Workout Battle Wounds

This morning was glorious.  I slept in. No gym for this woman.  I am going tonight with my sis to get some hard core lifting in and so Wednesday morning was meant for getting out of bed at 7:21 and making it to school at 7:45.

I know some of you don’t believe me but I am not exaggerated at all on the above statement.  The key to taking less than 10 minutes to get ready for work is to not get ready.  The night before: pack all of your things and place them in front of the door, have all of your work clothes laid out and make sure to have toothpaste on your toothbrush so that nothing will slow you down.  Bfast was even packed and ready for me to grab.

Bfast for the last 3 weeks:  Egg sandwich with jam.  2 whole wheat TOASTED slices of bread, an egg and raspberry jam.  I am a creature of habit.

What I wanted to talk about are battle wounds from working out.  I didn’t do a close up on those suckers of mine because they are gross looking close up but do you see those lovely calluses on my hand?  They are 3d in real life and both hands have about 4.

I remember when Billy held my hand for the first time as he was gazing into my eyes about to profess his love he said….’How the heck did you get those crazy calluses?’

I told him it was all of the manual labor I do and my favorite ice cream spoon leaves evidence of its overuse.

Why do I have these?  I guess from the ellipctical, weights and the bike….maybe I grip on too tightly or something.

What are some battle wounds you have from working out?  Missing toe nails, chaffing marks, ever fallen while running?

Anyone wear gloves when they lift to prevent those beautiful calluses that I have?

What was/is your workout today?

i should prob get gloves cause i think its from lifting…but i am just not that intense enough
and spinning for me today!!<3

ahhhh i get those too!! and lets not even go anywhere near my feet…they are gross…between years of softball and now running i have NO hope! haha. workout today is going to be 3-4 miles in the canyon with my pup this evening. hoping for nice weather, being able to breathe at altitude again and no crazy canyon stalkers…or else i will send my 7 lb pup after them.

I used to row in college and all our hands were full of blisters and calluses… needless to say it was pretty gross :-p

Reply

When I was a competitive gymnast, my hands were nasty. There was not an inch that did not have a callus or blister (sometimes I’d have blisters inside of other blisters). Right now I have slight calluses from my road bike/spin class and weights. I really try not to grip too hard when I ride, but then I’ll realize I have white knuckles.

I used to have scraped knees all the time because I did hurdles in high school… and clearly wasn’t good at it :)

haha- I have workout battle wounds too :)
One from this morning actually, I have a huge bruise on my shin because I actually laid the bosu ball down on my shin instead of the floor. I know that sounds totally strange, but it actually hurt really bad…it was just too early for me to function ;)
& I have callouses from weights too, & I even use gloves! I get them under my middle finger & ring finger.

Reply

I actually fell at the end of my run a couple weeks ago…in front of a large crowd watching a soccer game. Embarrassing.

I used to wear weight lifting gloves but they fell apart and I never got new ones.

My workout today…evening yoga class. I am tired and stressed and it sounds so good right now!

Reply

I have some major blisters from the fins that I wear in my swimming for fitness class. ouchies. and when I took a weight lifting class, I used to get callouses all the time.

also, I used to ride horses all the time (it was technically my job, but it was also a super work out), and once I was bitten by a horse! now it just looks like I kind of bruised my leg, but it is definitely a scar.

Reply

I never wear gloves…don’t like the feeling of something between me and the weights. Just me??

Reply

I used to get calluses from lifting weights, and also from the elliptical! So weird, but I think they are a sign of fitness, so wear them with pride!
Workout today will be an easy run!

I have many exercise battle wounds. They are all from the same thing: Falling while running. I have dark marks that look like bruises on my knees and arms — but they’re not bruises. They’re from months and months ago. They’re horribly ugly scars. Oh well.

I oversleep about 4 out of 5 days a week and I manage to shower and everything in 20 mins. That means blowdrying my mane, putting make-up on and straightening the hair in addition to the rest of the morning ritual. It’s like my secret talent. Except not so secret.

Omg add half a wedge of laughing cow cheese to the other side of the bread on your breakfast sandwich…it is SO good! I have mine on an English muffin with the cow cheese, raspberry jam, and 1 egg. I can’t get enough of it!

The quickest I have been able to get ready for work is 20 minutes – 10 minutes is a little bit too quick for me! You are a pro! :)

Reply

yeahh battle scars!! they mean you’re a beast! I have calluses from the bike too, and I also have a lot of scars on my lower legs because I run trails a lot and thorns and bushes sometimes come out of nowhere and attack me.

my workout = a 20 minute run and an hour on the bike! and hopefully I will do core work soon once I find the motivation haha

My sister gets huge calluses from rowing on her crew team. She’s so proud of them!

Reply

I have the exact same thing going on with my hands. I am pretty sure it is because I grip the stupid elliptical too tight. Darn that stupid machine. ha ha!

have fun at the gym with your sister. :)

Two weeks ago I fell while running early in the morning before the sun was up. I have no idea what I tripped on but whatever it was knocked me down pretty bad. I scraped both elbows, my hips, and belly button. When I fell I skidded across the pavement and my shirt went up, still healing from it. I’ve never scraped my belly button and didn’t think it was even possible…but leave it to me to accomplish the unthinkable!

Reply

No callus {perhaps I should pick up some weights?} but definitely bruises & chaffing marks. And I never thought I would become ok with losing a toenail….

Reply

Oh my garsh, this post was perfect timing! I totally bit it on my run today! First time ever and wow, did it hurt. I got up and kept running though! (You can totally see the road rash on my arm and legs on my blog. Yeah, I posted pictures. Close ups even.)

I have a few scars now from chafing. They will go away someday, right?

Reply

I just got a road bike and despite spinning and being an expert at getting out of the clips on a spin bike, I have had such troubles getting used to unclipping on my road bike! I definitely have tipped over, feet still attached to the pedals and have some scary battle wounds on my knees and elbows. Is it socially acceptable for a 26 year old to wear elbow and knee pads while riding?!? :)

Reply

OH GIRL…I need elbow pads too. I still fall every now and then. Billy always helps me up and then laughs:)

Reply

That is fast!!! Good effort

I fell over the spinning bike a few weeks ago and had a huge bruise on my shin from catching it on a pedal! oops! am very clumsy sometimes.

was thinking about getting gloves to prevent calluses but feel a little bit self conscious (silly i know) :)

My workout today was spinning class, my teacher is just amazing! She plays her happy-hardcore music so loud but its so fun!

xx

Reply

Wish I could come to that spin class with you! Okay, that bruise accident sounds painful!

Reply

it gets better!! the spin class room now has a disco light!!!

Reply

I have calluses on my hands too but you can barely see them. I’m more impressed by my black toe nails I got from my the killer downhill on my last marathon. But I’m really scared of what they will look like when the nails fall off…has anyone had this??

My workout was an 8 mile recovery run and hopefully yoga tonight!

I got to workout with my old Trainer Eric while in Houston – yesterday Im pretty sure I did a million lunges which means I can’t sit down, move or walk and then today he worked out my upper body – which means I cant move my arms. Tomorrow I should be a complete wreck. BUT it FEELS SO GOOD. After my crazy workout session I then got talked into yoga with my bestie…wow — sore.

I actually have alot of scars from rollerblading! Haha my balance stinks…. :)

I fell into my bf while we were riding bike and he got the scar lolol he was a good sport and took the fall trying to hold up my bike so I didn’t get injured 0-:)

Guess he knew I was prone to injury because the *first* time we ever road together we’d taken a million years to go borrow bikes from my parents’ house, air up the tires, oil up gears, lug bikes to park… and at the park we couldn’t really see the sidewalk just a rocky downhill and he said “Babe we don’t have Mountain Bikes, this isn’t the right kind of park.. we should just give u–” me – “NO!!!! It took us so long to get here I REALLY want to ride bikes!! umm.. I know there was a sidewalk here somehwere we just have to get over this silly hill… don’t be such a baby!”

::here’s the part where I try to go on the rocky downhill with a regular $100 bike from Walmart that doesn’t even adjust speeds and brakes from pedalling backwards::

::SPLAT::

Pretty much just flipped over the top and my legs were bleeding everywhere.. the bf was nice enough not to say “I told you so” although his eyes sure said it! Bonus? by falling down the hill I found that stupid sidewalk path…. should’ve just kept walking a little further…

Reply

Oh yes… and the million times I fell off the Eliptical from going too fast too long and too stressed in my College Gym — ppl looked at me like I was cray crayyyzy! :-D I didn’t care.. I got back on and finished the workout. duh.

Callusses from working out? Wow, hard core!! PS love your breakfast..eggs and jam are amazing together!!

PS. Don’t forget to enter my very first GIVEAWAY!!

Knowing how much you love cereal, I think you’ll like this one :) :)

I used to get marks like that when I used the rowing machine a lot, but they could also be from weightlifting or gripping/sliding on the handlebars during your century ride?

I am very clumsy, but have only fallen once so far running (watch me fall tomorrow…) and posted about it here (warning – don’t eat while looking at these pics hehe): http://www.almostovernow.com/2011/02/wordless-tuesday.html

I think those are some pretty good war wounds ;)

Hi Jessica! Been hoping to catch you commenting on someones blog! Lol. I used to read your blog, but recently(like that least few months) whenever I try to get to it the internet freezes! It’s on your blog and one other that I’ve tried before. It happens everytime and then I’ll close the Internet explorer when it freezes and restart it and have to quickly shut your web page before it freezes again. Any idea why this might be? don’t necessarily expect you to, but I’d like to be able to click on over without things freezing 8]

I get AWFUL red marks that look hideous right underneath my breasts from my sports bra due to running.. does any one else get these? and lots of BLISTERS..soo painful!

Reply

I used to get those and then I started using BODYGLIDE. It worked wonders for me. I’d get the marks from chaffing due to my skin rubbing with my sports bra. But BODYGLIDE definitely helped!

Reply

My latest was chaffing from my Camelbak!! Ouch!! From all this marathon training, I have gotten so far: chaffing where the sun don’t shine, blisters and a bruised hand when I fell while running the other day. Yeah, wasn’t too proud of myself there :)

Reply

I have these nasty blister type things on the balls of my feet! I went to a podiatrist and he biopsied them and basically they are just damaged nerves from where I don’t have a fat pad on the ball of my feet. But because of them it hurts to wear any shoes that put pressure on the ball of my feet – like heels! I also can’t do the elliptical because by the end my feet have gone numb from the pain. It sucks and I’ve never heard of anyone else having it!

Reply

My poor feet will never look the same. And I sometimes get callouses also, when I lift weights…which is particularly funny since I’m lifting about 2 lbs – I guess I get the callouses anyway because I do it so infrequently, my hands are like “whaaaat?” I also have permanent marks from sports bra chaffage…gosh I am so attractive!

Reply

Blisters, missing toe nails, chafe marks. Have never fallen (jink).
I should wear gloves, not for the calluses but for the sweating. I feel like my hands are going to slip.
Workout was 2 miles (according to the plan) and some stretching. More stretching and balance work later.

I seem to always have cuts on my legs. I don’t know if I bump into the treadmill when I’m running or get rug burn on my pilates mat, or what, but I just found another one today, haha.

Reply

I currently have only 7 functional toenails. Gross, I know, but years of college soccer and now five years of mar running and they all at some point or another crack, turn blue, and die. It is so gross. I also get terrible raw red blisters under the bottom band of my sports bra.ouch.

No workout today except for dog walking. I teach and work from 745 to 4, grad school from 4 to 630, and tutoring in my classroom until 745. Crazy schedule plus I’m pregnant means I’m going home to eat and sleep! I haven’t been able to run as much with the whole bun in the oven thing, and it is killing me.

Reply

MORGAN!!! HOW DO YOU DO IT ALL!?!?! You are my hero! You better go home and rest. CONGRATULATIONS! I am so excited for you.

I felt so hardcore the day I realised I had callouses on my hands from weights.

On the other hand, I felt so lame when I started getting blisters/callouses on my THUMBS (the insides of them, if that makes sense) from the elliptical.

My feet are just two giant callouses from running hahaha

Lets see, the scars I still have from 7 years ago taking a three mile walk and a dog bit me. The scar on my knee from when I fell about a story climbing rocks..6 years ago I think, lol (it was weird ’cause I landed straight forward on my hands and knees like a cat!) I don’t have any scars from running. I have one from riding my bike though a month or so ago. A lady pulled out of a parking lot drive way and almost ran me over, but I fell to the side of her…and she kept going!D8< got a scar from that now. I got to look uper tough though going the last three miles with blood running down my leg XP I wear gloved when I ride my bike if I know I'm going far. I tend to grip to hard, so I always have to catch myself and relax my hands. My workout today was 10 miles of with hills. I have a marathon in two weeks (am I gonna be scarred by that? Lol) So when I was done with my run this morning I asked myself "so could I do that again right now?" luckily I thought "yes" hehe..of course maybe I shoulda added 3 more miles and then asked myself that question. xP

I always wear gloves when I weight lift because I get those too. Sometimes I still get them if I wear gloves and do pull ups. I gotta grip tight to lift this body!
And I’m a creature of habit too. I have one of 3 things for breakfast: oatmeal, a smoothie, or a morningstar sausage in a mini-bagel. That’s been breakfast for the past 2 years of my life. I need to switch it up because I’m always hungry an hour later.

Those are hard-core calluses! Personally, I have wimpy, soft hands. My battle wounds lately have come in the form of chafing. The worst was after a recent half mary when I carried my phone in a plastic baggie in my waistband. Yeah, the corner of the bag felt annoying through the whole run, but I didn’t realize how gruesome it was until I finished.

I’m scared to lift because blisters hurt before they become calluses.

Today was a modified workout so I could help my 8 y.o. daughter “train” for the mile run at school, then after I dropped her off at home, ran a speedy 3.5-ish to beat the onset of darkness.

Hi Janae,
Sorry, long time, no comment. I was in LA soaking up some late summer sun without a care (or computer) in the world.
I love my battle wounds. I have scars all over my feet from running, banged up toenails that will never recover despite multiple pedicures, and a new bruise every week from…goodness knows what?
My theory is that this body is mine to write my life story on and every scar, every bruise, every line is a memory of something I was doing, some way I was making my life happen.
So YAY for battle scars!!

Reply

I love getting calluses from playing the guitar because then I can play longer without my fingers hurting! Calluses are signs of hard work so good job!

My weirdest/most intense work-out injury was when, during the last 100m of a 5k race in High School, a girl ran me over stepping on my foot with her spikes which poked through my shoe and into my toe! Ouch!!
It wasn’t as bad as it could have been but it was pretty crazy!

Keep up the good work!!!

Reply

My legs and knees are still beyond bruised and scraped from my last adventure race (rocky mud pits and barbwire). I’m missing 2 toenails and those areas are completely blistered and callused. Um yeh, I wear sandals to teach and think some high school girls vomited when they saw my feet. A high school boy told me my hands look like a mans regarding my calluses. I’m proud!!

Reply

I run with the 30 sec faster pace group…

& today i ran to zumba & back!!. 5k… little over

Reply

I have a scar on my left shin from a workout wound. When doing a bench jump I missed the bench and dragged my shin down the metal bar on the side of it. Ouch!

And funnily enough I don’t get calluses even without gloves and with heavier lifting.

Reply

Yesterday, I fell on my run. Actually, I was still walking out of the parking lot and hadn’t even started running yet. I barely stepped funny on a rock and I went down hard. So now I have bruises and scabbed knees like a 7 year old. I’m such a klutz, that this isn’t the first time.

Reply

I need to get some lifting gloves before I start up my weight training again this winter. I started to get some pretty gnarly calluses when I was lifting a lot earlier this year, but they are almost totally gone now, which means two things: 1) I have a shot at not wrecking my hands this time, and 2) If I don’t wear gloves, my skin is gonna hurt a lot.

Reply

How funny! I just scheduled a blog post for tomorrow morning about my ugly marathon toenails. If my feet weren’t already so troll-like, I would think they were cool, but the toenails just puts my feet over the edge.

Reply

So many of the girls I work with have blisters from lifting! I don’t use weights often enough to have full-blown blisters, but sometimes my hand get rough. Battle wounds are definitely the toenails during training. :) And my workout today was a 5 mile run and a Pilates class!

Reply

I’m so impressed with your dedication to lifting weights. This is one of my goals to work on starting the end of October. Hey girl, I need your address if you still want a Runninghood sticker. :)

Reply

QUick question about your sandwich- doesn’t the egg go hard if you pre-pack it? I’m always worried that it would but if not, it looks like I have a new lunch on my radar! Do you cook it as an omelet?

My workout this week was the first ‘long run’ of my new training plan: 6 miles and I finished strong- bring on 7 next week! :D

Reply

Yep! It does but I don’t mind it if that means I get a little extra sleep! Have a great day gorgeous girl!

Reply

You are so funny!! Way to be an expert at “not getting ready” and still looking fabulous!! I have a few battle wounds (top of my hand, knee and palm) from falling when I was pregnant! I also have a gnarly scar on my knee from tearing my ACL while playing soccer… My feet are all perma callused from soccer days and now running.. And well, my hands are callused from working in my yard!!

My workout today was easy peasy… Long walk with my daughter in her wagon and my pooch!!

Reply

Yes! I have fallen while running on a few occasions, but the time that is most embarrassing was almost 15 years ago. I was running with some new friends, trying to impress them with my running prowess, when I was talking so much that I didn’t notice I stepped into a plastic flower pot and went straight down on my hands, elbows, and knees in traffic! I was literally a bloody mess.

I do wear gloves when I lift and also when I ride my triathlon bike, so my hands won’t go numb after a long time.

Today I rode with my husband for 1.5 hours and then swam at the gym for an hour tonight. Also, did I tell you that I signed up for my very first Ironman in Penticton, Canada for 2012?!?

I hope your lifting sesh with your sister was so much fun!!

Reply

Ahhhhhhh I am so excited for you! Can I come cheer you on? I can’t wait to follow your training!

Reply

I don’t wear gloves while doing strength training(or on the elliptical, bike, etc.) either.
Because of this my husband’s hands are softer than mine!
LOL! Pretty sad!
As for battle scars…I had a gorgeous scare on my knee from falling on ice last winter while running.
Yesterday I did 12 miles on the seated elliptical and a 1 hour yoga class.
This AM is upper body strength and 30 minutes on the elliptical.

Reply

I seem to be the queen of toe blisters this year! Every week, a new one creeps up in a new spot. Also, right now my leg looks like someone beat me up because of the Graston therapy I’ve been getting at the chiropractor!

Reply

I’ve lost more toenails than I can remember (all from soccer, none from running).

I have a major scar on my left knee from running on a gravel track. As I was going full speed crossing my imaginary finish line, I did a beautiful leap into the air and…ate it. I had to walk to a bathroom while blood was running down my leg and onto my shoe :(

I have a big welt on my ankle from last nights soccer game that I don’t know how it got there. I think that’s basically it!

Reply

I get the calluses from lifting. The only thing that is sexier is chafing around the bra line from running.

Reply

I have a pretty intense scrape on my left shin from my trail race last week. I’m thinking about taking today off because I’m really sore. Just thinking. I’m not committed. haha!

Reply

I need to get gloves too..but then I always wanna feel tough and I just KNOW i would leave the store with girly pink ones!

Reply

I have a battle wound on each of my knees and my left arm. After running for four years, I finally had my first fall! I was runner’s roadkill! I was more embarrassed than hurt, but I got up, walked it off and finished my run!

Reply

I most definitely have scars from a few bad chafing/blister incidents. And scars on one knee from a nasty fall during a duathlon a few years ago!

Reply

I have tons of callouses on my hands from years of climbing and now 7 months worth of CrossFit.

An ex-boyfriend commented that I had dry, lizardy man-hands :( I’m glad he’s my ex ha!!

Reply

I always get blisters on the bottom of my big toes from running! No idea why.
I have weight gloves for lifting and I LOVE them!! I got them from target for like $10 and they are pink :)

Reply

I used to have mad callouses on my hands from climbing. (I moved to North Carolina recently and there are no mountains to be climbed…so my callouses are quickly disappearing.) I fell out on a run on the 4th of July this year and have some gross looking scars on my left knee now. I’m actually kind of proud of them, though.
