Do I have a recipe for you…..

First of all, it looks like we had more treadmill lovers out there than I thought.

Anyone interested in a blogger get-together in Utah and we can use my gym to form a circle of treadmills so we can all see each other and talk as we are on the treadmill being the awesome-sauce runners that we are!!

Billy already said he would refill our water bottles when we needed and bring us gu’s and shot blocks every two miles.

After our run we can foam roll and take a big communal ice bath.  One step too far, I know.

Mango Salsa Tortilla Soup

Combine and simmer for 10 minutes:

1 container of mango salsa from Costco

1 pint mild fresh salsa

1/4 cup olive oil

Add and simmer for 1/2 hour:

3 cans of chicken or 4 cooked and shredded chicken breasts

1 large can chicken broth

1 quart water

1 chicken bouillon cube

1 1/4 teaspoon cumin

Add frozen corn (or 2 cans corn) at end and heath through. Serve with tortilla strips, avocados and lime.

The bff’s and I try to get together for a girls dinner once a month.  We used to go out and eat but then we decided to get married and have kids and stuff so now we are poor and we cook for each other.

Sarah made us this awesome soup tonight. Seriously, the best chicken tortilla soup I have ever had it. Make it now, or tonight I guess since I post at 5 a.m.

We realized we are grown-ups all of the sudden because we were talking about insurance, talking about reading books for fun and sharing budgeting tips.  What is happening to me.  Did you know it is almost my birthday…..

IMG_3624.JPG

Look what I got in the mail today?!?!  My cute blogger bff Pixie sent me Harry and David goodies….made my day. Notice the missing pear slot…..I ate it as soon as I opened the box.  Have you ever tried Harry and David……these pears melt in your mouth.

What is your favorite type of music to listen to while you drive?

-I love listening to Death Cab, Coldplay, Jack Johnson, Snow Patrol and Sarah McLachlan as I drive.  I love the chill type of music for driving but crazy fast upbeat music for running.

What sort of things make you feel like you are older than you thought?

-Talking about responsible things, going to bed at nine, secretly watching ‘I Love Lucy’ in my free time and hitting up the early-bird special at Cracker Barrel.

What is your favorite Fuel for long runs?

-LOVE SHOT BLOCKS with a passion….it is like candy with ridiculous amounts of electrolytes. I use gummy bears or starbursts when I have spend my monthly budget on running shoes and ice cream…..quick energy for a lot cheaper.  Gatorade is delicious too. But I HATE gu’s….they make me throw up a little.

love shot blocks! I tried them because I too can't stand GU…ugh, totally grosses me out. I have been meaning to try the sport jelly beans too!

1) that car play list is nearly the same as mine… sub out death cab (cant handle it) for old john mayer- before he was scummy.

2) i LOVE i love lucy… absolute best episode ever is Vitameatavegamin… have you seen it!? 'are you unpoopular? do you pop out a parties?' always makes me laugh. she is a genius, and your watching it doesn't make you old, it makes you wise, cause you are years ahead of your age and know where the goods are. :)

That soup sounds amazing. I love sweet with spicy!
On long runs I usually eat oatmeal! I cook it, add a lot of salt, and bring it in a baggie (it cools and thickens so it's not THAT hard to eat). During the extremely hot summer months it is all I can stomach and the sodium is helpful as I am sweating a little much at that point!

Reply

Oooh that looks delish. I can't wait to start making some recipes from the new athlete's palate cookbook I got. I will definitely share. I love driving to Jack Johnson.

Reply

I listen to anything I can sing along with!

Not being able to remember the last time I "went out" and all my gray hairs!

Soo glad you asked this last question! I tried a Gel for the first time the other day, not pretty! Whole story here: http://wanaberunnergrl.blogspot.com/2011/01/speed-workout-birthday-and-gels.html

I'm going to have to try the shot blocks.

Reply

I like gu gels for what they do to me, but the consistency is a killer. The Chomps are awesome though!!

I feel like an old lady when I would rather stay home and read a book than go to a big house party. Call me crazy, but sometimes it just seems more fun. Either that, or I'm a giant lame.

I pretty much listen to anything on the radio when I'm driving. My cd player in my car crapped out, so I don't really have much of a choice, though sometimes I just talk to myself.

Reply

Every time I see a gray hair pop up I feel much older than I am.

LOVE shot blocks! and I hate gus, too! I've never tried gummy bears – that's genius. I use jelly beans when I don't have shot blocks anymore.

Reply

I love H&D pears! Also, I used to watch I Love Lucy when I was 13 so I don't think that one makes you an adult :-)

That soup looks delish!!!

–My favorite driving music is hard rock. I subscribe to Sirius satelitte radio, and it stays on Octane 20. They ROCK!

–It makes me feel old when I prefer to sit at home on a Saturday night rather than going out like I used to, whether I could afford it or not.

–I've never tried the Clif Shot Bloks, but I like the GU Chomps. I think I still prefer the gels though. I've almost choked a couple of times trying to chew the chomps.

1. I love listening to talk radio while I drive, which leads into …..

2. Talk radio makes me feel old.

3. I used to swear by shot blokes when I was hiking long distance, but I tried them running once and it was terrible!

That soup looks rad! Someday when we get out of the hospital I'll have to make it!

Reply

I used Gu in my last race and about died. 3 bathroom breaks followed… no bueno. I'm gonna give the shot bloks a try!

Reply

Wow, you really are popular. 12 comments before 7 in the morning. Sheesh. Our driving music is pretty much the same, so I thought I would recommend my new favorite, the Local Natives. I've been listening to the same CD for about a month now. Check them out! And if you feel like giving your ears a treat, listen to tracks 1-4 and 9 on repeat about 20 times.

Reply

I typically listen to financial podcast from NPR and yes that does make me feel old. Another thing that makes me feel old is constantly saying "where are those kids parents" every time I watch MTV.

Love the pic of you with the pears! Oh and I would do a Utah blogger meet up.

Reply

Sweet & spicy is the best!

When I drive I like to listen to Top 40 pop type songs so I can sing and dance like an idiot and not fall asleep. The boy likes to listen to NPR, which surprisingly doesn't make me feel older…just more responsible.

I guess the fact that I have no desire to "date around" like some girls my age makes me feel older than I am. I love my BF and love being in a comfortable relationship!

I don't have a favorite fuel for long runs yet. When I ran my half-marathons I used Gu but, like you said, it made me want to throw up!

Reply

yum! that soup sounds good. i love mango salsa. :)

i listen to the radio in my car. but, when i listen to my own stuff, it's music like norah jones that make me feel soothed. :)

Reply

Soup looks awesome! Sadly I don't think mango salsa exists over here, so I guess when I fly over for the treadmill-bloggerfest you'll have to serve me some! :P

When running I always The looks I get..!!

I hate Gu and all gels, but sweeties and chocolate are the way to go! :D

Reply

I'm with you – shotblocks (and the like) all the way.

Brent and I rented a car when we were in New Orleans a few weeks ago. We realized that it was the first time either of us had rented a car for more than a day and for a "vacation." We decided it made us grownups.

Reply

Typically Christian esp since I almost always have kids with me, I occasionally like to listen to the top 10.

Hmmm introducing my teen to the Twilight zone.. OLD!

Def like the shot blocks!

Reply

We all had to tell you our birthday but you never told us when your bday was!! SO its coming up…interesting!

I usually listen to whatever is on the radio – I totally switch stations all the time.

All the people at work (or just my close friends at work) make fun of me and tell me I am 80 years old because I go to bed early and get up early.

I love Gu and shot bloks and anything yummy on a run – but running and eating is tough for me! I miss my mouth sometimes and then it gets all over my shirt!

Reply

I have recently found your blog and it is GREAT!!! I definately love your ramndomness.

I usually listen to the movies being played for my girls in the backseat.=(

I also like the blocks but do you think they give you a dry mouth? And do you like the ones with caffeine or without?

Also I am interested on what you do to prevent injuries? I saw you roll but what else for the amount you run?

Reply

SO. I was just on the phone with a Directv representative from Utah. He was super nice, sang "LET IT SNOW" to me and told me a story about John Wayne. You kids out there in Utah are very kind. Thats all.

Reply

I hate to say this, but I usually don't listen to the radio in the car. I think it's because I'm surrounded by ringing phones, overhead pages, and lots of people talking at work. I adore the silence in my truck!

As for feeling old, well, I am (44!). I discovered that when you fall, or injure yourself in anyway, you just don't bounce back up quite as quickly. This came as quite a shock to me. On the other hand, there's so much you just don't care about anymore, it's refreshing and very freeing!

Reply

That treadmill blogger get together would be awesome!

I like shot blocks for biking, but I use gels for running because they are easier to swallow and I can't chew and run at the same time. I can gag them down in one mouthful.

Reply

I listen to talk radio. I'm a dork. I like Oprah on xmradio.

I love Shot Blocks but don't you find them hard to chew while running? Maybe it's just me.

I'm all over that soup. Seriously. Yum. Especially when it's -100 outside.

Reply

That soup looks delicious! I am gonna have to try the blocks. I am going to be training for my 1st marathon (EEK!!!), and that's good to know they are better than gu's. The sound of gu's make me cringe, blah!

Reply

I LOVE shot bloks! The black cherry are my favorite. I also like eating dates or raisins on long runs.

Happy almost birthday! H&D Pears are theeeee best.

Reply

Wow, I can go on and on and on about what makes me feel old

– what kids are wearing, or more precise little they are wearing, I walk around and say "geez, cover up"

I like Powerbar power chews

Reply

Oh man. Now I want Cracker Barrel. :)

Reply

That recipe looks so easy, even I could make it. AND…it looks SO yummy! I'm making it this week!

Reply

YES let's have a bloggie treadmill get-together! Maybe then I will look at schools in Utah:)

Sarah McLachlan = my fave, slash I always feel old when I see high schoolers and realize I used to be one and how rediculous it was how old I always thought the upperclassmen were.

Slash for long runs I luuuurve dates! I should try shot blox though they look yummy:)

Reply

The soup sounds delicious, will have to try that soon.

I listen to NPR when a news show is on. I only have a radio in my car, no cd player or way to play iPod, so when the news is off I take whatever is least offensive to my ears.

I finally found some shotblocks here and prefer them over anything else. I don't like the gus at all. For long training runs, some orange slices and peanut butter cookies are also nice to have.

Reply

Oooh, that soup does sound delicious! We have girls night out, too…so fun! And I LOVE Harry & David pears! They are the only kind my hubby will eat :)

Reply

LOVE, love, love Harry and David pears – beyond delicious!!! Yum!

Reply

I swear by Clif Shots. The mocha is like candy ;)

Reply

Soup sounds incredible – love the mango in there! I probably have never disagreed with anything here before, but I actually LOVE Gu! Discovered it right before my marathon and it fueled me through the streets of NYC :) Haven't tried shot blocks though…

Reply

I'm in for the treadmill party.

I listen to anything I can sing ridiculously loud to.

Powerbar chews are my current fave but they really don't work for racing because they take so long to eat. Big sigh. I also am at a breaking point with gus. During high school swim practices my coach would throw mini snickers bars at us after hard sets. Best workout food EVER.

Reply

I actually like Gu, but just the chocolate flavor. I feel like Im going to choke on anything that I have to chew. But, I do like the way that Sport Beans taste.

Reply

Oooh that soup sounds AMAZING. Definitely going to try it out – thanks!

I'm right there with you – shot blocks are my fuel. I can not stomach GUs whatsoever. :P

Reply

In the car I love listening to anything I can sing along with…like Mariah Carey, Natasha Bedingfield, etc. The only things that make me feel old are when I realize people are about to start categorizing me as "old". Or when I realize how old I was when my students were born.

I've tried Gu shot blocks during a long run but didn't feel like they gave me the kick that the regular Gu gave me. Really, I like Roctane better than regular Gu. Seems to work the best for me but really is kind of gross. I have some Cliff shot blocks to try, but they seem bulky and cumbersome to have to carry a bunch of on a long run. How do you carry them when you are not on the treadmill?

Reply

I love mango salsa- definitely the best kind out there!
I listen to my iPod on shuffle when I drive. Since what I listen to reflects my current mood it's perfect.

P.s. I've been in your state for the last few days and while driving I saw a Cafe Rio. However we did not stop :( maybe next time! I can see though why you run on a treadmill- it's freezing balls here. Very beautiful though!

Reply

I love Harry and David. I'm up for the treadmill circle. hehe haha

Reply

I use the Nutrilite Endurance Cubes (I work at Amway headquarters so I get that stuff for free!) Gu makes me to vomit (and has made me vomit!)

I am old when I watch Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy while eating dinner.

I am a hip hop girl at heart and love when the radio puts on a late 90's rap song!

Reply

I am making that soup asap! It looks sooo good! Talking to someone and being able to say "oh yeah that was like 10-15 years ago" makes me feel older than I am! The fact that I was 17 10 years ago and thought I was grown-up then is scary…

Reply

I have chicken tortilla soup cooking in my crockpot RIGHT NOW for dinner tonight! Only wish I had seen this sooner, that looks SO good!

I don't particularly like gu but that is what I use, it is the easiest for me as I tend to choke while trying to chew and run, so gu it is!

Reply

Shot Bloks are amazing, sometimes I eat them even when I'm not running. Also, I am stealing your pears! Look, over there, a giraffe!!! Hahahahaha!

I might have possibly already participated in a communal ice bath. Shh.

Reply

I AM SO DOWN FOR A UTAH BLOGGER MEET UP!

My favorite fuel is Gu, for sure. I want to try gummy bears on some of my longer runs in Feb/March.

That recipe looks awesome and the Costco mango salsa is #1 must have at all times on my list!

When I drive, I listen to a lot of Dessa & Eminem. That is the only place I can rap and not sound like a total idiot to anyone, just myself!

Reply

I've been practicing with gels because I know they'll be at the marathon but I must say they are digusting. I don't like goo of any kind in my mouth. Yuck. I love the Clif shot bloks. Black cherry – amazing!

You bring me my daily dose of laughter with your blog. It never fails. I was envisioning all of us at your gym in a circle of treadmills with Billy running around like a mad man trying to keep us hydrated. So funny!

Communal bath? Eh, why not?

Reply

I looooooooooooooove shot bloks too!!! And gu is barfalicious. Love your blog almost as much as cherry shot bloks (totally a close second).

Reply

Did your friend just make up that recipe?! I feel like cooking isslightly chemistry and I needa formula to follow or I will mix acids and bases together! You girls are GORGEOUS! Knock outs!

*Driving–DMB, but if I'm dragging some hip-hop!
*Fuel-clif shot blocks
*I work on a college campus so can I feel young and old in a span of 15 min!

Reply

Is this recipe kid friendly do you think?? I might make it for dinner tonight! Yippie!! I like Jack JOhnson anytime! My favorite…in the car, the house, on a run, with a fox, in a box, I do like him Amanda I am!

Reply

I'm totally in for that treadmill party.
That soup looks so good! I love that you get together with your girlfriends and cook for each other.
When I'm driving I usually don't have the radio on. I like the quiet. You know I have 4 kids that never shut up, right?
Things that make me feel old? I found gray hairs and now dye my hair, the kids say that the 80's were the olden days, and some bag boy called me ma'am. I almost cried.

Reply

How big of a jar is the Costco mango salsa? I have mango salsa that I made, so I'd be able to use that, but would need to know how much.

In the car I mainly listen to country, just whatever is on the radio.

I'm still working on what I like for fuel. I got some Powerade gels, 10 for $10 at the grocery store a while back, so I've used a couple of those so far.

Felt old(er) today when I sent off 2 more grad school apps.

Reply

This looks delish! I guess I should stop being lazy and cook something other than a sandwich. : )

Reply

I love mango salsa! It's my favorite.

We're poor too – we can never go out to eat. It's okay though, we survive!

Thanks Janae! Don't forget to check out that I finally did your TAG! And thanks for the TAG…it brought me some new and wonderful blog buddies. I couldn't help but write you a love note at the top of my tag blog…;) And yes, love notes for my hubby today sounds so fun!!! :)

Reply

Bahahaha communal ice bath… How bout we switch the treadmill-circle-of-love meet up to CA and then we can all jump in the Pacific after! That's the same as an ice bath, right? :)

Reply

I love shot blocks they are amazing for hiking and ultimate frisbee too incase you were wondering, I'm sure I'll love them for running when I get my distance up. I buy mine at REI because then it all counts towards my yearly dividend, thanks parents for letting me use your account!

So I think we are the same age and recently I started feeling old, which everyone makes fun of me for since I'm the youngest in my group of friends and at work.

I feel old especially when I see bands that I listened too when I was 16 and they are still playing and starting to look a bit aged. Good Charlotte played at our holiday party which was awesome but I'm like wow I remember listening to you when I was 16. Or when we play youth teams during winter league frisbee.

Reply

Oh my word! That soup looks AMAZING!!!!!! Too bad we don't have a Costco….and I would have to make my own salsas!

Reply

Harry & David pears are THE BEST! I love Shot Blocks, too. I think they taste amazing. Haha. The strawberry ones. Can't stand the consistency of a gu. Sometimes I'll drive for long periods of time without even turning on the radio and I don't realize it. Driving in complete silence… Billy, on the other hand, loves to play DJ in the car.

Reply

That soup looks delicious!

Yay for your birthday coming up!

Reply

This sounds delish and right up my alley since I don't cook :)

Reply

I have XM radio in my car. I just discovered a channel that plays country music that came out during my "country music phase" in high school. I can practically smell the teen hormones every time I tune in to that station. It's hilarious.

Reply

LOL at circle of treadmills! I've actually never tried gu or shot blocks. I think once I get up to running 5mi consistently I'll probably start to try them. Now I at least know to stick to shot blocks :)

Reply

1) i love that you love pears!! easily my favorite fruit. my dad and i fight over them when i'm at home. i like them chilled and when they're SUPER soft and ripe.

2) that costco salsa is my favorite in the world and my LAME costco here in socal hasn't had it for MONTHS. literally, i almost cry every time i go in there and look and they don't have it…

I love shot blocks. I only ate half a pack on a run once so when I was hungry the next day I finished them for fun :)

I have not tried any energy gels- I am too scared! But I got some for christmas from my parents- all different ones to try so I can find which ones I like, so I will get around to it soon! :)

Cracker Barrel shout out= Love. I would also travel just TO Utah to take part in your little get together, communal bath and all. What are friends for? Though, we may have to watch numerous MKA videos. No breaks except for food.

Your energy is very motivating! I am addicted to working out and thought my extra 15 to 20 mintues extra before or after a spin class or other class was good, but your workouts make mine look like a walk in the park. How do you have so much energy ? Thanks for motivating me to step it up a notch or two!

I realize I'm old when I'm peppy at 5:30 AM and want to curl up and die around 7:30 PM. Also, I roll my eyes when people write or talk with really incorrect grammar/spelling. It kills me.

i never have been on a long run embarrassingly… the longest i went was a wee over an hour… i dont have a very long attention span…

You CRACK ME UP! Seriously, I almost always laugh out loud at some point during each of your blog posts. I listen to a lot of different things when I drive. Hanson, being a big one. I also listen to a lot of country. Wow, I sound like a complete geek. So just ignore that. I also feel older than I am sometimes because I've been married for a few years now, I like going to bed at 9 p.m., I don't "party" and I am responsible. My favorite fuel is power bar gel blasts. They taste like Gushers!

That is so not a step too far. I had a communal ice bath with my training group this summer. And took pictures. And posted them online. Of course :) http://swimbikerundc.blogspot.com/2010/09/20-mile-fun-run.html

My friends and I are the same way – talking about "grown up" things now…makes us feel so old!!

I don't really like Gus, but they are all I can handle on long runs. I hate how….gooey (for lack of a better word) :) they are. Gross. Oh well, I have gotten used to them.
