Too busy to go for a run……

January 5, 2012

Guess who I convinced to go get froyo with me yesterday?

Photo 7 copy

Yep, the madre met me after school and my froyo has never tasted so good.  Are kiwis in season right now?  Those kiwis in the picture were the best ones I have ever had (yes, I overuse that phrase).  Whipped cream is a great idea to load up on at a froyo place because it doesn’t weigh very much yet it is so tasty.

The boys went on a late(ish) night tempo run and did 5.25 miles in 38 minutes, don’t you hate how ridiculously fast boys are?  Oh yeah, I guess the fact that they work hard for it pays off too.

Photo 9 copy

I didn’t go because I had much more important things to do with my life:

Photo 9

A nap may have also gone down sometime yesterday but I don’t really remember.

After they got home from their run my BIL treated us for dinner and it was delicious.  Yep, that would be more TV in the form of The Office.  Teaching high school kids all day makes my brain jello by 5 pm.

Photo 9 copy 2

Don’t you just love the lighting in our house?  It is the best for pictures;)

Saltines make a great appetizer; Billy can eat a sleeve of those babies in one sitting.

Are you watching The Bachelor this season or do you look down on me for watching such a ridiculous show?

What fruit are you loving right now?

-Any citrus and kiwis.

Tell me about your last speed work session/tempo run.  What is your favorite way to fit in speed work?  Do you go to a track, use the treadmill or run around town during speed workouts?

-Hmmmmmm I am going to have to go with the Vegas 1/2 as being my latest speed work.  I need to change that….it has been more than a month.

Katie www.msfitrunner.wordpress.com January 5, 2012 at 6:34 am

Is this the first post???:) I usually don’t watch the bachelor/ette until the finale airs, and I get sucked into the 8 hour long recap! so juicy:) I’m into apples right now – so boring, but so good and my kids eat them like they are going out of style. Gala apples are my fave. Probably the last tempo run I did was this morning – 5 miles 33:50. I REALLY shouldn’t admit this, but I guess I still don’t totally understand the “tempo” run – I’m gonna go google it again now. Pretty sure it’s a fast-er run. Lately I like to get the speedwork in on the treadmill. Once the cold hits, it’s all indoors for me. But I’m just getting into doing speedwork, so we’ll see how long that lasts!!

Reply

Janae January 5, 2012 at 8:15 am

HEY KATIE!!! Girl, you are FAST!! Holy cow…I read the last 10 pages of your blog and you are my HERO! Basically a tempo run is nothing more than 20 minutes of steady running at threshold pace (they went for a little longer last night). Most people do it at about 30 seconds slower than their 5 k pace. Have a great day!

Katie www.msfitrunner.wordpress.com January 5, 2012 at 10:40 am

The Bachelor is definitely a reason to stay home!! I watched it the other night, and so many of the girls this season are CRAZY. Especially the blogger girl, what a shame lol!
Clementines are SO good right now! And apples always.
My last speed run was on a treadmill because it was too cold for me to run outside. Treadmills make it easier for me to do speed.

My roommate is always watching the Bachelor – I have too many other favorites to get into that one right now…

I’m currently obsessed with Strawberries and whipped cream! but I have to cut my strawberries so I get a better berry/cream ratio with each bite.

Treadmill last night.. first mile was slow to warm up, then I ran a tempo 2nd and then for the third mile I increased by .2-.3mph every quarter mile letting myself rest for < 1min in between ending at like 3.25 miles and I ran 3 of them. I don't know if that's really 'speedwork' I just get bored on the treadmill so I have to push myself at the end…

Reply

Janae January 5, 2012 at 8:03 am

That is definitely speed work and GREAT job!!! Okay, strawberries and whipped cream is AMAZING….I will be going to the store after work for some!

Last speed work I did came from runners world get speed in the off season.
10 minute jog
2 minute what you’d like your race pace to be.

Have you ever got the saltine mini’s? I don’t know why I like the small version better even if they taste the same.
2 minute jog
repeat 4-6 times
10 minute jog.
I enjoyed it and the time went really fast!

The Bachelor is the best reality show ever and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise…of course Biggest Loser ranks high up in there too! Is anyone else already annoyed that the “blogger” chic is going to give all bloggers a bad name with her emotional outbursts?

I’m trying really hard to incorporate speed work in my plan for my next half marathon following a Hal Higdon plan that has me doing 400 meter repeats!

Reply

Meghan January 5, 2012 at 9:20 am

Last ‘tempo-ish’ run I did was on Tuesday and it was 10 miles with 4×1200 repeats at sub 7 min/mile pace. I considered going to the track (would have been a better idea) but then hit the trail near my house – an out and back uphill/downhill run. It was windy and wet and miserable! Not to self (and in case you ever think to do it) don’t run on trails for speed work – it’s so much harder. Don’t run uphill unless you’re doing hill repeats – it’s so much harder. Don’t run in the wind/rain if you can skip it – it’s so much harder. Needless to say I was spent afterward.

i definitely prefer to do speed and tempo on the treadmill. it allows me to just set it and go and then i can put my entire focus on form. it’s easier to get in the zone if i dont have to check my watch either. the treadmill keeps you in line. there is no slowing down when you have it set to a certain speed. it’s just all around perfect.

On Monday I did 400 meter repeats at a sub 6 minute pace. It was weird. I’ve never done such short intervals before. I only did 5 sets to try them out and then I ran a few slower 800′s with my friend. I’ve been SO SORE since. Not going to lie, watching The Bachelor is a guilty pleasure! I watch the first episode and make a guess at who I think he picks and then I go check this website that has the full rundown of spoilers to see if I was right (and I was)!! It’s so much more entertaining listening to all the girls/him when you know who he picks :) Do you want to know who wins?!

Totally tuned in to watch the Bach! I really liked both of the nurses and bummed one of them went home… I thought the girl riding in on the horse was gonna be a little snooty [very judgmental, I know, sorry] but was pleasantly surprised she seems like one of the tamest of the bunch!

I am a bachelor lover. I have been sticking to pears and purple grapes..since they are the most consistent. Afraid of the cantaloupe plague from a few months ago…

Run outside alll the time..rain, snow, sleet, hail…nothing like up and down sprinting on the hills.
