I love food with a side of family

I am teaching my niece and nephew very important life lessons.

IMG 6445

How to turn a pretzel into a nose ring.  They will be the cool kids when they show off this trick at lunch.  In case you were wondering, I was the kid that got made fun of in elementary school because I was so weird.

IMG 6463

I know that my spelling and grammar errors probably irritate a few readers but I can blame it on my father.  Just take a look at his grocery list. At least he spells things the way they truly sound like.

We made dinner (okay, Billy made dinner) at the parentals and we had some bbq chicken, corn and mashed potatoes.  Really I think I could live off of this meal and be a happy camper forever.

IMG 6466

As we were eating, I looked around at everyone else’s corn—-> nice organized rows of chomping.

Mine—–> Disorganized.  I start on the outsides and leave the middles for last (the part with the most butter).

IMG 6469

After our feast I whipped out my homemaker skills and made ice cream (in case you were wondering this was my second helping of the day and who knows, besides Billy, whether or not I got up in the middle of the night for my 3rd helping).

IMG 6470

4 ingredients:  3/4 C. Sugar, 2 C Heavy Whipping Cream, 1 C Milk, 2 tsp. Vanilla,

IMG 6472

and of course a whole package of oreos.  It would just be wrong without that minor detail.   I think I might create spoons made out of oreos so that each bite of ice cream you could have a huge chunk of oreo (I would have to use at least 4 spoons per bowl).

IMG 6474

To go along with the title I just wanted to say I really love food.  I love the planning, the preparation (especially when Bdawg and I do it together) and I love the eating with your hubby/family/friends/random people and talking part.  I don’t really know where I am going with this but in case you didn’t know it before…..I love food.  Thank you for your time.

Don’t forget to check out the DIDN’T CUT IT and TRAINING PAGES!!!

————————————————————————

If you were making homemade ice cream right this second, what topping would you put in (cost and calories do not apply)?

-Butterfinger…..I have been having strange cravings for butterfinger crumbles.

What is your workout today?

-Going to listen to the doctor and take my 2nd CARDIO rest day of the week and just do a powerpump class….although I don’t know if my buns will allow one more squat.

This week has been busy and I haven’t had a chance to write any super interesting posts besides my normal ‘let’s see how many times Janae can eat ice cream and hang out with her family’ posts.  I only work one day next week so I will be back to blogging 23 hours a day and wanted to know if there are there any topics that you want to see discussed?  Let me know in the comments what YOU want to see:)

I love food and family too! It’s a good combination! I wish I liked to cook more. I do it out of necessity and not so much out of a love of it.
You are doing so good on following doctor’s orders. It’s really gonna pay off in the end. You are such an inspiration to me and are my hero!

I cannot wait for fro-yo with you!! We are going to party. I am also SO SO EXCITED to cheer YOU ON!!! LOVE YOU!

Reply

I love food too :-) How could we not? Imagine a life with no food. It would be so boring!!

If I could make any flavor of ice cream, I think I’d go with vanilla, mixed with chocolate, peanutbutter, pretzels and cookie dough bits. I’d call it Sweet n’ Salty ;-)

Reply

It hurt my head when I thought about life with no food. Um, can we go into business and open an ice cream shop with the sweet n’ salty?!?!

Reply

If you do this, I will so be there every day. That sounds delicious!

Reply

You might be my new favorite blogger! You make me happy inside! haha, dont take the wrong way!! You and billster are just so flipping cute!!!!

Yay for California!!! Get ready for some (and by some I mean copious amounts) of fro yo, cupcakes, amazing restaurants, the beach, and REPEAT!

There’s nothing better than eating AND doing it with the fam! My mom, sisters, and I take every chance we can to get together and do those things! Your ice cream looks divine. What could be better than homemade ice cream? Mmmmm!

Reply

Seriously….nothing better than eating with the mom and sister (especially if sugar is involved)!! We sound A LOT ALIKE!

Reply

oh don’t worry we will never get tired of reading how much you love ice cream or food in general. :) that said, okay, when i first looked at the picture of you with the pretzels and didn’t read the captions, i saw your hands and thought you were flashing some sort of funny gang sign. haha. we’ll call u the preztel gangsta’. jk.

down to business, any kind of ice cream addition, i’d throw in chunks of cookie dough, brownies, and why not add some three musketeers bar too. good job on sticking to the doc’s orders and enjoy that powerpump class!

Reply

It is our GANG SIGN HA!! I love you so much! Cookie dough chunks and a 3 muskateers….you are BRILLIANT!! Hope you are having the best day ever!

Reply

Food & family are 2 of my most favorite things :)

Your dad’s shopping list could have been my dad’s! Similar handwriting, things spelled very wrong (but at least he buys the right things!)

I would make nutella ice cream with peanut butter cup chunks in it! I had it at this ice cream shop once and I’ve been dying to recreate it successfully.

Reply

NUTELLA ICE CREAM with pb cup chunks….you are officially my best friend, that sounds AMAZING!!! I love how alike our dads are! You are the BEST!

Hi Janae! I started reading your blog not to long ago thanks to a recommendation from Julie’s website (pbfingers). Anyway, I have recently just gotten back into going to the gym after about 3-4 months off because I was studying for the bar exam and I was wondering if you had any suggestions for motivation. I’ve found that since I took that time off I have a really hard time making myself go to the gym and get a decent workout in. I love to swim but there isn’t a pool at my gym and I can’t afford the $100 a month that it costs to belong to the gym nearby that does have a pool. So I’ve been alternating running (well jogging really) with incline walking on the treadmill but it isn’t that interesting to me. I had knee surgery about 5 years ago so I have to take it every easy with any type of running because of the pounding on my knee. Anyway, I think you probably already did a post on this but it was just something I’ve been thinking about. Thanks for blogging, I love reading your thoughts each day….oh and I have one more episode of Make it or Break it to finish before I’m done with the second season, can’t wait to watch it!

Reply

YAY TO GETTING BACK TO THE GYM!!! 100 bucks a month for a gym?!? That is out of control!! Knee surgery…ouch, yeah you probably want to steer clear of too much running! Have you tried a spin class at your gym. I love group exercise classes because they motivate me SO SO much. I can’t stop or be wimpy when I am in a class with other people! I love PUMP (lifting classes) too because they make me feel STRONG and weight training is incredibly good for you! I try to make friends in different classes too so that I am excited to go to the class not only to workout but also to see friends! I hope this helps….if you send me your email we can talk more about it:)

Reply

haha, I love food too. :) I looooooove Oreo ice cream! I get “extra oreos” when I get a blizzard at Dairy Queen and they STILL don’t put enough oreos in there!!

Reply

Extra oreos….that is brilliant. I have noticed that DQ goes cheap on the oreos too! Maybe I will just bring my pack with me to add to it:)

Reply

I always love to add in cookie dough to my ice cream, yours looks great! My workout today consisted of a 2 mile run, 20 minutes on the elliptical, and 10 minute cycle. My legs are KILLING me from an Insanity workout I did earlier this week. Talk about an edorphine high, it is hard core!

Reply

INSANITY….I lasted for one workout with that, you are my HERO!! YAY for an endorphin high…..those are the best things in the world. KILLER WORKOUT!!!

Reply

I LOVE reading your blog everymorning. I read it before I even check my own e-mail! haha. I love hearing about your training and eating because I want to become a runner. I’ve tried several times, but I’m planning on really sticking to it this time. I just ran 3.25 miles this morning :D

I also have just a general question about workouts- are you always sore after your workouts? Running is killer on my hips and legs, but when I lift weights- I’m typically never sore the day after! (or at all for that matter). I lift 15 lbs (maybe 20 if I’m feelin ambitious), and try to do high reps…but no soreness. Does this mean I’m not working hard enough? Any thoughts?

Have an awesome day!! :)

Reply

AHHH YOUR COMMENT MADE MY DAY!! Thank you so so much. YOU ARE A RUNNER…girl, 3.25 miles is AWESOME!!!
About being sore….my calves are sore after runs and after I lift in a pump class I am ALWAYS sore. When I lift on my own I do not get sore, probably because I do the same thing over and over again. A pump class challenges me to do more reps and different things! I hope this helps. PS 20 lbs….you are MY HERO and maybe you are too buff to get sore anymore!

Reply

Oh my husband would love me so much if I made that Oreo ice-cream! Looks fabulous! I love vanilla bean homemade ice-cream with raspberries! Oh it’s my favorite!

My dad is a horrible speller as well! I love it… They sound out how the word sounds and figure that’s how you spell it! Funny stuff!

I had no idea you were moving! When and where? Sad, we need a fro yo date so soon!

Love ya

Reply

LOVE YOU!! We are going to Cali for two weeks wahoo! We are doing fro-yo tomorrow at five for the peeps running Utah Valley Marathon!!

Reply

iced animal crackers and whipped cream. no question! ;-)

today I am going to do a bikram yoga session after work. … so i can eat more icecream ha!

Reply

ANIMAL CRACKERS…you are my hero. AMAZING!!! I need to try bikram, how often do you do it? I need more details!

Reply

And Janae,
I would love to hear more about your swimming workouts. How long do you swim and do you time yourself? Do you swim freestyle predominantly?

With summer approaching, I was thinking about adding some swimming to my workouts…

Reply

AWESOME IDEAS!! Thank you so much! Yay for more swimming…it is SO so good for you!
I do freestyle for most of the time and I usually swim anywhere from 30 minutes to 70 minutes. I use my music (underwater ipod gear) to include intervals of going faster when the chorus comes on my ipod. I also add in the ‘toys’ like paddles on my hands or that thingee (wow, I am smart) that you put in between your legs. Hope this helps gorgeous girl!

Reply

Your ice cream looks super good. For me, any Ice cream topping-cookie dough…and brownie. I LOVE Ben and Jerry’s half baked!–Bonus, they make it in FroYo!!
Your dad gets points for a legible shopping list. Noone ever knows what my dad writes
My workout will be five miles, once I get my bootay to the gym!

Reply

I forgot about half-baked…..I ate SO much of that stuff in college, it is my FAVORITE!!! Good luck on the five miles, you can do it and you are AMAZING!

Reply

New reader here and I’m loving your blog! Can you tell me where to look to find out what happended to your femurs? I’m scrolling through tons of posts and it’s just not working! Or just give me a quick recap. Thanks so much!

Reply

HI LAURA!! I am SO so happy that you are liking the blog. The femurs…..I was training for the Boston Marathon and in February I had severe pain in my legs. The doctors said it was a muscle tear and so I kept running on it and it hurt bad. I had xrays a week before Boston and found out that I had a femoral stress fracture, a few weeks later I found out I had a stress fracture in my other leg too!! CRAZY!! I am now getting back into running slowly but surely. Thank you so much for commenting and let me know if you have ANY other questions. Have an amazing day!

Reply

Hi Janae!
I just want to let you know that your blog looks a little funky to me right now! I think it’s because i’m using firefox? This happened yesterday too, and then it was fixed. Just wanted to let you know! :)
p.s. that ice cream looks to die for! YES PLEASE!

Reply

OH NO!!! Thank you so much Kristine for letting me know. I just texted my technician (aka billy) and he is going to work on it. THANK YOU!!! Changing hosts is a PAIN!

Reply

Is it still looking funky?

Reply

nope! It’s better now!

Reply

The restaurant I worked at in college made homemade butterfinger ice cream and it was AMAZINGGGGGG. Now though I am OBSESSED with Heath Bar ice cream :)

Reply

HEATH BAR ICE CREAM!?!? I NEED THAT NOW!! I would be 1200 lbs if I worked somewhere with homemade butterfinger ice cream!!

Reply

I love oreos in my ice cream!! Your’s looks amazing. I actually just blogged about my sonic double stuffed oreo blast that I had last night. You should probably try it if you haven’t already. So good!

Reply

I NEED the sonic double stuffed oreo blast right now…I might make my drivers ed kids drive me there ha. I am on my way to your blog right now so that I can read all about it!

Reply

Mmmm.. Oreos and ice cream. Would you believe I just had that combination for the first time THIS YEAR? Seriously, what have I been eating my whole life?

Janae… we need more rehab details… what’s your long term plan? When can you start running normal distances?

I have to live vicariously through you because my rehab is going so sloooooooowly.

Reply

I love your dads shopping list! That gave me a smile….. That ice cream looks dangerous, I am so happy I was not invited to family dinner!

Reply

That ice cream looks amazing!! I need an ice cream maker so bad!!

Reply

Want butterfinger ice cream? Can you get Blue Bell ice cream? If so, drive quickly and get their Butter Crunch ice cream. It’s love in a bucket!

Reply

Peanut butter! haha, which is my answer for everything! I want a ice cream maker too!

My workout this morning was 45 minutes on the ellipitcal which left me a sweaty mess :)

I always love reading your blog – gives me a good laugh everytime!

Reply

What kind of ice cream maker were you using? I’ve had really bad luck with them, but that one looks like it makes some good stuff.

Reply

HAHAHAHAHAHAH Please, please keep posting about how much ice cream you eat!!! This was hilarious. I’m surprised the keyboard still works because I spit out my water when I saw the pretzel picture with your niece and nephew. You are a role model.
And the spelling/grammar… made me pee my pants.
So yes… liquid coming out of both ends here.
If I were to have ice cream right now, I’d throw in some Skor bars. Yes, barS.
Workout today: still nursing the knee, so just elliptical for cardio (ughhh), and then a circuit workout including bicep curls, tricep overhead extensions, decline sit-ups and obliques, and full chin ups (I can do 2!)! I may break out the TRX later before I hit up NKOTBSB!!!!!!!!!
Thanks again for another hilarious and amazing post! xo

Reply

that ice cream looks awesome! If I was making my own right now, I think I’d throw in oreos AND reeces cups and maybe cookie dough. Whoa, that sounds amazing!

Reply

Ice cream is my weakness!!! I’m a rocky road kinda gal so I would through in lots of nuts and marshmallows! Yummy!!!

Eating with family and friends is the boom diggity!!

Reply

I love that you love food! In a world where everyone seems to be on a diet, it’s so refreshing to come across a gorgeous girl who doesn’t get by on rice cakes and egg whites. Please never stop being you <3

And you've got me craving some serious Oreo action… so that and cherrie would be my ice cream topping of choice.

Reply

Argh! that auto spelling! “BOMB diggity.” The first time it said bum diggity….should have left it, since sitting on your bum eating sugar is the greatest thing ever!

Reply

How about a daily routine post?! Like hourly with pictures or something?!
I’d add heath bars into my homemade ice cream! Or a warm brownie and sprinkles

Today’s workout will be rollerblading around the lake and then stopping at the gym to pump some iron!

Reply

I love food too, clearly I blog about it all the time! I am about to head out for a 5 miler with my friend Whitney and its SUNNY in Portland, shocking I know.

I would love it if you wrote about getting faster! How did you get so fast (when you were not so injured a while ago I mean) and did you do internal training?

PS. Is that an actual ice cream maker? I regret that day I sold mine at my garage sale for $1. I bought it at another garage sale for $2, but still, I should have kept it.

Reply

Yay love corn and potatoes!

I am a very organized corn eater, for some reason, I like to make sure I eat every single little piece haha.

And by the way, the plate has a gorgeous view :)

Reply

That homemade ice cream looks to die for! You can’t forget the oreos!

Reply

Your family is too adorable and I ate Icecream twice yesterday too! :) Me and my sister had an in depth conversation about how icecream is healing. Yes, yes, yes it is! Favorite topping is caramel.

This is seriously going to sound stupid (don’t judge) but I would love a guest post from hungry runner sister on how to get away with washing your hair minimally while working out. ha ha I know you are already laughing but seriously I wash my hair 7 days a week and I know it is bad for it. I tried today since I am tapering and only ran 2 miles to not wash it and it is driving me crazy!!

Oh and she could go ahead and teach us about being absolutely gorgeous as well. :)

Reply

wooah that ice cream looks incredible! I may need to invest in an ice cream maker. Could be dangerous though…

Reply

My ice cream would have a sweet vanilla cream base with whole cinnamon buns mixed in.

I’m going for a run with a friend tonight! :)

Reply

If I made ice cream right now it would have to somehow incorporate cinnamon and sugar. I can’t get enough Cinnamon Chex right now but let’s be honest, I don’t care about the plain cereal. Just the sweet toppings!

Workout for today will (hopefully!) be a 6 mile run!
:)

Reply

Okay is your comment about eating a 3rd helping in the middle of the night serious? Sometimes I bake something or whatever and wake up to pee at like 3am and just take a quick detour to the kitchen for a bite…orrrr sometimes I just do it with peanut butter/whatevers around. If you weren’t serious, I now know that clearly my love for sweets has gone too far.

Reply

What a brilliant idea: an edible Oreo cookie spoon!! Your seriously need to patent that!!

We used the same things you stab into your ears of corn to create little handles when I was growing up! (I have no idea what to call them!)

Reply

Could you write a post about running injuries and how to overcome them? I have been suffering with a running injury since the beginning of March, and most of the suffering has been from being bummed that I cannot run.

Reply

if i could make ice cream right now, i’d make it with heath bar!! they have crushed heath bar as a topping at the froyo place by me and i swear it’s the best!

for my workout today, i got up before work this morning and ran 3 miles plus i’m also going to spin class in a little while!

btw, i’m totally jealous that you’re already on summer break. i’m a teacher too but here in nj we don’t get out til the end of june. i’m counting down – 8 more school days!!!

Reply

My ice cream would be ANY combo that involved chocolate and peanut butter! That’s my weakness. Chocolate hazelnut is also DELISH! I have a choc hazelnut gelato recipe that I will share with you sometime, soooo good!

My workout is running on the treadmill doing Stage 5 of “Run Your Butt Off.” 2:30 walk, 5 min run. repeat 3 more times. end with 3 min walk. I usually run for a while after the segment is over. Then some strength training, with a little yoga stretching! It’s beautiful weather, I may hit up the trails!

I’m working on writing about meal planning — like picking a day of the week then planning the following weeks meals out. I know it works for me, but I’m curious if you have any insight on it, that would be interesting! Also, I despise my arms, everything else I am completely at peace with… the arms, though, ugh. Do you have any tips for zeroing in on “trouble spots?”

Reply

Haha. I must live in Utah. Last Sunday, we had corn.. and bbq chicken.. and ice cream in my exact same ice cream maker with that same recipe (except add 2 eggs).

The best part about this post is that my family had an in depth discussion about how neat and nice my SIL eats her corn and how Marshall’s was all over the place.

I love you.

Reply

I’d definitely put Reeses in my ice cream!!!! :D

Reply

Cookies and Cream is my favorite ice cream!! This post speaks to my heart…or my stomach… I don’t know! heheh LOVE IT either way!

Reply

So hard to narrow the choices for ice cream so mill give my top 3: praline pecans, Heath bars & caramel!
I’d like to hear more about your summer plans since u mentioned coming to Cali :). I’ve got all the yogurt lands mapped out 4u!

Reply

I hope you are not kidding about sneaking a spoonful of ice cream in the middle of the night because it beings me to my ? Have you ever eaten in the middle of the night to fuel your long run? I like to just be up and out the door, and contemplated trying this as a way to fuel but also be properly digested.

Your food pictures always get me out of my food ruts. Thanks. You got me into Rocky Road ice cream a couple of months ago, and I think I might have to do cookies and cream tonight.

I do like to put fresh fruit on top of ice cream so my next cheap date for you and Billy is to go and pick strawberries together, and then come home and make strawberry ice cream……one bowl, 2 spoons. :)

Reply

Your ice cream looks perfect!
We made homemade ice cream this week too. My mom sent us an ice cream maker as a gift last week so we tested it out by making peanut butter cup ice cream. Yum. I’m thinking either coffee or mocha chip will be next. : )

Reply

uuuhhh, another reason why you’re my hero… you make your own ice cream. WHY have I not done that before?

I also had some butterfinger in my froyo on monday. wiiin!

Reply

oooh, ooh. topic for you. what can you NOT do when running?

for example.. I can’t not have a strong/thick ponytail holder and headband. and I used to be able to not chew gum, but now I can. i know you’re a rockstar, but what can you not be without/can’t do when you run? :)

Reply

I would do cookie dough, butterfinger, and either cake pieces or oreo. Plus caramel sauce on top. This is dairy free imagining, right?

Reply

I would go for a cappacino, peanut butter cup ice cream! My two favorite things: coffee flavor and Reeses!

Reply

Yummy ice cream! Bravo. That looks amayyyzzziiinnng. And I’m liking the new site layout. Very cute.

Reply

mmmm homemade ice cream!!

Reply

Hey Janae! When you get a chance can you tell me what apps you recommend on the ipad2 if you get a chance. Alex gets a free ipad2 from work and since he already has one….it’s mine! I was hoping for some ideas since you LOVE yours.

Reply

I just happened upon your blog the other day (looking for inspiration to get back to training (triathlon) after 9 months of illness!). I also am addicted to ice cream and just made cookies and cream last night. Now I need my heaping bowl of salad so I can justify the ice cream I’m planning on eating! I love your energy and wish I could train with you – or keep up with you!

Reply

Hi Janae! I’ve been reading your blog for a while and thought it was time I finally commented! I look forward to reading your blog everyday and am very excited for you to be running again! I also suffered an injury recently and am just getting back to running and *trying* to take it slooooow.

As for the ice cream….oreo, cookie dough, brownie, coffee ice cream. Yep, I think I just described my heaven :)

Reply

Hey Janae,
As for topics don’t change a thing! I love to read your blog and feel motivated(oh ya and email you about self tanner). I am trying hard to get back into running. After the past few months it is starting to feel good again. This weekend I am running the Utah Valley Half and next weekend the Ragnar. (I am on Amylee’s team (runmygutsout), thats how I found your blog). Any advice for building endurance and adding distance?
Thanks Janae!

Reply

Ahhhhhh I love you!!!! Can you come to yogurtland at five tomorrow!!! Bunch of girls are running it and we are all getting together!!! I would love to meet you!

Reply

I just might have to stop by!

Reply

Janae!!!!

Can you do a post about self-esteem and overcoming “not being good” enough type feelings? If you have ever gone through anything like that.. I’m going through a bad breakup and I don’t know who I am anymore and need some advice!!!

And could Billy do a post about the technical side of blogging and resources he has used to set up your awesome, super fun, new blog? I’d love to know how he learnt all of his mad skilz.

THANKS JANAE!!! YOU RULE!
