I got home from school and put on my sexy spandex and Walmart Hanes T-shirt (with at least 42 food stains on it) and went over to BYU’s track.

Don’t worry I had four fists full of swedish fish on the way out.  Best pre-run fuel ever…Glycogen is glycogen in my book:)

Billy dropped me off (I had my running journal, water, phone and half of my closet with me so I didn’t want to have to run with all of that to get to the track).

After I did my first half of my workout……….a girl that I have stalked since I started running came up and said, “You are really good, what are you training for?”

I said, “Um, you are Mary Ann and I have researched all of your running times and PR’s because you are a rockstar and you win a lot of the races in Utah.  I am not creepy but you are my hero.”

We talked for a minute and then she asked to join me on my workout.  YES PLEASE!!!  Not going to lie….I was NERVOUS.  Once again it made me realize how much I LOVE running with other people.  There is nothing like knowing the person next to you feels like death too:)  Isn’t she pretty!!!

IMG_4471.jpg

800 meter repeats with an average of 3:02.   She definitely pushed me….thanks, girl!!!

I wanted to puke and my legs were shaking like crazy but I honestly loved every second (that is a lie, there were a lot of seconds I didn’t love but the majority of the time I was soaking it all in).  This workout was a HUGE morale booster because I remembered how much I love running and I saw strength in me that I haven’t for a little while.

If you are in Utah, check Mary Ann’s website out……it is the best resource for Utah racing, nutrition and inspiration!

Billy did the last four repeats with us….HE IS A ROCKSTAR.

He also picked up some awesome recovery food for me at Costco and had it waiting in the car for me. He wins again.  Yes, that is sponge bob gogurt and whoever thought of putting yogurt in a tube like that deserves an award.  I look cold, that is because I was.

IMG_4474.JPGIt is SO important to refuel with a 4:1 carb protein mixture within 15 minutes of a run and then even more within an hour (I had chocolate milk with glutamine).

Dinner was awesomesauce.  Whenever we go to family dinners (like last night) we end up leaving with arm fulls of food (thanks Aunt Laura).  This is how we are able to go to Costco once a week and only spend $20-$30.  Maybe we need to stick around by family for law school unless any of you are willing to give us groceries each week:)

Running Gear>spending money on food. Just to clear things up Candy>Running Gear.

IMG_4480.JPG

We had egg sandwiches with avocado and mozzarella with a side of roasted broccoli and spinach with Asian dressing on top.  Egg sandwiches are meant to be eaten for 40% of your dinners, just sayin.

What is your all time FAVORITE salad dressing (no thinking about calories okay)?

-Nothing beats a good caeser salad dressing…..add in the croutons and cheese and I am in heaven.

How often do you to track workouts?

-This was my first one ever (I am embarrassed to say that) but I LOVED it. It was crazy hard and I am going to be one sore teacher tomorrow.  On my sore days I just wheel around in my desk chair all day.  My students find it quite entertaining.

What is your workout today?

-I am meeting with Mary Ann after school for a recovery run on a trail:)

Do you ever eat white bread?

-I use to never go near the stuff but guess what……I like it and you betcha I am going to eat it when it is free from my aunt:)  Buying it…..that is another story!

Okay, I am going to age myself with this question, but where is the outdoor track at the Y? Do they not have the indoor track at the Fieldhouse anymore?

My Fav salad dressing is a peppercorn ranch, but I rarely eat it, it is only good with cerain things- I LOVE fruitty vinegarettes for my salads mostly.

I do a track workout once a week, and have been for about a year, it has been SO helpful and definitely makes you faster and stronger, the mental boost is just icing on the cake!

5M Tempo today- I LOVE tempos, super excited!

I can't believe you got to run with your local running celebrity, I worship ours as creepy as that sounds, and I could never keep up with her if I wanted to!

Oh my goodness, is this where you live!? Utah is so beautiful!!!

Your workout sounds nuts! Way to be! I don't ever really do track workouts. I ran track in HS and that's pretty much enough for me!

My workout today will hopefully be a million awesome miles on my new treadmill that comes today!!

The only time I really eat white bread is when it's like french or chibatta with dinner. For sandwiches and toast I stick to multigrain.

How fun to meet an idol! I only wish Kara Goucher would have wanted to run with me when I met her in Chicago :/

What a place to do a track workout! When I was hanging out at the track, I was at a nearby middle school and it was the least scenic, least inspiring place ever.

Favorite salad dressing: RANCH. I refuse to give it up – I just eat it in smaller portions or mix it with salsa (which, btw, is super yum).

And Billy should go to law school at Notre Dame!

Reply

So cool to meet your idol :-)
Even cooler to workout with her!

I like Ranch best on salads, but love blue cheese on my burgers!

I've done a few track w/os. They rock! We start our first team track w/os next Wednesday.

I have a swim on the schedule today.

I love sourdough bread for sandwiches and I love white wonder bread for my egg salad or fried egg sandwiches! YUM!

Reply

I completely agree with you that running with someone is so much better! I need to find more running buddies and actually spoke to a local club at my half marathon on Sunday and am thinking of joining :)

Ken's Lite caeser, all the way! OR blue cheese if I feel like being a fatty!

My plan is to start track workouts in March!

Today is a short tempo run on the treadmill, boo! Bring on spring!

I don't eat white bread as much any more, unless I'm at someone's house and it's all they have. But grew up on it so I like it. I tend to eat pitas and wraps more now.

Reply

3:02 you are a Rock Star! Mine are a measly 3:30. I used to run them every week but currently I alternate them with tempo runs. We'll see how it goes, then I'd like to hook up with your guy.

Today I'm running 8 miles

I try hard not to eat white bread :)

I'm so excited for you – getting sponsored by a running store, getting a running coach, and now finding a running buddy! I think 2011 is going to be an amazing year for you!!!

Favorite salad dressing = olive oil, finely chopped garlic, lemon juice, Kosher salt, and pepper. Love this tossed with romaine and topped with some shredded parm. I like to think of it as my own caesar.

I did some track workouts in college the one year I ran x-country. Looking forward to doing them this summer at the high school up the street. And, weren't you freezing your patooty off in those shorts and t-shirt??

Today's workout: hanging out with my 4 1/2 year old son, then co-leading my daughter's Daisy Scout meeting. Phew! I'm gonna be so sore tomorrow…

I am not a fan of plain old sandwich white bread, but I love a good french bread. I'm not completely opposed to simple carbs.

How exciting to run with someone you admire! Have so much fun today!

I loove italian dressing!!!! =D

It's cool that you got to run with one of your idols! And you get to do it again today and on trails? Lucky! Billy sure is a great supporter. I like track workouts though I haven't done them in about a year.

how awesome is that?!?! im so happy for you!

I have never done a track workout – at least not since high school..many moons ago.

I have a cross training day today so i will probably do yoga.

My husband makes me do track workouts in the spring/summer. I HATE them but they are still better than the treadmill, in my opinion.

I'm doing a speed workout with 800 repeats… probably not as fast as yours…actually definitely NOT.

I love me some white fluffy rolls but on a sandwich I like wheat much better.

Reply

aww love that!! so great for you girl :) I actually am a goof and don't like dressing with my salad..call me crazy I know but my Grandpa was the same way haha. xoxo have a fabulous Tuesday!

How fun that you met your hero AND that she did your workout with you. What a great experience. I'm happy for you.

My workout today will HOPEFULLY be running outside at least a few miles. My knee has really been bugging me so I'll see what I can do.

My favorite salad dressing is Brianna's blush wine vinaigrette.

I eat white bread when it's given to me or when it's in baguette form.

Have a great Tuesday, friend!

Reply

WOW that sounds like a great workout buddy!!
i hate white bread.. i actually love whole wheat bread- it has taste and i love seeds in it too :D
today i did a good hilly treadmill run! i have a chest infection though so it was hard to breath.. uh oh

Reply

I agree with you–ceasar salad dressing is my favorite! Also, I love a simple lemon juice/olive oil/garlic/ S& P dressing. It always takes like sunshine!

I've never done a track workout. I'm still trying to just run a mile without exhausting myself. It's a long road back; you are an inspiration!

Reply

What a gorgeous background for your track!! The last time I did track workouts was in high school, oops! I really want this to change this summer though–it's hard to do a track workout when all of the tracks in the area are covered in snow. PS: you are a rockstar!! Great job!!

Reply

Favorite salad dressing is probably a raspberry vinaigrette. I love the sweetness on the salad!

Workout today was cross training and some abs! Loved it and worked up a large sweat!

Hmmm… I never buy white bread. Haven't in years. But if we are out at a restaurant and that's all they have, I'll eat it. But I do prefer grain or wheat!

Reply

i love ranch dressing. lots and lots of it. usually i don't have it though because other things are healthier. :)

now, i rarely do track workouts. there aren't many tracks in my town that unaffiliated runners can use… but i used to do them all the time in JH, HS, and college cc/track!

today i'm doing 2 1 mile repeats…its my husband's first repeat workout ever :) we're doing them on a bike path nearby.

i looove white bread. and wheat bread. but not rye, it's gross. :) i love bread!

I love you and your optimism. You make my day!

Reply

I can't believe you get to run outside with skin showing right now! We got snow yesterday… so jealous! My favorite dressing is French, by far. I love veggies alone but French dressing makes me want to eat salad for every meal!!

Reply

That's awesome that you had running buddies to push you through your track workout! I actually did a random track workout yesterday too (1600, 800, 400, 200 with a lap in between) on the indoor track. I was just gonna run, but I felt speedy when I got to the gym, so I went with it.
Egg sandwiches are the BEST dinner, especially with avocado. Avocado should be added to everything.

Reply

Caesar dressing for sure! I feel bad the whole time I'm eating it, but it's so good!

Reply

Ohmygoodness is that where you LIVE?! It is GORGEOUS!! Man alive I am coming to LIVE with you!!

My workout today is speedy 1k repeats, so snap!! I have to find a track near me soon…haven't done one in AGES! I rely WAY too much on the tread! :P

Seriously, I'm warning you. If you see me standing on your doorstep in a couple of days, you'll know why: scenery+you as a running bud+these Swedish Fish things you rave about so much!!!

track: havent done a session in a year, but im going to start this month (you and the hopefully warmer weather will inspire me!)
i'm running at the rec with ms. katie abrams during our hour long lunch since we are ACT testing today :)

I haven't done a track workout since I was in 7th grade! I think it's so awesome that you got to run with her. I love fresh sourdough bread…preferably in Italy! Workout today is a spin class with some of my new co-workers!

My favorite salad dressing is greek… that stuff is addictive! Today's workout for me is probably very similar to what you did yesterday: I'm doing a mile warm-up followed by 8×800 repeats on the track with a 2 min "active" (jog) break between each one, followed by a mile cool-down.

Reply

I wish that I had your will power for a workout like yours…maybe thats why i`ll never be skinny I lack the willpower that I need to achieve my goals. Your egg sandwich look delish!

I agree. Calories aside, I LOVE caesar dressing! That, or honey mustard. Yuuuu-uum!

And seriously, egg sandwiches are a huge staple in my diet. That will never change.

You're a rockstar!

I have never done track workouts or speed workouts but there is a loop in the un-finished neighborhood across the street from my neighborhood and I have been considering going over there and doing some speed workouts to see how fast I can run, I gotta practice otherwise I will never get faster lol
I never eat white bread, usually honey wheat or whole wheat.
My workout tonight is Level 3 of Shred and Jillian Michaels Yoga-1 (which I have never tried so I'm excited to do it!)

Reply

I have run on a track once but never done an actual track work out. I just don't want to use the track at work (my school). Maybe I will when I go back to school in the fall.

Your workout sounds fantastic! Today's my stretching day so I'm doing yoga tonight.

I usually don't eat white bread 'cause I'm not a big fan of the taste. I'll eat it on occasion though.

Reply

Wow, you sold me on Mary Ann. I'm a fan now.

I've never run on a track — well, at least not as an adult. I used to run track in high school, but I didn't know track workouts were essential for marathoners. I guess I thought that was like a 5k or 10k type of workout. Should I get on the bandwagon and do a track workout?

LOL about turning your chair at work into a wheelchair. Great visual.

Reply

Congrats that is too awesome!!! I'm in love with honey dijon for sure! I'll eat white bread if I'm out somewhere but I don't keep it on hand. Have an amazing day! It's national peanut butter lovers day, don't forget to celebrate!!

Reply

That's so cool that you got to meet her and run with her! Awesome!!

My favorite dressing is ranch. I just love it. I haven't done a track workout as an adult but I really should try to find a track that's open. I loved track when I did it in junior high. Today is running after work. Not sure if it will be treadmill or outside. That's still a toss up!! I eat white bread at restaurants but I only buy wheat.

Reply

I'm just wondering, I'm sure you've posted but where are you? Are you in Cali?

My favorite dressing is Creamy pesto from Old Spag factory! Yum!

As for white bread, I eat the white whole wheat from Sara Lee. Hubby doesn't like wheat so it's a happy medium.

Reply

I use to only eat white bread. I use to think wheat bread was gross and not good. Boy, was I wrong! I have my furthest run to date today…9 miles. For some odd reason, I'm nervous. Not sure why, I ran 8.5 last week.

Reply

Nice job on your first ever track workout! I am a noob to the track as well. I have yet to venture over to one. Maybe when it warms up a bit. I'm such a baby. lol.

Carrabas has this AMAZING creamy parmasean dressing. Seriously, I could drink it. I actually don't eat much white bread anymore. I'm a whole wheat kind of girl!

So you are totally my local running celebrity. I heart you. :)

Yay, girl!! You rock! So cool that you get to run with Mary Ann again. What with now having a running coach and training with rockstars, you are surely on your way to a sub-3:)

That is SO cool that you got to meet one of your running heroes :) You are my running hero…so if I ever run into you, I will be starstuck for sure!! :)

I used to eat the yogurt in a tube stuff all of the time! So funny!!

The part about you just wheeling around in your chair all day if you are sore- made me laugh- I do the same thing. I will just try to look pathetic, so if my boss needs something from me, he will just come to my office- HAHA! He already thinks I'm nuts- with all of my running /working out – and then I walk around with ice packs on my ankles all day! lol!!

What a great workout! I have to imagine that the view from the track helps make a workout there great. It's beautiful!
Um, I love breakfast for dinner, especially egg sandwiches! Great and easy way to get protein in at night when you don't want to cook a traditional meal.

Reply

Good for you girlie for getting in a track workout. I am interested to see what you'd have to say about my post about treadmill vs. track a few posts back. or maybe you already commented but I'm a big believer that the outside track running helps to make you a stronger runner. I think it is harder than a TM alone but that's just my personal take on it. Oh my, it is GORGEOUS there!!!!!!!!! I will have to check out who this lady is. :) Good for you Janae….so fun to watch you grow in your running life!! This is huge!!! I rem

Reply

oooops, I was going to say that I remember my high school coach making me do repeat 800's at like a 2:45/2:50 pace for at least 8 of them…so hard! I don't believe I could do those times anymore…I'd be happy with 3:15's. :) How many did you do? You might have said that.

Reply

Okay so I am so jealous you met Mary Ann. I totally follow her races as well. If there was a super stalker of the year award I should probably win. The two of you are seriously like my super running idols.

I used to do track workouts every Sunday….but lets be honest I don't really know what I'm doing. I need a coach but don't think my running abilities really merit one? maybe someday.

I had salad for dinner last night with Ranch, but my favorite it definitely the cafe Rio dressing.

Just love you Janae. Keep working hard Janae. You just seriously amaze me girl.

Reply

WOW! That is so cool that she was there working out too. I would have been super nervous. But if I was YOU, I wouldn't be nervous because you are a rockstar. So that is the view from the track? Do you realize how amazing that is!? It looks like a backdrop. Utah looks just plain beautiful.

Awesome workout girlie. I am going to start going to Tuesday night Track workouts with the San Diego Track Club (since I'm a member, I should probably show up once in awhile).

I love GOOD Ranch dressing. Not the bottled ones. Ruth's Chris Steakhouse has an amazing Ranch dressing. I could pour it on everything. Ahhhh!!!!
I meet with Team in Training every Wednesday night for track practice. Last Wednesday was our first one. I don't mind it since I'm running with other people but I'm not sure I'd want to do it by myself. Seems like it would be boring. :)

Today's workout is a 5K for time… participating in Detroit Runner's Virtual 5K and today is the day I do it :) Wish me some speediness!

What is your all time FAVORITE salad dressing (no thinking about calories okay)?

-Blue cheese. Which, I can't eat because dairy swells my throat. And I find most fake dairy stuff creepy. Second best? Salsa.

How often do you to track workouts?

-I used to do one every week, but, um, it's been a long long time.

What is your workout today?

-I brought my running clothes with me, so I plan on doing some running. Where and for how long, I don't know yet. Maybe I should hit up the track. Hmmmmmmm.

Do you ever eat white bread?

-If sourdough counts, then, yes, sometimes, when I go out to brunch. Usually it's wheat, though. And we ONLY buy wheat for at home use.

I wish I was close to a track (like, right outside my front door?). I don't know why, but the track seems intimidating!

Anyways, it looks like you just got a coach, I'm really curious to see how your times go with a coach, I bet you will improve even more. I could see you lowering your marathon time by a lot, maybe getting like top 25-50 overall of a big marathon like Chicago or New York, and winning or getting top 5 in smaller marathons…good luck!

Its awesome that Billy is getting into running!!!! Your workout sounds insanely tough! Great job!!

As for the questions:

What is your all time FAVORITE salad dressing (no thinking about calories okay)?
hands down, Hidden Valley Ranch. so good. but sooooo bad haha. I could put ranch on everything haha

How often do you to track workouts?
Ive never been. I did sprints up and down my street one day. Could not walk the next day haha. But I had that awesome I worked hard feeling too!

What is your workout today?
Ran on the treadmill while watching The OC, season 1, episode 1. I was obsessed with the show when it was originally now, and decided it is time to rewatch!

Do you ever eat white bread?
Not too often, but I think soft white bread, like wonder bread, makes the best classic PBJ…

ew track workouts. i want to try and get into them but we have one track in town, and it's not maintained so it's more like hurdling w/ all the holes and puddles. yeah…

Mmm, I love blue cheese dressing. Too bad it is awful for me!

I've never done a track workout. I was told I need to get my mileage up before I start trying for speed.

Have fun on your recovery run!

You rock!! Your speed workout sounds awesome, and the mountains in the back are breathtaking!!
I do track workouts on the treadmill, if that counts, LOL!
Workout today was 6 miles, easy. But, anxious about speed workout tomorrow.
I seldom eat white bread, but today, I'm thinking it's just not good to label things as "bad". I eat it in moderation when there's not a whole wheat option.

what a great workout with a super cool run-in! awesome that you are going to run with her again! when I am marathon training, I do one track work out a week. They are so killer but very worth it!

How many repeats did you do?

Ah that's so amazing! And you so deserve it. :) Good luck with your running girl!

Also, I love white bread when it's like artisan or italian bread or something… not so much sandwich bread, but the real deal. Though whoel grain is good and has its place there's something about a freshly baked loaf of pure unadulterated simple carbs… mmmm…

So happy for you Janae!! What a great workout!

I prefer wheat bread…I made the switch 15 years ago. I do love sourdough!!

Favorite dressing is from Trader Joe's…Champagne pear viniagrette w/gorgonzola. You've got to try this…if you haven't!! esp. 'cuz you love pears. I made a salad with diced pears, a bed of greens and this dressing drizzled over it…yummmm…sooo good!! :)

I've done a couple of track workouts. They're tough…wish I could get to the track more often!

Your friend Mary Ann is very pretty!! It's great that you "ran into her!!" :)

Have a great evening sweetie!! xo

I love hearty bread, so white bread is never eaten EXCEPT if there is tomatoes and mayonnaise, I just have to make my favorite tomato sandwich. When I was a wee little kid, my mom ate them, so it's my comfort food.
