Some Pregnancy Details

by Janae on March 5, 2012

Sorry for all of you that are having ussues with the blog. We weren’t prepared for the traffic we’re getting. Billy is going to fix the problem tonight (so you may see the blog offline for a little while) and we should be back to normal by tomorrow morning!

You guys are the absolute best.  I seriously have been so ridiculously excited to tell you our news because hello…we are all bf’s.

First things first, I am 15.43 weeks along (you better believe I add on the .xx, every day is one day closer:)  I am due on August 24th.

Photo 5

(Ultrasound at 10 weeks along to determine how far I was.  Hearing the heart beat is the coolest sound in the world and I become dehydrated from my tear ducts exploding whenever I get to hear it)

Here’s the story about the last few months.  (I probably won’t go into too much detail because my brothers read the blog religiously:)

After the 1/2 marathon in Vegas back in December I was really nauseated (talked about it HERE).  I thought I felt so sick because of the whole bad water at the race ordeal and just dealt with it.  Then there were the daily migraines and the fact that over Christmas break I couldn’t get out of bed before 11 a.m. or stop crying over the silliest things.  I didn’t think I pregnant for a while and this was a HUGE surprise for both of us. The nausea didn’t leave and certain areas of my body hurt more than I ever thought possible ha:)  After a while I had a good idea that something was going on and I stopped at Shopko on my way to the gym.  I took the test (S) at the bathroom there (classy, I know) and started crying instantly, I had never been so happy.  I rushed home and woke Billy up by jumping on the bed and talking 90 miles an hour, that feeling beat all of my runners highs that I have ever had combined.

I pretty much cry every time I see Billy playing with my nieces and nephews now, I know he will be the best dad ever.

Photo 6

Curly is extremely excited for the baby and they all sneak me their candy because they know I am now eating for two, some may say that is a myth but I am taking it to heart.

One of the first things I thought about when I found out I was pregnant was the running shoe picture.   (From my MIL’s Instagram)

Photo

I knew it was time to say something on the blog when a friend at the gym came up to me on Saturday and asked if I was pregnant (I should have said no and seen her reaction).  The sis and I spent Saturday looking for the perfect pair of shoes that didn’t have pink or blue on them because we won’t know the sex of the baby until April.  I secretly think it is a girl though.

How has being pregnant affected my running?

-The biggest thing is that I have slowed my pace per mile down a lot….anyone notice that I stopped posting my pace on the blog or daily mile?

I think I will stick to the 1/2 marathon distance as far as running races is concerned and keep running as long as I can throughout my pregnancy.  During the first trimester when I was nauseated all day/every day (don’t worry I will not complain to you about it because Billy heard enough of it for a lifetime), running (sleeping and eating) were the only things that made me feel better.  I thought it was in my head but my doctor said that exercise really does help with the nausea.  I grew to love running even more!

I now mainly run on the treadmill unless I have someone to go with (Billy, BIL and Sissy).   The treadmill allows me to stop and walk if I need and use the bathroom 28 times each run.   I also now have to wear 8 sports bras at a time which makes for extra chafing.

Remember the 1/2 marathon we did last weekend?  My sister could have easily ran a 1:37 (she has been training hard core) but stayed with me to make sure I could talk with her the whole time and that I didn’t push myself.  My doctors only requirement for me is that I am able to talk while I workout and to stop if I start cramping or feeling weird, he says my mileage is great and that spin is good for me but to focus on maintaining fitness right now, NOT building it.

Whenever I go running with Billy he puts his hand on my back at least every .25 miles and asks how I am feeling.  He is taking good care of me and goes to Costco 2 times a week to restock my cottage cheese, string cheese, potato and orange juice obsession.  He is also really great about dealing with the fact that I don’t like being hot and that I make us use the AC as it is snowing outside and going to bed with me at 8:15.

Running is actually feeling even better in the second trimester just because I am not nearly as tired as I used to be!

What are we going to name the baby?

-Janilly if it is a girl and Bilnae if it is a boy;)

We will be adding a new tab on the blog where I will talk about all things pregnancy…ESPECIALLY exercising and nutrition while pregnant because I have been reading some incredible books about these subjects. Of course I will talk about it a little bit on the main page but it will pretty much stay the same…. running/food/tangents/weirdness/pictures of myself taken in my classroom. Thanks again everyone for your sweet words, you mean the world to me!

———————————————-

Any other questions that you have that I didn’t talk about? All you moms out there…..start dishing out the ADVICE!!!  Did you experience ‘morning’ sickness?  What other symptoms did you experience in that first trimester? How was your workout today?

so i’ve been following your blog for a few months and although we’re not legitimately best friends {although i secretly hope every day to run into you at BYU}, i had a hunch something was up. it’s like a gift in my family. weird, i know. but ahhh congratulations!!
love love LOVED the picture y’all posted. i’m glad that morning sickness has slowed down and you better obey the doctors orders!! don’t push yourself… you’ll push yourself more than you ever though possible in 5 short months.

my mom never had morning sickness with all 5 us {lucky woman, i’m told} and i pray i don’t…

my workout today was MARVELOUS. for the first time i wanted to KEEP running but i couldn’t because of time {dang college schedule}.

I am so totally excited for you. Get some running shorts with really good support in the belly to hold it still. Also running isn’t the only thing that gets better the 2nd trimester :) . Third, I knew something was looking much bigger in the blog pictures and it wasn’t your hips!! Love you. E

I was wondering why you had said you wanted to run the 2012 Chicago Marathon… but then you didn’t appear to sign up for it or mention anything much about it. This explains a lot. ;)

CONGRATULATIONS AGAIN!!!! So excited for you!!!!! Are you going to continue teaching spin throughout the duration of the pregnancy, too?

Unbelievably exciting!!! Almost makes me want another….but then I realize I have 3 little crazies I’m in love with and that’s perfect for me! I had pretty bad morning sickness and food aversions with all 3- no chocolate of all things, made me so sick- it was horrible!!! So glad that went away!
Just keep up what you are doing, your body will give you clues, like it is, to slow down and take it easy when you need to. I was very active through all of mine, and labor and delivery were pretty quick and smooth, probably because I was in great shape. Fun fun fun!! Looking forward to watching you “grow”;-)

I felt great my whole pregnancy but I did have sciatica during month 6 and couldn’t run :( I used the stationary bike instead. but then I was right back at it running 5.5 miles the day I went into labor.

OKAY FIRST – pleaaaase request that this little lady (I have a really strong girl feeling too!) stay put until August 26, so we can be birthday buddies :) :)

SECOND – If you ever need any pregnancy workout advice, my lovely boyfriend is a personal trainer (like… an off-the-charts, really well-respected one.. if i do say so myself :p) and he’s trained quite a few pregnant ladies and is the bomb.com when it comes to that sorta thing. SUPER knowledgeable.

THIRD…. you are gonna be the world’s coolest parents EVER. Can I come be your foreign nanny?!?

From the second that you posted about this I wanted to share some info with you because you are such a great person and answer any newbie runner questions I have.

Nicole DeBloom (professional triathlete–you have most likely heard of her) and her hubby Tim recently had their first baby. She chronicled all her fitness/exercise during her pregnancy on her blog: http://www.skirtsports.com/blog/
So I would say you might get some helpful tips and info from her past posts! She talked about running and biking and swimming and all things preggo related for the past 9 months and it was great reading through all her experiences.

CONGRATS again!!

Awww. Congratulations! You are going to be the cutest pregnant woman ever! Now you have an extra excuse to eat those desserts. I have 2 kids and had really bad morning sickness with both of them (up until 18 weeks or so). Other than that though, I had really easy pregnancies and worked right up until I gave birth. I didn’t run while pregnant, but wish that I had. It would have made it way easier to get back into shape after they were born.

Oh Janae a million congratulations to you both. You are going to be amazing parents:).Best news of my day:)
I have two kids and both pregnancies were really different, but I was pretty active through both.I work on my feet(some heavy lifting),and that went fine(I swear the guys I work with were way more worried about it than I)-with my second I ran up until the day I delivered, although I scaled it way back.It felt great,I slowed down, kept hydrated and just listened to my body.
Oh,and I was super nauseated and tired for the first,oh,16 weeks(and I work in a kitchen,oh the smells)-for me-lemonade made me feel 1000x better, and lots of snacks-saltines,chips,etc.But then it’s like you turn this corner and feel awesome!!!

anyway-huge hugs.Amazing!!!!xxoo

As far as pregnancy, I couldn’t get off the couch for almost the entire 9 months so you’re already doing better than me! And I was running about 10 miles a day before that! Honestly, I think my body knew it’s limits and I listened. The day my babies turned 6 weeks old, though, I strapped them in the jogging stroller and off we went. I was able to almost instantly pick back up where I left off 9 months before. The body is an amazing thing!
You are an inspiration and I can’t wait experience a little bit of your journey (through the blog) with you!! This is so exciting!

Shoulda put it together. NO one in my world runs or reads blogs so I’m all alone here. Congratulations. :)

And good for Billy for taking such good care. My adorable husband, upon hearing we were expecting, asked me to help him move the stereo ;) (he got better after that…)

My workout this morning was training my client (we did a bodyrock type workout with some quick intense intervals, and then some yoga), I taught cardio dance and abs, and now I’m heading to teach BLACKLIGHT zumba (my favorite!).

I worked full time and didn’t work out at all with my first and even though I had my 3 rd 5 years later, I recovered faster after her birth & I really think it was because I exercised during that pregnancy.

Congrats again and hey, with #3, my period was MIA so I actually took a pregnancy test in Wal-mart out of desperation for answers!! The urge to pee on a stick is STRONG. ROFL!

Congrats again! Sounds like you are doing great. I felt like crap until around 13 weeks with my first and 15-17 weeks with my second and third. I also had a HUGE aversion to smells and poultry (?) with #1 (Bath and Body Works Warm Vanilla Sugar lotion made me GAG) and wanted to eat nothing but steak and bean burritos in my first trimester. Yay! Yay! Yay!!! I’m so happy for you!!! I am pregnant with my first (Due May 25th :) It’s a girl ). I defintely had all day nausea and vominting from 6 weeks til 15 weeks. Zofran REALLY helped so I could keep some food down. I’m not sure if you are vomiting or not… Now that my belly is getting bigger i’ve found I need a belly support band when I excerise so I don’t get sore afterwards so look into getting one of those for later. When you have your glucose test at 28 weeks bring a snack for afterwards (cashews were perfect for me). I started getting heartburn at night in the second trimester and zantac has really helped with that :) I would get super anxious sometimes thinking about labor and having a baby but one thing that has helped is going to classes and talking to other soon to be mom’s about it :) So happy for you!

How exciting! I worked out until I was 30 weeks pregnant, but then I had to stop because I started dilating early. I never got morning sick, I think it’s because I ran and did weight training all throughout the pregnancy. I had such a great experience and my husband and I both say it’s because I was healthy and did everything normal (continued working out, eating regularly and healthily? haha) Congrats, can’t wait to hear more details!

Ok, I seriously was lost this afternoon! I checked your page after about a day of not reading it- sorry- full time job calling- and wondered why and what you were talking about! As soon as I realized it was YOU who is preggers, OMG! I cannot believe how happy I am for you and Billy! That is so wonderful, and I can nly wish you the best in health and happiness as you two begin this amazing adventure together! Nothing compares to being a Mom and parent- I can never imagine my life before it. Now, I truly know what my own parents went through- oohhh boy- I hope you were good to yours:-) my only advice… Do what is right for YOU, janae. Everyone in the world will tell you more bad things than good, but listen to your own heart- as well as Billy’s. You two are great people with big hearts and lots of love, and that will get you through many a sleepless night with a little one! Thanks for sharing this with all of us:-) congrats!!!!!

Been reading your blog for a while, but never really ever comment. Congrats! I’m a Mom of one boy(two years old ) and have a girl on the way (19wks along). I was really sick with both until about week 13, so it’s totally normal and I’d say a majority of women at least feel some sort of nausea and have food aversions like crazy! And, being tired? Ugh, all the time that first while but now it’s much better. I’m a mt. biker and skier and I didn’t really workout with my son, but I’ve been working out (spin, walking, lifting light weights) the entire time thus far with this one and I feel so good! Much more energy and just all around feel better. It’s hard to feel that way once you get bigger and more uncomfortable, but keep at it as long as you can…walking is THE best thing you can do besides yoga and some spinning in my book.
Congrats and best of luck!

Awesome! I have two littlies (ages 5 & 18 months old) when I was age 21 and 25. I had four weeks worth of morning sickness with my eldest (boy) and 10 weeks worth with my second (girl). I stopped running after my first trimesters and replaced it with a lot of fast walking, only because my belly felt so sore running. Trust your body it’ll indicate what it needs and when it’s had enough of something. Enjoy.

Working out through a pregnancy is THE BEST! I was horribly sick when I was pregnant with Aidan for about the first 22 weeks. I slept and slept and puked and puked. I went on Zofran around week 8 to curb the nausea which helped a bit, but I still puked at least once most days. It was a pain in the butt to get to the gym, but I always felt a ton better once I did.
Another tip, make sure you have plans to continue working out after the baby comes (e.g. membership at a gym with daycare, husband agree to watch baby while you run, good jogging stroller)
Keep up the running and working out! You’ll be such a great Mama!

Congratulations!!!! So beyond excited for you and Billy! (Even though we don’t know each other in real life, and I typically don’t have time to comment, I feel like I know you since I blog stalk you).

I felt nauseated with both of my pregnancies. It was so hard to teach everyday! I never actually got sick, but felt awful and could only eat salty foods like salt bagels, chips, pretzels …oh and those darn Five Guys fries! I couldn’t stand the sight/smell of a lot of my “go to foods” like veggies and chicken.

I ran through most of my 2nd pregnancy and here and there with my first (had a few things that stopped me with my first). I loved running or at least walking = it made me feel great.
Can’t wait to hear more!!!!

Congrats! I just wanted to let you know that running a marathon is possible if you want to. I ran the chicago marathon last year at 18 weeks pregnant and ran until 26 weeks. Of course my pace was WAY slower than typical, i drank a ton of water, and peed A LOT. My doctors encouraged me to keep running if I wanted to. I stopped running because it was becoming too hard to breathe. I am due this friday and can’t wait to start running again. Congrats again, and good luck!

I am pregnant too and due Sept. 9th, just a couple weeks after you! I haven’t been able to run at all though. I ran the Marine Corps Marathon in October when I was 6 weeks pregnant and then ended up having a miscarriage the next day. The doctors said the two weren’t related, but it made my husband and me nervous enough to halt the running this time. So, now I mainly just walk. I get sad when I see people running and I always thought I’d be a running preggo momma, but I’ll survive.

I have had horrible nausea and still do, even though I’m 13 weeks. I’m also EXHAUSTED ALL THE TIME. I can’t wait for this to pass! I cannot get anything done. Plus, I am huge already. I started wearing maternity pants in my second month. It’s crazy. Partly I blame it on my mom because she manages a maternity store and sent me all this maternity stuff – the minute I tried it on I felt so much more comfortable. However, I look 5 months pregnant already, so can’t wait to see what I’ll look like in another few months!

Good luck with everything. I can’t wait to hear about your journey. It’s fun reading about other people’s pregnancies while going through my own. You guys are gonna be the best parents ever!!

I know I’m a little late to the party, but congrats again!
No personal pregnancy advice to share here, but I do have an MPH in nutrition so here are a couple of things I filed away for future use when I was in school:
1. It’s SO good for you and your baby to exercise while pregnant but very important not to get overheated. Your baby can’t cool itself and is very sensitive to higher than normal temperatures. So, no running outside once it starts getting hot!
2. Labor is much shorter and easier for women who exercise throughout pregnancy. My exercise physiology professor was in labor for only 2 hours with her first!
3. Your baby can actually taste what you’re eating through the amniotic fluid- crazy right? This is especially important with breastfeeding, but you can actually start developing healthy eating habits in your baby right now. I know this happened with me because beef and pork made my mom really sick when she was pregnant with me, and guess what types of meat I have NEVER liked? In contrast, I have always loved all fruits and veggies, even when I was a little kid.

ps- the running shoes photo is super cute!

My only advice is to enjoy this time as much as possible…it is SO exciting. I was able to run well into my 7th month & the only thing that really stopped me then was it was just such a pain to have to find a bathroom every mile. I ended up using the elliptical the last couple of months & even after my son was born, if I couldn’t get him to sleep, I’d strap him into the baby bjorn & jump on the elliptical – he fell asleep every time.

I agree with you and your doctor – the ONLY thing that stopped my ‘morning/all day sickness’ was when I would exercise — sounds like you’re being smart about slowing it down a bit – but as fit as you are, you should be able to keep it up the entire pregnancy.

Oh – and BTW – my son was born in August — on a day that reached 105 — summer birthdays rock for kids!

Congratulations – you and Billy are going to be wonderful parents.

I am so super duper excited for you!!! We have/had such similar experiences. I am 26+ weeks pregnant right now and still running. I didn’t find out I was pregnant until I was 8+ weeks, which was about 5 days after I ran a marathon! I also make sure to run with others when outside or I take it to the treadmill. So far every ultra sounds I’ve had and all blood work has come back normal.

Just make sure to listen to your body, if you are tired and do not feel like run. Don’t! Conversation pace is key to being able to run longer. and hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!!!!

I can’t wait to follow your pregnant running journey!

I am so happy for you and Billy. This is so incredibly exciting for you! I think it’s great that you’ve already talked to your doctor about your running and have a great plan. Oh and I love the names you picked. Classy. ;)

Ohhh I just knew it! I had a feeling when your posts changed a bit and I have been watching to see when you would tell us :) Oh momma how your life will change!! I ran all the way up to 35 weeks and even ran a half marathon race at 19 weeks and a 10K race at 30 weeks. No one could tell at 19 but I sure got some looks at 30 weeks let me tell you!!! Especially when I was passing people right and left :) Run until your body tells you no. Watch out on the treadmill because you will experience balance issues as your center of gravity changes and as your belly expands. I experienced some severe round ligament pains as my muscles and ligaments that inserted into the groin area stretched but this is not dangerous for you or the baby so you just have to decide when things get too uncomfortable. Keep on running momma because it really does make recovery happen quickly and you will not feel like such a blimp as your little peanut is growing :) CONGRATS!!!!

Congrats, Janae!! I tried to leave you a comment this weekend but all the traffic you were getting must have messed up something because I got an error :)

You are going to be a great mom! And I can’t believe last weekend you ran a 1:45 half, pregnant. Gives me some hope that when I take the plunge with the baby stuff I’ll be able to keep running (slower, obv), too.

Congratulations! How exciting.

I’m a mom but had no morning sickness. You should probably hate me. However, I will say that running and exercising made me feel normal in a time when everything seemed so out of control. It’s incredibly awesome that your doctor is so supportive.

166 Shauna@Balancing Bites March 6, 2012 at 10:56 am

Congratulations! I love being a mom. Cherish every minute from now until forever because it goes by so fast. I had one episode of morning sickness in the beginning, but my biggest complaint was being exhausted. In the middle and end of my pregnancy my ribs, lower back and pelvis hurt. I was carrying twins so that probably contributed to most of my pain. It’s great your doctor supports your running.

My husband is worried that I may now think it’s time for us since I will be reading about baby things. He just accepted the running biz. :) I’m still hoping that you visit KY sometime, we could celebrate with some froyo.

P.S. you already have that glow :)

Maybe everyone who complained about the RnR Vegas dirty water situation is actually pregnant?!? :-)

Seriously – congrats! I think the information you will share will be so valuable to moms-to-be everywhere. Before Kara Goucher and Paula Radcliffe took their pregnancies “public” there just wasn’t a lot of good information out there in the public realm about exercise (esp running) during pregnancy. I’m willing to bet your knowledge will help a lot of women out there.

congrats Janae! what an amazing time in your life.

I’m currently 37 weeks and am still jogging (although slow and not very far). I ran a half while I was 20 weeks and haven’t raced since then. I really think staying active will help in the long run so keep it up!

I made a pregnancy page on my blog as well to kind of recap all of the weekly updates I was writing.

good luck with everything!

Contrats!!! That is so awesome!.

I am 33 weeks now. My first trimester was rough and it wasn’t until I finally gave up trying everything else that I realized running made me feel better instead of worse. Everyone around me (outside of my husband and doctor) initially thought it insane that I’d choose to go run instead of curl up in a ball on the couch.

Overall, I was able to run easily (well sort of) until about two weeks ago. I ran a half at 24 weeks and 28 weeks, neither what I would consider racing or fast.

Every day that I can still do something, whether it be run, run-walk, swim, is just another day to be thankful.

Congratulations!! just headed over here from skinny runner….so happy for you and billy…it is an extraodinary feeling being pregnant and being a mom…someone said to me that when you have a baby its like having your heart walking outside of your body…boy is that true…being a mom to two healthy beautiful girls it is the most amazing and rewarding feeling! advice…hhmm….i say enjoy every single moment…the good, the bad…enjoy eating that extra piece of cake/ice cream….send billy on those late night snack runs! lol…drink lots of water…oh yeah most importantly and i don’t think you’ll have this problem….but just in case put lots of lotion on your tummy area it will help with your skin stretching and will help prevent getting stretch marks….if i can think of anything else I’ll be sure to pass them on to you…. :D and oh yeah…if your gut feeling is that you are having a girl…you are probably right! i was right on with my two girls even before i went in for a sonogram…congrats again! :) )

CONGRATULATIONS!!!! I cried reading about how you found out you were pregnant and how you peed on a stick at the bathroom in the store. LOL. I peed on the stick at work.

I’m not nearly as fast as you, but I did run till the day I gave birth and let me tell you, it was the best thing ever. I was in labor for 5hours and pushed for 10 minutes. And the entire time, my OB/GYN, who is also in my running group, talked about what marathon we were running next. HAHAHA.

In any event, I wish you a very healthy and uneventful pregnancy.

Congratulations again.

First of all congratulations! I am so excited for you! I actually just had my little man on Monday. You can read about his birth story on my blog if you want but don’t let it scare you. His birth story is not your typical delivery.

I wanted to let you know that you might experience what is call round ligament pain while you are running. I would describe this as pain or pressure in your groin/crotch area. Totally normal so don’t get worried.

Congratulations!! What an absolutely adorable picture!
As far as advice goes, I highly recommend this book: http://www.amazon.com/Exercising-Through-Pregnancy-James-Clapp/dp/1886039593
It was written a while ago but it kind of debunks all the old advice about keeping your heart rate below 140, etc. I did buy a heart monitor and definitely recommend one if you don’t already have it. It just kind of helped to keep me in check. I couldn’t run and did the elliptical instead b/c it was too uncomfortable. But I was ALL stomach – I literally looked like I had a basketball sitting on my belly! I also did Group Power (like Body Pump) all throughout. Ask the teacher for modifications and they will really work with you to make sure you are safely doing the work out – esp not laying flat on your back, etc. You may have some strange cravings and food aversions! I literally ate like 4-5 apples a day when I was pregnant with my son – I wanted them constantly!! Enjoy and feel good!

Waaaaahhhh! I had no idea you are preggers! It took me like ten minutes to scroll down and leave a congrats. You are going to be such a fun awesome mom. Make sure you get an amamamamazing jogger. I’m sure you’ll be getting all sorts of Advice and I always felt like people wanted to share wayyyy too many horror stories. After you have the little one though the ordeal sort of becomes a badge o honor weirdly enough. I was sick up to six months unless I exercised. It made the morning sickness night and day for me. Why don’t people tell you morning sickness is not just for mornings?! Crazy people. I dunno how my mo had four kids, when I asked her she said memory loss. Good luck and the best advice I could Eva share would be truly enjoy every minute even if your pregnancy or your labor or your delivery don’t go exactly as you plan. But you don’t seem to have any problems enjoying the ride!
