like them BEST on the grill with Balsamic Vinagarette.
Running can be addictive and it’s a simple form of exercising. You don’t have to pay for a gym. You can even take the kids along. I think it will be around for a while.

I did the Nike Women’s in SF! It was AMAZING. Seriously, it was an awesome awesome race. I really want to do it again!!! Like SO BADLY. Maybe 2013??

I think running will continue to grow in popularity as it becomes more and more accessible due to increased amounts of races every year in all different areas! When I was growing up, you would be hard pressed to find a local race in my small hometown…but now they hold 5 every year!! So awesome :)

Definitely steamed or roasted. Roasted is the best but steamed if I am in a time crunch. Raw veggies = gross.

The Nike Women’s Marathon in San Fran sounds like my dream come true. I think I need to make my way to the west coast ASAP!

Reply

I’ve never run an all-women’s race but I think that would be so fun! And I love my veggies roasted.

I love my vegetables raw.

I ran the Women’s Half Marathon in St. Petersburg, Florida. It was fun (and very pink)! Guys could participate, but there weren’t too many.

I think a major reason many people start running, especially women, is because it’s such a trend, but then those people find out how amazing it feels to “be a runner” and they end up sticking with it! So I guess I’m predicting the increase will continue : )

I love my veggies raw, steamed, roasted, and grilled!! Roasted cauliflower is truly one of my favorite foods…I eat it at least 5 times a week. I also like to roast green beans until they get crispy on the outside! Grilled onions, pepper, and squash are so good. Clearly I love veggies :) I think running will continue to grow or at least maintain its popularity. As more people commit to exercise, I think people will realize the amazing ease of running. It’s one of the few types of exercise where you can just step outside your door and go. Besides, the runner’s high is pretty hard to resist!

Trying to get my wife to run an all womans race next week so my two girls can watch.

I did the Tufts 10k for women in Boston last October. It was a cool experience to be around so many fit women. Although there were a few men in the race which confused me. I did my best to beat all of them.

I eat most of my veggies steamed.

I hope that the running/racing trend is here to stay. It’s a great way for people to feel empowered, make friends, and stay healthy!

I would hope that running and racing will only continue to grow and get more popular. Like you I LOVE seeing new runners, or runners who weren’t so sure of their abilities before, start to really love and enjoy running and enter races! It takes me back to when I first started this awesome sport and makes me excited and grow more of an appreciation for it :-)

I have curly hair, I wish I could brush it and have it look GOOD! LOL!

I hope races stick around, I love them :) I am running a women’s only run in a couple weeks, Run Girlfriend Run in Sandy Oregon.

LOVE McD pancakes, glad you are taking it easy during your pregnancy!

I have not done a womens only race but I really want to do a Diva half in Hawaii and the NWM too!

Reply

I usually eat them steamed or roasted … it’s been steamed waaay more lately because it’s too dang hot to turn on my oven!

Reply

It’s funny how many people has now taken up running. Maybe it’s because the new breed of young runners like Ryan Hall has inpired them. Hopefully this ‘trend’ will now fade away, the more people running or racing the better!

Reply

I eat most of my veggies steamed or roasted, I have a hard time eating raw veggies.

I DID do a women only race! Springfield, Missouri’s Girls Just Want to Run. It was awesome so see so many female runners together (1000 runners). It made up for the time I entered a race (my first duathalon) to find out I was one of 4 female runners in the ENTIRE race. I like to think I’m a pretty good athlete but, all male competition is fierce. I’d love to do another all female race sometime though.

Reply

The tri I did on the weekend was only ladies and I loved it! So much girl power :) haha
Most raw, but loved steamed too!
I think they are only going to get more popular, and with fun little twists to them too!

Reply

This is too funny. I promise you that I have been wanting McD’s pancakes for breakfast all week. I was actually going to stop this morning, but I had to run another errand before work, so my plan for pancakes was ruined. Boo! Maybe they will happen this weekend :)

I’m actually doing a Womens 5K on May 27th. I’m really excited about it. Most of the women look forward to meeting fireman passing out chocolate at the end…I’m just looking forward to the chocolate.

ROASTED veggies are the best. Last night, my entire dinner was a plate full of roasted squash and zucchini. It was amazing.

About 15 years ago I did one near Missoula, MT that was the Blue Mountain Womens’ Run half marathon. It was so much fun to just have female competitors! The other fun part was that it was gradually uphill the first half, then downhill the second half where we merged with the 10K runners who gave us a super kick towards the end. I wish they still had that one around–I’d travel to it now!

Reply

I’ve never done a women’s race but have a few friends doing the Nike Marathon this year.
I think running will continue to grow in popularity. What other sport involves both men and women, people aged 3 – 99, all participating at the same time?

Reply

SO great that so many women are getting the running bug!

And WAY to go on listening to your body. SO important for you and for your little peanut :)

Reply

I ain’t mad at cha….do what your body is telling you to do.

I love raw veggies. I cut up all the veggies I have and put them in a large bowl to make each of my meals….raw asparagus is pretty good.

Reply

I’d love to do the SF Nike Women’s Race. Perhaps next year I’ll make that my goal race :) It would be nice to travel and also run what seems to be a great one!

I hope running stays popular, its encouraging people to be healthy and active which is such a great thing! The only downside I can think of is that race entries seem to be creeping up a bit due to demand. But personally I don’t mind if I know it means more runners.

I walked NWM (the half) last year, this year I’m running that sucker! I know people who have tried for a few years who haven’t gotten in. Its crazy. Nike is adding on more Women’s Marathons (and halfs) to more city’s this year. I know DC is on the list.

Reply

I hope it continues to be popular! Running has given me so much more confidence in my athletic abilities. I never EVER considered myself athletic until I started running. Now, I’m proud to call myself a runner and an athlete! :)

I ran the Nike Women’s Marathon in SF last October, and it was an unbelievable experience, you MUST run it at some point. There was something incredibly empowering about beasting up and down the crazy hills with a full field of strong women. And I love their logo – “I run to be strong.” I’ve run some of the NYC women’s races, and while they’re good, they have nothing on Nike Women’s in SF.

Reply

I haven’t but it sounds fun! My friend is trying to convince me to do a female only sprint tri in a few months.

Also, I ran my first half last weekend! You have definitely inspired me to keep running even when I don’t want to. I wish I loved it as much as you but running and I have a more love/hate relationship. Ha!

Reply

I would love to do a women’s only race, but haven’t yet.

If it’s not in a salad then …..I always steam my veggies and lather them in a pound of butter and salt b/c that is obviously how to get the most nutrients ;)

I think running will continue to gain popularity since it has been gaining interest since the 80’s… 30 years doesn’t seem like a fad to me. Once people find out how amazing it is they are stuck with it forever and convert all their family and friends. YAY!

Janae…I LOVE your blog! I started reading it in January, and I look so forward to reading it everyday! I only started running about a year ago, but I agree that running is addicting! When I do feel unmotivated your posts always make me go out and get my miles in..although a lot slower than you!
And the NWM in San Fran is definitely on my list of races I would love to do someday. I was so excited when they said they were having an inaugural half in Washington D.C. next Spring for all of us east coasters. :-) And I ran the More/Fitness Women’s half last month in Central Park and it was a blast.. If your ever in NYC in April you should definitely do it!

Reply

I deftly think we are here to stay!! I ran the women’s NY mini two years ago and I will be running it again next month. I am very excited about it. Its a fun race!

I would have to say steamed. I like roasted but that takes too long. We also juice everyday so i guess I get a lot of my veggies that way too.

Happy Weekend!! Woohoo!

Reply

Steamed veggies are good!!! I love that so many women are running! NWM is AWESOME, but it isn’t all women that run it. Men can run too. It’s mostly women though and it’s awesome. I highly recommend it.

I ran the Disney Princess half marathon in Florida.. boys were allowed to run it but couldn’t start in the first couple corrals. It was so much fun dressing up like a princess and running a race!
I think races will stay popular as more people see how awesome running is. I get so excited when my friends/family members decide to start running.
Reading this post makes me want to drive to mcdonalds and get a lemonade. I seriously may need to go buy some right now.

I hope running isn’t just a trend. I think it’ll continue to grow. I just started running and training for my first half 8 weeks ago. Today I did my first 11 miler ever!! It felt great to accomplish something like that. I’m running the Provo Valley half so I hope to meet you and Billy=) so on a creepy note, where did you get that skirt you wore for your friends wedding that happened not to long ago? The light pink one? Those are my sister’s wedding colors too and we’ve looked everywhere!

Reply

Sharsti!!! Congrats on your eleven miler…that is a huge accomplishment! We have to meet up! The skirts are from downeast, I hope they still have them!!!

I eat most veggies steamed…. unless veggies at subway count then I’d say raw. By the way I can’t get over the view of the mountains where you live. OMGosh I’d be in awe if I ever went to Utah. It’s beautiful!!!!!

Reply

I absolutely love broccoli but I just can’t eat the stuff raw- BLEH!

Reply

I have an obsession with roasted veggies. Literally, even if it is boiling hot outside. You better bet I will be heating up that oven for some roasted veggies. They are the best!

Reply

Have you ever done a women’s only race? I haven’t but think it would be a lot of fun.

Do you eat the majority of your veggies raw, steamed or roasted? Right now most of mine are roasted. But as the weather heats up, I’ll shift to mostly raw.

Reply

It made me happy to read that you went back to bed! I don’t know why. Just glad you’re taking care of you and your little bean. It’s amazing how perspectives change once your in charge of growing another human. I had the same mind set about busting through a planned work out no. matter. what. when not pregnant. But I have to say how impressed I am with maintaining your mileage and all the races you’ve done recently! Awesome.

I think “adventure racing” is going to be the next big thing. You know, a 5k through mud and barb wire and swinging tires.

Roasted veggies are the BEST.

“The Pink Series” half-marathon in Park City is AWESOME. It is women only, super organized and beautiful. You should do it… maybe next year :)

glad u got some extra shut-eye, listening to the bod is even more imporant now. :)

that said, thanks for sharing the article, it helped spark the topic for my own post today…don’t worry, i gave u proper credit with a shout-out too…hehe. :) have a great night!

I am in a pool for the Nike!! I want to do it soooooo bad!! Have you ever heard of the first women running in Boston?

http://www.kathrineswitzer.com/index.shtml

That is the link to her story.. it is crazy!!

I feel it will for sure grow.. my fiance and I are huge running freaks and we know for a fact we will engage our children into running as well, and I feel most people (like you and Billy:) and others who love running, will pass that passion on which will keep the sport alive!! And I am going to stop posting now because I could go on for hours about running and races!

Janae, I ran NWM as my 1st marathon in 2010 with Team In Training and it was an AMAZING experience. The hills aren’t nearly as bad as I thought they would be. Most of the course is scenic or at least has entertainment up until the last 6 or so miles around an ugly lake/drainage ditch. Men can run it though. I remember they had to say several times at the start that this was a race for women and ask the men to stop crowding the start line.
I love reading your blog and seeing that baby bump grow =) There have been lots of days where I didn’t really feel like running but I was inspired after reading this.

My husband & recently moved to the bay area. I’ve done a lot of research on races and it seems like it’s a year round thing up here.
I don’t think you’d have any problems finding one at any given time.
Plus we could be BFF’s. lol

I just did a women’s only race this morning! The Dirty Girl Mud Run in Indianapolis!

Reply

I steam or saute my veggies.
I think the running trend is here to stay! Just like biking as there seems to be more and more bike lanes added to cities that have histrionically been very not bike friendly.

Reply

I love broccoli, but I could never eat it raw. Steamed is the best. :-)

I ran an all-women’s 5k in Providence and the Tufts 10k in Boston with my mom. Such a great bonding time!

Reply

I am running the Nike Women’s as my first half in October!

When I was pregnant the only green thing I could eat was broccoli. I ate broccoli and baked potatoes almost every single day of my pregnancy.

Reply

I did the More/Fitness Magazine Women’s Half Marathon in Central Park last month – it was very fun! And I can’t wait for Nike Women’s in October! I am hoping all the ‘girl power’ pushes me to a PR. Bonus that the whole race benefits LLS!

Reply

I love broccoli, I’d be so sad if I didn’t like the taste of it anymore!

Reply

Running is addicting, so if anything, I think it will grow in popularity. It makes me so happy to see so many people at races that all love to run like I do. :) I would love to run a women’s only race. I think it would be great to come together with other women, since we weren’t allowed to run in races not too long ago. I try to remember how lucky I am that I am a runner in 2012 as opposed to 1950.
