Favorite stretch!

September 12, 2011

Billy did not okay me posting this picture (actually he doesn’t even know that I took this picture) so if I am sleeping on the couch tonight, I am blaming it on you and the fact that I am addicted to blogging and posting pictures with or without my husbands approval.

I guess that amount of sweat is what happens when you pull out an 11.6 mile run (all uphill, he ran from our house to my parents house) with a 7:50 average pace.

Today after my PAIN FREE 3 mile run, I was going to do some weights but since my sister made me lift really heavy on Saturday, I can barely lift up my arms to put deodarant on let alone lift a weight.  Instead, I spent a good 15 minutes stretching.

I really don’t know if there is anything better (okay, of course there are;) than getting in a good STRONG run and then stretching afterwards while drinking chocolate milk with extra chocolate.  Billy always asks if I want to pour some milk into my cup of chocolate syrup.

I think I did every stretch possible, but the above one that Billy is doing has to be my absolute FAVORITE stretch!  Lying on your back, cross your legs just as you might while sitting in a chair. Grasping the “under” leg with both hands, pull the knee toward your chest until you feel the stretch in your buttocks and hips.

—————————————————————–

What is your favorite stretch?

What was your workout?

3 miles run, 2 miles walk and I might go and ellipticize with the sister later tonight since I am a single woman on Monday and Wednesday nights and would go to bed at 7 pm if I didn’t have anything else planned.

Adrienne S September 12, 2011 at 12:20 pm

My workout today was a class 20min step,20min weights, 20min balance/core. All in one! Then I did 30minutes on the bike and walked 1/2way home from the gym until my friend picked me up.

Okay, that class sounds awesome….I wish we had that!

Billy is a SPEED RACER! I’m jealous, though not of the hills.

My favorite stretch is the pigeon pose. I’ve been told I have the tightest hamstrings ever, so it’s a good thing I like that stretch!

CatieB September 12, 2011 at 12:27 pm

That’s one of my favorite stretches too :)
Awesome job with the pain free 3 miler! Hooray!

love this! Love posting photos without “okay’s” ;)

I hate stretching but I’m with your hubby – If I had to pick one —- he nailed it.

I love that stretch too!

I ran 4 miles this morning. Pain free for me, too, so yay to us both! :) I also did an hour of a mix of stengthening, core, and PT exercises.

My favorite stretch is a hip flexor stretch that I learned in physical therapy for my pelvic stress fracture. Lie on your back on a table so that your butt is barely on the table, and your legs are hanging over the side. Pull one knee up to your chest as far as you can get it, and let the other leg just hang. Hold for one minute. You can tell if your hip flexor is tight if the hanging leg doesn’t want to hang straight down. I can do this one on the cover of my hot tub – it’s padded and exactly the same height. You can also do this while lying on your back on the floor – not quite the same, but it’s still good.

This is an awesome stretch idea! My hip flexors have been hating on me lately, I am totally going to try this.

Janae September 12, 2011 at 1:23 pm

OH GIRL…I am stoked your run was PAIN FREE!!!! Okay, I will be doing that stretch, thank you so much Kim! And Elizabeth, let me know if you try it!

This is absolutely my favorite stretch, as well.
Workout today was 6 mile run…however, workout on Saturday is what I’m super proud of right now. 18 mile run…farthest I’ve run in 5 years.

Janae September 12, 2011 at 1:23 pm

18 MILES JENNIFER!!! YOU ARE AMAZING!! I am so so happy for you and way to go on your 6 mile run today, you are killing it.

Elizabeth @ reads recipes runs September 12, 2011 at 12:37 pm

Hooray for a pain free run!!! My fave stretch is similar to that one, it’s pigeon pose, and it hurts so good after a run it kind of makes me want to cry. The other weekend I went for a 3 mile run/walk and then hit up a yoga class, but it was slow and basically just amazing stretching. It was perfect!

Funny, that stretch that Billy demonstrated so well is my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE of all time.

Reply

Janae September 12, 2011 at 1:24 pm

It really doesn’t get better than that does it?

My workout today consisted of 20 minutes of cardio, then Jillian Michael’s shred….twice. I. Am. Sore. lol

TWICE!!! Who are you? That is awesome. I do it once and I end up crying in fetal position because I am so fatigued ha. Way to go girl!

That’s one of my favs too! I don’t even know what the other one I”m obsessed with is but it looks like child’s pose in yoga with one leg bent up if that makes any sense at all. I just ran a 5 miler at lunch. It was one of the hardest, slowest runs ever. I don’t know what was up, but it was NOT easy!

Reply

Janae September 12, 2011 at 1:30 pm

okay, that sounds amazing right now! Great job getting out during LUNCH to run…that is awesome! I think somedays just suck when it comes to running, I completely understand!

Katherine @ Neon Blonde Runner September 12, 2011 at 1:05 pm

Ooh that is a good one!

I have a set of about 5 stretches (times two for both sides) that I do after every run and I think it’s pretty helpful in keeping me from getting sore. Stretching is such a nice, relaxing part after running, always love it.

Reply

Janae September 12, 2011 at 1:28 pm

Um, is your 5 stretches on your blog? I need to copy you:)

Reply

Wow, I can’t believe he wasn’t into running before; that’s amazing! Awesome on your own run. I’m starting to love running and I never thought I’d say that. Still working towards running a 5K. I love the frog stretch I learned from the P90X Stretch. I am supposed to do 10-min of burpees today. We’ll see. ;)

Reply

Janae September 12, 2011 at 1:26 pm

I know….the best part was he said his long run was FUN!!! I almost had a heart attack when I heard that he thought it was fun! Girl, you are going to rock your 5k! Okay, seriously burpees kill me, let me know how it goes, I know you can do it!

Reply

Maren September 12, 2011 at 1:10 pm

I really like that stretch too! I also do a similar version sitting up with one leg bent and the other ankle resting on the bend leg’s knee. It really stretches out my hips.

Okay that made no sense… but it is a really good stretch.

Reply

Janae September 12, 2011 at 1:21 pm

IT DID MAKE SENSE, and I forgot all about that stretch and I can’t wait to do it again, thanks Maren!

Reply

Andrea September 12, 2011 at 1:15 pm

That is totally my favorite stretch too. It’s a little piece of heaven! Good job, Billy on that run! My workout today is a one hour spin class (YAY!) and some weights…probably gonna do you and your sister’s chest and back routine! :)

Reply

Janae September 12, 2011 at 1:19 pm

WAHOOO!!! Let me know how you like the chest/back routine….I am still sore! Wish I could go to the spin class with you….we would have so much fun!

Reply

Andrea September 12, 2011 at 1:24 pm

This spin class is my fave. My friend teaches it and it is tough but goes by so fast. And I’m nice and sweaty when it’s over! Wish you could come too! :)

Andrea September 12, 2011 at 1:16 pm

OH! I also love a yoga pose called “fish.” You sit on the floor with your legs out in front of you and place a yoga block on the floor right up against your lower back. Then you lay back on the block. Aaaahhhhh!

Holly @ The Runny Egg September 12, 2011 at 1:19 pm

Yes — I love the stretch Billy is doing. Other than that I like downward dog — it is the one yoga move I know and like to do.

Is Billy’s shirt two-toned or is that all sweat on his back? Just curious.

Reply

Janae September 12, 2011 at 1:22 pm

ALL SWEAT…ha, that is why I didn’t ask for permission and will just ask for forgiveness later:) Downward dog sounds SO good right now!

Reply

Ally September 12, 2011 at 1:24 pm

Definitely “pigeon pose”! I have ridiculously tight hip flexors, hamstrings, glutes, etc and wish I could do this at work but I’m pretty sure that would be frowned upon since I’m typically wearing skirts/dresses in my office.

Reply

Janae September 12, 2011 at 1:28 pm

Ha!! I think my students might think I went fully Nutzo, but it does sound so good right now. Let’s both do it after work today okay?

I’m so glad you had pain free miles! nothing better!

That stretch looks amazing. I must (and will!) do it tonight.

3 miles!!! Yay for you!!!! We have the same run planned for today- only I will be doing mine after the kids are in bed and after I watch The Bachelor Pad. (Let’s hope I won’t be running angry because of stupid Vienna and Kasey).

You only live 11 miles from your parents?! I’m so jealous. No wonder you grocery shop there all the time.

Reply

Janae September 12, 2011 at 2:02 pm

Seriously, I am going to get rid of Vienna and Kasey myself if I have to. I wish we could watch it together….Billy refuses to watch it with me:(

Hi Janae!

My favorite stretch is that one that Billy is doing, too! I love how it goes all the way up to your butt. Oh yeah!

Question – when does your Compression shorts contest end? I entered it and was looking around for who was the winner. :)

Reply

Janae September 12, 2011 at 3:02 pm

HEY MEREDITH!!! I did choose a winner and it was michele and jenny! BUMMER YOU DIDN’T WIN:( Next time I will rig it for you! Have an amazing Monday night!

I love stretching my legs and back. I feel like like I’m lengthing my muscles every time. I was reading my Runner’s World last night and they mentioned that Chocolate Milk is one of the best drinks after a workout. I will have to try that one.

Pigeon pose in yoga feels SO good for my hips! I think I could fall asleep just lying there and stretching.

Reply

Tiffany September 12, 2011 at 3:20 pm

I had a good 5k today on my lunch break. Good is a relative term for me because I am super slow, but 6 minutes slower outside than on the treadmill, so inside was good today.

… anyone else have that issue? I hate that I am so slow outside and 2 min faster on the treadmill :(

Anyway… so these amazing stretches you do… any reference point where I could find some of them online or in a book? My hubby and I need some help in that area.

ps. totally having choc milk for dinner tonight… the store bought kind, way better than the syrup, don’t hate… its true ;-)

Reply

Janae September 12, 2011 at 3:49 pm

GIRL!! You are so right about the store bought kind ha! About the treadmill they say that when using it to put the treadmill on a 1% incline to mimic what it is really like running outside. Is it hot outside? That could play a HUGE role in how well you perform. Keep up the amazing work, you are a rockstar. Here are some links to some great stretches for runners!

That stretch DOES feel awesome. Holy cow – he’s an awesome runner these days!!!!!!!!!!!! My workout today was a little 5 miler. I had some hills in there too. I’m going to admit that I took a few little breathers. I’ll just pretending I’m adjusting to the Denver altitude.

The piriformis stretch! Love that one, but I agree with Maren (which is my sister’s name too, weird!!) and I do it in sitting.

I’m watching Diners, Drive-ins and Dives right now, have you been to Pat’s in SLC? It looks delicious.

Kaelin September 12, 2011 at 5:15 pm

Yes! I love that stretch too!!! I hurt my piriformis thing this spring, and the chiropractor said “do this!”. And it worked!! Today I went on a nice long speedy walk with my dog this morning before work. Then after work I tried Jillian’s new “Killer Buns and Thighs” DVD. And then I chugged a glass of chocolate milk! It is what gets me through a tough workout. Soooo happy your run was pain free!! You have been a rockstar for being so patient coming back this time!!! Keep it up and you will be running pain free for a long time girl!

Brittany September 12, 2011 at 7:02 pm

Wow 11.6 mi run all uphill and that fast? He’s a beast!!
I did 2 miles of interval training on the treadmill with .50 at a steady pace.
I also did a full body weights workout and was my mom’s personal trainer for the night!

I do that stretch every day! Another good stretch is the Pigeon Pose, which basically stretches the same muscles (just google Yoga pigeon pose) :-)

I LOVE that stretch! It’s a good thing you don’t live with me because you’d get some good pictures of my crazy stretching positions. My favorite stretch is anything that gets my ITB or left hip flexor and perferably when someone else is stretching for me. I was able to get everything stretched out at the end of my tough hot yoga class this AM. Congrats on getting back into the runs!

Sarah September 22, 2011 at 5:31 pm

What I love even more than that stretch Billy is doing is doing it and rolling out my pyriformis. It hurts so good!
