My Treadmill Tried to Kill Me.

Technically it wasn’t my treadmill’s fault that I almost died but actually the fact that the room in which my treadmill lives is a complete disaster.

As I was happily running along this morning all of the sudden something came crashing into my legs. Luckily I grabbed onto the side rails in enough time to catch me from falling but it scared me half to death.

Photo

The suitcase bounced off my legs and fell to the side and I am pretty sure my yelling woke up the downstairs neighbors.  Yes, that is a sock on the floor, I want to blame Billy but I cannot.

I thought it would be fun to post some pictures from Cali that I didn’t post yet.  Prepare for randomness:

Remember my CELEBRITY SIGHTING at the gym during the summer, well I saw Billy Blanks (the inventor of Tae Bo exercise program) again!  I really wanted to take his class until I remembered I have zero coordination.

Photo 2

I was acting like I was just sending a text message but I think he knew that I was taking a stalker picture of him with my phone.

We were walking around a toy store on Saturday and Billy said that this is the only dog that I can get for Christmas.

Photo copy

It is just a toy but at least it is breathing…..one step closer to dog ownership.

Remember on Friday night how I said we are going to dinner at 11 pm?

Photo 1

This has become a new Jacobs family tradition.  Late night greasy tacos and fries at its finest.

Have you ever had any treadmill accidents?  Ever seen anyone fall on a treadmill?

Curly fries, onion rings, waffle fries, regular fries or no fries?

-Onion rings are my favorite followed closely with waffle fries.

What is the messiest room in your house/apartment?

-Definitely our back ‘storage’ room.  Also my closet needs some help.

Glad you are okay!! Whew! Can’t be hurting yourself b4 Vegas!

I fear my ponytail will someday get caught in a treadmill…but this would mean falling first, I guess?

Law School = dog for Janae, right Billy? Charlie needs a pal when you visit!

My sister had (has?) all the Billy Blanks tae-bo videos (on VHS – oh yeah) when we were growing up, and I did them so much. I actually love it and saw them at DI once, but Steve wouldn’t let me spend money on VHS tapes. :) My other sister gave me turbo-jam on DVD which is fun. Steve had a punching bag but sold it when we first got married because there wasn’t room in our apartment. Now I sort of want to get into kick-boxing including a punching bag (it may all be an excuse to buy the pink boxing equipment I saw, haha).

I’m not sure what the point of telling you all that was…I totally would’ve creeped a photo of Billy Blanks. I love french fries way to much for my own good – mostly only the big steak fries. Glad you didn’t die on your treadmill!

Reply

I’ve tripped on the treadmill before but never fallen thank goodness! Glad you were ok too. Hope you showed that suitcase who’s boss!
Curly fries and regular fries are a close call! I love Jack in the Box curly fries and all their greasiness! :)
The messiest room is our bedroom. I sort of throw my clothes on the floor a lot. Whoops. :D

Cool celebrity sighting!!

I’ve never fallen on a treadmill, but I saw a lady eat it once at the gym. Kinda sad and funny at the same time. Haha.

Messiest room would be my side of the closet. It needs major help!

Reply

Falling on the treadmill is like my biggest fear ever!! Seriously, the idea of it freaks me out!! I’m glad the suitcase missed you though!

Curly fries are the best, although I’ve never heard of waffle fries! Do they taste like waffles? If so, then they HAVE to be the best! :P

And what running shoes are you wearing? They are so cute!

Reply

I’m glad you didn’t die!!! That would have scared the soup out of me. Your poor downstairs neighbors… I used to live below someone that ran on a treadmill early in the morning. Let’s just say I didn’t love running at all during that time in my life.

I thought that dog was real when I first saw the picture! So funny. Don’t get a dog. Just have a kid.

Reply

Usually no fries, but waffle fries are my favorite, I love the texture. Also, I did see a girl (who I didn’t like and thus was not super upset), fall on the treadmill at my club’s gym a couple years ago. She hopped right back up though!

Um I have totally fallen off of a treadmill! In high school I was completely in the zone, listening to my CD player (because iPods didn’t exist then and I am old) when it came unplugged from my headphones and I forgot I was running and reached down to catch it. I flew off the back and hit the wall. So graceful I am.

Reply

EXACT same thing happened to me. I had a “walkman” – even older than your CD player – it had a cassette (there, that makes you feel younger, doesn’t it). I started to drop it, tried to catch it and boom – down and shot off the end of the treadmill. The thing I thought was weird was that there was only one other lady in the treadmill area and she didn’t even ask if I was okay – just completely ignored me like people shoot off the back of the treadmill every day. Graceful we are.

Reply

Just out of curiosity, it seems like you are bumping up the number of running days in a week. Did you get cleared to run more than once every 3 days? If so, that is good news!

Reply

HEY ASHLEY!! You are good at noticing things! I did get the okay from the doc. I am doing every other day now and LOVING IT! Hope you are having an amazing night!

Reply

yayyy congrats! bet you are EXCITED! :) I have been trying to stick to once every 3 days as well (trying to get over tendonitis) and it seems to be working well. I will be glad when I can bump it up though and not have to worry about spacing out my work outs.

When I was 8, I was playing on my parents treadmill and decided I wanted to run as FAST as it would go. Of course my little legs couldn’t go that fast, so the treadmill slammed me back against the wall and pulled me under it! I was under there for about 30 seconds (really just my legs and stomach-and keep in mind the belt was still moving FULL speed) before my mom came and pulled me out. It’s amazing I am not traumatized! Love your blog!

Reply

Yeah, I’m sure he knew you were taking his picture. I would have done it too though, that guys a stud and he’s like 65 but looks 40 (that may not be accurate). :) My niece biffed it so hard at the gym on the treadmill in front of some hot guys…sad for her but oh so funny!

Come check out this weeks guest post {Motivate Me Monday}.

Sweet potato fries!!

I’ve fallen while running on the treadmill. I grabbed onto this bar in the front on my way down (which fortunately prevented me from smacking my face on it). As I held onto the bar my feet dragged on the belt behind me. Finally, I was able get up and stop the treadmill. Best part…my friend was on the treadmill beside me laughing her head off. She didn’t even hit the stop button!

Reply

i’ve definitely had one of those times where i am so in my own world that i run off the treadmill with one of my feet. i assure you i looked quite gracious while trying to catch myself!

Reply

I want a puppy, too, but Brandon just isn’t going for it. I mean, he has a valid point because I don’t really want to do all of the work that goes along with owning a dog. But I still want one!! ;)

My only treadmill accident was in college when I didn’t double-knot my shoelaces. Not good. Lesson learned.

Reply

Smiley fries are top of the line. They used to pair well with dino nuggets.

I’ve never seen someone fall but have seen people hold on to the sides the entire time for miles, which would make me fall.

Reply

1.) My room is a fire hazard/my desk is a black hole and, 2.) waffle fries followed closely by curly fries…sweet potatoes are gaining speed (who am I kidding, I like every kind of french fry!)

Reply

Glad you didn’t get hurt! Once my towel fell off the treadmill and it was almost a disaster but I was able to grab the rails and not fall off! Scary though!

Reply

AHAHAHAHH. First of all, I will totes magotes get you that dog, but only if you name it something funny like George. Second, hOLY SHIT!! How did a suitcase crash into your legs?!? Okay that is just scary. The Phantom Suitcase. DUN DUN DUNNN

Billy Blanks sighting cool! No treadmill accidents yet (knock on wood). Onion rings definitely. Office is the messiest for me. That’s where all our junk goes. The puppy is so cute. Looks real!

Yikes! I’m glad you were okay! I’m always afraid I’m going to fall off the back of my treadmill.

Oh man, I worked on reception at a gym for 3 years. i saw SO MANY treadmill accidents… which is probably why to this day i hate running on treadmills.. i’m a nervous wreck!

Two highlights:

1. Teenage boy has it cranked up way, waaaay too fast. flies off the back…. and straight into the trash can behind him, butt-first. He got stuck. It was amazing.

2. My fault…. late one night, about to finish my shift, bored out of my brain. One of the personal trainers had left a soccer ball at reception. I was kind of kicking it/nudging it around with my foot to keep myself entertained, when i got a bit too enthusiastic and lost control of it. The treadmills were located right near the reception desk. The ball hit a wall, bounced off, and GOT SUCKED UNDER a treadmill that a middle aged lady was jogging on. It was insane… it fully FLATTENED, with this crazy sucking noise. The whole treadmill shuddered, seized up, made this horrible grinding/screeching noise, and came to a halt. The woman grabbed onto the sides – thank god! – and was okay, but really shaken up. I ran over, made sure she was alright, and got down on my knees to get the ball out from under it… amazingly, it miraculously “popped” back out to its original shape. the woman was like “what happened?!! oh my god.. what happened?!??!” …….i was like “ermm.. well…. it seems that a ball got under the treadmill.”
HAHAHA oh man I’m so glad she didn’t die/none of my bosses were there :\

Ohhh man, I had a bad run in with a treadmill about 5 years ago. I was happily trotting along at the gym with my headphones plugged into the ‘mill, when my arm caught the wire and pulled them out of the jack. So I decided I would plug them right back in. But in doing so I kind of twisted my body and accidentally stepped off of the belt with my right foot while my left went flying back off the end. I was basically in the splits for a few seconds and the belt was chewing away at my shin. I got up as quickly as possible and continued my workout, but several people had asked if I was ok. It was horribly embarrassing and I had a big burn on my shin from it. But grace has never been my strong suit so I can’t say it was all that surprising!

loooove jack in the crack tacos. did you know the meat is made out of soy? i’m always afraid of eating it on a treadmill. have you seen that youtube video with the girl eating it on a treadmill over and over and over again? dont watch it if you want to be fearless on the treadmill. that’s why the elliptical and i are bffs.

i thought that puppy was real and i want one. christmas come early!

Reply

Love that you called them Jack in the Crack tacos…I had no idea they are made out of soy! Is there anything else in the ‘meat’ or is it all soy? I am on my way to watch the youtube video, I must see it!

Reply

I’ve (knock on wood) never fallen on the TM. I have my young patients on them everyday though, and I frequently have to catch them before the fly off the back because they just decide to sit down mid-run. It keeps things exciting!

And sweeter tater fries trump all others!

Reply

I’ve never had any accidents but I see them all the time!! It’s really funny to watch but it must be scary to actually be the person falling off. It’s probably even worse at the gym because everyone sees you!! I’m glad you’re okay and didn’t suffer any major injuries!

I love all fries but I would have to say curly are the best. They are always seasoned differently and so delicious!

Reply

When I was in college I ran track/XC and we always had to do speed workout on the treadmills during the winter. I fell off in the middle of the fitness center and I was so embarrassed…though it didn’t last long bc within the hour another teammate fell off too! We are runners for a reason….NO CONTACT SPORT!!! Not enough coordination to hop on and off a moving target!

Reply

Oh my goodness….I would have died! BAHAHA you are so right, we don’t expect to have to do anything coordinated, that is why we do it:)

Reply

I’ve tripped on the treadmill. at the gym. and ended up on the floor. That’s what you get for early morning workouts when you’re not all the way awake yet : ) I’m glad your story didn’t end like mine!

Reply

ON THE FLOOR….oh girl, that is awful. The things we do for exercise:)

Reply

Sweet Potato Fries!!!

Reply

I’ve seen a few treadmill spills at the gym and they are so scary! This is why I get scared to run much faster than 6.5mph pace on a treadmill (and because of my shrimp legs, thats pretty fast for me)!

Reply

Girl…that IS speedy, way to go!

Reply

Glad to know I am not the only person who pretends to send text messages!

I’ve never fallen on a treadmill but basically everytime I run on one I start running faster than the spead that I have it on and run into the front of the machine.

There are no messy rooms in my house because I am a neat freak. Maybe I should clean your treadmill room so that suitcases will no longer attack you.

Reply

That is hilarious, I always run into the front end of my treadmill too. Yes, please come clean for me..I NEED AN INTERVENTION from you:)

Reply

I always pretend like I’m texting when taking creepy stalker pictures hahah! Not like I do that all the time or anything……..
Omg I would have screamed like crazy. I’ve never fallen or seen someone fall!
Can I say sweet potato fries? If not, then waffle.
Besides storage, it is most definitely my closet. We use it as part storage too.

Reply

You’d better be careful on those dangerous treadmills, missy! The last time I saw a really, really messy room was when I went home this weekend and saw my sister’s. haha. She’s so pretty, though!

Reply

Curly fries! Or sweet potato…nom :D

Reply

No treadmill accidents for me. My HS best friend fell off while ogling a cute boy and got her hair tangled in the belt. I felt really bad for her. Definitely waffle fries because they have the best ketchup carrying capacity. That is the point of eating fries, right? To transport condiments? Not sure about the messiest room, probably depends on the day.

Reply

When we were in Costa Rica a couple years ago we saw some girl biff off the treadmill and hit the glass that was about 3 feet behind her. She had tried to jump off to the side and missed. We felt so bad since it was a tiny hotel gym and it was just us and her, we tried to ask if she was okay but she took off very quick!
Curly fries :)
Our storage room too! We try to clean it out once in the winter and once in the summer but it always ends up messy again.
PS Totally thought that dog was real!

I fell on my treadmill at my home THANKFULLY! I had just started running and my movie wasn’t working so I stepped off and fixed it. Then just stepped back on and stood there! I didn’t start running and was whipped back. As soon as I felt my feet moving I started to laugh knowing how hysterical I was going to look. I didn’t have the strap on (ALWAYS WEAR THE EMERGENCY STRAP) and we had a tub behind the treadmill (ALWAYS HAVE A CLEAR SPACE BEHIND YOUR TREADMILL) therefore I was stuck between the tub and treadmill. I ended up with deep burns from my knees to my ankles. I couldn’t wear pants for weeks. I would have been able to get up a lot sooner if I wasn’t laughing so hard at myself. It was and still is one of my many most embarrassing moments.

Reply

I have fallen off the treadmill a total of THREE times in my 26 years. One was on a ship that was rocking and rolling…the other two I have no excuse for other than my clumsiness and inability to watch tv and run on the treadmill simultaneously.

Waffle fries!!! Love Chik-fila the most!

Reply

My treadmill accidents have all involved my book falling off (it has to balance in a certain spot…book has to be a certain thickness…as more of book is read, another book is sometimes needed to keep it thick enough to stay in its spot). Anyway, book comes crashing down, I must figure out what has happened in that split second and leap over it. (This usually involves a library book – eek – so i don’t want to land on it!)Then i try to retrieve it quickly before the pages get all beat up. It’s no wonder i prefer to run outside in the cold, heat and rain to avoid that treadmill! ;-)

I have definitely fallen off the treadmill, luckily, most of the time it’s been on my treadmill at home, not in public at the gym. What can I say? i’m not very coordinated.

The messiest room of our house is probably the kitchen. It’s where mail and everything else just seems to pile up.

Reply

All those questions have complicated answers.

Reply

Yep so two treadmill accidents come to mind. Fell off the back both times. Have two huge scars to show from both. When I was a teenager I took the rails off the home treadmill thinking it would make me faster. It was also quite dangerous…
What can I say, I did everything I could to run fast.

Reply

I have never had a treadmill accident (jinx) but I have seen others fall.
Any and all of the above. With ranch dressing please.
Michaels exercise room (I use the term loosely) is the messiest and I never go in there. Any room that he wanders through actually ends up a mess.

I had the MOST embarrassing treadmill accident a few months ago! I was running along, at the gym, waiting for my friend to show up. I saw her come into the gym, and it was like I “forgot” I was on a moving conveyor belt–absolutely no idea what my problem is. I just stopped running all of a sudden and turned sideways like I was on the ground…..obvi I was not. WENT FLYING and totally caused a scene. I am so awesome!

Reply

wait, that dog is a toy?? it looks so real! Omg!

I hear ya about home-workout rooms being danger zones. one time I put my bike trainer in my bedroom so I could watch tv on my laptop while riding…and I guess I went too hard because my bookshelf fell down…oops…

I’ve totally ate it on the treadmill twice. Once at my parents house and once at the gym. When it happened at the gym, I just sat on the floor and laughed hoping it would make it better that I was laughing at myself. I’m sure everyone thought I was crazy. So embarassing! Btw, since I’m getting back into running, what type of treadmill do you use? I couldn’t remember. Adam told me that could be my Christmas/Anniversary/Birthday gift since they are all within three months of each other. Any suggestions for someone who is getting back into it after being away from running for the last year and a half? I’m so excited to get back into it and have spent the afternoon reading all of my runner’s world magz from the last year and doing research online.

Reply

waffle fries, yum!

that little puppy is adorable…I could handle something like that. I’m not ready for the real responsibility of a dog at this point, I’d rather sleep in bed late than let a dog outside :(

Reply

I HAVE actually fallen off the treadmil – many, many years ago. It was embarrassing, but thankfully, I wasn’t hurt. Just my pride. :)

Reply

Im so glad you didn’t fall. I was running on our treadmill and apparently our yellow lab wanted to join me. She jumped on the treadmill and tripped me. We both went down hard! The worst part is that our treadmill ends right where the wall begins so I was trapped between the wall and the dog and couldnt get off the moving belt for a minute. My knees were skinned right to the bone. Blood was dripping down my leg and it hurt so bad. Took well over a month to heal and now I have these awesome scars on my knees that are totally white and dont tan.

Reply

OUCH!! She wanted to join you….your lab must really love you! I am so sorry that you got stuck and I can’t even imagine going through what you did. WOW! That is really scary!

Reply

Yet another reason why I don’t like treadmills! At least you didn’t fall, heh. I’ve never gotten injured on a treadmill before, but that’s probably because I avoid them like the plague.

Reply

Wow that sounds so scary- glad you’re ok!! Also I am super jealous that you had the option to attend a live class by Billy Blanks! I went through a phase a few years ago where I would prance around my living room doing his dvds..or at least attempt to! If my closet counts as a room, it wins as the messiest in my home—> it’s gotten so bad that the idea of sorting it out scares me!

Reply

Ayyyy! that’s so scary!!! I always hit the front of the treadmill with my hand. That’s my biggest injury. But sometimes it REALLY hurts. I saw someone in college AFTER they fell off the treadmill. OWW!

I love your stalker picture. I do that to my husband. Lol.

Reply

I was wearing a college shirt of my husbands as a warm up layer and took it off and tried to throw it while running on the treadmill and it got stuck in the belt at the bottom and shredding the shirt and gave it the weirdest burns. The treadmill made terrible sounds and abruptly came to a halt, but I was fine. My husband was NOT impressed and claimed it was his favorite shirt. I told him about it, but hid the shirt. He saw the photos on my blog and was again, NOT impressed with mishap.

Onion rings all the way.

Reply

oh my gosh that would have scared the living bageezus out of me!!!

i’ve never fallen off the treadmill, but i’ve been VERY close to falling off the elliptical. if i have my music on i can’t see people until they are THIS close to me. well, i was going about my business and my friend thought it funny to sneak up and try to scare me…their mission was accomplished.

Reply

bahahaha I love that you got hit by your suitcase! I hope you’re okay though :) I usually end up watching my ipod or water bottle flying between my legs and off the treadmill when my clumsy hands can no longer manage to hang on!
Have you seen this video?

Ouch on the suitcase hitting your legs! I am not a fan of running on a treadmill so thankfully I have never fallen! Glad you are ok! Oh tae-Bo! I used to do the videos and loved them… So cool!

Favorite fries are actually sweet potato! But, if not those… Curly fries from Arbys or Waffle fries from chick fila! Yum…

The messiest room in my house is my back room that we use as a playroom… A 2 year old can destroy in .2 seconds!

That dog looks so real I don’t believe you that it’s a toy! ;) we need another dog quick! We miss our old one so much.. I am trying to convince my husband we need one as a late Christmas present after we get home from our New Years Trip to Hawaii.. Hoping to get a lab or a labadoodle!!

Have a great Tuesday!!

I totally remember the Taebo phase. I did those all the time when they first came out. I love that your family has such fun traditions like the 11pm dinner. I keep telling Brandon how I want to incorporate fun traditions as we begin having/raising kids. Curly fries all the way!

I love onion rings!
You MUST MUST MUST got to Maui, Hawaii. The onion rings on that island were amazing. It was the highlight of my honeymoon. (biking down the volcano was a close second, but it was really all about the onion rings) The onions, are grown nearish to the pineapples and thanks to cross pollination onions that could be cousins with apples and AMAZING onion rings

I rarely run on a treadmill. I really need to get one for the house (since winter is coming and I’m getting a little tired of running in the rain) but I haven’t been able to pull the trigger on that big of an expense.

The messiest room in our house belongs to my 13 year old daughter, but other than that I’d have to say the office. It seems to be the catch all room for things that don’t seem to have anywhere else to go. It’s pretty frustrating when I go to sit down at the desk to do homework and I have to move a huge pile of laundry off the laptop…

Reply

I was running on my treadmill in my basement when my little kitty Azrael decided it was a good idea to run across the back of it – and she got LAUNCHED… she was okay, I only laughed after I made sure, haha.

Curly fries, especially if they’re spicy fries. Mmmmm!

Ummm, until yesterday, our spare bedroom. It was COVERED with laundry that needed to be (re)folded and put away. The cats had made themselves comfortable among the clothes, so some needed to be rewashed too :(

Oh man. I love curly fries so much!!
Right now the messiest room in my apartment is my bedroom! Not good…

I know this is a late comment, but I had to share my treadmill accident. It was at a New York Sports Club in Hoboken, NJ and the place was packed! I spotted an open treadmill and just stepped right on to claim it not realizing the person before left it on and the belt was moving! Yes, I took a tumble backward and people just looked at me. I was OK and jumped up to turn it off right away hoping not many people noticed. I have an elliptical accident as well but I’ll share that another day!

I almost fell on the mill the other day. I was watching tv and got too close to the front and tripped!
