Marathon Giveaway and A Weird Workout

by Janae on March 1, 2012

You know you have reached ultimate laziness when you eat your after school snack of cereal out of a glass for only one reason. That reason is that I used that glass for water earlier that day so it was already dirty and I didn’t want to add an extra dish to my full sink by using a bowl.  Win-win.

Photo 2

A little while later I was ready for another snack…come on, laying on my couch after school revs up that metabolism.

My latest gourmet creation, I like to call it, “Pretzelina wrapped in freshly opened mozzarella cheese.”  Pretzels wrapped with string cheese.  Try it, it is delicious.

I told you about that turbo kick class last Wednesday night right? Well, I may have been looking forward to it all week long.  Mainly because the instructor is awesome and I had never had so much fun in an aerobics class until turbo kick.

I arrived early, ready to kick and punch and shake and jump, only to find these weird things laying all around the room…

Photo 2 copy 2

There was a sub and she said that we were going to do a Bosu workout instead of turbo kick.  My heart wept, I actually was pretty bummed (wow, what a hard life) but decided to stay and try it out.  I am glad I tried it and I did work up a little sweat and my core and hamstrings will be sore but I don’t know if it is my ‘thing.’   I can barely balance on level ground let alone an inflated thing of rubber.

Dinner was definitely my ‘thing’ and we had pizza.  Costco was having a sale on their take and bake pizzas a few weeks ago and so we froze one and we finally got around to making it.

IMG 9395

Because it is necessary for my happiness to have something sweet after dinner I had a big glass of orange juice WITH pulp.  Doesn’t that sound appetizing…pizza and orange juice.

Don’t worry mom, I ate a bunch of vegetables earlier in the day, I will not be getting any nutrient deficient illnesses due to the lack of vegetables in my diet.  Plus the orange juice will protect me from scurvy.

Billy and I registered for TWO half marathons last night….I think we are slightly addicted.

Salt Lake City Half Marathon (My first marathon and I absolutely loved it) on April 21st

American Fork Canyon 1/2 Marathon (100% of all participants race fees goes towards patients in our community who need cancer treatments but cannot afford them) on June 23rd!

——————————————————

Salt Lake City Marathon is giving away A FREE 1/2 marathon or marathon bib to one lucky reader! If you are interested in winning this awesome opportunity please leave a comment saying that you want to run the SALT LAKE CITY MARATHON OR HALF MARATHON!!!!

—————————————————–

What race do you have your eye on that you want to sign up for?  What was the last race you signed up for?

Have you ever used a bosu ball?  What did you think of it?  What workout class have you tried before that wasn’t really your ‘thing.’

Last cheese item that you ate?

Least favorite chore?

-Dishes.

I’m pretty sure I would fall off one of those balls and hurt myself.

I’ve never done the pretzels and cheese combo, but I do pretzels and mustard all the time.

Least favorite chore is definitely dusting. That’s why I make Mike do that one and I’ll do everything else.

I want to run the Chicago Marathon!!!

The last cheese I ate was swiss, I love Swiss!

I was thinking about the bosu ball yesterday! That’s so funny, I need to get one.

My least favorite chore is emptying the dishwasher and laundry. Luckily my husband does the laundry. I cannot fold!

The Disney Wine and Dine in Nov. But really, I just want to go to Disney.
My trainer uses Bosu balls. But not this week. Anything involving yoga is not my thing.
Pizza.
Emptying the dishwasher.

I have my eye on the Brooklyn 1/2 marathon, which is 2 weeks after my 1st half marathon! <- last one i signed up for

I have tried to get on a bosu ball, and fell off. i literally have no coordination. i can barely do lunges without falling over!

last night i had goat cheese on ahi tuna (so good) and parm cheese on my broccoli that was covered in ketchup.. i swear, its good.

least fav chore would be laundry! only because we dont have it in our building so we have to drag it a few blocks away.. so lazy.

I have two 1/2 marathons, a 10k, a 4 mile and a 10 miler on my calendar so far this year. I will probably only be able to run-walk one of the halves and I have to switch the 10 mile to the 5k (luckily they have both and allow this). That one’s a month away and I’m still not running. Pretty sure I could walk the 10 miles, but NOT in the time limit set. I know I can walk the 5k just fine, and by then maybe I can run a little bit of it, too.

Your races sound great! And the second one will be lucky for you: that’s on my birthday. :)

I am not much of a “class” person at all. I really hate yoga classes, although I don’t mind doing it on my own.

Last cheese item: I made chicken lasagna earlier in the week. It was pretty (VERY) good!

Reply

21 Cheryl March 1, 2012 at 6:51 am

I LOVE doing that with pretzels!!! People think I’m weird here at work but they clearly don’t know what’s up!

I really need to bite the bullet and sign up for NYCM….just do it, right! I just want to get through my April ones, and then I’ll be able to think clearly;-) I used to LOVE the bosu ball, and have gotten away from it in favor of other things that challenge balance, like doing weights standing on one leg, normal, fun stuff like that:) I made nachos last night as a late night snack for the hubs and I, yum! I added avocado to make it extra special. And it’s hard for me to pick one least favorite chore, I pretty much don’t like any of them, but dishes is right at the top, with laundry in a close second.
Have a great day!!!

I just signed up last night for the Kooma women’s 1/2 marathon in Annapolis, MD for June. I’m excited because it’s only women so I’ll have plenty to watch while I run. I love looking at other people’s running gear. Afterwards it’s a girl party with bubbly and massages. Girlfest! It will be nice to have a race in the warmer weather too.
I also just ate string cheese last night and have one for lunch today. Oh and we had cheese on our pasta last night and I mixed it into the panko bread crumbs for our chicken fingers. Have you ever tried dipping a pretzel in icing? That’s amazing and it was a staple in college for us.
We use the bosu ball A LOT in abs class. I really enjoy it.

This is so funny because I JUST googled the other day the best half marathons and the SLC one was on the list! Weird.

Races: I have my eye on the Sleepy Hollow Half Marathon next month–oh wait, it is March now…it is later this month. I most recently signed up for a 5K in my town. How can I NOT do a race where I can walk to the start line?

Bosu: Yes. I have even taught pilates classes using it.

Cheese: cheddar in my chicken tortilla soup yesterday. Oh, and I have done that cheese and pretzel combo. Awesome.

Least favorite chore: cleaning the tub.

Happy first day of March!

34 Kersten Herold March 1, 2012 at 7:26 am

BOSU is the BEST workout! Don’t give up on it. I do it once a week and it is awesome. Best leg & butt workout!!!! Our instructor ALWAYS does “taps” It is 4 minutes with one leg on ball and other leg tapping floor to ball in different ways until the support leg is ready to fall off. Then we do more legs – lunges, DEEP squats from top of ball touching floor, etc. I wish my gym had TURBO KICK! Sounds awesome!

Reply

35 Janae March 1, 2012 at 8:44 am

Your comment just made me sweat reading about the taps ha. THat is awesome…you are inspiring me to try it out again, thanks Kersten!

last race I had my eye on and signed up for was the CHICAGO MARATHON! :)
I need to find a half to sign up for soon in the meantime though, i’d like to race just for the fun of it.

I used to use the bosu ball alot but havent used it lately. i’m coordinately challenged, so i looked like a fool on it but you can get some good moves in on that thing.

i had parmesan cheese on my pasta last night and blue cheese crumbles on my dinner salad. love love love cheesy goodness.

least favorite chore is cleaning cat litter..lol

Salt Lake City Half was my first ever race! I loved it, so of course I did it again the following year and shaved plenty of time off. Then I blew my knee out later that year running my first marathon. So the next year I spent rehabing that knee and now I am all set to run Salt Lake Half, but have yet to register. I’m not sure why. I’ve committed on every other level. Anyways, I would love an entry! I too love the pretzels and cheese, but I love pretzels and M&M’s more! Have you tried it?

Reply

43 Megan D March 1, 2012 at 7:40 am

I have been eying the AF half marathon, but would love to run the SLC half too! The last race I signed up for was a 5k on the 4th of July last year. Last year I was plagued with injury after injury and that is all I got out of my racing season. Uber lame. But I am done with injuries (I better be!) and really want to do another half soon!

I think using a Bosu is good for strength/core training, but it is not really my thing either. Turbo kick is! I just got back from my turbo class this morning :) I ran before so I am DRIPPING!

I ate cottage cheese last night with chia seeds and pomegranates on top. Yum. A favorite bed time snack.

I hate dusting. I’ll come do your dishes if you dust for me ;)

I have an enormous race wish list which would require very heavy use of my passport… but currently the race I really want to run is the Disney Wine and Dine Half Marathon. Unfortunately I don’t think I’ll be running it this year, but definitely next year!

I have used a bosu ball in physical therapy. Had to stand on the flat side with the ball side on the floor and do squats while holding weights in my hands. It’s a good workout!

Last cheese item I ate was slices of provolone on top of Triscuits. SO ADDICTING!

Least favorite chore is doing dishes, too. I try to wear rubber gloves, which makes it a little easier, but it’s still always a relief when it’s out of the way!

I would love to do any Disney race or a Rock N Roll half marathon. My wish list of races keeps getting longer. There are so many great races that my husband and I would like to do. I just signed up for my 2nd half marathon- La Crosse Fitness Festival Half.
The bosu is great! I have really loved adding it to my workouts. It challenges me and makes the workout fun. My husband and I like to each use two, one foot on each, and throw a weighted medicine ball back and forth to each other. It makes it feel like you are back on the playground in school but you feel it later! I found out last summer that Zumba is NOT for me! That was the longest class of my life!
The last cheese that I had was a light string cheese. Living in Wisconsin, cheese is a regular snack for us. The best is “squeeky cheese” or fresh cheese curds. They don’t last long in our house.
My least favorite chore would have to be scrubbing floors- I no more than get it done and one of the dogs or one of the kids walks across it with dirty feet or spills something on it.

I want to run the Salt Lake City Half Marathon! I will actually be in SLC for work that week so it’d be perfect timing! The last race I signed up for is the Platte River 1/2 marathon here in Denver although I am eyeing more halfs! I am eyeing the Pikes Peak Ascent (half marathon 7,000 feet straight up mountains to the summit of Pikes Peak in Colorado but I don’t know if I have the desire or energy to spend this summer training for it, so I might wait until next year instead. There is a shorter version of the Pikes Peak Ascent called Barr Trail Mountain Race so I want to sign up for that instead but registration doesn’t open until May. I’ve never heard of a bosu ball let alone used one. A class I tried and wasn’t into is spinning, believe it or not. Last cheese item I ate was shredded cheddar cheese on top of scrambled eggs. Least favorite chores is dishes, thank goodness my husband is OCD and prefers to do the dishes himself because I break too many of them! Ha!

Reply

78 Janae March 1, 2012 at 8:47 am

Wow that is perfect timing. You should run it either way and we could totally hang out. WOW..Pikes Peak Ascent sounds hardcore!! I will forgive you about spinning ha:) I want Billy to be OCD about dishes ha!

Reply

79 Sarah March 1, 2012 at 10:01 am

That’s a great idea, I might consider running it anyway even if I don’t win the free entry! I’ll have to check out the race website. I am lucky, my husband has to have the dishes organized in the dishwasher a certain way and if I try to do dishes he ends up rearranging everything so I gave up and left the dishes to him! But I am the same way about laundry, he is not allowed to even look at the washer/dryer much less operate them!

I love my Bosu! I use it alllll the time. One of my favorite workout moves on it is pushups (one hand on Bosu, one hand on ground – alternate sides). Love it!

I had a wedge of light swiss Laughing Cow mixed in with my eggs this morning!

My least favorite chore is mopping (which my husband does) and putting away my clean clothes lol.

I would absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE to run the SLC 1/2 marathon! I have wanted to visit my aunt who lives there for a long time!!! My uncle, who went missing in the Swiss Alps as a #2 world cup paraglider, started Point of the Mountain paragliding school in SLC… I always wanted to see where he taught! We were very close!!!

So anyway, it’d be awesome to go run to maybe honor him !!!

Thanks Janae for being so much fun to read!!!!!

Gotta tackle the least favorite chore first because I have to do it today (wwahhh) – laundry. I don’t understand why I get so upset when I have to do it. It’s not like my lack of clean clothes for the past week didn’t clue me in that the inevitable was coming. Still hate it with a passion, though.

And I’m pretty sure me on a Bosu ball would result in an injury or lawsuit. Keeping my distance…lol

I just signed up for Two Oceans half marathon in South Africa in April and I am toying with the idea of the Maine Marathon in October. It’s just an idea, but I would love to do a full marathon in 2012.

I just had a bagel with cream cheese and it was amazing. I also had a cheese plate at dinner last night that had the BEST pepper jelly on it. All local and delicious. I am hungry just thinking about it.

I have almost registered for the American Fork 1/2 twice. I am scared that I won’t really want to do it after the UV marathon, though.
The last cheese item I ate was regular grated medium cheddar in my taco soup last night.
Zumba is a class that just isn’t for me. I can see how it can be fun but I have no rhythm and I feel silly the whole time. Maybe if the room wasn’t completely lined with MIRRORS.
Least favorite chore- folding clothes!

Reply

120 Susan March 1, 2012 at 10:56 am

What race do you have your eye on that you want to sign up for? What was the last race you signed up for?

– I’m thinking local only this year for racing, with the exception of my first marathon in Richmond. Luckily staying local doesn’t provide much of a limit. The last race I signed up for is the B.A.A. distance medley ; run all three (5K, 10K, half) and get a fourth medal! The race I have my eye on is run to remember (http://www.bostonsruntoremember.com/boston/index.html). I want to do the 1/2 and I think that I can fit it in comfortably. That will give me 3 half marathons for this year, but given how comfortable I am with running now I think it’s all good.

Have you ever used a bosu ball? What did you think of it? What workout class have you tried before that wasn’t really your ‘thing.’

– I love the bosu. I used to go to a class where they turned it upside down so you were working with the blue side down; doing arm curls standing on top of that was really tough! I took a class a few times that was based around the games that we played when we were kids – jump roping, short races. Just wasn’t my thing.

Last cheese item that you ate?

– Nachos yesterday!

Least favorite chore?

– Too many to list. Changing the cats’ litter is no fun, I suck at mopping the floor, hate unloading the dishwasher…But my favorite is doing laundry. No idea why, I just like it. I feel accomplished when the loads are done, even though I didn’t do anything!

Toughest BOSU exercise ever is burpees using the the flat side for your pushups and then lifting it up overhead. So brutal. What race do you have your eye on that you want to sign up for? What was the last race you signed up for? I’d love to sign up for the Disney World Wine and Dine half, but I will probably just be doing the Rock N Roll Seattle Half Marathon since I have a Virgin America credit I need to use and a flight from SFO to SEA falls in my price range.

Last cheese item that you ate? I just had Fat Free Cream Cheese in my Egg White and Pico De Gallo Scramble. Last night I had Gorgonzola Crumbles in my Salad.

Least favorite chore? Washing the Dog

In my quest to run 50 half-marathons in 50 states, winning a freebie would be awesome! I also have a goal of 12 half mary’s this year (12 in 2012, not in different states though, too expensive) I just found your blog last week via Skinny Runner…you’re adorable!

I love Bosu balls! I don’t do that much on them, but when I do I feel like I get a good workout!

Love your blog!
