How We Met…….

October 6, 2011

Today some students saw a picture of me and Billy on my desk and they asked me how the heck I got so lucky:)  Okay, they asked how Billy and I met, but I know what they were really thinking.

So, I told them….almost the whole story.  I thought I would share it on the blog too because it makes me really happy to think about.

I don’t actually have any pictures of when we first met (I didn’t want to creep him out with my picture taking obsession yet) and so I will just post some random pictures from when we first started dating.  I talked a little bit about it HERE in my post about how he proposed but thought I would go into more detail about how we met.

Beach 4

My roommates (bff’s) and I randomly decide to move into a brand new apartment complex right before I started my junior year of college.  It was awesome.  I don’t know why we chose that apartment complex (oh yeah, for the pool) but I am sure glad we did.

N17816157 34061928 3526

The first Sunday that we lived in the new apartment came and we got all dolled up (aka I actually used to get ready more than my now two times a week routine) and headed on over to church.  When we pulled into the parking lot we noticed a bunch of guys getting out of the car right next to us.

IMG 0029

Billy’s roommates were out of control (and Billy is kind of quiet at first) and so I don’t really remember him when we were talking in the parking lot because his roommates were running around and talking our ears off.

DSCN0729

The first time I REALLY saw him was when my roommate (Jessie) and I were sitting in church and Billy walked in front of us to get to his seat………No joke, I leaned over to Jess and said, “I will make out with him” (didn’t tell my students that part).  Hey you have to call dibs.

IMG 0727

We didn’t actually end up talking at church that day but he was living in the same apartment complex and that same day my roommates and I walked by his apartment, their front door was wide open and we all started chatting.  I thought he had a girlfriend and I remember telling my mom that night how bummed I was that he wasn’t available.

Turns out no girlfriend and I received this from him the next day via facebook.  PS that is an old phone number, so don’t get offended if I don’t text back. I am too lazy to try and white it out.

Screen Shot 2011 10 05 at 10 43 07 AM

We were actually at his apartment hanging out with his roomates and using their internet when he messaged me while he was on his lunch break at work.

I guess I have always been obsessed with using … in everything that I write.  It actually looks as though my grammar has improved over the last few years:)

IMG 0735

After our first date (Macaroni Grill and then we watched Neverland) he had me hooked and we saw eachother every day for the next two years and then we decided to get married…..best/happiest/awesomest decision ever.

I think I might get in a little trouble for posting this last picture…….Billy doesn’t normally wear tank tops……it was for an 80′s party, even though the people in the background look normal, I think we may have gone overboard.

IMG 0888

And we lived happily ever after.

How did you meet your significant other?

Any funny/weird/awkward stories of first dates?

-On a first date one time the guy wouldn’t let me bring my waterbottle into his precious car…..I know I spill a lot but come on, no waterbottle?!?!

Britt @ Runwithbritt October 6, 2011 at 6:08 am

Awwww this story is adorable. It was love at first site ;) Billy sure does know how to rock that tank top. Haha.
I can’t believe that guy wouldn’t let you bring a waterbottle into the car. What a jerk! I’ve never had anything that awkward happen thank goodness.

Awww that is an awesome story!

My husband and I literally met under an apple tree…..I was behind my apartment picking apples from our apple tree with a roommie. We had been laughing, yelling, and having fun, and my future husband had been in the apartment next door doing a service project. He heard all the commotion outside and decided to come and investigate……

He literally stood there for a few mins (he told me lateR) and watched us shake apples off the tree and run around grabbing them. He talked to us for a few mins (I was not interested at all) and then later saw me at church the next week. he asked me out 1.5 weeks later after I ran the St George marathon (And he had made me a race packet/goodie bag), and we saw each other every day after that….adn even did a TRIathlon together before we started officially dating.

Married him about 9-ish months after meeting under the apple tree and we’re living our happily ever after :)

We met in college. No extraordinary stories of first dates. But over the top romantic gestures make me uncomfortable so I would have gone running for the door.

I met my guy at work. A friend from where I volunteered as an EMT introduced him to me because he thought we would get along well. We ended up working on the same ambulance and hanging out….four years later we live together but no longer work at the same place.

Mike and I actually grew up and went to HS in the same town, but never met. Then we both happened to go visit friends in Maine (we live in CT) on the same weekend at the same school. There was also some awkward facebooking involved and then two years later we got married!

I met my husband when we were both freshmen in college. We lived in the same dorm. He was actually behind the dumpster when I was taking out the garbage and jumped out to say hello. I thought he was weird. He went back to his wing and told all the guys he just met the girl he was going to marry! Our first actual date was about 3 months later. He was afraid to ask me out, so his roommate did it for him! We’ve been married 19 years…. (Yes, I’m old!:))

Cute story!! I used (and still do sometimes) … all the time too, so you’re not the only one. ;)

My husband and I met at church! We’ve known one another since he was 12 and I was 9. He was always the “cool guy” at youth group, and I was always the shy one. One year when I was in college and home for Christmas, we started talking at church, he asked me out, and the rest is history! :)

You two look awesome in that 80′s getup! My boyfriend and I met at work, but it took us 2 years to get together because we both were in relationships. Friendships can definitely turn into love and it did for us!

you guys are too cute!! hahaha, i love the 80s picture at the end, I dont even think you guys went overboard ENOUGH in my opinion ;)

Me and Kev had seen each other around town for a while, but I’m a complete space cadet and when I’m in a relationship I honestly dont really pay attention to other guys. So…needless to say there were brief encounters but I never really thought about him too much…after me and my ex fiance broke up, I was going out alot more and hanging out with girls around town. We were hanging out at the local bar one night and he was there and I was sad but we struck up conversation…I asked him if he could give me a ride home and then I ended up ditching him because I decided to hang out with someone else instead. (i was a JERKface) I figured he probably wouldnt talk to me again but I saw him the next night as well and profusely apologized for such a poop. (my friends were with me and they were like…really?? He was definitely the complete opposite of guys I had been interested in before!) He shrugged it off and invited me to hang out at his apartment with his roommates that night….anddd for 3 weeks we were inseperable but he kept telling me he was not looking for a relationship. At the same point, I had just gotten out of a 7 year relationship so its not like I was jumping for a boyfriend either. I was the one who asked him out on our first “official” date. We went to a nice restaurant nearby and I was amused by just how well we clicked and how he wasn’t realizing it yet. He finally asked me to start dating that night ;) sucker! hahaha…it still amuses me thinking of how many times we had encountered each other before we started really talking and just how oblivious I can be. But its 2 years later and we are still ridiculously happy together. Very very funny how life ends up working out!

I actually met Alex at work. We both worked at the same television station…He was in news (he’s a news producer) and I was in sales (I sell commerical time–NOT glamorous). We actually met on a smoke break (I don’t smoke anymore–That’s gross), and when he walked through the door, the first time I saw him, I literally felt like I had been waiting for him and he was FINALLY there. It was instant. I instantly felt calm. The thing was, I didn’t understand that it was romantic feeling.

Time went on, and we would chat here and there and laugh a LOT. One day he told me that he was moving 3 hours away. I thought we were just friends, so I couldn’t understand why I had this sick feeling in my stomach. He invited me to his going away party the following week.

Of course, I went to the party. I was kind of seeing someone else at the time (not seriously), so I had to leave before anyone else had to leave. He was insistant that he walk me to my car, which I didn’t understand. We got out to my car and I told him that everyone would miss him and that he better stay in touch and then I gave him a hug…Then he kissed me and that was that. I was done.

We dated long distance for a year, until it got to me too much for him and he decided to move back. He proposed at a Cold Play concert (after asking my mom for permission) and my response was “of course.” The tone of the response was like, “shoot, you didn’t even have to ask since I’ve already decided that we’re pretty much forever.”

He’s a fabulous step-father to my 12 year old daughter and we have a 2 year old daughter together. I respect him more than anyone else on the planet. He is literally the best man I know. He is amazing, and I’m a lucky girl. He’s pretty lucky too, I think.

I was BFF’s with my husband’s fiance who passed away from ALS at age 26. I had never met him before she died, and we didn’t meet until after the memorial. Months and months passed of us being friends and mourning together and one day it just kind of happened. It was really wonderful, and still is. I am really lucky.

Once, on a first date, a guy showed up with a leather vest on. I tried to RUN AWAY like the wind.

so the boyfriend and i met three years ago when i moved into the apartment building he was living in. he was smoking a cigarette on the stoop, i was bringing my triathlon bike inside – i said something like “yeah we have all been there” – meaning the smoking. he laughed. fast forward to last year when my boyfriend at the time was living with me – i was called by a frantic neighbor saying the water heater from the upstairs apartment had broke and was leaking into my apartment. the kid who lived above me was the cutie on the back stoop. he spent a lot of time in my apartment fixing stuff but did most communicating with my boyfriend at the time. fast FAST forward – boyfriend and i broke up, i remembered how cute the kid from upstairs was, i emailed him, and he told me had his eye on me for 3 years. he didnt think i would be interested and wanted to respect my relationship at the time. but now we are happily dating and the rest is history.

Janae, that is such a cute story! You guys are adorable together!

I met my husband at work. We were both in relationships at the time and never even talked to each other (although I always thought he was cute). One day we were the only ones in the office and decided to go out to lunch to talk about this deal we were working on. I had broken off my engagement a few weeks earlier (this was July, but I hadn’t told anyone at work), but ended up telling him about it. Several weeks later, he said his marriage had fallen apart and he and the wife were separated and filing for divorce (he’s a very private person). We bonded over sharing each other’s pain. He asked me out in December and it was history after that. A weird start, but it worked out and now we’re happily married.

We met when I was on vacation on Catalina Island with my college bestie and Matt was working a fishing charter. My friend and I were going to go to a bar that night but it turned out to be closed. There were these 2 guys (one of which was Matt) standing outside the bar that directed us to another bar that was open. My friend and I go and about 10 minutes later the guys walk in. The other guy says to me “Tell me ladies, did you 2 just come here because this guy (pointing at Matt) told you to?” And we said yes. Other guy shakes his head and slams a $20 bill down on the bar and slides it to Matt. I helped win him a bet! 2 days later, Matt drove up to Santa Monica to take me out to dinner and the rest is history. :) Here’s the whole story: http://calisurfergirl.blogspot.com/2010/05/how-we-got-here.html

He proposed to me by putting the ring in one of those plastic bubble things that you get out of 25 cent machines with different toys in them. Ah, I love thinking about it!

Frist date story-We decided to go to a party ‘together’ so it was really casual. He didn’t drink, but was fine with me drinking. We ended up kissing later and he seriously asked me to rinse my mouth out because he could taste the alcohol and it grossed him out. :(

I met my hubby in our university’s running club. I went for an evening run with the club, ended up being left behind, running in the dark by myself. Just as I’m about to bail on the run and go home, a guy appears. The running club’s president. He finishes out the run with me. A few years later and during a really sweaty run, he’s down on one knee proposing to me. :)

So funny/cute! I love the old facebook convo!!
Torrance and I met in 7th grade through a mutual friend… except up until a few years ago we had different stories until he reminded me how we REALLY met.
I remembered it as I got stuck sitting next to him in an english class one time (in 7th grade) because i w as sitting in the front (like a nerd) and he was in the back but got in trouble so the teacher sent him to the front coincidentally next to me. and he made me laugh because he was talking about how the teacher had a “five-head” instead of a “fore-head” (mean, but funny). BUT when i told this story to someone like 3 years ago he corrected me and said that was NOT the first time we met. and he was right… i guess i forgot.
How we reallllly met was a week before that standing outside at lunchtime. i overheard him telling a friend nearby he had forgotten his lunch money at home and i butted in randomly and offered to give him 5$ I had on me because i felt bad. he said he never forgot it because he thought i was the nicest person EVER because we had never ever spoken 2 words to eachother before that. and then we dated for 2 weeks which consisted of holding hands and one time we kissed (he had braces, hehe) and then ended up actually dating 2 years later when I was a freshman in highschool, we had hung out a few times because we had some mutual friends. and now we r BFFs and have been together since. awww!

I met my hubby on a cruise. :) For real. I was living in San Diego (going to nursing school) and he lived in Michigan. My BFF and I wanted to go on a cool vacation over winter break and neither of us had been anywhere out of the country ever in our lives, so we picked a cruise. And hubby was on the cruise with 8 guys from his work (his boss paid for all of them to go, since they had all had a great work year.) We met within 10 min. of being on the ship and we all hung out the entire cruise (7 days) and kept in touch after, and met up a few times, and knew it was LOVE. That was 20 years and 2 kids ago. We are living happily ever after.

And I totally think the cruise company should let us be their spokespeople and give us a free cruise.

Kelly in Michigan (yes…..I moved to be with him.)

Love your story! And I like telling mine so I will share it with you!

My junior year of college I did a study abroad in Asia for a trimester. Chris was also on the trip with me! We ended up being best friends throughout the entire trip because we both had significant others (though I may or may not have stalked him the entire time in China….I’m a creeper). We eventually both grew feelings for one another and knew we had to let our boyfriend and girlfriend go because those relationships were definitely not right for us. The best decision of my life was taking a chance on some boy I met in a strange environment!

What a beautiful couple: meant to be! Facebook has made college dating so much easier!! or, maybe not, i dunno. You set your eye on the prize and scored a winner!

I met “Coach” coaching! :) Having an office next door to me–he simply couldn’t keep away from me!! :)

Aww what a fantastic story and I LOVE the roller skating pic haha!

I met Tripp at his ski house in VT….I knew we were going to some kid’s house and his name was Tripp, but a. I thought it was a weird name and b. I had never met him before…so when we got there I saw his little brother and thought it was him…until, the real Tripp (my guy) started flirting with me and I stupidly asked his name….woops!! I still haven’t told him, I thought he was his brother for the first couple of hours we were up there! Well we hung out every weekend for the next couple of months and have lived together for over 2 years now!!

OMG I LOVE THIS POST! So adorbs.

Hubs and I were set up on a blind date.
So were our parents.
So were all of our Grandparents.
(Fun, huh?)
We ate dinner at a local brew-pub and I laughed at all of his hilarious jokes. The rest is history. I was hooked and in love… and so was he :)
1 year later he took me ring shopping.
3.5 years after that he finally proposed.
9 months after that we got married.
That was 5 months ago tomorrow and we couldn’t be happier!

Met my fiance at a school function (we both teach at the same school district) and now some of my students figured out the connection that we are getting married and they think it’s crazy!

Love the story of how y’all met. Adam & I grew up in the same town and lived about 5 minutes from each other. We knew who each other were by name, and even went to some of the same parties our mutual friend would have. In college, I waited tables with his younger brother and little sister over the summer. After college, our mutual friend had a birthday celebration and invited both of us to his get together. I immediately thought he was cute and walked over to introduce myself. Thankfully, knowing his brother and sister helped as a conversation starter. By the end of the night he asked for my number. On my drive home he called and asked me on a date. I agreed, but was a little nervous. I had just come out of a relationship and I he seemed to good to be true. I didn’t want to get my heart broken, so I said I was sick the day of the date. Huge regret. Fast forward seven months later and I was sending a message to a friend on AOL IM and accidently sent it to him. His response was “I bet this is the last time I hear from you.” I felt really horrible about how I handled things and apologized. We started talking and made plans for another date. My sister had won tickets to Gavin Degraw (one of my favs) and gave them to me. I asked if he would like to go. I was so certain he wouldn’t show based on the past, but we met for dinner and he was there when I arrived. We had a fabulous TexMex meal and as we started walking next door to the venue where the concert would be held, it started to RAIN CATS & DOGS! Both of us were completely drenched by the time we walked inside, not to mention freezing from our wet clothes. I wasn’t going to let it ruin our night. So we sat and had a great time at the concert, in our wet clothes, and made plans for another date. From that point on, we were together almost every evening. I knew he was the one on our second date and four months later we were engaged. We were married eight months after getting engaged.

Aw you two are so freaking adorable together!!! I love your story of how you guys met! My bf and I met through my cousin and her now husband…they kind of thought we would be good together and I guess they were right because we ended up kissing (a lot) the night we met. And neither of us EVER do things like that haha.

Such a great story Janae!

On my first date with my now husband, he called and asked me to come to a movie with him. Great! Well, at the time he wasn’t old enough to drive. So his 2 friends came along with him to the movie. Our first date wasn’t very romantic. Hanging out with him and 2 guys I didn’t know. When the movie was over, his friends jumped in their car and left the two of us standing in front of our cars not knowing what to do. AWKWARD!!!!!! It turned out ok though. We dated through high school, college, and grad school. And finally married 7 years later!

Met on a blind date…my mom and his aunt hooked it up.

Told him on the second date that I was moving to Memphis…kind of awkard, but 5 years later, I guess it all worked out for the best!
