I knew that the first thing you wanted to see this morning was Charlie’s beautiful smiling face.

I finally made it out of the house yesterday to take advantage of one of the last times that Billy and I can do our favorite free date……chillin’ at Borders, reading books and magazines.
I read an AWESOME article about hydration while running/training!! The article said that just a 2% loss in body weight (from sweat) during a workout can result in a 10% drop-off in endurance performance. Now it may not be likely that you would lose that much water weight during a normal workout but I think it can easily happen on a HOT day or during a long run or race! Drink up and get those electrolytes too!

PPS (I know there was never a PS before this but I just felt like writing 2 p’s) I really want to do a trail race/ultra-marathon……… anyone want to do one with me? I will pay you per hour in swedish fish.
Tonight’s dinner was brought to you by butter. The MIL served us garlic bread with BUTTER, chicken, peas and noodles with BUTTER. Not even exaggerating here, I don’t know if I will ever add sauce to my noodles again, a little butter is the new marinera in my mind.

Not the best picture ever, a rootbeer float for dessert…..does it get any more summery than that?

This was the look that Billy gave me when I told him on our evening walk that I was going to attempt to be at the gym at 6 a.m. this morning. We are going up to LA super early and of course I want to get my sweat on before we go.

——————————————————————-
Do you like butter…..what is your favorite thing to spread it on?
-Toasted raisin bread……top with a little cinnamon-sugar and I am in heaven:)
Have you ever run a trail-race or an ultra-marathon? Do you have a desire to?
-Yes, and not just because they offer pb sandwiches, gummy bears and chips ahoy at the aid stations.
Let’s talk about hydration…….what do you drink when you run or workout? How much do you drink? In races do you rely on the AID STATIONS or do you bring your own drinks?
-Water for now but back in the good ol’ days of long runs I drank CYTOMAX for any run over an hour (switching off with water). I always rely on the aid stations for water and gatorade…..one marathon I had Billy hand me my cytomax at a few different places.

Haha…Charlie is too cute! My friend has a dog that actually DOES smile when he first greets you, although it looks like he is bearing his teeth. I have NEVER seen a dog besides him that actually smiles. sooo bizarre!
I have been wanting to do a Ultra for a little while now!! You would totally be the best training partner!
I am really bad about hydrating during my training and long runs but I do refuel/hydrate well after my runs! I also rely on the aid stations during races!!
I am not a butter fan, so don’t really use it on anything.
I accidentally ran a half marathon tail race once, not knowing what I was getting myself into. I don’t think it was really tough but a lot more than I was expecting! haha
I am bad for not drinking enough but always bring my own water, for any race I use all 4 water bottles in my water/running belt.
No desire to run any of thos races before – BUT now that gummi bears are involved..hmm….
Love real butter – makes everything taste better – just a little goes a LONG way! p.s.are those canned peas you’re eating girl???? xoxo from Trinidad
Hi Charlie!! He’s such a cutie! I wish that he could meet my pup Mo, they have similar smiles!
Your dinner looks delish!
I did an off road half iron tri but that is the extent of my trail racing. I would love to do an ultra something at some point in my life!
On longer runs, or during long races, I like to walk through the water station before I start running again. It helps me make sure I get hydrated and also relieves tired legs!
I LOVE butter, but I use it sparingly, because I have trouble with restraint.
I’ve never done a trail race and don’t really want to. I’m super clumsy, so I’m pretty much guaranteed to hurt myself if I ran one. I always trip and fall when we hike.
I drink a ton during the day and after runs, but don’t drink much while I’m running. It upsets my stomach. I also, usually stick to water unless I’m really dehydrated.
It’s about 80 degrees when we start our runs at 5am. On our long run days, typically 7 miles on up, we put coolers on our route. So we can stop a few times for water. I always take advantage of water stops at races. I make it a rule to walk through them. A friend’s hubby collapsed this past weekend during a tri. He could have DIED. He wasn’t properly hydrated. Ended up in the hospital. hearing that, I am even more of a freak about staying hydrated.
Butter is amazing and perfect in every way
Charlie is so cute!
On one of mine and my hubby’s dates this summer I wanted to order noodles and butter off the children’s menu, and he said I should try ordering like an adult. Luckily I had a salmon dinner to die for, but guess what I made him for dinner the next night………and it was pure deliciousness.
Cinnamon Raisin Toast with butter = dessert last night.
Ultra- that would be pushing my comfort zone since I never did a marathon, but you are someone who could get me to consider it. What’s the quote, “Life begins where your comfort zone ends.”
Happy Day in LA with your main squeeze. Enjoy!
Bread and butter is a classic! yumm and yes! I am always carrying a water bottle with me and have a nathan water bottle to carry me through my runs
Mmmmmm buttered cinnamon raisin toast is the best!!! If you ever go to a Waffle House, order that. It’s heaven.
I am horrible at staying hydrated. I always put it off till an hour before a workout and then try to chug 3 bottles of water. It doesn’t work in case your were wondering. During races I always try to drink at the aid stations but I end up spilling water down my shirt and looking like a goof ball.
And I totally want to do an ultramarathon! Swedish fish are the best running fuel. I keep them in the freezer so they don’t melt as fast during runs.
Charlie is so cute!!
And of COURSE I like butter. It’s sooo good on noodles, but I love just plain old warm bread with butter too. Yum.
Do I like butter? Um … that would be a YES!
Warm crusty bread with soft, spreadable butter = love! And my MIL just made her famous “parsley potatoes” on Monday night that are full of butter and AMAZING!
I NEED to get my sweat on before trips or else I go CRAAaazzzy! Hah.
Love the idea of going to Borders to read….I do it all.the.time.
Ok so I haven’t done any real trail races but I did the Warrior Dash this weekend in Kansas City and that was totally a trail run plus all the obstacles. A guy who ran it actually passed away on Monday night because he had such extreme heat exhaustion and dehydration…it’s so sad.
It’s been so hot here lately and after one of my runs last week I actually lost 4lbs which was kind of crazy and I made sure to super hydrate that day.
It’s funny that you mention running ultras because that’s all I have been thinking about lately! I am just now training for my first full marathon but it will actually be 26.5 miles (part of the Route 66 mara in Tulsa which takes you to the Detour to the Center of the Universe aka the world’s shortest ultra, haha!) but after that my next goal is to do a 50k in 2012 and then continue until I do like a 100k or something!!!
I’m sure I have mentioned it before but it’s worth restating…
4 Essential Food Groups: Butter, Bacon, Cheese and Chocolate.
Am I right? Who’s with me???
I would love to do a trail race but since I am a newbie I think this would have to wait for me to accomplish some other stuff with my running first. Like maybe being able to walk within the first 3 weeks after doing a Half! Can you say try training better loser!
My favorite meal as a kid was butter noodles. I didn’t really like sauce so I would just put butter, a little milk and parmesean cheese on my elbow noodles. It’s the BEST
I like earth balance butter with cinnamon and sugar on toast!
I’m horrible at hydrating on runs. I don’t like to carry a water bottle so I usually plan my long runs through a park with a water fountain.
When I was little, I HATED marinara sauce, so I would always eat my spaghetti with butter and parmesan cheese. To this day, I still think it’s the best way to eat pasta
Do you start back teaching soon? The summer goes by way too fast!
I wasn’t a huge fan of marinara either! I used to put butter on my pasta and only a little tiny bit of marinara so I could still taste the butter.
I love butter on toast!
I run in parks often, and I am planning on signing up for a trail half marathon late this September. I can’t wait! It’s going to be a week after a RnR half, so I’m not counting on PRing or anything, I just want to have a fun trail half experience.
Normally, I only brought water with me on 9+ mile long runs. But when summer rolled around with its 80%+ humidity, I started bringing water with me anytime I’m gone longer than 45 minutes. I have a 20 oz handheld insulated Camelbak bottle that I love. For my nearly 13 mile run the other day, I drank all my water and a gu by mile 8 (it was HOT). I brought some cash to buy a bottle of gatorade along my route, and I drank that for the remainder of my run.
I have a container of gatorade mix at home, depending on my mood I bring just gatorade or I bring water and a gu (for longer runs). I really like Cytomax though! I had a sample packet from a previous race and the tropical flavor was good, I may try to find some…
I’ve read about doing a “sweat test” – weighing yourself before and after a run – to figure out how much fluid you should be consuming. Your HR is likely to go up as you get more dehydrated too (which may be part of that performance decline).
Yep, definitely agree with cinnamon-raisin bread and butter. I just had some this morning! I’d like to do a trail run some time; I’ve never done one before
As far as hydration goes, I always drink beforehand. For the bike, I have one bottle of water and one of some kind of sports drink or sports drink/water mix.
Love that first picture of Charlie, Love butter, and love you!
I do not think I quite have the desire to run further than marathon distance quite yet. But someday I would love to do an ultra. Let do it together k! I think we would have so much fun.
I used to be a little afraid of butter, but it’s actually so tasty and not that bad for you when used in moderation. My favorite thing to put it in is grits! Oh so good.
I am SUPER sad about Border’s shutting down too! That used to be our favorite free date place. Sad face
I don’t usually used much butter, but I do like butter and salt (garlic salt is also great) on my noodles. It is the easiest way to make noodles!
I really want to get into ultras. I’m hoping to do a 50k next February and work up to a 50 miler for next June. I better get focused on my first marathon before that though! Baby steps!
I haven’t tried anything but water so far for longer distances. For races I usually stop at the water stations and bring my own gels. And you definitely do have to be careful about not drinking enough water, especially in the heat. Lately for long runs I have been weighing myself before and after to see if I’m drinking enough. So far my research has shown I could use a lot more hydration. The problem is the more water you drink the more you have to carry with you!
I’m actually not a fan of butter! The only thing I like it on is toast. I’ve never been a fan of it on noodles. Guess I’ll have to stick to the marinara!
Charlie = Love!
Give me a piece of homemade french bread hot from the oven and slather on some butter. Yum!
I have done one ultra-marathon–a 50k race last year. I was registered for a 50miler back in April, but got injured and had to bail. Boo. I’d love to run one with you, but I’m really S.L.O.W.
I typically drink only water when I run. I get my e-lytes from Clif Shotblocks or something else. Sometimes I’ll mix Gatorade & water 50/50. Depends. I tried Hammer Sustained Energy while training for & racing the ultra. It wasn’t too bad either.
I wear a multi bottle fuel belt but also rely on aid stations as back-up.
Charlie is so dang cute!! I love how much all of you love and include him in your family activities. Lucky guy!
I’ve done one ultra – the Calico Ghosttown 50K. The vibe of a trail ultra is SO different than a marathon – very mellow and un-intense. I loved that part of it! I ran it with my husband and was so glad to have him because there were miles and miles where I was all alone and would have thought I was lost if it weren’t for him. My biggest disappointment, though, was NO MEDAL!! I got a leather (lame) keychain instead…I truly don’t think I would have done it if I had known there wasn’t going to be a medal!
Hi Janae! I read your blog pretty consistently, but have never left a comment…so here goes! In response to your question about ultra-running, I am far too much of a wuss to do such a thing, but my husband is just getting into it and (like everything else he does!) is pretty good. He did the Santa Barbara Endurance Race in April (about a week after we did Boston- and he got a 2:40!) He was doin great and I joined him at about mile 70. Around mile 80 things got really tough though- a lot of elevation gain & loss throughout the day and it started to get really cold. He had to drop out at mile 91 and he was in 2nd place! It took him a solid 2 weeks to recover fully, as his hips were all outta wack and his ankles were super-swolen. At the time, he said he would NEVER do it again, but I’m not so sure;) Anyhow, it is tough stuff and takes a certain breed, but I think you just might be crazy enough to do it! Keep up the good recovery and enjoy the last few weeks of summer- I’m a teacher too, so I can sympathize! Take care!
I could pretty much eat butter on anything. Browned butter is our favorite pasta sauce
. REALLY healthy, too. Ok, not so much. But SO good.
I will totally run a trail run or an ultra.. but well behind you, because I’m not that fast. No payment necessary!
I rely on aid stations during a race. I use a fuelbelt for long runs on my own. I also plan to run past my car halfway through to refill and refuel.
I love trail running! I run a trail half marathon every April and will be doing my first ultra on September 25th!! http://www.dwdhell.com/
Charlie is so darn cute!
I think a trail race/ ultra marathon would be fun- but I need to get through some races before I tackle that! lol.
Hope got your sweat on this morning
I as up at 6:20 doin the same thing
Have a great day!
Aww Charlies is so flippen adorable
I could never run an ultra, even with proper training I think my body would just start to fall apart half-way through the race haha
I almost spit out my cereal when I saw the way you like to enjoy butter… that is literally the exact combination I would choose!
I LOVE BUTTER!
Also, the one and only trail run I’ve done was so incredibly difficult because of all the hills. It took me an extra half hour than a normal race. The views were gorgeous! I prefer road races though.
OMG. Doing a trail race/ultra with you would be the best. thing. ever. Swedish fish would abound!
while training this spring/summer for a half marathon i’ve started to carry water or water/gatorade mix with me on any run over 5 miles and on really hot days. last weekend i did a 10-mile race and thought “i don’t want to carry that stupid bottle with me…they’ll be aid stations”. Unfortunately they only had water at the stations and it was SO hot I used most of the water to dump on my head while running. I was so dehydrated after the race, I won’t be going on a run without carrying my own water for awhile! I haven’t tried cytomax, but may give a try.
For two years now I have done a 15mile trail run and I love it! This year it rained the whole time and made it ever more fun!
If I lived in Utah, I would do a trail ultramarathon with you!
I did my first trail ultra last year and I became completely hooked! I used to be only a cement runner, now I run almost strictly trail.
guess what – guess what – guess what!!!!
I bought it ! The C900 and i think my life is about to become even better!
I can’t wait to give you a full report on my treadmill running. Thanks for the advice, btw.
I went to Border’s the other day and I found it horrible depressing. They had barricaded the coffee section off and there was no music playing and everything was in disarray! I have so many fond memories of borders! I used to go there as a kid and hang out for hours picking out books and then in college I’d hang out there with my best friend reading magazines and drinking coffee. No more Borders. It’s just so sad.
I LOVE trails and dirt! I’ve got a few on the calendar you should check out:
Hurricane Jem Trail Marathon in October (this trail is AMAZING).
Buffalo Run 50 or 100 miler in March next year in SLC.
I would accept payment in Sweedish Fish or Hostess donuts.
I love fresh bread w/ butter!!!
I usually just drink water on my normal workout days….
i’m loving that trail magazine. Mud and all. I’d love to do an ultra trail run some day. Can i join u?!!
<3
LOVE butter. ‘nough said.
I really want to do an ultra – looking at a 40miler nearby for next year…after finishing my first marathon I thought, hmm that wasn’t so bad, so prolly a good indicator that I can complete a 40!
I hydrate with plain old h20 on normal runs. Anything over 10 and I do G2 or Gatorade. The marathon had a different type of sports drink and my tummy did not like so I switched to water. Next time I will bring my own drink!
I did a trail 50K in December and it was AWESOME. So different from road racing, but a ton of fun. I can’t wait to do another one
I LOVE BUTTER!!
And after buying nothing but fat free I Can’t Believe its Not Btter for 2 years, the REAL thing tastes sooo much better. Moderation is the key and if its the real thing all you need is a little
I like spreading it on warm banana bread or pumkin bread.
Two word: Mmmmm, butter!
We’re running a trail half marathon in October (Bizz Johnson Express) to prepare for the North Face Endurance Challenge in San Francisco this December, wifey will be doing the trail marathon and I’m look towards the 50 K. So excited for my first real trail race.
P.S. What is the going rate in swedish fish per hour?
I rarely have real butter so when I do I am always shocked at how much I LOVE it. It’s the best on fresh baked bread from my breadmaker.
I just got a new huge awesome hydration vest! I used it this am and it’s so comfy. My basic plan is to just drink water every five seconds all day. I always have to pee on long runs, so I take that to mean I’m hydrated. I have a drinking problem.
After never having done any trail running, I’ve done two trail 50Ks this summer and I am addicted! They are the BEST! I would run one just for the food alone. So much more relaxed than marathons, and so much fun. I actually made a video and someone commented that for an ultra running event, he didn’t understand why all he saw was people eating and drinking? Not trying to plug my blog at all but if you are curious here’s the link. http://chocolateismylife-us.blogspot.com/2011/07/behind-scenes-50k-video.html
I would totally do one with you if you want to come to the MD/DC/VA area! We have a guest room and I will even get fancy and move the bikes out of it for you!
#1. Ultras terrify me.
#2. I love butter! Butter on saltines is to die for and absolutely atrocious for one’s waist line.
I have never run a trail race but I want to so badly. Living in NY it’s just cental park this, cental park that. I want to climb hills and crap!
I like butter spray. I know, it’s gross, but I think it’s delicious! I like to put it on bread, bagels and even in oatmeal, YUM!
Never had the desire to run an ultra. It freaks me out. But I’d run a couple miles in one with you
I’ve done 2 trail 50Ks and I’m doing a trail 50 miler in November. You should come along for the race.
that is the cutest picture of charlie ever. like really though. that should be on the cover of greeting cards!
I WANT TO DO A TRAIL RACE SO SO BADLY TOO!!!! lets do it
ps rootbeer floats are the BESTTTTT
have fun in LA!!
The best thing with butter is pumpkin bread!!! I’m not sure if I could do a trail run or ultramarathon? I am in the beginning stages of a marathon and I’m still wrapping my mind around that. I bring water for short runs and water and gatorade for long runs. I rely solely on aid station during races, that is one of the great things about races!
I know I should hydrate better during workouts but drinking a lot of water actually gives me tummy aches.
Hydration makes 100% difference for me. If I don’t hydrate before running/yoga I feel like POO!
Hydration is definitely key for workouts even though I SUCK at it, but I definitely notice a difference. When I was training for the marathon and not just working out casually like I do now, hydration was key for me. I would plan my long runs where there were gas stations so I could fill up my water bottle!
I picture running a marathon with you as being one of the most amusing things I could ever do in my life – especially if you’re paying in swedish fish – SO COUNT ME IN!
Charlie’s adorable – does he need a girlfriend? I’ve got a cute puppy
Im a big advocate for hydration. I have been ever since I learned that proper hydration is a good way to avoid urinary tract infections (gross, I know) when I was 19. During the day during the week I drink water, water, water, all day long. When I run long I fill 2 fuel belt bottles with powerade and 2 with water. If the run is super long (like 18 or 20) I plan it to loop back to my house or car where I can refill at the halfway point. And during races, I always rely on the aid stations for beverages, but bring my own fuel just in case.
Now, I need someone to tell me about Cytomax. I’ve never had it!
Aww when we were kids Amy and I would only eat noodles with butter. Sometimes I would add parmesan cheese but it would make it harder to slurp spaghetti noodles. The shape of the noodle is a very important consideration in the cheese department, haha!
I have a LOVE affair with butter! I used to live in Maine where you can buy raw dairy and used to buy the most insanely delicious raw butter from a local farm Incredible stuff. I love butter on warmed, not toasted plain whole wheat bagels… then drizzled with honey. Pure hedonistic bliss. garlic, butter, parm and pasta is so simple but so good too.
I’m training for my first HALF marathon now so I have yet to even think of an Ultra marathon. Hopefully one day!
I have to say I’m pretty bad about staying properly hydrated on long runs. in fact I don’t drink enough water in general. My normal run after work is 4 miles and I just drink a bunch of smart water (electrolytes yay!) before and after. What should I do during much longer runs??? I know there are special water things you can wear haha but they look uncomfortable?? Clearly, I’m a novice haha but I love running and want to get better!
Adorable picture of Charlie – you are definitely going to have to get a puppy once you get back home! Or just take Charlie with you
I do love butter, but I rarely eat it. I love it on some good crusty bread, and also in mashed potatoes!
I want to do the Warrior Dash! I think I may sign up for the one in TN this fall. I’m excited!
i would love to do a trail run, but as for an ultra-marathon…I’d have to do a regular marathon first
I think I am pretty good at hydrating. for a run longer than an hour, I wear my hydration belt with the big bottle full of water and the little 5oz bottle with some kind of electrolyte drink. I use aid stations for sure. A local running store actually puts up free aid stations around a popular running lake every Saturday to make sure that everyone is safe and hydrated.
A trail race would be SO FUN!! do it!! you wouldn’t want to do it with me though, I’m really klutzy and I’d trip on like every single root. I think you should make that your next goal after a sub-2 marathon!
I had someone comment on my blog when I did P.S and and PPS (or some people do PSS)…anyways….she said she write PS2…I like it…It stuck…
what about a little 2P.S. !?!?
THAT IS BRILLIANT…I will be doing that from now on:)
Love the pic of Charlie haha! I love to cook and bake with butter! cookies and cake without butter?! no way
I love butter on rice or egg noodles! A little butter makes veggies that much better too.
I love doing trail runs, but not sure about an ultra.
I’m a big fan of Hammer nutrition products for training, but during a race I take whatever is out there. I am too lazy to carry my own.
I finally was able to experience a Trader Joes. I only bought one thing but love it. It was Trader Joes crunchy PB w/flax seed. Yum!
I am running my first trail half marathon the end of August! I would do an ultra if it didn’t require so much time training for it. If I could keep to the schedule I run now with like a three hour run on Saturdays and then be able to run an ultra, I would jump at the chance. I would LOVE to run trails with you, I think it would make the time fly. I run with my hubby but he gets embarrassed when I make airplane noises on the downhills (complete with the outstretched arms) ya gotta make it fun!
AIRPLANE NOISES WITH THE ARMS…..we have to run together, that image of you doing that made my day!
Doesn’t everyone like butter?! Butter is practically a food group.
I AM THE BUTTER QUEEN OF THE UNIVERSE. In my house, it goes on anything and everything.
Margarine is for fools and I pity anyone who thinks it’s the healthier, better option. Give me the real stuff and no one gets hurt.
I want to do the wasatch 100. I think once you do this you receive the title of ultimte hard core! Not only is it a trail race but it is 100 MILES! Over some of the most beautiful mountain trails in utah. DO IT. If you do it I will do it.
Racing with you would be awesome.
I love going out on the trails to run. Lately it has been too hot. It begins to feel like a sauna in there. I hope a trail race will be in my future.
Janae!! I never used to be able to comment from work (which is where I read blogs the most) and today I can!!
I am starting training for my 2nd half marathon now-ish…and hope to do a Full sometime this winter/next spring (I live in Texas, we don’t race in the summer, we race fall – spring!)
Hydration is MEGA important here because it’s still over 100* at 10pm! I always have my camelbak with me, I refill it ALL the time, but I’m kinda bad about drinking while I run. My handheld is tiny and most of the places I run don’t have water fountains so there’s no where to fill up. It stinks! I didn’t carry a bottle during my Half, I used the aid stations (a great excuse to take a walk break) but carried my own GU chomps/gels! I drink lots of gatorade even when I’m not running (we buy the powder, and I switch off about every 3rd bottle is gatorade!)
LOVE LOVE LOVE reading your blog! And totally wish I could eat like you and not be a cow! Unfortunately I have to watch what I eat but I live vicariously through you!!
I think you should run the Bulldog Ultra Trailrace up in malibu (there’s a 25k and a 50k). Two birds with one stone!!
