How to become the favorite aunt.

March 6, 2011

I missed you my lil’ blogger bff’s.  I have a new found respect for all of you woman out there with children.  All of you woman that have kids and train……um, how do you do it, I AM EXHAUSTED and after I push publish, I am taking my second nap of the day.  Good thing it is SUNDAY rest day…….but that also means it is almost MONDAY SPEED DAY.  I am scurred.

How to become the favorite aunt/uncle or how to make kids really love you.

Let them play ipod games whenever they want.

Share your lemonade with them.  I am pretty sure we went through at least five glasses.

Take them to their favorite restaurant (Del Taco) and let them play on the play place for hours.

You may also do as I did and create challenges for them.  For example:  Keep lemonade in their mouth, one eye closed and crossed fingers as they go through the entire obstacle course and slides in less than 20 seconds.  I made them gurgle at the end to prove that they didn’t swallow their drink.

When you get home from Del Taco whip up a batch of cookies with them and eat half the dough yourself explaining that adults are immune to salmonella poisoning and that is why it is okay for me to eat large amounts of cookie dough.

Hot Chocolate after a million cookies? Sure why not….heck, add double the amount of the chocolate mix and put in as many marshmallows as your little heart desires.

Let them stay up until 11:30 p.m. with you watching Toy Story 3 and Jimmy Newtron and then join you in bed right when they wake up in the morning to hang out and use your as a chair.

Last but not least, chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast are a must.

I really am more tired than I am after LONG runs and even marathons:)  It was so much fun and it was (sorry, time for mushy gushy grossness) especially awesome to see Billy in action….he is going to be an amazing Dad someday (that is after I win a few marathons:)

Did you babysit a lot growing up?

-I used to babysit almost every weekend from the years of 12-16.  I was also a nanny for a few years for two kids in elementary school and that was SO MUCH FUN!!!

Do you have neices of nephews?

-Yep, 13 of them!

As you know I did weights yesterday and I AM SORE!!! How many times a week do you feel like you are sore from your workouts?

-I feel like everyday I am at least a little sore somewhere, I don’t remember not feeling sore anywhere.  Let’s just hope that means I am gaining muscle:)

If you are a mom and you run/workout……HOW DO YOU DO IT???

Victoria Elizabeth March 6, 2011 at 3:21 pm

You are such a good Auntie!!!

aspoonfulofsmash March 6, 2011 at 3:21 pm

I am usually always sore from weights..only a little from running and yes I love babysitting and have over 30 younger cousins!

Geek 3000 March 6, 2011 at 3:21 pm

I did babysit growing up but never really enjoyed it until I had my own kids. Now that I have my own kids we totally do all that stuff, everyday! With of course a good sprinkling of healthy food and not always so late! Just the other night I made crepes with peanut butter and chocolate frosting. Who's the best mom? This girl!
Running and kids, can I say YMCA! Free 90 minutes of daycare everyday. The reason I am sane and not a zillion pounds! Oh and they make great weights for pushing in a jogger. Talk about a good core/ab workout while you are running! They also love being bench pressed. Just think of them as talking kettle weights and you'll get all the working out you can ever want!

How is it possible that I'm the first to comment?!?

I'm a running mommy, and I think that is a bond that makes me LOVE other blogging running mommies – because it is a sacrifice/challenge to get our workouts in, and because our bodies have gone through pregnancy/delivery, making previous PRs a goal to be (re)achieved for many (not me – I didn't start running seriously until after babies!). The only thing I can say about being able to do it is 1) I have an AWESOME husband who I love so much, who allows me to take weekends to race and long run, and supports me through it. and 2) give up some sleep. It's the only way I can find to make it all work!

Reply March 6, 2011 at 3:24 pm

ah, there it goes – I knew you were too popular for me to be the first! 4 comments within a minute of each other… you are super awesome!

caitlin March 6, 2011 at 3:30 pm

wow girl you're awesome :) i can't believe you have 13 nieces/nephews! how wonderful for you! xoxo

BigHappyFamily March 6, 2011 at 3:31 pm

What a good Aunt you are. Super fun! When you are a parent you don't have to be "super fun" all the time, but it can still be tiring. More than the tiring part, for me at least, is, you really need to condense your workout time to an hour while the kids are little. "Time" is the biggest limiter in my workout.

Did I babysit? Never! Not a fan of kids, really. Funny now to think about it as a mom of 5.

I get sore when I change things up. Since I was training for the 1/2, I have really just been running and lifting (same old things). Now I will go back to more variety, like swimming and kick boxing. I'd also like to find some different weight lifting things to focus on. Sore = success.

I did it! First half marathon this morning in 1:39.04. I am waiting on some pictures from my brother and course photog to write up a detailed blog post.

Emma (Sweet Tooth Runner) March 6, 2011 at 3:34 pm

Holy Moly you have SO MANY nieces+nephews!! Seriously you are an awesome aunt!! And this is my life right here. Cookie dough eating, watching Toy Story till late and pancakes for breakfast?! Yep, all me! :P

And aches?! Like EVERY DAY! Specially after BodyPump! I wake up feeling like I've been hit with a mallet, but like you said, it means it's working…right?! :)

Mrs. D March 6, 2011 at 3:34 pm

i babysat pretty much weekly since i was 10, started nannying at 18. it is super tiring!! haha its HARD im not gunna lie… thats why the BOB is so awesome… i get home from work, nap with my little guy, then go for a run with him! plus i eat all the time for energy :) its usually the only thing i ever do for myself nowadays.

Anne March 6, 2011 at 3:35 pm

I babysat all the time. I love kids but I don't think I'm ready for my own. I watched my sis's 4 young kids for a weekend once and by the end of it I was throwing tantrums.

Right now I have 10 nieces and nephews, but I get to add one niece to that count sometime this week or next. Woohoo!!!

Kelsey March 6, 2011 at 3:36 pm

Those kids are so cute! You made me crave chocolate chip pancakes.

movesnmunchies March 6, 2011 at 3:36 pm

ahahahahahhahahahhahah funny post! i babysat LAST NIGHT actually.. the exhausting part is just trying to keep happy, cheery and open minded the whole time!! it is tiring!!!!

Karen Greenberg March 6, 2011 at 3:39 pm

I am a mom, and I run/ workout. Fortunately my daughters are in 2nd and 4th grade and can take care of themselves a little bit. It also helps that the YMCA near us is AWESOME! The girls can take their homework and sit in the lobby to work on it while I work out. They can also do the rock wall, go into the computer lab, play board games, and a variety of other activities. So, when I hit the gym the girls think it is time for their independent time away from me because they have the run of the rest of the YMCA. That is SUPER nice! They also come to classes with me on occasion, and we make it family time. Since starting a healthier lifestyle last year, my kids know that exercise is important for all of us but especially on the front of my mind since I am the one in the family who really needs to lose weight.

J. L. March 6, 2011 at 3:40 pm

Mom's just have to be more creative with their workout time…and scheduling. And sometimes it seems like I'm asking my hubby for permission for workout times so he can watch the kiddos. He doesn't see it this way. And thank goodness for gyms with daycare! And last summer when my kids were older, I discovered my "block" was a mile. So I'd run a block, check on the kids do another mile. I trained for an olympic distance tri like this, while my husband traveled. And, my kids know when mom needs a workout, running makes me a better mom. Period.

Reply March 6, 2011 at 3:41 pm

your nieces and nephews look so sweet. I think you definitely win aunt of the year :)

R Hacker March 6, 2011 at 3:49 pm

You are awesome! I completely agree with you that it is so much fun being the favorite aunt! My husband and I don't have kids (yet, maybe in a few years) and we take my sister's 3 kids a few times a year. A long weekend here and there and then for an entire week around Christmas time. They are 5, 6 and 10 and so much fun! However, I never get time to workout when they're here and I sleep like crazy after they leave. I do it when I'm on vacation from work and have no other commitments. I'm completely in your boat that I have no idea how parents do it!

XLMIC March 6, 2011 at 3:50 pm

You are the BEST auntie! My kids would LOVE to have you babysit!

I babysat a whole lot all through high school… every weekend and more. I have 2 nieces and 2 nephews… they are older and not local so I have never babysat them.

My working out is very limited. And I am not as fun a mommy as you are an auntie ;-) I was a really fun stepmom, though. I joke about how that drained all my 'fun' energy. Right now I only am able to squeeze in 3 runs a week. I could (and probably should) throw a little cross-training in, but I most often just feel wiped out. I am also a pretty old mamma… so I need to conserve my energies ;-)

Laura @ Meet Virginia March 6, 2011 at 3:55 pm

That sounds like the perfect weekend! You are the best Aunt ever!!!

Katy March 6, 2011 at 3:57 pm

13! That's so many! I would lose track of them, for sure. Haha. I have ZERO nieces/nephews but once Shane and I get married, I will have 2 nephews by his sister. :)

Sarah March 6, 2011 at 3:57 pm

We babysat our 20 month old niece for a few hours last night and I'm pooped today! She was running all over the place – we had some Crayola color wonderful markers and this neat paper that sticks to the walls so she could "write" on the walls, watched Shrek and Despicable Me (and a little Barney), made cinnamon rolls and scrambled eggs for dinner and let her sit on the coffee table. Fun times :) The funniest part was when she found the fridge and started DEMANDING milk! She chugged the first glass in like 10 seconds flat…at least she'll have strong bones!

SueM March 6, 2011 at 3:57 pm

ha ha! great post! all of this will come back to bite you some day when you are a mom :0) in the meantime, keep spoiling those nieces and nephews.

when you're a mom/runner, you just do the best you can. you don't clean your house as much as you should and you let little things slide, but you make it work.

Jessica March 6, 2011 at 3:58 pm

I don't have any children, but I LOVE being Aunt Jess :)

Korin Lopez March 6, 2011 at 3:59 pm

Your Auntie skills remind me of one of my younger sister's skills….she is definitely the favorite Aunt! I have five kids so I get up at 4:30 to get in my workouts! I have been extremely sore lately and I don't like it!

fitchocoholic March 6, 2011 at 4:00 pm

I'm usually sore four days out of the week…I try to do 3 days of strength…and it really adds up! =P
Looks like babysitting was a lot of fun! =D

runningonwords March 6, 2011 at 4:06 pm

You definitely can see the relation between you and your brunette niece in the cookie dough picture! You sound like a great aunt!

Kara March 6, 2011 at 4:13 pm

I want you to be my aunt too.

Babies make running more challenging, but they are the only ones willing to hug you after you come home all sweaty. :)

Sarah Corrigan March 6, 2011 at 4:22 pm

I am a mom of 2 girls, 4 and 2. I could not do it (esp the long runs) if it weren't for a supportive husband. We do not have family close, and he is willing to adjust his schedule any which way—in order to help me get runs in. Just today he took the girls to the park that I ran 9 miles at, and by the time I was done he had gone to the store and bought a picnic lunch for us all! And I do the same for him–I will add! He is the best, and together we make a great team. You seem to have a supportive husband too and when kiddos come around, he will be more than willing to do what he needs to do then too!

pajamachef March 6, 2011 at 4:31 pm

i totally babysat allllll the time in junior high/high school. i kinda miss it….

Angie March 6, 2011 at 4:54 pm

Whoa!! you have THIRTEEN nieces and nephews?? crazy!! I have 0! :) You look like you are really good with the kiddos! They are SOO cute!!!!

Pam March 6, 2011 at 4:56 pm

I don't have any of my own, but I gained 2 neices and one nephew by marriage. Dewayne's sister has 3 kids, but they're mostly grown. Justin is 22 and getting married in June, Mariah is 17 and leaving for the Air Force in August, and Taylor will turn 11 next month. She's the closest to a kid that we have in the family!

michael. mindy. dane. March 6, 2011 at 5:07 pm

i am not training for anything, and my workours are never more than an hour, and i only have one kid…BUT i've realized recently that it is a priority adn even if i don't want to leave my little guy to do it, i have to. also, as far as the energy goes? remember that you won't just suddenly have 3 kids that are the ages of your nieces/nephews. you start with one tiny one and it's gradual, ya know? i mean, i only have one, but i used to DIE when i'd tend my nieces and nephews, but having a baby is my life, so it's normal. it's not like i'm extra tired. you adjust. if that makes sense??

Colleen March 6, 2011 at 5:25 pm

I definitely find that bribery works awesome with the niece and nephew. I only have the two of them – 4 year old twins. I don't see them often (they live 3000 miles away), but I find that the more candy and loud toys I can give them, running and screaming with them, jumping on the bed, etc all makes them better people! ;)

runyogarepeat March 6, 2011 at 5:27 pm

Sounds like such a fun weekend for you guys & the kids! I love babysitting, and one summer, I babysat a 2 year old girl at the summer camp I work at. We played outside, picked blueberries, and took naps everyday, it was awesome, but SO tiring! I bet the kids loved all the treats you guys ate!

scissorbill March 6, 2011 at 5:31 pm

The Y has free, good childcare or I just get up super early before my husband goes to work.

marathonmaiden March 6, 2011 at 5:34 pm

that picture with the hot chocolate mix?! priceless! i'm not an aunt but i think that being an aunt is sooooo cool. you get to have all the fun with the kids and then let the parents do the discipline ;)

Nicole March 6, 2011 at 5:43 pm

I babysat all the time when i was little! I cant wait to have munchkins climbing on me in the morning & screaming with exciement when i walk in the door! :)

Kristen March 6, 2011 at 5:59 pm

train with kids = running at 5am before the husband goes to work, running during school/preschool, jogging stroller, running while the biggest one rides his bike along side, early morning long runs on the weekend, treadmill at the gym when they have childcare, running on the indoor track that is above the pool and looks down to the pool while the biggest one is in swim lessons and constantly feeling guilty that I should be spending time with the family instead of running and running just a bit fast knowing the kiddos will be anxiously awaiting you when you get home.

Gracie (Complicated Day) March 6, 2011 at 6:37 pm

Such cute kids!!!

Jogging with Fiction March 6, 2011 at 6:51 pm

Excellent babysitting skills! I've babysat since I was 11 and spent four years as a nanny. It was great, but also good birth control lol!

I don't have any nieces or nephews, I'm the only married sibling in my family!

I totally want to get my husband to babysit and see how he'd be in action lol

chelsey @ clean eating chelsey March 6, 2011 at 6:59 pm

You are the best aunt in the world. I'm a mean aunt who won't give my niece and nephew things I wouldn't eat myself. I'm ahorrible person. :( Okay, I lied – ice cream regularly occurs. :)

I love seeing the Husband in action. He loves kids!!!

Rene March 6, 2011 at 7:37 pm

Will you be my aunt? Nevermind that I'm a good 12 years older than you. Lucky neices and nephews. I have 8 neices and nephews but they live too far aways to spoil on a regular basis.
I'm sore 1 – 2 times a week depending on intensity. My kids are in school now so I hit the gym when they are at school. When they were little I used the child care at the gym regularly.

Mallory March 6, 2011 at 7:41 pm

Looks like you had a great time!! I babysat a lot as a teenager and I loved it. Kids can be so much fun!

I have one nephew and I love him sooooo much!!

I am sore about once per week and it's usually after I do weights.

Maia March 6, 2011 at 7:41 pm

Glad you had fun babysitting! Finding time to run with my little one is hard- especially since my husband is a runner as well. We have to tag team it a lot- you go first, then I go when you get home. Summer is much easier, since we both are teachers, we can go whenever we want and take the munchkin with us ;)

untilyoutri March 6, 2011 at 7:45 pm

I used to babysit all the time, and I used to teach horseback riding lessons to kids and worked at a horseback riding summer camp! Working at the camp was SO much work (heat, children, and 1,000 pound animals!), but I loved loved loved it! The kids were so much fun, and if they were ever bad you just had to threaten not to let them ride and they shaped up immediately;). Also, you got to tire them out and then send them home at the end of the day;).

Thirteen!? Wow!! No nieces and nephews for me yet, Eric and I are both the oldest in our families!

I get sore after speed workouts/weights, really long rides/ maybe a couple of times a week?

I don't know how the moms do it, either!! I am so impressed with moms who still manage to train/workout on a regular basis! They are all my heroes!!

fitnessnfoodiegirl March 6, 2011 at 8:13 pm

Wow what a great aunt! It looks like you all had fun!
I always get sore after weight training workouts, because my body isn't as used to them as running… I think the key is stretching and a consistent schedule.

ashley & sundance March 6, 2011 at 8:14 pm

Super auntie! Love the pic of the kids and billy in bed. So stinkin cute! I bet the kids loved spending time with you and billy.

I'm surprisingly not too sore today. Quads and calves are a little tight… i should foam roll later…

LOL! I have 3 neices and nephews and I get so tired after babysitting. I don't know how mom's do it! They amaze me. Someday I will have my own to make me that tired too. hehe!

Karissa Kay March 6, 2011 at 8:49 pm

Will you guys come out to DC and babysit my daughter?! It looks like those kids had the time of their lives.
Motherhood is definitely exhausting but your body gets used to it. I fit in working out early in the morning before my daughter wakes up, or at night after she goes to bed. BUT, we just purchased a new jogging stroller and there is a park right down the trail so we'll be running there together a lot this Spring.

We are Ben and Rebecca March 6, 2011 at 8:52 pm

I'm an awesome stud muffin, that's how I do it! Or maybe I cry sometimes over spilt milk. No, the first one. Definitely the first one.

You're body adjusts to kids, luckly they start off real small and pretty easy, and trick you into a couple more. Then you forget what "well rested" feels like, and it becomes the new "norm". Add running into the mix and we're pretty much in a chubby cheek-ed induced euphoria.

Dorry March 6, 2011 at 8:53 pm

Such a fun Aunt & Uncle slumber party! I'm sure they had a blast with y'all. I didn't babysit a whole lot growing up – every now and then. I have 3 nieces who I love and am sort of obsessed with. My sister is running the half marathon with me in 3 weeks, and training is hard for her with 2 kids, but she's getting it done!

Sending you speedy thoughts for your run tomorrow. :)

Michelle Fritzler March 6, 2011 at 9:22 pm

Looks like ya'll had a lot of fun and some good healthy food too! :)

I am a new mom to a four month old little girl! I ran all through my pregnancy and I am now back to running 6-7 miles 6 days a week. Basically it takes pure dedication and motivation to get up at 5am and run on little sleep but it is way worth it since I have my pre prego body back and it also makes me feel like my "old" self again. I can't wait until my daughter is 6 months old and she can run with me in the jogging stroller.

The Monahan's March 6, 2011 at 9:42 pm

My equation for being able to run while having kids? Treadmill+naptime. I've found that getting a good run/workout in helps me be a better mom. I'm able to de-stress and find more patience to handle the daily tantrums and disasters.

2 Running Chix March 6, 2011 at 9:49 pm

Great post! You will make a great mom! Working out is my "me time" and makes me a better mom!

Zaneta March 6, 2011 at 9:52 pm

What a cute post! You are such a great aunt!! Who doesn't love doing all those things?! especially kids ;)

Cory Reese March 6, 2011 at 10:01 pm

I always try to sneak the cookie dough without them seeing, but I like your logical explanation much better. Thanks for the tip!

sandyshelly March 6, 2011 at 10:07 pm

That looks like my kind of night/morning!

On an unrelated note, my brother just got into University of Utah. He's not sure when he's going to start though. We're already planning our visit out there though!

Sid March 6, 2011 at 10:12 pm

I have 3 kiddos and I workout/run 6 days a week- it's tuff and takes sacrifice- I wake up at 5 most mornings. But it's so worth it – I'm a better momma when I workout!!

Lindsey March 6, 2011 at 11:58 pm

Those kids are precious! I love her face when she's holding the hot chocolate mix! You are such a good aunt. :)

Laura March 7, 2011 at 12:05 am

I babysat a lot when I was in school but now it's been years! I don't have a any nieces or nephews but I do have two little cousins who are 3 and 5! I love those girls with all my heart, but they are EXHAUSTING!!

Samantha @ Mama Notes March 7, 2011 at 12:10 am

I have two little boys ( 4 months and 2) and it is hard to get a good workout in. I am NOT a morning person, so waking up at 5 or 6 to exercise is so not happening. I wish, I want to work on that! I usually work out in the evenings after my husband is home and the kids are in bed, so like around 7 or 8 pm.

squigglefloey March 7, 2011 at 3:20 am

Omg I want your niece's hair! She has such a cute little-do! What a doll :)

lovelymissanne March 7, 2011 at 4:30 am

AHHHH- this is adorable! Can you please tell your nieces to stop being so darn cute! Happy speedy monday!! Knock it dead girl! :)

Sabrina @ Radioactive Runner March 7, 2011 at 7:06 am

What a fun Auntie you are!!
I used to babysit a lottt growing up. I loved it..especially babies.
In my running group there are a few moms they run with (well, push) their kids (sometimes 2 kids) and they inspire me!! I don't know how they do it either… i soo hope I can be like that when I have kids.

jham March 7, 2011 at 7:19 am

I babysat growing up but never like the kiddos have as much fun as you let your nieces and nephews! They are a lucky bunch!

I am a running mom and get up 6 days a week at 5:30am to fit in a run or cross-training work out daily. It makes me a better mom to have that time for myself and my health. Some weekends I sleep in and the hubs watches the kids so I can run outside! What a treat!

Laura March 7, 2011 at 7:30 am

What a fun auntie you are! Those kids are ADORABLE!

Little kids are the best! I used to babysit a TON when I was younger…I went all out and even made my own business cards haha.

Do you have neices of nephews?
None yet! I come from such a tiny family. My sister JUST got married about a month ago so no kids yet…plus I only have TWO cousins total–that is how small our family is!

I am probably sore about 2 times a week from working out…and it is usually from overdoing it with weights. I'm rarely sore from cardio unless I do something totally different like kickboxing or something.

my little celebration March 7, 2011 at 8:32 am

Oh my gosh. That picture of the little one sitting on top of Billy in bed is friggin' hilarious. Made my day.

Kiley March 7, 2011 at 9:41 am

It's a lot easier when they are your own kids. I have babysat my nieces & nephews, but having my own baby nnow is so much easier than taking care of the other kiddos. Plus, you need an extra awesome husband who will watch the kiddos while you train…mine man is so great!

Stephanie March 7, 2011 at 10:44 am

I love these pictures so much! My favorite is the grin she's giving with the chocolate milk. Basically…it's all about balance. :) And realizing that once you're a parent that it's no longer all about you…but that you still have to be you and do you so they have something to look up to. :)

I made so much money growing up being a babysitter/nanny. Gosh I just love kids. :)

Stephanie March 7, 2011 at 10:45 am

and I meant hot chocolate. Monday brain fog.

funderson March 7, 2011 at 11:16 am

I have unofficial nieces and nephews…
I make time for workouts in the early hours. I'm not a morning routine fan with the kid so I leave and dad has to do it….perfection…

Kate March 7, 2011 at 11:51 am

Aww, you two will make such fantastic parents! I am 24 (almost 25) and I stil babysit constantly. Just babysit last night actually. :) It's like my part-time job. I love kids! I just can't imagine having any. Moms get ALL of my respect. It is exhausting!

ShortSkirts March 7, 2011 at 12:09 pm

cute, i used to babysit every weekend for this one family. They were great.

I can't imagine having kids yet, i'm not sure i can keep a plant alive. I really want a basil plant but i'm afraid i'll kill it

Emily March 7, 2011 at 12:27 pm

the picture of your niece with the hot chocolate is so "omg that girl is the next crazy awesome hungryrunnergirl"!

ratherthecouch March 11, 2011 at 12:25 am

Oh man! I LOVE the pic of the little one in bed with the crazy hair! That weekend sounds awesome! Will you come baby sit me?

Laura March 26, 2011 at 4:31 pm

The pic of the little girl with big eyes over the hot cocoa container is pretty much the CUTEST THING EVER. She cannot BELIEVE you gave her free reign with all that chocolate :)
