Best friends are made while running and eating beignets together.

April 13, 2012

Charlie was BEYOND happy to see us today.  Hopefully he didn’t hurt his tongue from licking Billy’s new beard that he is growing:)

Photo

After hanging out and talking for a little while we drove (yes, drove to go running) to the lake.  Billy did his tempo run, 1 mile warm-up 5 miles @ 6:29 1 mile cool down, while I got to run with my mother in law.  Isn’t that the coolest thing in the world that I get to run with my MIL?!?!  We have been on a lot of runs together and have had so many great conversations, I swear that running brings people closer together.

We did 5 together and then I did 2 more on my own.  She had already done Jillian’s 30-Day Shred in the morning…she is hardcore!  I am a giant.

Photo copy 2

Three hungry runners require proper fueling afterwards, enter in BJ’s.  We started off with their root beer and had to do a cheers because we are really cool like that.

DSC 0005

Another awesomeness about my MIL is that she loves to split things so that we can try more than just one thing off of the menu.  We split the steak salad with grilled veggies, cheese and hard-boiled eggs.

DSC 0006

We also split the veggie pizza with the thickest, doughiest crust ever.  Olives were ripped off as soon as I took the picture.

DSC 0009

The grand finally was a beignet coated in cinnamon sugar and topped with ice cream, strawberries and whip cream.  You know how I have an obsession with donuts lately?  This beignet fulfilled my dreams but I will have more dreams about them tonight and already asked my MIL to take us for donuts tomorrow after our run.  Too bad we can’t live with them again this summer like we did the previous two summers….schools for fools.

DSC 0011

It is supposed to rain today but we are going to run rain or shine.  Running in the rain is the best (as long as it is warm rain:)

New HRG Baby post HERE!! 21 Weeks.

Tell me about YOUR DOG?!?!  What breed?  Favorite things about them?

Do your in-laws workout?

Do you like to run in the rain or do you hit up the treadmill when it is raining?  Does it rain very often where you live?

Have you tried any of Jillian Michael’s workout DVD’s?

Cindi B April 13, 2012 at 6:17 am

What a cute dog! I have an 11 year old Cairn terrier that loves to go hiking with us, but is a bit stocky and short for running; so, last summer, we got my running dog. Emily is a black lab/German Shorthair Pointer mix–all long-leggedy and lean. She LOVES to run with me, but makes me feel so slow in that she barely breaks a trot even when I’m doing intervals with her. Young punk! I have also been able to skijor with her in the winter, which is one of the most fun things in the world–it’s like waterskiing on snow.
We just moved from Colorado to upper Michigan this past summer, so running in rain is new to me here. If it’s not too cold and not pouring, I’ll run in it–otherwise, it’s treadmill time.
I just got a bunch of Jillian’s workout DVDs a couple of weeks ago and have become rather hooked on them! There are very few exercise classes in this little town, so her workouts make for good cross-training.

I have a yellow lab – best dog ever! He was our first baby. My in laws do NOT workout. You are so lucky to be able to run with your family!
I don’t mind running in the rain as long as it’s not a downpour combined with freezing temps – but I think it’s kind of refreshing when it’s just a nice rain and nice temps.
I love the 30 day shred, but that’s the only Jillian DVD I have. My mom tried a yoga one and didn’t really like it.
Have a great day!!

I do 30 Day Shred weekly and love it. I also have some of Bob Harper’s bootcamp dvd’s and I’m pretty sure he is crazier than Jillian! ;) The dog I had growing up was a lab-shepherd mix and he was the best. I would only consider getting another dog if he was either breed. Active and loyal <3

I have a samoyed (a type of Alaskan sled dog). He is actually my sisters but sometimes I think he’s mine. He ate a pacifier 8 months ago and I took him a week ago to get surgery because it was stuck in his intestines. He actually had a similar surgery a year and a half ago because he ate a plastic toy and big and they got stuck in his stomach/intestines. I love him to death but think my sister is going to give him away (she’s the one with the kids – the owners of the pacifier and big).

I have never run with my in-laws. They live in Honduras and think running is crazy. I guess when you have to walk three miles to get to a store you think that running is for fools. According to them, exercise is for the rich because they get to be lazy. Poor people do physical labor all day and don’t need any more exercise when they get home. They are probably right.

I love running in the rain, as long as it’s warm out. It’s so refreshing. I also only love it when I remembered to not wear clothes that become see-through when they are wet. The only annoying thing is trying to dry my shoes out afterwards. Sometimes they are never the same again.

We have two dogs-an australian shephard/golden retriever mix (Mikaya) and a st.bernard/australian shephard mix (Grizzley). I got Mikaya as a 7 week old pup for free back in my college days. She is now 8 and starting to slow down. But, she still hikes and bikes and loves to go swimming in the river. We just adopted Griz back in February. He is certainly a gently giant. Can you tell I adore our dogs? It hardly rains here. It just depends if the air is warm or cold if I am going to run in the rain.

- I have never been a dog person ever since I was about 6 years old and Buffy attacked my hand (quite an interesting story that has changed my feelings for dogs and the movie Dumbo..)
However I am THE cat lady. My cat is named ‘Sovereign’ and he is a huge maine coon, and the sweetest, softest cat in the word. Wuv my wittle kitty!

Do your in-laws workout?
- My MIL is a workout-aholic. I can only hope to be HALF as fit as her when I’m her age. She is fierce!!!

Have you tried any of Jillian Michael’s workout DVD’s?
- I have not, but each time I’m at target I’m just stand there in front of her dvd contemplating if I should buy one!

My in laws golf and walk. I partake in the walking…a good walk to the beach to see sunset is the perfect end to a night on the Cape.

I like running in the rain and snow. It keeps me motivated to keep going and keep going faster ahahah

I have no tried Jillian Michael’s Dvds but I am borrowing one from a friend this weekend and I am super excited!!

Dogs: Annabelle is some sort of doberman mix. Solo is a black and tan coonhound mix.
In-laws: That depends on who you ask. If you ask them, yes. They workout. But when you hear things like “I can barely do a mile on the treadmill, you start to wonder if they are really working out or just hanging out.
I don’t run in the rain. I can’t stand for my feet to be wet.
I don’t think I have tried Jillian. But she annoys me so I can’t imagine I would get through the DVD.

My husband and I have a choc lab, Mousse! I just love him to pieces. He will seriously do anything for a tennis ball and loves the water.

My MIL works out with me all the time, I have to keep up with her haha! We bike the MS-150 (150 miles in two days) every year and train together all the time. I am trying to get her to run a little more too. It is fun to do those things together.

My favorite is running in warm spring rain. I live in VA so spring/fall time is the best time to run bc the humidity in the summer makes is hard to even breathe!

I have yet to try The Shred of anything else Jillian has released but am willing to try anything! I am a huge fan of beachbody DVDs and currently doing the Brazil Butt Lift and Turbofire. They are so FUN!

We have a 7 year old Yorkie, he is the best. He loves to cuddle and play fetch! I love to run in the rain if I am running with a friend, if I am alone, I would probably run on the treadmill. It doesn’t rain too much in Boston, we actually are in need of some rain since its been really dry.

I have done Jillian’s 30 day shred, but I prefer to do the Insanity program, its more intense and I get better results with it, but for a quick workout, I think it would be good.

We have 2 dogs…

Trigger is a puggle (pug/beagle) mix and his main goal in life is to be comfortable. All he needs is a couch and someone to snuggle him and he is set for life. He is the most cuddly dog I have ever met and he likes to sleep like a human at night tucked into the covers.

Bailey is a German Shepherd who thinks she is part cat because she rubs up on everything. She also thinks she is a 5 pound lap dog. However, she is super protective of us and goes from innocent to ferocious if she doesn’t like a stranger. AND she is my 6-month old daughter’s BFF. As soon as we brought Emmalyne home from the hospital Bailey adopted her as her own. Wherever Emmie goes, Bailey follows. Now that Em is more mobile and likes to grab Bailey’s face and eat it, Bailey is perfect and let’s Em do her thing. It’s amazing!

I have a chihuahua and his name is Nacho…he’s 8 1/2 and the craziest little dog ever. He’s not good with other people but once he gets used to you he’s a big ball of love. I love that he still does the tricks I taught him as a puppy (beg, down, roll over) and that when he really wants a treat, he’ll do all three of them in succession without you asking. I also love that he does a butt dance when he’s really happy. He’s a really amusing dog…chihuhuas are small but have the most ridiculous personalities.

Kevins parents are much older so they dont workout…but itd be awesome if they did ;)

i dont mind running if its drizzling…but if its torrential downpour i dont like it. if its in the summer i might grin and bear it but otherwise its the treadmill for me!

I have two sets of inlaws since my husband’s parents both got remarried. One set does not work out at all due to various health problems, but the other set is fairly active and goes to the gym pretty frequently!

My husband is allergic to pets, so we don’t have a dog (although, I’m actually a cat person). I used to volunteer at a local animal shelter and there are so many cats and dogs that need good homes, so it sucks not being able to have a pet. =(

I used to really enjoy running in the rain until I heard that the cushioning in your running shoes never fully recovers after getting wet. Now I just cross-train on rainy days!

My DOGS:
Tip: Actually my dad’s dog, but since my parents moved to NM and left him in my care I’ve begun to claim him as mine and told my dad that he’s not getting Tip back. He’s an australian shepherd/border collie mix and he’s my running buddy. Definitely not a guard dog! He likes to chase bees, butterflies, and grasshoppers and barks at birds… even if they are way up in the electric line.

Melvyn: Maltese. He’s my buddy. If you’re sick he stays by your side. He’s such a sweetie. BUT he marks his territory inside still…

Mildred: Maltese. Melvyn’s “girlfriend”. I love her because she’s just such a dimwit. Seriously, just not the smartest thing in the world, but it’s so funny. I think having puppies really messed her up because I don’t remember her being that ditzy before.

Flake: Mel and Mil’s child. Maltese. She has a lot of the characteristics of Melvyn.

Pippin: Flake’s sister. She’s the mother-er… of kittens… she always wants to take over a litter when the cats have them, and she stayed with my bottle fed kitten and even started lactating. She’s my miracle puppy. When she was born she was the smallest and no one let her eat (her litter had to nurse off of my sister’s jack russel, so there were a lot of pups), so she was largely bottle-fed, and a few years back she was hit by the UPS truck, and managed to survive.

AND

Nataly: Maltese/poodle mix. She’s my oldest, about 12.5 years old. She’s more of a loner, but still loving. But I’m pretty sure she’s going deaf and blind, which kind of makes it difficult. We always joke about her dying, but I’ll be sad when she does.

And, yes, if you were counting that makes SIX dogs.

No in-laws for me…

If it’s WARM I love to run in the rain. But it’s raining on and off right now and it’s 56 and it does not sound appealing.

And I have 3 JM dvds and I do like them, but just don’t feel like they’re enough. I just ordered p90x and I’m super excited to get them!

Your right, running does bring people together. I have a running buddy who’ve I’ve been friends for a while with now but ever since we started running together it’s our friendship is even stronger now.

If I’m running and then all of a sudden it starts raining, I don’t have a problem running in it. But if it’s already raining before my run, I’m likely to just go to the gym and run on the treadmill.

I love my dog Rex, he’s a dobbie Shep mix and he’s pretty cool. He’s very well behaved. I’m like Cesar Millan! constantly on him shhhht!

and my inlaws don’t workout….we’ve gone for hikes though, and my MIL is a retired PT ;) so that helps!

So fun that your MIL runs with you!! My mom works out but isn’t big into running. I have done a couple of the Jillian Michaels DVDs but never really stuck to them. She is hardcore though.

I don’t mind running in the rain. BUT if it is cold and raining I will do a short run on the treadmill. Anything over 6 miles I will probably head out in the rain.

You’ve seen my puppy :) Sawyer is a golden doodle and he is totally awesome. I do enjoy running in the rain as long as it’s hot like you said. Cold rain running is just torture. It poured and was freezing for a while 10k and it was terrible. I love Jillian workout DVD’s!! She is a beast. I just finished her ripped in 30, and am now doing No More Trouble Zones, and some Burn Fat Boost Metabolism! They are great workouts!!

No dog for us, but when my husband and I got together he had a beagle named Eddie Vedder. Eddie was a jerk to me, but I think it’s just because he was old.

I am disappointed to say that my MIL has been cut off from my husband. I always imagined having a cool MIL to do stuff with my mom and me, but I was not so lucky! Glad you appreciate a cool MIL.

I hate running in the rain unless it’s 80+ degrees out. Somehow during my marathon training I managed to avoid running in hard rain. It’s been really dry around here in the Philly area.

LOVE Jillian Michael’s whole approach to working out. I bought the 30-day shred but haven’t done it because that would involve setting up a DVD player and cleaning up the basement. One day I’ll do it–I tried in On Demand and loved it!

I have two border collies, and they love to run. Charlie reminds me of my youngest Dubhlainn and he will also lick you to death.

LOVE running in the rain! Definitely prefer that over the treadmill. Haven’t tried the 30 Day Shred but have heard awesome things about it!!

I have a french bulldog!! She is such a sweet little girl and loves all people and dogs. I have the funniest nicknames for her: chubby one, sweet potato, etc. She had to go to the vet today and is on some medicine so she is a little down in the dumps. But I’m gonna take her to the dog park later so she’ll be her happy smiling self again soon!

we have three dogs. our newest is a full lab and so far so good. looking forward to the new teeth though, he loves to chew.

in-laws walk around a lake by their home. sweet.

it seems to have been raining more than usual here. last year we didn’t see any rain so it’s welcomed. if it’s drizzling, don’t mind running it but since i have a treadmill at home, i prefer it.

infact have the 30 day shred by jillian michaels. i do like it too!

That’s so neat that you guys went running together! My mother-in-law does work out but really moderately.. We’ve gone on walks together with the baby, etc :) Exercising does bring people closer, I am not able to talk towards the end of a run though.. I hope that’s a good sign of me pushing myself :)

My dating in laws always laugh at us when we tell them the distances of our long runs, but they usually get into friendly fights about which one of them could run farther/do more pushups/do a pullup etc. It’s always a good conversation.

i love short runs in the rain, but I have this long standing cure that if im running a race it WILL rain. I ran my first marathon in december and it poured the whole time, it has rained on my past 6 half marathons and Sunday Im running my second marathon and guess whats on the forecast….rain!! you would think id perfected the art of racing in the rain, but no such luck yet.

thats so awesome that you MIL runs!! enjoy your cali weekend!

Your dog is so cute! I want one so badly, but I want to wait until I have more time to train it well. Ideally I want a medium-sized dog that would be okay in an apartment. That’s important for the little guy!

We got a toy poodle in January and his name is Charlie and he is my absolute favorite :D There’s nothing like getting 100000 kisses and playing fetch for hours haha!

Isn’t it amazing how dogs remember people so well? We have two min-pins and a chocolate lab.

I really really wish my in-laws worked out, but they don’t. My sister-in-law is a runner, but she’s injured too. :( That is great that you are able to run with your MIL!! That would be a really great bonding experience.

Have a good trip.

P.S. I hate olives too.

My dog isno official breed, but he is very cute and great runner, so we are perfect match! He runs 99% of my mileage with me. Check him out here: http://ontherun.barborkas.cz/2012/02/best-running-buddy.html

I also run like 99.5 % of my mileage outside, so even when it rains, snows, is freezing cold etc. it’s sometimes tough, but I think it makes you stronger for the “easy” conditions…

Have fun with your in laws!!!

I have two lovable dogs: Vekku the border collie and Fido the shetland sheepdog. I love running with Vekku! Fido is too old for running but we used to have nice runs with him (like five years ago…).

My in-laws are not exercising type which I found very sad. Luckily they have a dog so we have at least one common interest!

I live in Northern Finland and today it is actually snowing… It rains quite often here and even if it comes as water it is COLD! Well, at summer we have nice warm rains :)

I’ve been reading your amazing blog about a year now but I don’t know why I haven’t left a comment before. Anyway, you are my idol :)

My dog … my Dante is a beautiful, lovable, naughty, labrador … he is NOT a runner or maybe I am just not a trainer … I love him and proudly describe myself as a crazy dog lady … he is a frequent visitor in my blog.

I just adopted a two year old labrador retriever from a shelter on Friday! I cannot wait to go running with him!

I ran my first 10k race yesterday in a full on rainstorm…it was a blast!

I think there’s a BJ’s near me, haven’t been yet though.
Molly is a greyhound, she’s almost 10 years old! We adopted her 6 yrs ago. She is easily excitable and you wouldn’t at all guess she’s 10 except for her black face that is turning grey/white.
My in-laws had been walking for a while but started jogging a few years ago after they moved to FL.
