I conquered my fears and ran with an elite athlete and had the best time of my life doing it.

I told you some of Alex’s times in the last post for the marathon and mile but come to find out today he SPECIALIAZES in ultra’s (50-miler and the 100-miler).  Basically, he wins them and he will be running professionally/full time within the next few years.  That would be the life….. Okay, I guess I will go to work a.k.a. running in the most gorgeous races around the world, train all day everyday, get paid to do it and have tons of free gear sent to me.  I think I could get used to that.

I thought I loved the treadmill……I forgot how much I LOVE running outside.  For the first 5 miles we ran off of the light the moon reflected on the snow, no cars and no lights.  When you come hang out with me in Utah and after we go get ice cream I will take you up this canyon, it is a little piece of heaven.

One of the waterfalls along the canyon (picture during the summer).

DSCN1081.JPG

We then encountered some ice, I fell.  When do I not fall? I always sacrifice my arms when I fall because you can still run with a broken arm.  No leg pains but my right arm is hurting a little bit….it was worth it!

We finished 15 miles with a 7:08 pace (sorry Alex, I know you wanted to do a 5:08 pace so thanks for slowing down for me:).  We talked the entire time and it felt like it was a comfortable pace which made me super happy because my goal pace for Boston is 6:52 and I know when race time comes I WILL be able to push myself to that pace.

IMG_4141.JPG

I came home and jumped on the treadmill to finish up. I did the last 11.2 miles of the Boston course.  I really wanted to do this because I wanted to try the hills portion of the course on tired legs.  I watched the Biggest Looser, ate skittles and slowed down my pace.  In talking with Alex I learned about the importance of long runs being to be on your legs for a while and build up an aerobic base so it was fun to slow it down a little.

26.2 miles in 3:18.

I immediately filled up the bathtub with snow for an ice bath (15 minutes), drank 14 cups of chocolate milk with glutamine and foam rolled like you couldn’t believe.  I do not like being sore and will do anything to prevent it.

The rest of the day will be spent on the couch contemplating shaving my legs, plucking my eyebrows and putting on make-up followed by going to the best salad bar in the world with Megan.  I will be double fisting the breadsticks and I might just have to say it is my birthday (6 days ago) to get a free dessert.

P.S. I LOVED my new Under Armour gear.  When we started it was 20 degrees and I never got cold.  This is coming from the girl that drinks 8 glasses (literally) of hot chocolate a day to keep warm, wuss face is my middle name.

P.P.S. Something I learned from Alex was the importance of keeping a running journal and to record every single detail.  This helps mentally when you can look back at your training and realize how much you’ve done and how ready you are!  When you are neck and neck with someone else and they start sprinting you KNOW that you can too because you have it recorded in your book that you have done everything in your power to train and push yourself.  I know AMANDA keeps an amazing running journal.

WISH MY DADIO, aka the most amazing man in the world a happy birthday (yesterday):)  LOVE YOU DAD!!!! Thank you for dealing with my weirdness, working so hard EVERYDAY and being such a good example to me!!

Do you get cold easily?

-Um, yes.  I think it is part hereditary because all the girls in my family are constantly cold.  But maybe we are just using that as an excuse to buy pretty coats, take long hot baths and have an IV of hot chocolate connected to us at all times.

Do you keep a life/running/exercise journal?

-Starting today baby, I am going to Target to pick out a cute one!

What are your Friday night plans?

Have you ever broken any bones?

-I was racing my brother (he had a car and I had roller blades).  My stupid competitive side came out and I got going way too fast, snapped my arm into two.

Congrats on the running accomplishment!

I get cold easily. I blame it on my size 34As. =P

Tonight I want to relax, eat some pasta, and watch TV. Maybe fall asleep around 8 or 9. (I get up b/t 4 and 4:30 during the week for work is why.)

No broken bones. KNOCK ON WOOD.

Happy Belated Birthday to your dad!

I keep a log of all the workouts i do on my google calendar, that way i can see what i've done at a glance, and take notes if i feel like it in the description fields.

Tonight is a 4 mile run after work, then The Decemberists concerts, then probably going to bed and not out because I have a morning gym date!

I broke my leg in 5th grade from falling off a swing. The S loop which connects the seat to the chain wasn't closed all the way, so when i got all the way up to the top, and the chain grabbed to yank me back down, it just disconnected from the seat and I fell. I had a full plaster cast for 3 weeks and a walking one for 3 more weeks after it was awful.

I am ALWAYS cold. I have about ten million blankets draped over couches and chairs in my house.

I don't keep a running journal, but I document all of my runs on daily mile. I think I'd slack on a journal, but I love technology!

Tonight Mike and I are picking up a bonus dog we're babysitting for the next week. Then it's pizza and a movie. The perfect evening.

I broke my jaw when I was three. I feel off a razor type scooter with my mom and she fell on top of me and I hit the concrete…

Way to go on your run today! Super inspiring to hear about your training and really makes me want to have an awesome long run this weekend!

I have been excited to read this post all day! Walking to campus today I was thinking how I couldn't wait to get home to see how your run went :) I get intimidated when I first run with someone so I know it can feel kind of scary at first. But it's always worth it. Nice work!

Yayyy, sounds like an awesome run! I always appreciate running outside after being stuck inside on the treadmill.
I have a Runner's World training journal, it has fun monthly stories and weekly quotes.
I am always cold, and I hate being cold, so I layer up when I go outside and sleep with 10 blankets. I also spend tons of time in my hot tub when I am home on break.
Happy Birthday to your dad!

So glad to hear you had a great run! Watch out, Boston! I get cold a lot but always heat up quickly when I run…it's weird. My big Friday plans are relaxing (day off) and a late birthday dinner with the family!

That is SO cool to be able to run with such an amazing elite runner!! Your description of your run sounds so beautiful and fun! You will be SO ready to hit that 6:52 pace! :)
I don't keep a detailed exercise journal, but it seems like a great idea to gather really useful info about training and injury/fatigue. If you can look back and see what you did, I'm sure it's easier to figure what you should/shouldn't do next time. Great post!!

Reply

Girl you are so AMAZING!! You could TOTALLY be a professional runner!! And Holy Moly Alex sounds like a running god!!

I keep a training journal, and always have! It is SO COOL looking back at my first entries, and how I couldn't run to the end of my road and back without collapsing! :P

HAPPY BIRTHDAY PAPA HRG!! :D

Have a great Friday night gorgeous!!

you are really amazing. i love reading your blog because you are constantly kicking a**, both as a running machine and a candy queen!! sounds like such a great run and now all i want to do is run run run!!
i don't keep a running journal, although when i was training for boston last year i had a calendar that i wrote my training plan in one color and what i actually did in another color – so i could organize which days were which work outs and make sure i was keeping on track. i think writing in a journal would be even better b/c you can write about how you feel after a workout and tips/thoughts so you can go back and remember them later!

i am always cold!! i am living in the wrong state!

i have plans with my bf and some friends but i'm going to be home early so i can rest up for a run in the morning. and by rest up i mean catch up on my fave tv shows and eat lots of candy :)

I suck at journaling…so I just keep a blog :-)

tonigh, my in-laws are taking a bunch of us out to The Ram for my pre-birthday dinner. I see a hamburger topped with a fried egg in my near future :D

I broke my pinky toe once trying to get into some undies. It was HILARIOUS!

I like cocoa, too, sometimes with peanut butter mixed in.

26.2 miles in 3:18 in training? Wow!

Reply

yes on the journal..I keep track of the miles and everything online though at the daily mile, I love it.

I am always cold. people always say my blood has to be blue. I am cold in the summer here in Cali…I drink hot herbal tea all year long.

I broke 7 bones. I kept all the stinky casts for a long time with all the stuff my friends wrote on them!

Reply

It amazes me how casually you talk about running a marathon in 3:18…and allude to the fact you might not even be sore afterwards! You are a superstar!

I kept a journal journal for a long time. I haven't in awhile, but enjoyed it when I did. I've been thinking about a running journal to. But mostly because I'm a total geek and feel like I might be able to correlate my performance to things like hydration, sleep, nutrition etc. if I had all the data sitting in front of me.

You Are Awesome !!!

I am religious about logging all my workouts to a T. I use the runner's world log so I can do it anywhere, including from my iphone. I also keep an excel spreadsheet for each training cycle- I am a nerd, I love Excel!

Reply

Your run sounds ahh-mazing. I love running outside and your scenery would be a much appreciated site after running the same route recently.

I sort of keep a running journal. I have a spreadsheet where I track distance, time, pace and notes. My notes are mostly what shoes I wore or if I was sick or if it was a race. I like it because it lets me see how my pace has improved.

Tonight is the big night – dinner in and grocery shopping. I am so not cool.

You are an absolute star. I am so amazed. And I am so jealous, too. You rock.

I love how you're like, "Hey, it's Friday, I think I'll go run a marathon for fun." Crazy, but in a good, motivational way.

I have a kept a journal since I was 7- for 20 years. They're cheesy but the cheapest therapy ever. I plan on either having mine buried with me or having a bon fire when I know I'm about to kick the bucket.

Girl, you are too cool for school. If you become famous, you should come train me in Florida. I will pay you in Swedish Fish and cupcakes. We can run all day, and go for ice cream afterwards. :)

Happy Birthday to your daddyyy!!!

I am just temperature intolerant in general. Just ask mike…I'm either hot or cold and its just an inconvenience. haha oops! can't help.

You are my idol.

As for broken bones, this list could be very long. I've broken both wrists (one on the monkey bars, one in soccer)…then I've broken pretty much all my toes (soccer) and I have sprained my ankles so many times that it got to the point I was just pulling shreds of bone away with the ligament. Pretty sweet huh?

Did I mention you are my idol? You are and you're GORGEOUS on top of it.

Haven't commented in awhile so thought I'd send a quick note to check in and say hello!

Sounds like an epic morning you had there. I wish I had waterfalls like that to run by every day.

Plans for tonight include a run in about an hour, followed by pizza and a long night hike with our adventure racing team… It's 65 degrees in Philly today!!

And broken bones? Let's see… fingers, elbow, and foot/ankle in six places. I'm a bit of a klutz.

holy cow…super impressed. That canyon is beautiful and you blazed through it. I can't even imagine running at the pace you do! Way to rock it.

I can't wait to see your sub-3 Boston marathon results.

I get cold even on eighty degree days. I was the only lifeguard at my pool to actually wear a sweatshirt when it was sunny out.. yay low body fat for increased performance, boo low body fat during East coast winters.
Journal: I started keeping one when I began training for my first marathon, and it is so helpful. Whenever I have a pain or little twinge, I can look back and see if the same thing happened x amount of days ago when I did x exercise.

Congrats on a great run! :) I enjoy running with people faster than me… kind of gives me some umph!

I keep an online journal (in excel) of all of my workouts. I add notes to the boxes about things I want to remember. I look at it a lot! :)

If I had to stay inside in order to run, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't run at all (or not nearly as much). The high of running outside is WAY better than the little "high" I get running inside. It is truly why I love running so much!

oh my goodness gracious. If I could run by waterfalls I'd run outside every day! ;)

I need to be better about journaling, especially my thoughts related to my runs. I keep a log but it's not specific enough.

I am so glad you liked running outside! Pittsburgh can be chilly sometimes, but it is all about wearing layers that can breathe (I wear a face mask too, lol) and I can honestly say after ten minutes of running, even in -10 degree weather, I am comfortable. I don't get cold easily. It's that fat layer that keeps me warm. Now the heat, that really kills me.

I am always cold. always. However when it comes to running, I am super sensitive to humidity and heat. I'd so much rather be cold. It's been in the 80s this week and my body is SO not acclimated back yet. Only a matter of time before it's 100 everyday :-(

I'm pretty sure I broke my ring toe once. It was several years ago, back when I still lived with my parents. I got up in the middle of the night to pee, and my parents for some reason had taken the extension leaf out of the dining room table and had it propped up against the wall in the hallway. I didn't turn the light on to walk to the bathroom and BAM! It was all purple and black and hurt like the dickens, but I never went to the doctor over it.

You are seriously amazing. I'm trying to get ready for a 10K in May, and you're off running marathons like it ain't no thang. You're my motivation!

YOU ARE SOMETHING ELSE!

I broke my pinkie in a 5th grade basketball game-played the rest of the half and score 26 points like it was my job. Yeah, I pretty much dominated 5th grade basketball!

CANDY + BOY + TV = BEST NIGHT EVER
ENJOY!

I'm jealous of all your time off, lady!

I'm pretty much always cold.

Broken my eye socket bone. That hurt BAD. And I broke my big toe, knee cap and chipped my elbow. Wow, that is a lot of clumsiness.

NICE run today!

– Yes! I am constantly cold! I drink tea all day at work just for the purpose of having a mug to warm my hands on!

-Not really, I guess I consider my blog my journal for everything
What are your Friday night plans?

-Mine are about the same as yours! dinner with the hubby at home, watching the red wings, and catching up on blogs!

-Amazingly enough, NO! I have had a badly sprained ankle, but that is it! *knock on wood*

PS In honor of your kick butt TRAINING RUN I just ate a bag of skittles that my boyfriend gave me for Valentines Day :)

i totally keep a journal, but it guess it's more of a calender because i write everything on there!

OMG you comment on my blog! lol How awesome is that? I'm gonna be the one printing that out to show around how lucky I am d:

Anywaaaays, Brazil is amazing! I love coming here on vacation (I'm living in Argentina now, but I live there alone, all my family is here ): ). You should come, I bet you're gonna love the fact that there's never winter. I mean n.e.v.e.r. So you can imagine how much I hate cold. 70F is already waaay too cold lol.

Well, I have an application on my itouch that keeps track of my training (but only strength training). I started posting my miles on dailymile.com, but I'm lame. I might run in a month what you run in a day heh.

Friday night plans? Omg you're right, it's Friday! I swear I haven't noticed 'till now… so obviously, no plans for me. Chillin' with sista :)

And I've never had any broken bones.

ps. You're gorgeous-er! <3

I love the idea of a running journal!! I'm going to do that too… sounds like you've found a heck of a running buddy to teach you new tricks and keep you motivated for Boston! Loves it!!

Happy belated birthday to your "daddy-o"!!

YOU'RE A ROCKSTAR GIRL!! I'm so proud of you that you ran outside. You're going to do so awesome in Boston!!

Yes, I get cold easily. That's why I live in S.California. I don't like being cold!! :(

I do record how many miles I run but, I don't specify how I feel…etc. But, I think it's a great idea for the ones that do.

Friday night plans- my hubby took our daughter to father/daughter dance tonite at our church. My boys and I are going to cuddle, watch a movie and eat popcorn and candy.

Broken bones- RT thumb, and LFT thumb…I know…retartded injuries!! Going down a hill on my baby bro's scooter and flipped over a rock and my rt thumb caught my fall…a week after I got the cast taken off I broke my left thumb running down a hill too fast. I was in the 8th grade. :)

Have a great evening w/your Billy!! xo :)

Wow… your running stories are SUCH an inspiration! I had no idea you could run as a JOB. And I can't believe you are eating skittles while on the treadmill… haha.

I want to be just like YOU when I grow up… even though I'm older :) Ssshhhh….

I had SO much fun with you today I can't even tell you. I just love you to pieces girl. I know I tell you that all the time, but I mean it! Thanks for putting up with my craziness! You are amazing, and i'm SO proud of you for busting out a marathon today. You're freaking awesome! xoxoxo

You are going to do it in April, for sure! That sub-3 in Boston has JANAE written all over it :) What an incredible opportunity and what an incredible job you did with it! WTG!

Love that pic of your HAPPY dad! So much love in his face! hope his day was great and wishing him a wonderful year ahead :)

I tend to be cold unless I'm moving. I get warm really fast. Oh, and let's not forget my recently- acquired "tropical moments" ;-) No fun at all.

No journal… I used to keep a very detailed workout log… but right now I am following a very simple and minimal program and just put the notes in the log on the computer.

Tonight we are going to watch Harry Potter 5 with the older 2 kids after the younger 2 are asleep. Shhhhh… they don't know it yet :) Popcorn will probably be involved…. and brownies might.

I broke my nose diving into water that was much shallower than I thought. I am so lucky that I didn't break my neck… really. I was a freshman or sophomore in high school when that happened.

Happy Birthday to your Dad! :)

Love this>>>"I know when race time comes I WILL be able to push myself to that pace." Is it weird that I want to go to Boston with you so I can watch you cross the finish line under 3hrs? Cuz you are going to rock Boston.

I'm rarely cold… in fact, I'm usually hot. lol.

No running journal, I probably should though. It would be nice to look back at the good runs when I'm having a rough time/week/etc.

Plans for tonight-finally started blogging about the cruise! woot! and hanging out with dizzle. :)

broke my ankle walking off a friend's porch, didn't see the step down. HURT so bad. HURT my ego even more. :/ still can't bend that ankle very well. luckily it doesn't give me any grief when I run.

I loved reading about your run! So cool. I love that you can use the snow for your ice bath. It was HOT in Dallas today. Go up to 80 degrees…

I'm cold almost all the time. I love being warm, though – hot showers, fires, sunshine.

Reeeeally low key night tonight. I'm reading your blog and watching Jerry Maguire. :)

Glad you have a long weekend! xoxo

You. Are. Amazing. I'm training to run a 10K, which seems totally pathetic, but I have to start somewhere! :)

Reply

Yeah for your cool run! You are going to do amazing at Boston!!!

Janae, you're awesome. I do not run as far or as fast as you. I don't even aspire to run marathons. But I gain so much motivation from you because you are so positive and so fast and so fit. It's fun to hear you go on and on. You should definitely keep a running log on your blog.

I have always journaled. It comes natural that I track all my runs and how they went. I have used Nike+ since the beginning and I always list how the run went. There isn't a lot of space allowed so I don't get too wordy. I don't love the interface for Nike+ so I've been thinking of moving it to a journal or even my Google calendar. I really like journaling on paper, though. My blog has become like a journal, but I still love my Moleskine notebook, or a cute spiral notebook. I feel more reflective with pen and paper, more inspired. I like the idea of flipping through the pages, reviewing my progress. The digital age scares me for this reason. My life will always include paper.

I agree with whomever recommended Dailymile for keeping track. It's a great, easy site to use.

Wow amazing work on the run- you are super fast :)
I get cold easily and so do the rest of my family so I think its in my genes!

Goodness you are just amazing! I would love running at the beautiful canyon! and obviously the picture of you running with a huge bag of skittles is hilarious!
My hands are always freezing and I always like to have a sweater with me just in case!
I was a loser and went to an anthropology lecture about Egypt last night as well as cleaned and did laundry!
No exercise journal and no broken bones for this girl. The exercise journal might be a good idea for me?

You are a rock star!!!! You will so kill Boston. I am always freezing myself so I feel for you. I run in a hat if it's under 50 degrees :)

Reply

Amazing! That sounds like an awesome workout! You know, you kind of do have a running journal on here. I need to start one too.

Reply

Whoa. That's one heck of a run.

running down the canyon sounds heavenly! one thing that i regret is not being into running when i lived in utah. that's why i'm so excited to do the utah valley race. i record my workouts in several different places – mostly on the Daily Mile, but I also use Buckeye Outdoors which is how I upload my workouts for my coach to see, and Running-log.com where my coworkers and I have a competition going to see who logs the most miles.

Agreed… Under Armour rocks!! It's my go-to brand for compression warmth.
I've never broken a bone, knock on wood.
I've kept a journal since the day I started training for a race. OMG, I look back at it and feel really accomplished. No matter how down I get on myself now for not getting under 10 min miles, there once was a day when I could hardly run a 12 min. mile!! It's cool to see how one progresses…

Reply

How on earth do you not keep a running journal!?!?!?! Love the new gear! Glad it kept you warm!

Yes, I get cold easily. But, I also get hot easily. I'm a mess. Lol.

I keep several journals, including a running journal. Mine goes back the past 1.5 years so it's pretty cool to see the progress I've made. It makes me feel really good. Good luck with your journal! You'll love it!
